from the first in the nation new hampshire primary and hillary clinton is looking to build on her historically close victory in iowa, although she has an uphill battle against bernie sanders who has a commanding lead in the polls in new hampshire, a place that she concedes is his backyard. sanders is looking to keep his momentum from iowa, especially amongst younger voters where they supported sanders and 58% of voters between 30 and 44 supported him. he's taking his good showing to the bank. the campaign says it received more than $3 million in donations yesterday. the most for the campaign on a single day and right after his speech monday night, 40% of donations were from new donors. on the republican side, the endorsements are rolling in for the top three in iowa. donald trump picked up former massachusetts senator scott brown's support. someone trump has publicly said he'll consider as a vp candidate if nominated. jeff duncan endorsed ted cruz.

and while another south carolina congressman, tim scott, endorsed marco rubio, fresh off his strong showing in iowa. and nbc's edward lawrence joins us from washington with more. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, shannon. it seems like the heat has been turned up a notch. both sides republicans and democratic candidates are fighting to make new hampshire count. new hampshire's one of the smallest states in the nation. this week it's the center of national politics. >> i'm pretty excited about where we are. because i believe that people in new hampshire are going to make the right decision. >> reporter: republicans see a crack in donald trump's armor. he finished second in iowa to senator ted cruz. >> we are going to beat hillary clinton and it won't be by a flip of the coin. >> reporter: marco rubio surprised everyone, almost beating trump, finishing a close third. >> we've got the biggest vote ever in the history of a primary in iowa by like 60,000 people

came out extra. i'm not going to say it was me, but believe me it was me. >> reporter: trump say he'll win new hampshire. they credit cruz's incredible ground game for the win in iowa. >> we'll continue to do what we did in iowa on the ground, here working to build the grass roots army. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders said he raised $3 million in donations since his moral victory in iowa. >> if we bring out large firms of people, we are going to win next tuesday. >> this is the first in the nation primary. nobody takes that responsibility more seriously than granite staters. >> reporter: clinton trails sanders in recent new hampshire polls by double digits. but she hopes to turn that around. and hillary clinton had considered bypassing new hampshire and focusing on the other races after new hampshire because of bernie sanders' lead there. she decided to stay this week and fight to try and close the gap. shannon? >> interesting stuff. edward lawrence joining us from

d.c., thank you. on capitol hill, the house failed to reach the two-thirds needed to override president obama's veto of a bill that would repeal key provisions and essentially gut obamacare. the vote was mostly along party lines although three republicans did vote to allow the veto to stand. it was fitting the vote happened on groundhog day. the house has tried more than 60 times to repeal obamacare. although this was the first time a bill was sent to the president's desk. some frightening new developments as the zika virus outbreak continues to spread and if the first case through sexual transmission has been reported in the u.s. medical officials are trying to contain it. in some incidents patients have been left paralyzed. rehema ellis has the latest from brazil. >> reporter: mosquitos are the primary way the zika virus is transmitted. but the cdc confirmed the first case acquired by sexual contact in texas. as a result, the cdc tells nbc news it will now issue a new

advisory this week. >> if a man comes back, get sick with zika, has sexual intercourse with a woman who is pregnant or may be pregnant there's the theoretical risk that woman could become infected. >> reporter: the cdc is also investigating other serious illnesses zika may cause beyond microencephaly in babies. in brazil, 27-year-old gomez is recovering from sudden paralysis he woke up with a month ago after having zika like symptoms. he was diagnosed with gia syndrome. >> last year, we have 55 cases. >> reporter: neurologists say that's four times higher than

normal at her hospital. you think the zika virus is connected with the syndrome? >> yes, absolutely. >> who's at risk? >> everybody. >> reporter: the cdc is looking into the possible link. >> we're doing a study so we can determine if there's a relation and if so, which people are most at risk. you're saying he could be disabled the rest of his life? >> yes. >> reporter: this 59-year-old farmer is showing no signs of recovery. as scientists race to solve this unfolding medical mystery. rehema ellis, nbc news, brazil. now to the latest on the toxic water crisis in flint, michigan. this morning, michigan governor rick snyder will give detail on a $30 million funding plan to help pay the water bills of flint residents who have been dealing with lead contaminated water for two years now. on top of that, the flint mayor is calling on the governor to also fix the corroded pipes as the fbi joins the investigation

