it's monday, february 8th. right now on "first look," score one for the underdogs and the possible storybook ending to one of the nfl's greatest players of all time. from the gridiron to the granite state, a mad scramble for votes as the candidates fight for their political lives ahead of tuesday's primary. plus the northeast braces for another snowstorm with schools already closed in boston and rhode island. "first look" starts right now. good morning, i'm gigi stone woods. peyton manning got the storybook ending to a career that many argue makes him the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. his underdog broncos did what few thought possible, as denver's defense managed to shut down that superman cam in the

17-1 panthers. nbc's jay gray has the highlights. >> reporter: the broncos opened the game with a long drive and field goal, then scored again in the first quarter. >> the ball is out. in the end zone! it is recovered -- >> reporter: the panthers got on track to start the second. cutting the lead to just three. both teams gave the ball away before halftime, a long punt return led to another denver field goal giving the broncos a 13-7 lead at the half. ♪ halftime that started with coldplay. and ended red hot with bruno mars and beyonce joining the show. ♪ in the second half the teams traded field goals. then late in the fourth quarter with the panthers down by six, they turned the ball over again. their fourth of the game. the broncos then pushed the ball across the goal line, securing the franchise's third super bowl win, and a second super bowl ring for quarterback peyton

peyton's announcement. "usa today" notes peyton manning had the worst season of any winning super bowl quarterback. manning had the fourth worst passing rating of any bowl winning quarterback at 56.6. dissing an american icon as broncos fans celebrated deep into the night back in denver police managed to keep the crowd largely under control with just a handful of arrests. the broncos victory parade will take place tuesday at denver's union station. now even before the broncos can fully celebrate their underdog victory the westgate super book in las vegas says new england, seattle and pittsburgh are already favored to win next year's super bowl li. sports fans are still burping up their guacamole from this here. they're talking about next year. if seattle does get there they'll likely be without mar shawn lynch. during the super bowl lynch tweeted this photo and nfl.com confirms the 29-year-old running back has, indeed, hung up those cleats. and intends to retire. now to politics.

one day before the voters of new hampshire hit the polls, and it seems it's still anyone's race. the latest monmouth university poll came out and has donald trump on top. get this, only 49% of gop primary voters say they're completely decided on a candidate. but, following saturday's republican debate it appears marco rubio wearing the biggest bull's-eye. nbc's gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: with his political future on the line, marco rubio doubled down, saying so what as he sticks to a script. >> it's interesting that right now, after last night's debate, oh, you said the same three or four times. i'm going to say it again. i would pay them to keep running that clip because that's what i believe. passionately. >> reporter: but rubio seemed rattled, repeating the same rehearsed line four times. >> let's dispel once and for all with this fiction that barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. this notion that barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. anyone who believes that barack obama isn't doing what he's doing on purpose doesn't understand what we're dealing with here.

waterboarding. >> i want to know what he's thinking. nbc's gabe gutierrez reporting. the ground game in new hampshire intensified for the democrats as well with bernie sanders holding a pretty commanding lead in new hampshire. hillary clinton made a side trip sunday. we get more on the democrats from nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: secretary clinton taking a detour to a baptist church in largely african-american flint, michigan, impacted by a toxic water crisis. >> this is not merely unacceptable or wrong, though it is both. what happens in flint is immoral. >> reporter: clinton's visit designed to resonate with her base in key states like south carolina. critical if she loses new hampshire. but the clintons aren't giving up on the granite state. volunteers are going door-to-door. her surrogate in chief, former president bill clinton, reminiscing about the state where he famously dubbed himself the comeback kid, helping to catapult him to the presidency.

larry david. but just hours after the show, sanders was already back in new hampshire. nbc's kate snow caught up with him on the trail. >> madeleine albright, former secretary of state, was doing an event for hillary clinton and she said there's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women. she's talking about your voters. >> well, look, i think that's an unfortunate statement. i think women should help women, women should help men, men should help women, men should help men. that's what life is about. but we are now talking about electing the president of the united states and people should make their decision based on who they think can do the job best. >> you've been taking some heat for foreign policy. what do you say to critics who think you don't have knowledge. >> this is what i say, i say "a," it's nonsense. and i say "b," it's the same argument used against barack obama in 2008. who is this senator? this young senator? he doesn't have any experience in foreign policy. didn't work then. won't work now. thirdly, most importantly, the most important foreign policy issue in the history of this country was the war in iraq.

welcome back to "first look." the forecast for the new hampshire primary shortly but first i've got to show you this huge ocean storm. thankfully this did not come up the coast. it's going to brush by the coast and mostly be affecting areas from long island out there to southeast new england. this is just a huge storm. the shield of snow is now making its way through nantucket, martha's vineyard, up in cape c cod, a little bit on long island. it's going to pivot through providence and boston throughout the day. we have blizzard warnings out here and winter storm warnings from hartford to boston. hartford to new york city, this is really a brush for those areas. the hard-hit impact areas are going to be long island. this is where we could see a possibility of a foot of snow and blowing and drifting. plymouth, mass, 8 to 12, manchester new hampshire, 2 to 4 and boston about 4 to 8. new york city maybe an inch. here's the forecast for the

primary. as we go through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, there's still some snow showers out there, especially in the northern half of the state. there will be some plowing and shoveling early in the day. by 12:00 noon, just some 12340e showers up in the mountainous areas. in the evening hours that's when things will be clearing out. it's not going to be a huge impact for the new hampshire primaries. there will be some snow to deal with but by new hampshire standards, it's nothing. >> no snow tires. thanks, bill. now imagine a huge sinkhole swallowing your car with you and your family still in it. that actually happened to a couple with their 2-year-old daughter in peru last week. it's believed heavy rain and recent days caused the sinkhole. now cranes were used to pull out the car and incredibly no one was hurt. but i imagine very rattled. >> oh, my gosh! the sight of a double decker bus exploding in london yesterday terrified witnesses,

can't make it past new hampshire into the carolinas, into nevada. so the debate did really kind of change the dynamic. senator rubio had a very tough night. he was criticized for seeming robotic, repeating those lines four times about obama. but when it comes to it, donald trump is still the front-runner and he is really the one to beat along with ted cruz. >> well, he did get boos during the race. is that going to hurt him at some point? >> i'm sure it's a very interesting state, very independent. of course at some point everybody's been waiting for ted -- donald trump's behavior to really hurt him. but he's leading by 20 points in some polls and it does seem like he's the one to beat in new hampshire. then you have ted cruz who obviously came off with a surprising win in iowa. and going forward there, can he tap in to that evangelical vote? >> lauren, the democrats, for the first time in a long time, it really appears to be a race to the left. it used to be appealing to the middle. do you think the party's changed? >> you're really seeing the rise of a progressive party. you've seen this for a very long
