it's monday, february 8th. right now on "first look," score one for the underdogs and the possible storybook ending to one of the nfl's greatest players of all time. from the gridiron to the granite state, a mad scramble for votes as the candidates fight for their political lives ahead of tuesday's primary. plus the northeast braces for another snowstorm with schools already closed in boston and rhode island. "first look" starts right now. good morning, i'm gigi stone woods. peyton manning got the storybook ending to a career that many argue makes him the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. his underdog broncos did what few thought possible, as denver's defense managed to shut down that superman cam in the

17-1 panthers. nbc's jay gray has the highlights. >> reporter: the broncos opened the game with a long drive and field goal, then scored again in the first quarter. >> the ball is out. in the end zone! it is recovered -- >> reporter: the panthers got on track to start the second. cutting the lead to just three. both teams gave the ball away before halftime, a long punt return led to another denver field goal giving the broncos a 13-7 lead at the half. ♪ halftime that started with coldplay. and ended red hot with bruno mars and beyonce joining the show. ♪ in the second half the teams traded field goals. then late in the fourth quarter with the panthers down by six, they turned the ball over again. their fourth of the game. the broncos then pushed the ball across the goal line, securing the franchise's third super bowl win, and a second super bowl ring for quarterback peyton

manning. jay gray, nbc news, santa clara. >> following the game a dejected cam newton had this to say before walking out on the media. >> they just played better than us. i don't know what you want me to say. >> they're calling him the incredible sulk but really can you blame the guy? the broncos line backer von miller led the defense that frustrated newton. miller was richly rewarded by being named super bowl 50 mvp. so have we seen the rast of future hall of famer peyton manning? >> kind of let this sink in. it's been an emotional week. emotional night. and the night's just beginning. i look forward to celebrating with my friends and family, and and -- i think i'll take some time after that. like i said i'm going to kind of enjoy the night. take it one step at a time. >> all those bud light references he made had to be some sort of hint. we'll just have to wait on

peyton's announcement. "usa today" notes peyton manning had the worst season of any winning super bowl quarterback. manning had the fourth worst passing rating of any bowl winning quarterback at 56.6. dissing an american icon as broncos fans celebrated deep into the night back in denver police managed to keep the crowd largely under control with just a handful of arrests. the broncos victory parade will take place tuesday at denver's union station. now even before the broncos can fully celebrate their underdog victory the westgate super book in las vegas says new england, seattle and pittsburgh are already favored to win next year's super bowl li. sports fans are still burping up their guacamole from this here. they're talking about next year. if seattle does get there they'll likely be without mar shawn lynch. during the super bowl lynch tweeted this photo and nfl.com confirms the 29-year-old running back has, indeed, hung up those cleats. and intends to retire. now to politics.

one day before the voters of new hampshire hit the polls, and it seems it's still anyone's race. the latest monmouth university poll came out and has donald trump on top. get this, only 49% of gop primary voters say they're completely decided on a candidate. but, following saturday's republican debate it appears marco rubio wearing the biggest bull's-eye. nbc's gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: with his political future on the line, marco rubio doubled down, saying so what as he sticks to a script. >> it's interesting that right now, after last night's debate, oh, you said the same three or four times. i'm going to say it again. i would pay them to keep running that clip because that's what i believe. passionately. >> reporter: but rubio seemed rattled, repeating the same rehearsed line four times. >> let's dispel once and for all with this fiction that barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. this notion that barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. anyone who believes that barack obama isn't doing what he's doing on purpose doesn't understand what we're dealing with here.

>> reporter: during an all-out assault from chris christie. >> there it is the memorized 25 second speech. there it is, everybody. >> reporter: rubio's campaign said he excelled on other subjects such as foreign policy. >> terrorist nations. >> reporter: but his opponents are branding him an inexperienced robot. the #rubioglitch trending on social media. >> i think the whole race changed last night. because you know there was a march among some in the chattering class to anoint senator rubio. i think after last night that's over. >> reporter: hoping to gain ground, governors christie, jeb bush and john kasich touting executive experience. but it's donald trump who is still the front-runner here, by a wide margin. though his latest jabs at bush drew repeated boos. >> quiet. -- [ boos ] >> a lot of times. >> reporter: on "meet the press" he described how he'd fight terrorists. >> i would bring back waterboarding. and i'd bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding. >> what's the worse? >> i'm not going to define it to you on this program. but i would be very much in favor of going beyond

waterboarding. >> i want to know what he's thinking. nbc's gabe gutierrez reporting. the ground game in new hampshire intensified for the democrats as well with bernie sanders holding a pretty commanding lead in new hampshire. hillary clinton made a side trip sunday. we get more on the democrats from nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: secretary clinton taking a detour to a baptist church in largely african-american flint, michigan, impacted by a toxic water crisis. >> this is not merely unacceptable or wrong, though it is both. what happens in flint is immoral. >> reporter: clinton's visit designed to resonate with her base in key states like south carolina. critical if she loses new hampshire. but the clintons aren't giving up on the granite state. volunteers are going door-to-door. her surrogate in chief, former president bill clinton, reminiscing about the state where he famously dubbed himself the comeback kid, helping to catapult him to the presidency.