mobile. about to get the storms in your door, montgomery, towards atlanta. i-75, they're deal withing the rains. we have cleared out london, kentucky. columbus and ohio, this line of storms will try to push through charleston and pittsburgh over the next hour or two. it's could enough for winter weather up in maine. syracuse, rochester, just plain old rain. as far as the timing, as we go throughout 5:00 p.m., the line of storms makes it from the mid-atlantic down through central virginia, near the richmond area, and through charlotte and south carolina. that's probably when the worst airport delays will be. it pushes off the new england coast. some scattered showers as we go through your thursday morning but some of the rain can linger along the southeast coastline tomorrow. not a beautiful morning in the carolinas tomorrow. rain and storms up and down the

here's your first look at wednesday's dish of "scrambled politics." did the cruz campaign sabotage ben carson at the caucus? it sure appears that way. a carson campaign is accusing cruz's team of telling voters that carson was dropping out of the race something that carson calls a dirty trick and half a dozen iowans tell msnbc they were misled, saying speakers supporting cruz announced that carson was suspending his campaign. in a statement made after the caucus, cruz apologized to carson, something that carson appreciated but it's the late. jim gilmore made the first undercard debate last week. what impact did it have at the polls? not much. 12 people voted for gilmore. although one of the supporters tells the huffington post that he exceeded expectations.

sunday. i'll tell you what i think happened here. bernie's trash talking of money and politics so much that now the coins have turned against him. >> and that is your morning dish of "scrambled politics." joining me now from washington, political reporter erin mcpike. did you ever think we'd see the coin toss this early in the game? >> no. that was surprising to everyone. in fact, on monday night everybody thought it was a joke. but it really happened. yes. >> it actually happened. there's proof of it. all right, let's talk about iowa of course in the rear view, all eyes on new hampshire. i think a big question people have, can trump put iowa behind him? >> i think he can. and right now he is so far ahead in the polls in new hampshire that it's looking like he'll have a victory there. of course, the polls can swing wildly in this last week. but people are really -- the other campaigns are raining down on marco rubio right now. some on trump trump but really you hear chris christie calling marco the boy in the bubble.

that's that debate on saturday night and it seems right now that marco rubio has set himself up to be the center of the attacks on that night. so i do think donald trump is still headed for a victory. i think he'll put iowa behind him. >> ted cruz on to south carolina. what is that about? >> ted cruz is spending some time in new hampshire and he could have a surprise strong finish in new hampshire and consolidate some of that conservative support. but what ted cruz is doing is jumping ahead because he does not want to finish behind marco rubio in south carolina which is a very big establishment state, even though it's in the south. the republicans in south carolina do tend to favor some of the establishment candidates and ted cruz would of course love to finish ahead of marco rubio who is hoping for a first place finish in south carolina. >> a bit of a darkhorse there. clinton and sanders both claiming iowa victories in a sense. who has the edge leading into

new hampshire? >> well, bernie sanders of course has the edge in new hampshire. hillary clinton still has the edge in the overall nomination fight and one of the things that people haven't talked about in the last week is that she is well ahead in terms of superdelegates. those are governors, senators, other party leaders within the democratic party whose individual votes count as a delegate in that race for delegate count to win the nomination. so she's well ahead of him and what she's trying to do is put him away early. that can maybe do bet -- they can do better in new hampshire especially after she claims victory in iowa despite the fact it was a fphoto finish there. i do think bernie sanders has quite the edge for that state. >> erin mcpike, thank you. have a good one. >> you too. >> all right, thanks, i'm shannon mulaire. don't forget to like us on facebook.
