and this note -- after two years as director of the jail system, charles mccray stepped down in blizzard '16. the day after. a critical moment to return to normalcy for new york. this is a live look at times square. and the other big developing story right now, high tide on the jersey shore. in a half hour, a live report on whether more flood waters will spill into the coast. good morning to you. i am dara brown in new york city. here's the latest. at 7:00 a.m. eastern just moments ago, travel bans in and around new york city have been lifted. millions of people across the

northeast are waking up to record snow totals dumped by the massive storm. in central park, 28.6 inches snow fell. an inch short of tying the previous record. the storm headed farther east and out to sea. snow totals in connecticut hit 16 inches. boston which was clobbered by snow in 2015 had just 6 inch ls of snow as of midnight. 28 inches of snow paralyzed the nation's capital and it could take days to get back to normal. virginia's governor warned residents to stay off the roads today and monday. the storm left at least 20 dead, more than 60,000 customers from the carolinas to new york remain without power this morning. but it was the flooding and not the snow that created major problems for seaside new jersey towns. rehema ellis is in point place, new jersey. was as much flooding there as expected? >> reporter: well, what people will tell you is that they were

told the forecast called for a big storm. so they tried to be prepared, but sometimes mother nature will give you something that you never could have expected. they knew the waves of water were coming, but no one expected this. much of jersey's south shore woke up to flooded streets. some waves reaching up to ten feet and winds getting up to 48 miles per hour. many without power. >> it's like getting sandblasted out here. particularly up around the ocean. >> water rushed through neighborhoods like sea isle city and wildwood. areas hard hit three years ago by superstorm sandy. governor chris christie said residents were prepared. most complying with voluntary evacuations. >> we are so much better off than we were three years ago that we'll be able to survive something like this and not have near the property damage or loss

of life that we had three years ago. >> reporter: in point pleasant, robin schneider and her daughter are riding out o'storm. >> haven't seen any water yet thank goodness. >> reporter: the wildcats hockey team got in their workout. trading in their hockey sticks for shovels. >> i'm used to colorado blizzards. it's different here with the ocean right here, the wind. it's brutal. >> reporter: but what a difference a day makes. take a look. i'm going to have my cameraman pan out here. take a look at this ocean this morning. the waves are coming at us, but it is nothing like it was yesterday when we had these gusts of 48, 50. some of them were 60 mile-an-hour winds. the temperature here is chilly, but when you don't have the gusting wind and snow, it feels

a whole lot better. >> rehema, thank you for that. looks like quite a relief down there. let's bring in bill karins. >> we're watching this coastal flood threat map. almost all of our snow is completely gone. the only thing that's left is all the water piled up along the coastal areas. coastal flood warnings that come down here along the coastline of delaware and maryland. back up through new jersey. we even have app coastal here in the area on the bay side is where we're going to have high water through the morning high tide cycle. starting now and it will go for about the next hour, next two hours. then the water will recede. this will not be as bad. we still have moderate to minor coastal flooding going on. it won't be much worse than what we've seen out there. as far as the snow went, we

shattered so many records out there with what we dealt with. i want to take you to the map here. these are the snowfall totals. boston, 29.2 inches. new york city was 26.8. so close. only .1 inch away from tying the all-time record books. e philadelphia had 22.4 inches of snow. washington, d.c., 19.4 at reagan. so for washington, d.c., that ends up being your third greatest snowfall ever at reagan airport. we didn't eclipse the two greatest ever. and in boston, a surprise. we were thinking boston would be low for. you actually ended up up with six inches of snow last night. that was kind of impressive. we are finally now all clear. boston, you're clear. and nantucket was the last place to watch that. as far as the wind speeds go, we don't have blowing and drifting going on anymore. still have someusts out there. no problem with gusts whatsoever

in new york and atlantic city. it feels better out there. there's the latest gust there. and obviously the pictures from yesterday, this was south of you on the coast in new jersey. this is what did all the damage. this is what likely will make this is billion-dollar storm. the power outages aren't as high as they've been. . i think a lot of us thought it was going to be a lot worse. >> bill, thank you so much for that. new york city's travel ban barring non-emergency vehicles has been lifted as millions wake up to the largest snowstorm in the city's history. i want to bring in adam reese who's live at times square. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we're about to see this community come back to life as the travel ban ends. first we'll see cars back on the road, then trains and buses. but the airports not so much. hundreds of delays and cancellations after the fast and

furious storm here. had that's a tenth of an inch away from the record. kennedy airport saw 35 inches. as that travel ban was in effect, stores and restaurants were closed. people just enjoying themselves walking through telestreets. i saw one whom who came from d.c. tell me your name. >> amy. >> reporter: what did you make of the travel ban? the opportunity to be here in new york city, once in a lifetime to -- >> i thought it was the coolest thing a ever. people were making snowmen and having snowball fights in times square. i lived here for eight years before this and never had that opportunity. >> reporter: now, you wanted to see a broadway show. did you do instead. and what was it like walking through telestreets? >> just a little bit snowy but

it was cool with everyone making the most of it. barbecue joint down the street and just relaxed. >> reporter: so you were lucky to find a restaurant that was open? >> yeah. and packed. it was great. >> reporter: enjoy the rest of the day. >> we will. thanks so much. >> reporter: dara, unfortunately there were five weather-related depths. three of them related to snow shoveling. as you get out there today to shovel your walk or driveway, be very careful. because this snow is wet and heavy. >> thanks. and i know they just lifted the travel ban. how are the cars and traffic in times square right now? is it starting to pick up a little bit? >> reporter: very, very slowly. there are a lot of part-time out here shoveling and we're seeing a couple of cars. the nay yor was adamant that anyone driving on the streets would be arrested. it will be slow as we come back to live here in new york city.

