iowa and all across this great nation. tonight the state of iowa has spoken. >> well, i have to start by saying i absolutely love the people of iowa. we finished second and i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. i'm really honored. and in fact, i think i might come here and buy a farm. >> they told me that we have no chance because my hair wasn't gray enough and my boots were too high. [ laughter ] they told me i needed to wait my turn. but i needed to wait in line. >> this is your turn! >> good morning, it's tuesday, february 2nd, i'm chris jansing, live from des moines, iowa, after a thrilling night from the iowa caucuses.

also the two close races, two candidates have bowed out of the race. ted cruz the clear winner of the republican caucus and donald trump second, marco rubio in third. already this morning, bernie sanders rallying in new hampshire on the back of a tr k truck. look at him go. this guy is 74 years old. he's got a son who's older than marco rubio and ted cruz, but there he is out after landing in the middle of the night. taking advantage of what he feels is that virtual tie here. it actually had been a night of uncertainty because it wasn't until 3:40 this morning that nbc news could call hillary clinton the winner of iowa. it's the closest in history. and hillary clinton leads bernie sanders by five state delegate equivalents. in iowa, the democrats don't show actual results, but

expected state delegate, so that's the number you're seeing beneath the candidates' names. now, as for the national delegates awarded, the total count at this hour, clinton 29. sanders, 21. and nbc news has allocated 22 delegates to clinton, 20 to sanders. one has not been allocated, but because clinton has the backing of seven of the eight superdelegates she gets to the total of 29. early this morning, the clinton campaign released a statement saying there is quote, no outstanding information that could change the results. meanwhile, last night, as the votes were still being counted, clinton took the stage in des moines, flanked by her husband and daughter. >> what a night! an unbelievable night. what a great campaign. this has been an incredible honor to campaign across iowa

with so many of you to make the case for the kind of future we want, for the democratic party and for the united states of america. so as i stand here tonight, breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa. i want you to know i will keep doing what i have done my entire life. i will keep standing up for you. i will keep fighting for you. i will always work to achieve the america that i believe in. where the promise of that dream that we hold out to our children and our grandchildren never fades. but inspires generations to come. join me, let's go win the nomination. thank you! god bless you. >> so after that big sigh of relief, ten minutes later bernie

sanders took to his podium in des moines where he called the race a quote, virtual tie. >> bernie, bernie, bernie, bernie! bernie, bernie! >> iowa, thank you. we came to this beautiful state. we had no political organizat n organization. we had no money. we had no name recognition, and we were taking on the most powerful political organization in the united states of america. and tonight, while the results are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie. >> shortly after their speech, both sanders and clinton boarded

charters en route to new hampshire where they are both now. it was without a dispute. while the race was too close to call last night, the sanders campaign had been told by the iowa democratic party that they did not have the results from several precincts throughout iowa and that the party had asked the campaigns to help get the missing information. the party that responded saying they were awaiting results from the small number of outstanding precincts and had reached out to the campaigns for help contacting the chairs from those sites. then, they put out another statement. saying they were awaiting the results from just one precinct. we'll have a lot more on this story coming up on "morning joe." well, now to the republican side and when all was said and done, it was ted cruz's night. he's the projected winner with 28% and nearly 52,000 votes. the most ever for a republican candidate. donald trump collected the second most ever, over 45,000,

finishing with 24% and another freshman senator, marco rubio of florida came in at 23%. look further down the field, ben carson 9%, senator rand paul with 5%. two points ahead of jeb bush whose campaigns and super pacs spent more than $14 million in iowa. that is a lot of money per vote, folks. carly fiorina, and john kasich, mike huckabee and chris christie got 1%. cruz finished with eight delegates. rubio and trump with seven apiece. and ted cruz put his campaign into overdrive in the final hours before the caucuses. completing a tour of iowa's 99 counties. what is known in this state as the full grassley. along with the voter outreach operation that paid off. cruz won among voters who said they were contacted on behalf of a candidate. and those who had caucused before.

it also found cruz captured influential voting blocks including 44% of self-described very conservative voters. 34% of evangelicals. 38% of those who say they wanted a candidate who shares their values. here's cruz thanking his supporters last night with some subtle digs at donald trump. >> tonight is a victory for the grass roots. to put in perspective, your incredible victory that you have won tonight. that is the most votes ever cast for any republican primary winner. tonight is a victory for millions of americans. who have shouldered the burden of seven years of washington deals run amok. tonight is a victory for every american who understands that after we survive eight long years of the obama presidency that no one personality can

right the wrongs done by washington. during the course of this campaign, people have asked heidi and me are you tired? i will admit it is 16, 18 hours a day, six, seven days a week. we are not tired at all. >> donald trump meantime began his day with a last minute appeal to get iowans out to caucus and his rally was interesting as always. >> i get a little notice in case you see it, the security guys -- we have wonderful security guys. they said, mr. trump there may be someone with tomatoes in the audience. if you see someone getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the

crap out of them. just knock -- i promise you, i will pay for the legal fees. i promise. >> in the end, trump's ground game fell short. one member of his iowa team tells nbc news that his events never had enough staffers to keep one the crowds and in some locati locations, there was no one to speak on the candidate's behalf last night. the campaign was quote, disappointed with election night challenges, adding they did not prepare. but trump was humble in his concession remark, building bridges with mike huckabee who suspended his campaign after the results and expressed success ahead. >> when we started this journey there was 17 candidates. i was told by everybody, do not go to iowa. you could never finish even in the top ten. but i said, i have friends in iowa, i think they'll really like me give it a shot. i said i have to do it. and we finished second.

