turnout, and i say huge, we won. >> so new hampshire, i want to thank you. we love you. we're going to be back a lot. we're not going to forget you. you started it. >> and good morning to you. it is wednesday, february 10th. i'm steve kornacki live from manchester, new hampshire, on this morning after the first in the nation primary. we're going to have much more on bernie sanders in just a moment. but first, donald trump is a winner this morning. the billionaire businessman, real estate developer, reality show icon taking 35% of the vote in new hampshire with the support of 92,000 voters. more than 50,000 votes ahead of his nearest competitor. traffic backed up for miles yesterday in lines of voters stretched into the final hour of voting. latecomers rushed to the polls.

and the turnout on the republican side, it was record breaking with 92% of the vote now in. more than 263,000 people cast ballots in the republican primary. that shatters the record from back in 2012. donald trump finished well ahead of ohio governor john kasich. kasich who broke out of the pack somewhat to finish at 16%. senator ted cruz behind him at 12%. so a little more than 1,200 votes ahead of jeb bush who took 11% of the vote. placing in the top four and keeping his campaign alive. further down, marco rubio in what for him was a disappointing fifth place at 11%. governor chris christie of new jersey missing the top four target to come in sixth place. he took 8%. and carly fiorina way back with 4%, ben carson back at 2%. now of the 23 delegates from new

hampshire for the national convention, nbc news is so for allocating trump with ten, kasich, four. and cruz and bush, two each. trump is the leader in total delegates with 17. cruz second place there with ten. rub owe at seven. trump was declared the winner of the republican primary as soon as the polls closed last night. he went before supporters who chanted usa, usa at a victory rally here in manchester. trump is giving a speech that focused on family and the road ahead. >> i really have to begin by paying homage to my parents, mary and fred. they're up there, they're looking down and they're saying this is something very special. they love this country and they're very, very happy right now. we have to thank the candidates because they really ran -- we have some very talented people, and to be victorious against some of these people even if it's for one week, but believe

me, it will be for many weeks, okay? now that i got that over with, you know, it's always tough and then tomorrow, boom, boom. i'll tell you what, what do we really want to thank, right? we want to thank the people of new hampshire. right? do we love the people of new hampshire? >> like democrats, republicans telling exit pollers that they were driven to the polls first and fore most by the economy. it was the top issue for 32% yesterday. government spending ranking as the second most significant concern. immigration down at fourth place in the poll. when it comes to handling a crisis overseas, donald trump was on top among republicans with 30%. jeb bush coming in second there with 17%. the early exit polling shows that 64% of republican voters say that they support a temporary ban on muslims from entering the country. 32% say they oppose the idea. months of campaigning in new

hampshire more than a hundred town hall meetings did help governor john kasich of ohio move into second place last night and speaking to supporters in the state capital of concord, he claimed that is a vindication of his approach. >> we have had tens and tens of millions of dollars spent against us with negative advertising, okay? and we have. we have had tens of millions. see, that's the old politics. that's the old politics. we never went negative because we have more good to sell than to spend our time being critical of somebody else. in a time when clearly change is in the air, maybe just maybe we are turning the page on the dark part of american politics because tonight the light overcame the darkness of negative campaigning. [ cheers and applause ] >> kasich had staked his hopes

for the nomination on a breakout performance in new hampshire. now he faces a much higher hurdle in south carolina and the other states yet to come where he's polling in the low single digits. iowa winner ted cruz meanwhile also looking ahead to south carolina. cruz sits in third place in new hampshire. a decent showing for him. in spite of spending under $700,000 here. >> i want to congratulate donald trump on an impressive win tonight. [ crowd boos ] and john kasich had a good night tonight. but the real winner, the real winner, is the conservative grass roots. [ cheers and applause ] who propelled us to an outright victory in iowa and to a far stronger result and outcome in new hampshire than anyone had predicted. we have put washington on the run. and tonight's outcome is a victory for we the people.

>> an adviser to cruz tweeting this photo of him calling donald trump last night to congratulate him on his victory. at the same time, cruz's campaign also rolled out this new video targeting trump. >> look, i got the trump action figure. >> no, way, it's huge. >> what does he do? >> he pretends to be a republican. [ laughter ] >> i like bailouts for the banks. >> too big to fail. >> i gave money to pelosi and reid and anthony weiner. >> hey, hillary i'll give you money to be my friend. >> that's a lousy house, i'm going to take your house with eminent domain and park my limos there. >> eminent domain! >> we wouldn't tolerate these values in our children. why would we want them in a president?

>> earlier on when the votes were coming in last night, it looked like jeb bush might be able to move into the third place finish, but cruz did creep ahead of him. still, bush's tie for fourth came as something of a sigh of relief to his campaign and last night, he talked about lessons he learned while doing town hall after town hall here in new hampshire. >> the pundits had it all figured out last monday night when the iowa caucuses were complete. they said that the race was now a three-person race between two freshmen senators and a reality tv star. and while the reality tv star is still doing well, it looks like you all have reset the race and for that i am really grateful. we learned the story of a veteran who was declared dead, who didn't get his benefits of course. the social security, because he was declared dead. i will be a president that fixes these things, to honor our veterans and we just like him is not dead.