>> thanks so much. washington is also beginning to dig out of the more than two feet of snow that is there. how long will it take for the district to get back to normal? >> reporter: well, that's a good question. i've lived here my entire life and we're not exactly the best city on the east coast when it comes to snow removal. we've had notorious problems with that. however he said every truck is on the streets now. the entire city has been effectively been shut down since 3:00 p.m. on friday. told to stay off the streets, do not drive. the metro system which is our subway as well as buses accounted to stay close. i've looked at some of the main roads in d.c. they're starting to get plowed. there's starting to be movement there. a lot of the side -- some apartment buildings are located.

those are not been touched yet. so this is going to be a long process o to get out from underneath this storm. they're going to start the process today. there was a little bit of freezing overnight. that complicated things as things turned to ice. this was a historic snowfall in northwest d.c. they hit over 24 inches. that is almost as large as they've ever had since the 1920s. and people have taken it, i think, with -- in stride, if you will. you've seen video of -- now, when we go forward, you still have a lot of airport cancellations. they're going to have to deal with that, with those stranded travelers. school more than lickly or not is is -- we'll see how they do with the big cleanup.

most importantly was outages. they didn't have very many yesterday. they had a few, less than ten here in d.c. proper and a few hundred in the surrounding subur suburbs. that's the silver line of this i had had form. >> you look warmer than yesterday. >> reporter: it's true. thank you. now the ripple effect from thousands of flight cancellations. when will the stranded travelers get home? coming up, how the travel world is trying to get back on schedule. ♪ new this morning, that new york city travel ban brought on by the massive winter storm has been lifted. up and down the east coast, it's a day to begin cleaning up. >> anybody stuck, anybody trying to get out. some people have patience. some people don't have patience. but when you go through a neighborhood, you see people come coming out clapping. >> today the department of transportation is getting back

on track in new york city. while in d.c. it might take a little while longer. bill karins is here. and was this the record-breaking storm we expect snd. >> i'd say even and then some. especially when we add areas into that. when new york city crept in, that's when it becomes a historic storm. will likely go down as our third greatest snowstorm in the northeast region after the blizzard of january '96 which was similar to this one. and the superstorm of '93. so washington, d.c. at reagan airport, we ended up at 19.4 inches of snow. did not get into the 20-inch category. still the biggest snowfall we've had in 94 years in the nation's capital. that's still impressive. there's that .1 inch behind the

storm. it falls in second place all time. of course everyone's outside right now and it's still cold windchill wise when trying to shuffle. here's the good news. over the next seven days here is the predicted snowfall. hardly anyone. and it's going to warm up. conditions are going to get very much almost like what we had before the storm hoop here's the five-day forecast in new york. it's not a fast melt so we don't have to worry about flooding. we go from the thirds. be there will be some melting and then freezing at night. slick sidewalks and stuff when the kids go back to school. we will do a slow melt which will be perfect. in ten days maybe completely gone except for a little.

they missed this storm completely but they like it. when there's snow on the ground in the big cities, they head north to ski. >> thanks so much. nearly 10,000 flights have been canceled since the storm started friday. the ripple effect is expected to last for days. kristen dahlgren is at la guardia airport. we know the airport looked virtually empty yesterday. what's it like out there now? >> reporter: it's about the same. not much has changed. we do have a few people walking by here getting to work this morning. but take a look behind me and you can see nobody there at the check-in counters. that's because so far -- these are the same people that were here all day yesterday. they spent the night here. i spoke with my fwrend anna in the back there and asked if she got some sleep. she said a little bit but she's not scheduled to fly out until tomorrow. it is a long wait for these

people. and they're keeping a pretty good attitude though. they do have one restaurant open here this morning. they've been able to get food. obviously it's warm inside here. the airport is officially open, but it's up the airlines about flying again. they don't plan any flights out of the new york area today at all. as for the other airlines, united still hoping that maybe some limited service this afternoon. so you really do need to call and check with your carrier. today looking like it's going to be another really difficult today. so far today we have 3,340 cancellations so far. so a lot of cancellations. it's going to take a few days to get things back online and a few more days to get things back to normal. >> thanks so much. >> you get. it's unfortunate out here.

♪ now we turn to politics. a big weekend in iowa. hillary clinton and marco rubio have another full day of campaigning there after picking up the coveted endorsement of "the des moines register." hours ago hillary clinton got the backing of the concord in new hampshire. it will be their last chance to speak on a national stage before the iowa caucuses next monday. donald trump rounded up new criticism for this comment. >> i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldn't lose any voters, okay? it's, like, incredible. >> joining me now is kerry sanders in muscatine, iowa, where donald trump will hold a rally later today. are you hearing anything about his campaign or the backlash from that comment? >> reporter: no. in fact, they're saying that's

just how he speaks. sometimes he's direct. sometimes he says things that are not politically correct. he says that's why voters seem to like him. people have told me repeatedly that they like the fact he will say things nobody else would say. this particular comment, it did cause some people to do a double take. i spoke to some of the voters who were at a trump rally and this is what they had to say. >> that's shocking to me and not something i support anybody saying. >> wow. that's a strong thing to say. >> well, i think you'd have to know more about why he shot someone seriously. that's not a lot of information to go on. i mean, if it's in self-defense, why wouldn't you still vote for him? >> reporter: and of course i don't think donald trump was speaking literally. he was speaking in the sense that he would have this sort of support. one of the things he is trying to do for his group of
