it's tuesday, february 2nd and coming up on "first look" after spending hours in a dead heat with bernie sanders, hillary clinton is named the apparent winner in the iowa caucuses. while ted cruz deals a humbling defeat to donald trump. "first look" starts right now. and good morning, everyone. thanks for being with us. i'm shannon mulaire. iowa voters have spoken and ted cruz is the winner of the republican iowa caucus. while nbc news has named hillary clinton the apparent winner for the democrats. she has pulled it off in a race

so close, that at three caucus sites she won by a coin toss, literally. look at this video after results were at a stalemate, they decided to flip a coin, heads or tails, to decide who to support. on the republican side, donald trump finished second behind cruz, followed closely by marco rubio. those three garnered nearly all voters support and then a massive drop-off for the rest of the field. ted cruz won eight, trump and rubio, seven each. carson three. and carly fiorina and mike huckabee and jeb bush won one. tracie potts has more. good morning. >> reporter: shannon, what we knew a few hours after the caucuses were over here, ted cruz had sailed to victory on the republican side. but it was hours later, early this morning before hillary clinton was declared the apparent winner. >> so as i stand here tonight,

breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa. >> reporter: early this morning after counting all night hillary clinton was declared the apparent winner in what the iowa democratic party called an historically close race. >> reporter:. >> iowa, thank you. >> less than a percentage point. >> what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. >> reporter: ted cruz quoting the bible, claiming the biggest victory ever in iowa caucus history. >> tonight iowa has proclaimed to the world morning is coming. morning is coming. >> reporter: donald trump landed in second place. >> we'll go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever the hell they throw up. >> reporter: rubio a close number three was the first to

declare victory here. >> this is the moment they said would never happen. >> reporter: all the candidates pledging to battle it out in new hampshire and beyond. turnout was strong especially here in des moines. at one point, one of the caucus sites ran out of registration forms. there were so many first timers signing up on the spot. shannon? >> thank you. the announcement on clinton's apparent win happened moments ago. it was a dead heat between hillary clinton and bernie sanders throughout most of the night, but that doesn't give hillary clinton an unofficial victory speech even without the final numbers in last night. >> as i stand here tonight, breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa. i want you to know i will keep doing what i have done my entire life. i will keep standing up for you. i will keep fighting for you.

i will always work to achieve the america that i believe in. where the promise of that dream that we hold out to our children and our grandchildren never fades. >> and call the sanders campaign the little engine that could. he stunned at the iowa caucuses by having hillary clinton feel the bern until the very last minute. >> but no president can do what has to be done alone. and that is why -- and that is why what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. a political revolution that says when millions of people come together including those who have given up on the political

process, they're so dismayed and so frustrated with what goes on in washington, with young people who had never been involved in the political process. when young people and working people and seniors begin to stand up and say loudly and clearly enough is enough. >> all right, so cruz pulled off the victory. cruz drew strong support from those who call themselves very conservative and got 33% support from evangelical voters. also, 37% of voters who say they're looking for a candidate who shares their values supported cruz. in his victory speech, he thanked courageous conservatives for their support. >> tonight is a victory for the grass roots. tonight is a victory for

courageous conservatives across iowa and all across this great nation. when the washington lobbyists settled -- on other candidates in this race, when the media said a conservative cannot win, nationwide over 800,000 contributions poured in to tedcruz.org. >> well, precaucus polls showed donald trump in the lead so what happened? trump campaign insiders say both ted cruz and marco rubio had better ground games and it showed. while adding that second place means trump is a loser in iowa. after tracking easily the shortest speech of the season and appeared humbled. >> so on june 16th, when we started this journey, there was 17 candidates. i was told by everybody do not

go to iowa. you could never finish veep in the top ten. and i said, but i have friends in iowa, i know a lot of people in iowa, i think they'll really like me, let's give it a shot. they said don't do i. i said i have to do it. and we finished second. and i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. i'm really honored. and i want to congratulate ted and i want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates. >> although even without taking the top spot, trump remains as confident as ever. >> we will go on to get the republican nomination and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever the hell they throw up there. >> all right. of course not everybody is as positive. check out today's cover of "the new york daily news." obviously, speaks for itself. even though he came in third, marco rubio's campaign is

on a positive trajectory headed into new hampshire. 29% of voters who made up their minds in the last few days ultimately supported rubio. also 43% of those who say winning in the general election is the most important quality in a candidate, supported the florida senator. he exuded confidence last night. >> so this is the moment they said would never happen. if i'm your nominee and i will be your nominee, thanks to what you have done here in this great state, when i'm the nominee, we are going to unify this party and we are going to unify the conservative movement. when i'm your nominee, we are going to win iowa and we are going to win the selection for this country. >> meanwhile, there were some casualties last night after poor showings, martin o'malley and mike huckabee both suspended their campaigns.

