"first look" starts right now. good morning, i'm gigi stone woods. oh, what a night. huge blowout wins for the political outsiders in the new hampshire primaries. hillary clinton badly bruised, john kasich given new life. the rest are left fighting for their political lives. donald trump won nearly every voting demographic and group for men and women, to those with and without a college degree. even scoring among conservatives and moderates. 65% of voters who said they want a candidate who tells it like it is sided with trump. and 61% who want an outsider. most of his supporters made up their minds more than a month ago. here's part of trump's victory speech. >> i am going to be the greatest jobs president that god ever created. remember that.

moderates. kasich is optimistic going forward saying his campaign is special. >> there's something that's going on that i'm not sure that anybody can quite understand. there's magic in the air with this campaign because we don't see it as just another campaign. we see this as an opportunity for all of us to change america, to reshine america, to restore the spirit of america and to leave no one behind. >> now to chris christie. he spent most of his time in new hampshire. but with drastically different results, finishing in sixth. he's waking up in new jersey today and will re-evaluate his future. it's an extremely tight race for third with ted cruz, jeb bush and marco rubio within one point of each other. ted cruz is looking to nevada and beyond. many left jeb bush for dead and

last night he echoed mark twain that reports of his campaign's death are greatly exaggerated. >> the pundits had it all figured out last monday night when the iowa caucuses were complete. they said that the race was now a three-person race between two freshmen senators and a reality tv star. while the reality tv star is still doing well, it looks like you all have reset the race and for that i'm really grateful. >> unlike jeb, marco rubio was full of momentum after a strong caucus, but a poor debate performance burst his so-called bubble. he put the blame on himself though. >> i want to thank you. our team here in new hampshire did a phenomenal job. you worked incredibly hard and i'm incredibly grateful to you. >> clinton accompanied by her husband and daughter chelsea took to the stage after conceding the primary to sanders. she addressed the youth vote in which sanders has really dominated throughout the campaign cycle. >> i know i have some work to do. particularly with young people, but i will repeat again what i have said this week. even if they are not supporting me now, i support them. because i know -- [ cheers and applause ] i know i have had a blessed life, but i also know what it's like to stumble and fall. and so many people across america know that feeling. we have learned it's not whether you get knocked down that matters, it's whether you get back up. >> here's one of the most interesting parts. the former secretary of state also lost among women in new hampshire by 11 points according to exit polls.

back in 2008 of course women helped fuel her victory over barack obama backing her by double digits. according to the nbc news exit poll of new hampshire democrats, candidate values was an important role in forming that strong base of support for sanders. 8 in 10 placing a premium on having a candidate who is honest and trustworthy outside of the political establishment and caring about people like me voted for sanders. clinton and sanders are turning to nevada and to south carolina with super tuesday following after a huge win in new hampshire, sanders vocalized to supporters tuesday night that his campaign is really a force to be reckoned with. >> together we have sent the message that will echo from wall street to washington, from maine to california. that is what the political revolution is about. >> sanders will be in new york

city this morning for a breakfast meeting with reverend al sharpton at harlem's famed sylvia's restaurant. clinton's aspirations ride on winning the minority vote in nevada and south carolina, a demographic she has polled highly. clinton got a 23-point lead over sanders among likely caucusgoers. her firewall is well intact, according to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll she leads sanders there by a wide margin. happening overnight, nbc news reports that the clinton campaign will bring on jennifer o'malley dillon, the former deputy campaign manager for president obama's 2012 re-election campaign. a dire warning from top u.s. intelligence officials on capitol hill tuesday where director of national intelligence james clapper told lawmakers he could not recall a time with more diverse and array

of challenges and crises. clapper discussed isis which he called the preeminent global terrorist threat. >> isil's leaders are determined to strike the u.s. homeland. in 2014 the fbi arrested nine isil supporters and in 2015 that number increased over five fold. one technique they have used is taking advantage of the torrent of migrants to insert operatives into that flow. and they're pretty skilled at phony passports. so they can travel ostensibly as legitimate travelers as well. >> clapper discussed north korea's development of nuclear material and a missile system capable of posing a threat to the u.s. though he noted it has not been flight tested. a health scare on the boston college men's basketball fan. tar heels head coach roy williams collapsed during a time-out and he was back on his

campaign wears on the candidates are really starting to go at it. in fact, jeb bush told supporters that he thinks that donald trump quote needs therapy. at first, trump was insulted but when he heard it was an hour of talking about himself he was like, sign me up, i like it. >> joining me now political reporter erin mcpike. thanks for being here, erin. new hampshire historically known for political surprises, last night was no exception. what of the many upsets stood out most to you? >> i think it was the size of the margins that bernie sanders and donald trump won by. we expected actually the polls to tighten and i think the surprise was that they didn't. and that those two candidates won by such large margins. they confirmed the polling going in to tuesday. >> john kasich coming into second is a surprise. we're headed to south carolina, nope for the political rough and tumble.

who needs to take out who here among the republicans? >> jeb bush needs a great showing in south carolina. he needs to finish at least in second place, if not beat donald trump. if he survives to second place, then he has a real rationale for going forward. if he doesn't after pulling out his brother george w. bush on the campaign trail, if he doesn't finish in second place there's not a good rationale for moving forward for him. >> not just jeb in trouble. it's like a quentin tarantino movie. over on the democratic side, hillary clinton is adding a former obama staff tore her staff. what does clinton need to change? >> really in this case, she has a terrific campaign with a terrific operation that got great fund-raising skills. they have a great digital strategy, but the thing is the messenger. hillary clinton needs to get that better herself. the problems she's had is not

changing the campaign. she does need to sharpen that message and provide the reason why she wants to be president and what she can bring to the table. she hasn't done a great job of that just yet. >> the clintons did not expect bernie sanders to win with such a wide margin over them in new hampshire. this came as quite a surprise. >> well, it did and it didn't. for the last three or four months, bernie sanders had had that kind of margin in the polling. it was expected to tighten and that she could have pulled within ten points of him. yet, she didn't. it's hard to say why she wasn't able to do that. but bernie sanders did have a lot of momentum. he obviously had that "saturday night live" appearance so i don't know that that changed anything in new hampshire. but the momentum is with him right now. the clear question is going forward -- can he take that with him into the next states like nevada and south carolina? but really, in the states after that, going into the march states. will he be able to pull out some other victories? that's an open question.

>> and momentum going forward means donors. so who do you think made the most money after last night? >> bernie sanders, no doubt about that. the campaign already put out some data in their fund-raising appeals last night, showing how quickly the money was rolling in for him. >> what about john kasich? is this an outlier that he came in second? i mean, that took a lot of people by surprise as well. >> you know, it did. but he spent so much time in new hampshire he needed to do well and he did. that's not a huge surprise. what we have to watch for with john kasich going forward is how he does in south carolina because right now, the most recent nbc news/"wall street journal" poll which did come out three weeks ago has him at 1% in south carolina. so it's a real question whether he can translate this second place showing in new hampshire into other victories or high place finishes in other states. >> definitely more territory for ted cruz and others.