this campaign is not dead. we're going on to south carolina. >> bush campaign says it feels -- he feels confident heading into south carolina. polling competitively with marco rubio down there. his brother won the state in 2000 and will be on the campaign trail with jeb on friday. after seemingly coming out of iowa with a full head of steam, marco rubio says if you're looking for someone to blame for his underwhelming performance last night, look to him. >> i know many people are disappointed. i'm disappointed with tonight. i want you to understand something. our disappointment is not on you. it's on me. it's on me. i did not -- i did not do well on saturday night, so listen to this. that will never happen again. [ cheers and applause ] >> other campaigns are suggesting it was not just saturday night's debate performance that will hurt rubio in the long wrong.

a bush campaign strategy memo going out to aides and surrogates says, quote, rubio has demonstrated no respect for the nomination process and expects this to be a coronation. after a disappointing sixth place finish here in new hampshire, governor chris christie of new jersey says he's heading back to trenton to take stock of his presidential bid. speaking to supporters in nashua last night, he was both solemn and pragmatic saying he would wait until the final votes were counted before making a decision. >> i have both won elections that i was supposed to lose and i have lost elections i was supposed to win. and what that means is you never know. and it's both the magic and the mystery of politics. that you never quite know when which is going to happen. even when you think you do. and so we leave new hampshire tonight without an ounce of regret. not for the time we have spent.

and for the thousands of people tonight in new hampshire who will have voted for us, we're going to go home to new jersey tomorrow and we're going to take a deep breath, see what the final results are tonight. that's going to allow us to make a decision about how we move from here in this race. >> now, christie announced his candidacy last june and spent more than 70 days campaigning in new hampshire. also locked up the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper, the manchester union leader. but the governor faces a difficult road ahead if he does go on to south carolina. he is polling in the low single digits there. and now to the democratic side and bernie sanders decisive victory over hillary clinton last night. with 93% of new hampshire's precincts reporting, 74-year-old senator from vermont leads clinton by 22 points. 60 to 38%. that's the difference of nearly 50,000 votes. it marks the widest margin of victory in the contested new hampshire democratic primary in

history. on the democratic side, another historical note he's the first jewish candidate to win a presidential primary contest. as for the delegates awarded out of new hampshire, nbc news is allocating 15 to sanders and 8 to clinton. in addition, clinton has the backing of six of the eight superdelegates. that brings the overall count out of new hampshire to sanders, 15 and clinton 14. if you combine those with the delegates awarded out of iowa last week, that gives clinton a lead over sanders of 44 to 36 on what is a very long road to the nomination. nbc called the race for sanders as soon as the polls officially closed here at 8:00 last night. sanders celebrating by playing basketball with his grandchildren in a basement gym beneath his victory party in concord. he then headed upstairs. he was greeted by a raucous crowd, delivered a speech that was true to the message of his campaign.

>> thank you, new hampshire. [ cheers and applause ] shortly after the polls closed, secretary clinton called and was very gracious in her congratulations. i thank her for her call. and i congratulate her and her supporters for the vigorous campaign they ran in new hampshire. together we have sent the message that will echo from wall street to washington, from maine to california. [ cheers and applause ] and that is that the government of our great country belongs to all of the people and not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors and their super

pacs. the people of new hampshire have sent a profound message to the political establishment, to the economic establishment, and by the way, to the media establishment. [ cheers and applause ] thank you, new hampshire. and now it's on to nevada, south carolina and beyond. >> sanders said that he would be traveling to new york city following his speech last night. this morning, he will reportedly sit down for breakfast with the reverend al sharpton in harlem. shortly before sanders took the stage in concord has night, hillary clinton delivered her concession speech in the same gymnasium she held her victory party eight years ago. >> people have every right to be angry. but they're also hungry. they're hungry for solutions. what are we going to do?

[ cheers and applause ] and that is -- that is the fight we're taking to the country. what is the best way to change people's lives so we can all grow together? who is the best change maker? and here's what i promise. here's what i promise, i will work harder than anyone to actually make the changes that make your lives better. i know i have some work to do, particularly with young people. but i will repeat again what i have said this week. even if they are not supporting me now, i support them. more than 700,000 people have contributed to this campaign. the vast majority giving less than $100. i know that doesn't fit with the

welcome back to "way too early." let's turn to some other headlines making news last night. last night, ferguson city council settled with the justice department. it would reform the police systems and the doj said it may consider legal action against the ferguson government after the city moved to limit some of the costs associated with the plan. the shooting death of michael brown sparked unrest in ferguson between police and the black community. the agreement came after the department of justice investigated the city and found multiple civil rights violations. the supreme court has dealt a blow to president obama's climate change initiative. after a 5-4 vote by the justices, the environmental protection agency has been blocked from moving forward with a new plan for cutting green house gas emissions from power

plants. 30 states had filed a petition to halt the energy plan and the d.c. circuit court will review the policy. let's get a check of the weather with raphael miranda. >> good morning, we are tracking the snow across the great lakes again today. you can see it spinning around the great lake, heavy snow falling there. in the big cities of the northeast, light snow showers in philadelphia, moving into the new york city area as well. there could be slippery travel out there from new york city up into connecticut as well. maybe just south of boston. no hefty accumulations in the big cities but we are talking about up to a foot of snow for the great lakes. you can see that lake-effect snow machine in full effect on this wednesday morning. taking a look at the national picture, 16 in chicago. windchills below zero throughout the day there. 41 in central park, not a bad day in new york. cool in florida, 57 in tampa. look at the southwest, near 90 in los angeles. again, near record high temperatures for today. tomorrow more of the same.