welcome back to "first look." more on the caucus, the results coming up. ant to brief you -- i want to brief you on the blizzard on going in the middle of the country. a lot of travel problems and the storm itself is now located here in central kansas. today it will travel up to wisconsin. these are the blizzard warnings that are in effect in areas of red and the snow is breaking out. has yet to arrive in many areas of iowa. it will shortly, but the heavy snow is now in the nebraska/kansas border. and this heavy rain in missouri will be snow. by the time it makes it up to des moines later. so the snowfall total for that -- by the time we're done later on tonight into tomorrow morning, a wide area of heavy

snow. rochester could get a fool. omaha, six to ten inches and minneapolis around four to eight. plowable snow in des moines today. a lot of schools will be cancelled as we go throughout tomorrow and some areas maybe tomorrow. the other thing we have to watch out for is the severe outbreak, this area of orange is an enhanced risk. a chance of some isolated tornadoes today, so we have to watch nashville, up to paducah, lexington, louisville, and back down to birmingham and mobile. wind damage will be widespread but the chance of tornadoes is possible. the timing for the storms this evening, they form at about 5:00 p.m. and then as the sun sets we have the severe weather going through. this is 10:00 p.m. this evening. that's evening thunderstorms, dark, a chance of tornadoes so that's something to pay attention to and make sure you have your family safe tonight. >> absolutely. listen to your radios and televisions. the teacher who allegedly

all right. after months of battling, ted cruz is the winner in the iowa caucus ahead of donald trump and marco rubio while nbc news is naming hillary clinton the apparent winner for the democrats. she narrowly edged out bernie sanders although the pair was in a virtual tie all night long until a short time ago. kasie hunt got the vermont senator's reaction. >> is capable of running and able to winning. we look forward to doing well here in new hampshire and after that we're off to nevada and then south carolina. where i think we're going to surprise a whole lot of people just as we did in iowa. >> do you anticipate contesting this vote count at all?

>> we just got off the plane, we don't know enough about it. joining me now is best selling author ellis henican. have you slept at all? >> a little bit. >> they were in a dead heat and then nbc news declared that apparently hillary clinton had won this thing. >> yes. yes. >> so the question is is it a big surprise that she won or a bigger surprise it was that close all night long? >> the latter. i mean, listen, bernie was so far back not so long ago. he pulled up within a hair's breath of the woman who supposedly had it all locked up. yeah, i think the senator looked very tired in the tape, didn't he? but you know what, he's got something to smile about this morning. >> does it in fact matter that she's technically declared the winner here. >> listen, it's better to win. you'd rather explain it from the winning side, but no, he's got a lot of momentum. what happens in iowa doesn't stay in iowa.

>> that's right. >> you know what, it affects new hampshire and nevada and south carolina and on and on. yeah, bernie's got a pretty good story to tell this morning. >> and will it affect going into new hampshire? does that give him momentum that he came so close to take it from hillary in iowa? >> yeah. yeah. for exactly that reason. expectation's low, performance pretty darn good and, you know, listen, would it have been better if he'd been on the other side of that line? shush. but -- sure. but it's a lot better than he expected. >> there was a time overnight where he was saying that the dnc didn't properly staff some of the locations. do you think that's going to come back into the spotlight here? >> yeah. you're talking technical stuff and the coin toss got me. i understand it's a tie, you've got to do something. but you know what? it still feels like a tie. >> why not rock, paper, scissors. >> that might be more fun.

maybe more complicated for the folks. >> let's not forget the gop side of things, because that was no less interesting. ted cruz a sizable some could argue lead last night and winning iowa. are you surprised by that? >> first blood against donald, right? >> he's not a winner. >> well, no, now he isn't a winner. i thought the statement was very humble and the tone was different from what we came to expect from donald. he's got to be the most disappointed this morning. >> what happens for him? does he change his tone at all? are we going to see a different type of donald, he runs on being a winner. >> do you think that's possible? >> look at what we saw last night. >> i don't know. he's pressing on. i think the donald we have gotten to know is probably the one we're going to get. believe me he's still way ahead in the polls in new hampshire. by the way, pollsters are the

losers. there's something broken about the polling in this country. >> and don't forget marco rubio. some people counted him out. this is a huge momentum for him, is it really? >> well, yeah. i think he's got a legitimate case. all the others are down beneath him. he's bigger than all of them. he's the one of that -- that almost dozen others who have a claim to say i have some momentum. he almost nosed out donald for the number two spot, so i think the guy has a -- should we summarize the evening? >> please. >> trump's no super man, right, marco's no also ran, bernie's no loser, and hillary's no lock. >>that's a fair summation of the evening i would say. >> the pollsters don't know anything. >> well, you never know. you don't know who's going to come out and who they're going to vote for in the end. >> you have to say there were some surprises in it. all the conventional wisdom,
