"first look" starts right now. good morning. i'm gigi stone woods. all eyes on new hampshire today as voters head to the polls for

the first time, first in the nation primary. for the 100th time voters in tiny town of dixville notch voted at midnight, all nine of them. john kasich was the only candidate to hold an event in the town. kasich won. it worked, with three votes to donald trump's two. bernie sanders swept the democrats to hillary clinton's zero. overall, sanders has the early upper hand there over clinton, 17 to 9. while kasich, trump and cruz are in three way tie for first with nine votes each. could this be indicative? donald trump is in some more hot water. this time over his repetition of a supporter's use of a derogatory term to describe ted cruz. now viewers may find this offensive. >> she just said a terrible thing. you know what she said? shout it out because i don't want to --

okay. you're not allowed to say and i never expect to hear that from you again. she said -- i never expect to hear that from you again. she said he's a pussy. that's terrible. terrible. >> i am appalled. blushing. since declaring his presidential bid, trump has been touting building a giant border wall with mexico as you know and making mexz coe pay -- mexico pay for it. felipe calderon has a different idea, he has harsh words. >> mexican people, we are not going to pay any single cent for such a stupid wall. and -- >> a stupid wall. trump is the clear front-runner in new hampshire but the fight for second place is now a tossup between cruz, kasich, bush, rubio and christie. the governors are looking for big performances. and chris christie is continuing that assault on marco rubio. >> it's over. i mean, the -- you know his

campaign putting out the momentum stuff is not happening anymore. the fact is it's because he's not ready to be president. >> rubio flying high after iowa is in damage control mode for the criticism over the repeated talking points that got so much attention. a topic our own lester holt asked him about. >> but in repeating it over again, it played to the notion that your critics and your opponents have that you're a bit contrived, rehearsed. >> it's silly. people -- understand people when they're running for office will say whenever they -- whatever they need to say. >> to see a headline that said you choked -- that doesn't bother you? >> it's part of the process. >> tough skin on the other side of the aisle. the race is getting personal with bill clinton attacking the sanders campaign saying they're

being sexist. and hillary said a campaign switch is looming. >> i have no idea what they're talking about or who they're talking to. we're going to take stock, but it's going to be the campaign that i have got. i'm very confident in the people that i have, i'm very committed to them. they're committed to doing the best we can. we'll take stock. we're moving into a different phase of the campaign. we're moving into a more diverse electorate. so of course it would be malpractice to say what worked, what do we have to do new and different that we have to pull out. >> currently, nate silver's website 538 has sanders odds of winning at greater than 99%. but even though the polls show sanders with a large lead, let's not forget that last time hillary clinton ran she pulled off a stunning upset. tracie potts has more from manchester. what kind of reshuffling are we

looking at? >> reporter: well, let's start with the democrat, gigi. as you just noted this is where hillary clinton in 2008 became the comeback kid. she was not forecast to win that primary and she did over president obama. this time, they're lowering expectations. she's double digits behind bernie sanders. if she's able to get out of new hampshire not winning, but losing by single digits they're going to consider that a success. and move on to what she just said, some more diverse areas. like south carolina, which has a large african-american population and she has huge leads down there. on the other side, it's really a fight for who's going to come in second here today. you noted some of the key names here, cruz and rubio at the top of the list. then we have john kasich doing so much better here than he did in iowa. even in one poll already in second place. he's certainly possible. he's a possibility to come in second here. along with jeb bush.

maybe even chris christie. that's why you're seeing christie really go after rubio so hard. so it's a four, maybe a five way tie for second for the republicans. turnout could have a lot to do with that and they're expecting a big one. gigi? >> thanks, tracie. don't miss a minute of tonight's special coverage hosted by rachel maddow. and flint is seeing the first lawsuit. the rodriguez's daughter showed high degrees of lead and they were threatened with child protective services if the lead didn't decrease. it happened three months after the water supply was switched to the flint river. the state of michigan and others are named in the suit accused of lying to residents. local officials have not responded to request for comment. a lawyer for the state declined

to comment because he hasn't seen the court papers. thousands of passengers aboard one of the world's biggest cruise ships are expected to arrive back in new jersey tomorrow morning after a monster storm cut their seven day cruise very short. the anthems of the seas ran into 40 foot waves and 100 mile per winds. more than 6,000 passengers and crew were ordered to take cover. a huge ship. people tweeting widespread damage including overturned furniture. at least four were injured. none seriously. royal caribbean is promising full refunds. president obama is asking for congress for nearly $2 billion to fight the zika virus. it would give the bulk of the funds to the department of health and human services for mosquito control, vaccine research and lab testing for the virus. it's spread to 26 countries and the americas. it's thought to cause severe birth defects.
