traded blows over who best embodies progressive values. the back and forth got started earlier this week when sanders said clinton is only a progressive some days. and last night he continued that line of attack including a line clinton made to support his argument. here are the two candidates last night. >> you know, i get accused of being kind of moderate and center. i plead guilty. i think sometimes it's important when you're in the elected arena, you try to figure out how do you bring people together to get something done? >> i don't know the context of it, but secretary clinton said some people call me a -- i'm paraphrasing, some people call me a moderate. and i proudly, you know, say that i'm a moderate. that's what she said. so all i say, you can't go say you're a moderate on one day and be a progressive on the other day. i do not know any progressive who has a super pac and takes $15 million from wall street.

there's just not progressive. >> i was somewhat amused today that senator sanders set himself up to be the gatekeeper on who's a progressive so i'm not going to let that bother me. i know where i stand. i know who stands with me. i know what i have done. but i don't think it helps for the senator to be making those kinds of comparisons because clearly, we all share a lot of the same hopes and aspirations for our country that we want to see achieved. >> and clinton was also forced to react to sanders' criticism of the large speaking fee she received over the years. here's how she responded to questions about being paid $675,000 by goldman sachs for just three speeches. >> look, i made speeches to lots of groups. i told them what i thought. i answered questions. >> but did you have to be paid $675,000? >> well, i don't know. that's what they offered. so -- you know, every secretary

of state that i know has done that. >> but that's -- not running for an office -- >> to be honest, i wasn't committed to running. i didn't know whether -- >> you didn't think you'd run for president? >> i didn't. when i was secretary of state several times i said, you know, i think i'm done. and you know, so many people came to me, started talking to me, the circumstances, the concerns i had about the republicans taking back the white house because i think they wrecked what we achieved in the '90s. but, you know, anybody -- anybody who knows me who thinks that they can influence me, name one thing they influenced me on. >> that's not something you regret, the three speeches? >> no. i don't. i don't feel i pay any price for it. i'm very clear about what i'll do and they're on notice.

>> the dnc has agreed to sponsor four more debates beginning with the debate tonight on msnbc. it will come on the heels of a contentious few days over the candidates. and it extended beyond the town hall event we showed you. the sanders sent out this mailer, hillary clinton a progressive on some days with a list of various position, she has taken over the years and the clinton campaign sent out a statement of their own, bernie sanders hasn't had president obama's back. the senator hasn't always supported the president. let's go to the republican side of things. they have gotten even more combative with battle lines breaking out everywhere. ted cruz apologized to ben carson for spreading the rumor that he was dropping out on caucus night, but it wasn't enough for trump. he tweeted, ted cruz didn't win iowa. he stole it. and based on the fraud committed

by senator cruz during the iowa caucus, either a new election should take place or cruz results nullified. trump tweeted a photo of the mailer, calling it a misdemeanor at minimum. now, trump kept up his attacks on cruz last night before a massive audience of over 10,000 in little rock, arkansas, where trump was two hours late, but few left. >> actually, i think i came in first because if you take a look -- okay? you know? oh, that voter fraud, you know these politicians are brutal. cruz accused trump of having a trumper tantrum. >> it is no surprise that donald is throwing yet another temper tantrum or if you like, another trumper tantrum. but at the end of the day iowa people spoke. i wake up every day and laugh at the latest thing donald has tweeted. because he's losing it.

we need a commander in chief, not a twitterer in chief. i mean, we're liable to wake up one morning and he would have nuked denmark. >> but others came to trump's side. angered over the tactics in iowa. >> we saw the rumors about ben carson and they weren't accurate and i thought it was unfair to ben. i think it goes back to what i said before, that is a willingness to say or do anything or in this case spread a false rumor about ben carson. >> senator cruz has apologized. said he didn't know what his campaign was doing, but he didn't condone such activity, but there needs to be action. >> cruz defended the actions saying he would not be quote, scapegoating anyone. and since the iowa caucuses four candidates have suspended their campaigns. yesterday, both rand paul and

rick santorum announced they wouldn't make it to the first in the nation primary. with the senate re-election race looming in kentucky, paul issued a video statement bowing out but did not endorse anyone else. now, despite trying to expand the party tent, paul's poll numbers never took off, at one point sliding off to main debate stage. he was outperformed by his own father in iowa back in 2012. that same year, ron paul came in second in the new hampshire primary while this year his son is polling and 2%. ron paul more than doubled his son's fund-raising over a similar period. but the backers in new hampshire are looking for who they should support next. >> so we're shopping today because rand left. and you're attractive. >> well -- >> rick santorum saw a dismal performance in the iowa caucuses just four years after winning them. yesterday the former senator from pennsylvania made it clear

