up. edward lawrence has the very latest. what do you have for us this morning? >> reporter: well, good morning. the first contest is on monday. and not only are the candidates desperate to show why they should win, but they want the momentum of a win. in iowa the temperatures may be cold but the race to be each party's nominee is heating up. the candidates highlighted their difference from one another as they made a pitch to the people of iowa. >> i led the effort against wall street deregulation. see where hillary clinton was on this issue. >> we tackled income inquality and produced results that's what i'll do as president. >> ted cruz is doing one thing and saying something different. >> reporter: meanwhile, the race is getting nasty on the republicans especially between donald trump and ted cruz. >> i won't respond in kind, because i think the people of iowa, the people of new hampshire and south carolina and

this country deserve better. >> reporter: still ted cruz released his attack ad. >> my views are different if i lived in iowa. >> they are different like on abortion. >> reporter: trump is calling cruz the man from canada. >> put that pipe line goes from canada, the birth place of ted cruz. he was born there, now he goes all the way to texas. maybe he has a conflict of interest. >> reporter: the gop front-runners says he'll take action as president and not back down to anyone. and political experts say that donald trump has enormous crowds at the events but in order to win he needs to turn that energy into people actually showing up to caucus for him. gigi? >> see if it works out. thanks. at least 42 people are now confirmed dead from the weekend's historic blizzard including a pennsylvania teen who was eight months pregnant who guyed while shoveling snow. frustrations mounting over the clean-up or lack thereof in some areas. new york city residents are

saying many roads are completely impassable. in queens people feel forgettable and public schools were open yesterday but it was nearly impossible for many students to get to class. look at this school bus, it was filled with students and it had a scary moment, skidding on the way to school. federal workers in the nation's capital are ordered to stay home today where the clean-up is pretty slow. and in in neighborhood, plowing has been nonexistent. residents are cut off from the outside world. they have to shovel paths just to get to their neighbors. over on the jersey shore, a different sort of clean-up after a town saw the worst flooding in history. in wildwood, floodwaters rose six to eight inches higher than in superstorm sandy. some boats 100 yards from their docks. parts of the sea wall constructed after sandy compromised and now in need of

repair. in pennsylvania, governor wolf apologized to more than 550 motorists who were stuck on the u.s. highway for two days. and the travel nightmares are far from over. 1,300 flights are cancelled for today, that's after 2,100 were cancelled yesterday. united airlines is bringing in workers from chicago and houston to help out at the airports. at jfk international in new york city, managers say it's the biggest recovery since superstorm sandy. in addition to money lost in the economy, $850 million, the clean-up costs are staggering. virginia governor terry mcauliffe estimates $3 million an hour to clean it up. higher temperatures during the day dropped below freezing at night. the nanhunt for three escaped inmates in california continues this morning. the orange county sheriff's department says they absolutely need the public's help in this

search for the men, described as extremely dangerous felons. the three used tools to cut through a steel grate in their cell, made their way through the plumbing system to the roof where they believe they used linens fashioned to -- into a rope to rappel five stories down. authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information. one county supervisor say it should be raised to $150,000. all three have been charged by the district attorney for escaping. if convicted, the men face between three and nine years in state prison. a texas grand jury has cleared planned parenthood of breaking any laws following accusations made in an undercover video that it sold tissue from aborted fetuses. instead, the grand jury chose to indict two of the anti-abortion activists said to have been behind the videos. center for medical progress founder david daleiden is accused of violating state law. the videos fired up

anti-abortion lawmakers, republicans on the campaign trail and in congress condemning planned parenthood and leading the charge to strip the funding. planned parenthood released a statement saying, these people broke the law to spread malicious laws about planned parenthood in order to advance their extreme anti-abortion political agenda. as the dust settles and the truth comes out it's become totally clear that the only people who engaged in wrongdoing are the criminals behind this fraud and we're glad they're being held accountable. an officer involved shooting was caught in orlando, florida. it occurred earlier this month. the police department released two videos of the drama that started with a minor traffic violation. officer jonathan mills says he opened fire when the car started driving in his direction. the 17-year-old driver fled the scene and reports indicate the car was stolen. the officer opened fire and he crashed into a home half a mile away. the suspect was first

transported to a hospital and then to juvenile detention. the florida department of law enforcement is investigating. this is sweet, a bottled water company owned by sean "diddy" combs and mark wahlberg will donate a million water bottles to those in flint, michigan. they're trying to determine if state laws were violated during that ongoing water crisis in the city. so at a press conference yesterday, attorney general bill schuette announced the new heads of the investigation, flood and andy arena. schuette noted they both represent the state government and said measures would be taken to prevent conflicts. he also echoed the outrage of many in the community who have believe it north received water bills averaging around $140 a

going across pennsylvania is a different concern. in the pinkish colors, this is freezing rain, and also if you're headed out akrouss interstate 80, be careful of freezing rain that will continue to move its way through northern new england through the day. further to the south, plain old rain down here. we have been watching the potential for a new storm. it will be a southern storm that's the key. this is a southern storm. it will be bringing a lot of tropical moisture up to the gulf coast states into today and tomorrow and that will push down through florida. especially wednesday afternoon. maybe even some strong thunderstorms. will this storm move up the coast and be the next nor'easter? it doesn't like this. this is more of a southern system. it does not look like this is a snow producer at all. so for today, doing a snow melt. new york city 42 and d.c. at 45. just watch out for a little bit

of black ice and a little bit of the freezing rain. >> we do deserve the respite. two huge changes for juveniles serving time behind bars. president obama has ordered a ban on solitary confinement for all juvenile inmates in federal prisons. in an op-ed, he highlighted the damaging effects. it's been linked to depression and other devastating psychological issues. it will affect around 10,000 prisoners in solitary confinement. the second change the u.s. supreme court declared juvenile life imprisonment with no possibility of parole unconstitutional. it applies retroactively to past life sentences. remember this protester who tried to block the reporters from covering this?

that ted cruz is releasing about donald trump where donald trump it's from the past, but he clearly states he's pro choice. how hard does that make it for republicans to back him? >> slam. it's a tough one. particularly in a state like iowa, right, where the evangelicals are such an important part of the base. i mean, it's donald's words right there saying he's pro-life and for partial birth abortion and, you know, that may not be so bad across america, but in pockets of strong, christian faith, i don't know. i think it could be tough on him. cruz did come out with it one week before iowa. i don't think the timing was an accident. >> trump's lead keeps growing. what are the republican strategist who are against him doing behind the scenes? how are they trying to stop him? >> do you think they have a strategy? >> i think they're working hard. >> i think they're grasping for one. no one has figured out how to

leading the news in "the new york times," lawsuits claimed disney colluded to replace u.s. workers with immigrants. former tech employees said they're outsourcing foreign workers from overseas to save money and the lawsuits are seeking class action status. the labor department is investigating. and from the yahoo! parenting pope francis answers kids' question. he skid, what did god do before the world was made? kids ask the hardest questions and the pope responded saying if god was doing nothing before the world i would be wrong. before creating everything, god loved. the book is available march 1.