>> this is 1992 on steroids. you need to respond on steroids, and you'll never regret it. >> reporter: hillary clinton trails bernie sanders in the state, including among women, and clinton on the attack, trying to paint sanders as weak on foreign policy. >> there really isn't any kind of foreign policy network that is supporting and advising senator sanders. >> reporter: sanders firing back on the trail in new hampshire. >> -- war in iraq. i was right on that issue. hillary clinton was wrong. >> reporter: hailing from neighboring vermont, sanders is leading clinton by double digits in the latest polls. but clinton has proven experience here, waging her own comeback in 2008, beating barack obama. >> that was nbc's kristen welker. saturday senate -- senator sanders made a quick detour to new york city to appear on "snl," "saturday night live" alongside host his doppelganger

larry david. but just hours after the show, sanders was already back in new hampshire. nbc's kate snow caught up with him on the trail. >> madeleine albright, former secretary of state, was doing an event for hillary clinton and she said there's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women. she's talking about your voters. >> well, look, i think that's an unfortunate statement. i think women should help women, women should help men, men should help women, men should help men. that's what life is about. but we are now talking about electing the president of the united states and people should make their decision based on who they think can do the job best. >> you've been taking some heat for foreign policy. what do you say to critics who think you don't have knowledge. >> this is what i say, i say "a," it's nonsense. and i say "b," it's the same argument used against barack obama in 2008. who is this senator? this young senator? he doesn't have any experience in foreign policy. didn't work then. won't work now. thirdly, most importantly, the most important foreign policy issue in the history of this country was the war in iraq.

resolution with significant new sanctions against pyongyang. >> with each one of these actions the dprk moves one step closer to its declared goal of developing nuclear-tipped, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and we cannot and will not allow this to happen. >> south korea says it's moving forward on talks with the u.s. for deploying an advanced missile defense system to counter the growing threat of north korea's weapons capabilities. it's been nearly three days since a powerful magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern taiwan, and people there are still trapped beneath the rubble. this morning, two survivors were pulled out alive from a high rise apartment building. it collapsed like an accordion. so far more than 170 people have been rescued. according to the associated press the death toll now stands at 37. let's get down to business with cnbc's landon dowdy. good morning. >> hi, gigi. a denver broncos super bowl win may not necessarily be good for wall street.

the so-called super bowl indicator predicts in years when an afc team prevails stocks end in the red. there's nothing scientific about it but it has been right 81% of the time. last year new england won the super bowl and the s&p 500 ended the year down 0.7%. meanwhile, chipotle is closing its more than 2,000 restaurants for four hours today. the burrito chain will address employees about food safety issues and the foodborne illnesses that have put a major crimp in its bottom line. several competitors hope to capitalize by offering special promotions. and fill up for less. a new industry survey shows the average price of gas has dropped eight cents in the last two weeks to $1.82 a gallon. that is the lowest in seven years. analysts say refineries are cutting wholesale prices to spur sales and stay competitive. gigi, back over to you. >> still feels great when you're filling up the tank. now which one of those $5 million super bowl ads scored best? plus a fright being scene in

welcome back to "first look." the forecast for the new hampshire primary shortly but first i've got to show you this huge ocean storm. thankfully this did not come up the coast. it's going to brush by the coast and mostly be affecting areas from long island out there to southeast new england. this is just a huge storm. the shield of snow is now making its way through nantucket, martha's vineyard, up in cape c cod, a little bit on long island. it's going to pivot through providence and boston throughout the day. we have blizzard warnings out here and winter storm warnings from hartford to boston. hartford to new york city, this is really a brush for those areas. the hard-hit impact areas are going to be long island. this is where we could see a possibility of a foot of snow and blowing and drifting. plymouth, mass, 8 to 12, manchester new hampshire, 2 to 4 and boston about 4 to 8. new york city maybe an inch. here's the forecast for the