and i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. i'm really honored and i want to congratulate ted and i want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates including mike huckabee who's become a really good friend of mine. so congratulations to everybody. we will go on to get the republican nomination and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever the hell they throw up there. iowa, we love you, we thank you. you're special. we will be back many, many times. in fact, i think i might come here and buy a farm. i love it. okay? >> senator marco rubio came in third among republicans at the caucus last night, but boy, you wouldn't know it from his speech. >> so this is the moment they said would never happen. for months, for months they told us we had no chance.

for months they told us because we offered too much optimism in a time of anger with had no chance. for months they told us because we didn't have the right endorsements or the right political connections we had no chance. they told me that we have no chance because my hair wasn't gray enough and my boots were too high. they told me i needed to wait my turn. tonight, i thank you here in iowa because we have taken the first step but important step towards winning this election. if i'm your nominee, and i will be your nominee, thanks to what you have done in this great state, when i'm our nominee we are going to unify this party and we are going to unify the conservative movement. >> now, rubio's campaign manager framed the night as a tie for second saying rubio got more

votes than mitt romney or rick santorum in 2012. the rubio campaign is riding high on what they're hailing as a big win, defying expectations. they certainly defy the two recent polls that came out over the weekend. and they're expected to roll out an official endorsement from senator tim scott of south carolina later today. i spoke with another rubio backer, senator cory gardner of colorado, last night. it sounded like the speech of a winner, but he did come in third. >> but again, you heard him say nobody thought he'd get where -- in the position that he did. so you saw somebody who built momentum going in. and i think everyone recognized how well ted cruz would do, and tonight is a surprise. >> ben carson who was once considered the strong front-runner here in iowa his campaign came in fourth place and they're crying foul, accusing ted cruz's team of spreading abject lies, trying to sabotage him and labeled him

quote, the worst kind of washington insider. carson accuses cruz's campaign of saying that the former neurosurgeon was done. according to a carson campaign official, ben carson's wife candy was in a precinct and dispelled the rumor that he was dropping out. congressman steve king, a cruz backer, tweeted in the evening, quote, carson looks like he's out. iowans need to know before they vote. most will go to cruz i hope. so here's carson speaking last night. >> we have seen the tweets that have come out that said that i was suspending my campaign efforts and that people should be thinking about maybe their second choice. and this was before the caucuses were over and that is really quite a dirty trick. >> now, a spokesman for the cruz campaign denied the allegations to msnbc, but said his people did alert some supports that carson planned to go to florida after the iowa caucuses instead

of campaigning. now, carson confirms he's headed to florida but he said it's not a sign out of getting out of the race, but a quick break before going on to new hampshire and south carolina and i spoke to some who were at the caucus where candy was and they said it was wild. let's turn to business now where alphabet is now the most valuable company on earth. they snatched the crown from apple after their shares were sent soaring yesterday. cnbc's nancy has more from london. how much is it worth? >> when you look at the after-hours trade, something in the neighborhood surpassing apple about $500 billion so this is quite a significant sum for alphabet. but of course this is an after hour trades. we have to make sure it holds once the stock opens today. an important milestone today and

hawkeye state than either of his democratic rivals. he barely registered last night, getting less than 1% of the vote. announcing the decision, he thanked his supporters for waging a courageous battle. >> we fought very, very hard in order to give the people a choice, and the people have made their choice tonight. and it was hard to get over that threshold here. and i know that those numbers don't reflect all of the hard work that you did. but we have driven this debate and so tonight, i have to tell you that i am suspending this presidential bid. but i am not ending this fight. >> mike huckabee also suspended his second bid for the white house last night after a disappointing ninth place finish in iowa. the former arkansas governor who won the iowa caucuses in 2008 announced the decision on twitter after winning less than 2% of the vote. like ted cruz, he completed the

full grassley, visiting all of the 99 counties. he made 150 stops across the state in january alone according to his campaign. speaking to supporters last night in west des moines, huckabee joked he was ending his bid because of illness, adding, quote, voters are sick of me. always a sense of humor. a different kind of sporting event all together, the countdown to super bowl 50 continues. players met the media ahead of the big game and peyton manning told friends that sunday would be the final game of his career. the quarterback had to address the retirement question last night. >> one thing i have done well this season, this team has done well this season is stay in the moment, focus on the task at hand, take it one week at a time. ten other cliches right there. i'm excited about this week and looking forward to this playing in this game. i'm going to focus on that and then deal with all the other

welcome back to "way too early" on a tuesday morning. after the iowa caucuses the republican party is celebrating record turnout last night. the gop counted more than 180,000 caucusgoers. about 60,000 more than the previous record sent in 2012. that defies conventional wisdom that higher turnout would translate into the trump victory.