who he thinks would be best for the party. >> he's a born leader and someone i just feel a lot of confidence in, that he is -- he is the new generation and someone that can bring this country together. not just, you know, moderates and conservatives but young and old. >> and yesterday current pennsylvania senator pat toomey came out in support of marco rubio as well. now, chris christie on the other hand sounds like he will not be backing marco rubio any time soon. arguing that new hampshire comes down to him and the senator. >> this town hall meetings run on average 40 to 45 minutes and ours run two hours. that we have answered over 1,100 questions and senator rubio barely answers any. by the way, he acts like the king of england. he has a press aide sitting next to him and preselects which reporters ask questions. this is a guy protected and

coddled his entire political career. the boy needs to come out of the budge and he needs to get toing -- come out of the bubble and come to work here in new hampshire. >> christie has sought to frame the race as to who can best take on hillary clinton and he turned heads about these comments yesterday. >> you know the last person she wants to see on that stage in september, you're looking at him. you know why? she's been running away from federal prosecutors for the last six months. [ applause ] and she sees a federal prosecutor on the stage, i'll beat her rear end on the stage and after i do, she'll be relieved because she'll be worried that i'll serve her with subpoena. it will be a relief to lose the debate. let's turn to other stories. president obama used his first visit to an american mosque yesterday to condemn the anti-muslim rhetoric coming from the campaign trail. though he never mentioned republican presidential candidates like donald trump by name, the targets of his remarks were clear.

>> recently we have heard inexcusable political rhetoric against muslim americans that has no place in our country. if we're serious about freedom of religion, and i'm speaking now to my fellow christians who remain the majority in this country, we have to understand an attack on one faith is an attack on all of our faiths. [ applause ] and when any religious group is targeted we have a responsibility to speak up. and we have to reject a politics that seeks to manipulate prejudice or bias and targets people because of religion. none of us can be silent. we can't be bystanders to bigotry. >> back on the campaign trail the president's first visit to the american mosque seemed to be one too many for some of the republican presidential contenders.

>> i don't know if he's maybe he feels comfortable there. we have a lot of problems in this country, greta. a lot of places he can go and he chose a mosque. i saw that a little while ago and so that's his decision. that's fine. >> always pitting people against each other. always. he's always -- look at today. he gave a speech at a mosque. oh, you know, basically, implying that america is discriminating against muslims as -- of course there's discrimination in america of every kind. but the bigger issue is radical islam. is by the way, radical islam poses a threat to muslims themselves. they'll argue that. but it's the constant pitting people against each other. one of the most prominent black lives matter activists is running for office in maryland. mckesson gained attention for participating in the protest movement, tracing its roots to ferguson, missouri, and spreading to baltimore last year.

a warrant for his arrest remains in place. now, assange first sought asylum yes in 2012 to avoid extradition to sweden for sexual assault charges. okay, after a two-day hearing the criminal sexual assault case against bill cosby is moving forward in a pennsylvania courtroom yesterday. a judge ruled that a 2005 decision not to charge him with a crime doesn't stop prosecutors from putting him on trial now. cosby has been charged with aggravated indecent assault. the allegations from andrea constand. lawyers for cosby argued that the former district attorney bruce castor made a no prosecution deal in the case. now the current district attorney argued it wasn't a binding agreement. castor testified there was no agreement not to prosecute, but he decided that there was insufficient credible evidence to prove beyond a reasonenababl

doubt. a publicist for cosby says that the decision will be appealed. cosby has said that sex with constand was consensual. he has denied allegations of sexual misconduct. robert durst, the real estate heir whose story was retold in "the jinx" pleaded guilty to legally possessing a gun. this paves the way for him to stand trial for the murder of susan berman, a former confidant. under a plea bargain agreement, durst will likely be charged for the gun charge before april and then moved to the federal prison near los angeles. durst has denied killing berman. okay, let's turn to business and one of the big headlines this morning, earnings from the oil giant shell dropped a stunning 44% for the fourth quarter. revenue came in at about $1.8 billion compared to just under 3.3 from a year earlier.

signing day for college football recruits. the top ranked high school player in the nation, reshawn gary, from paramust, new jersey, announced he'll attend the university of michigan next fall. high school athletes announced their decisions in a variety of fashions from the traditional donning of the hat to putting on the gloves. espn said this was the best recruiting class in the nation. exciting stuff there. let's turn to the nba and yet another jaw dropping performance from the warriors steph curry. he put on a show last night in the nation's capital. hitting seven three-pointers against the wizards. look at that. curry would finish the night shooting 19 of 28 from the field including 11 threes in total. he's the only player in the nba history to have multiple games with at least 11 two-pointers.