primary. as we go through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, there's still some snow showers out there, especially in the northern half of the state. there will be some plowing and shoveling early in the day. by 12:00 noon, just some 12340e showers up in the mountainous areas. in the evening hours that's when things will be clearing out. it's not going to be a huge impact for the new hampshire primaries. there will be some snow to deal with but by new hampshire standards, it's nothing. >> no snow tires. thanks, bill. now imagine a huge sinkhole swallowing your car with you and your family still in it. that actually happened to a couple with their 2-year-old daughter in peru last week. it's believed heavy rain and recent days caused the sinkhole. now cranes were used to pull out the car and incredibly no one was hurt. but i imagine very rattled. >> oh, my gosh! the sight of a double decker bus exploding in london yesterday terrified witnesses,

understandably. they were not aware it was a stunt for an upcoming movie "the foreigner" starring jackie chan. some thought it was a terrorist attack and complained that the public had not been adequately warned. i think they could have put up some signs or -- ♪ >> can you give me a warning? >> sure. warning. here comes your ticket. >> lots of ryan reynolds everywhere. it's not the super bowl without those ads. and more than 60 commercials aired during last night's game featuring over 30 celebrities. according to "usa today," super bowl ad meter, the best ad voted by viewers was hyundai's first date featuring kevin hart. other included the wiener stampede by heinz and ultrasound by doritos. while certainly controversial. some of the worst adds axe deodorant, skittles, and amazon. now just how tough is it to get a new hampshire voter to pick a

part of the state motto. as you drive down the scenic highways here it's plastered on almost every license plate you see. what is the state motto of new hampshire? >> live free or die. >> reporter: it was easy. what's the state motto. >> live free or die. >> live free or die. >> reporter: the live free or die state. the motto was originally part of a toast by ill revolutionary war general john stark to his fellow soldiers. as world war ii came to a close the state adopted it as its official slogan. fast forward to today. new hampshire voters are so independent almost 50% of registered voters aren't even affiliated with either political party. >> what party are you registered with? >> independent. >> excuse me? >> independent. >> i'm an independent. >> i'm not registered with either democrat or republican. >> i'm undeclared. i haven't declared my party, therefore i can choose a republican or a democratic ballot. >> must be nice. >> reporter: get this, of new hampshirites who aren't registered with either political poll a recent poll says a third of them have not made up their

minds about who to vote for in 2016. they can vote for anybody. >> not sure yet. still undecided. a couple more days. >> reporter: two days left. >> i'll decide right in there. >> reporter: who you going to vote for? >> i haven't decided yet. >> i'm leaning. >> reporter: who are you going to vote for? >> i have not yet decided. we are very picky in new hampshire. >> oh, this is greasy. >> we got you hooked! look at that. >> reporter: that's delicious. >> we're joined now by political reporter lauren friend good morning. the race got reshuffled over the weekend, kasich and bush getting touted for having their strongest debate performances, rubio a bit of a setback. where do you see this all heading in new hampshire and south carolina? >> you still see trump as the leading candidate in new hampshire and you have kasich and christie and others saying they really do need to do well heading into new hampshire or their campaign is struggling. jeb bush supporters are saying they need to see a really strong showing in new hampshire or otherwise their concern that the former florida governor really

can't make it past new hampshire into the carolinas, into nevada. so the debate did really kind of change the dynamic. senator rubio had a very tough night. he was criticized for seeming robotic, repeating those lines four times about obama. but when it comes to it, donald trump is still the front-runner and he is really the one to beat along with ted cruz. >> well, he did get boos during the race. is that going to hurt him at some point? >> i'm sure it's a very interesting state, very independent. of course at some point everybody's been waiting for ted -- donald trump's behavior to really hurt him. but he's leading by 20 points in some polls and it does seem like he's the one to beat in new hampshire. then you have ted cruz who obviously came off with a surprising win in iowa. and going forward there, can he tap in to that evangelical vote? >> lauren, the democrats, for the first time in a long time, it really appears to be a race to the left. it used to be appealing to the middle. do you think the party's changed? >> you're really seeing the rise of a progressive party. you've seen this for a very long

time in the republican party. this more populist group really leading the polls and coming forward this is why you have donald trump. and now you're starting to see that on the democratic side. a populist, an elizabeth warren wing of the party kind of putting forward and coming up and having their voices really stand strong in the democratic party. so that's why you're seeing the party change. but when it comes down to it, democrats are known for coming around their candidate. >> a lot of questions heading into new hampshire. lauren french from politico, thanks. >> thank you. just ahead, time is running out for one of the biggest powerball winners in history. next. it's a fact. kind of like social media equals anti-social. hey guys, i want you to meet my fiancée, denise. hey. good to meet you dennis.
