"first look" starts now. good to be with you on this friday. i'm francis rivera. many are bracing for dangerous temperatures, a polar vortex is bringing bone-chilling weather all the way down to florida. parts of new york state are already experiencing winter's bite with whiteout conditions along sections of the new york throughway. in scranton, a water main break made for a mess as power lines and trees were coated in ice. meteorologist steve saw kos is here. you have the east, frigid, bitter cold. out west, extreme heat for them.

>> right. it's a tale of two seasons. summer like across the west, but the real threat is the east. that is where you see this pink shading. not often do you what are life threatening cold, but that's the case across pennsylvania, massachusetts and connecticut. the real tough period of cold comes in tomorrow night through sunday morning. so we have time to prepare for it, but check out these numbers. 40 degree below wind chills. that means you can frostbite in about ten minutes worth of time. nothing to mess around with. if you're headed up to new england for the presidents day weekend, terrible conditions with the cold. you may want to be inside. check out the temperatures by saturday morning, teens in the northeast. it only goes down from there. we'll be tracking the morning throughout the morning here. a nasty round for this weekend. >> i don't remember the last time -- i don't remember what it feels like. >> you don't want to remember it. >> steve, thank you for the update. next, to politics as the two democratic presidential

candidates faced off in milwaukee last night. from attacking president obama to sparring over immigration, civil rights and even henry kissinger. >> today senator sander said that president obama failed the presidential leadership test. this is not first time that he has criticized president obama. in the past he's called him weak, a disappointment. i couldn't disagree more. the kind of criticism that we have heard from senator sanders about our president i expect from republicans, i do not expect from someone running for the democratic nomination to succeed president obama. >> that is, madam secretary that is a low blow. i have worked with president obama for the last seven years. but you know what? last i heard, we lived in a democratic society. last i heard a united states senator had the right to

disagree with the president, including the president who has done such an extraordinary job. so i have voiced criticisms. maybe you haven't. i have. >> well, later sanders hit back on critic saying clinton's campaign is historic and he was thwarting history. >> well, you know, i think from the historical point of view, somebody with my background, somebody with my views, somebody who has spent his entire life taking on the big money interests, i think a sanders victory would be of some historical accomplishment as well. >> well, the share of twitter discussions was a dead tie, although sanders keeping with the recent traditions got more followers. clinton was able to narrow the gap from the start of the debate to the end. and now to the republican race and frontrunner donald trump who is really campaigning hard, hitting all groups. after a rally in baton rouge, he took time to autograph look at

that. that is a baby sporting a mohawk and sporting a bedazzled trump pacifier. it wasn't all fun and games. for much of the day, trump was in a heated back and forth with nemesis ted cruz after he implied that he and marco rubio are with president obama on gay marriage. he responded that cruz is the worst liar, crazy and very dishonest. nbc's hallie jackson has more. >> i'm a volunteer with senator ted cruz. >> reporter: making some 25,000 phone calls a day to topple donald trump here. like he did in iowa. >> in the state of south carolina, i don't think people are interested in someone, a republican candidate who's pushed partial birth abortion, who won't defend marriage. >> reporter: cruz's strategy -- paint trump as too liberal with more ads like this one on the way. >> he pretends to be a republican. >> reporter: for his part, trump seems to be playing a more positive political game than before. >> it's going to be such an unbelievable week and a half.

>> reporter: but in the more mannerly south, his more colorful language may be a big turnoff. >> he gets the nomination, they're going to sue his [ bleep ] off. >> reporter: as the bloomberg focus group found. >> it's crass. >> it's not professional. >> it's not how you want your your presidential united states. >> you turn on the television and you have profanity. >> and they're taking shots at the frontrunners. >> how do you think trump will solve anything? >> jeb bush has no foreign policy experience period. >> reporter: trying to move south carolina isn't simply a two-man fight. >> that was nbc's hallie jackson reporting. it was a dramatic end to a 41-day armed siege at the oregon refuge. three remaining anti-government activists surrendered to fbi thursday after hours of tense negotiations. well, the fourth and final occupier david fry had refused

to come out, but finally turned himself in. all four are expected to face an arraignment before a image us trait judge today. the refuge will remain closed for weeks as the bomb squads sweep for explosives. meanwhile, cliven bundy was arrested after landing at the portland airport. he faces felony charges stemming from the armed standoff with law enforcement two years ago in nevada. four people remain hospitalized this morn argue a frightening attack in an ohio restaurant thursday evening. >> getting additional -- say the male black came in to attack several people. >> they've got at least four injured if you can send four medics. >> copy. >> that call was about a man in a head scarf that came in shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time. he entered the nazareth restaurant in columbus and reportedly began to attack

people with machete. diners threw chairs to stop the attack. well, police chased him with the help of a helicopter. minutes later the suspect was stopped and police unsuccessfully tried to taser him. they say he lunged at officers with the machete and knife and was fatally shot. the fbi is helping but officials say of now, they're not calling it terrorism. at least 49 inmates are dead after a rival drug gang fight. it happened in the prison between a faction of the infamous si that gang and another group. the authorities say there was no gun fire. the officials say the situation is now under control and ruled out the possibility of a prison break. families gathered late thursday, some crying as they awaited news of loved ones. the riot comes less than a week before pope francis is scheduled to visit a different prison further north.

campaign reporter for real clear politics. caitlyn, good morning. we had a late night with the democratic debate going on. another debate, another late night, but let's dive right into it. when you're talking about a night where we're seeing for once kind of this divide between hillary clinton and bernie sanders and getting nasty as some -- at some points. starting off with health care, then going into president obama and his legacy. let's talk about who came out on top and if hillary clinton, whether she did or not is getting the momentum that she needs after losing in new hampshire. >> well, certainly one of her goals is to blunt some momentum that bernie sanders getting after that new hampshire win, especially heading into nevada and south carolina. i think she talked -- she was able to talk about building upon the president's legacy. she talked a lot about how the president trusted her judgment, and she's definitely using that to appeal to voters. especially in south carolina where the president has a coalition built there. and voters -- democratic voter really like the president. so while sanders was able to

keep on his message, clinton was able to undercut him in some ways by talking a lot about, okay, how will you do this? she kept talking about leveling with the american people, that sort of thing. >> doing so in a -- aligning herself with the president as we know. some of the zingers that came out of that, bernie sanders saying one of us ran against president obama, i was not that candidate. the low blow comment and all of that. >> exactly. he is able to challenge her on every turn. i think that's what a lot of his supporters, you know, like about his candidacy. that he is some anti- -- he has some anti-establishment values so he's able to draw those contrasts on her really unafraid on that national stage. >> all right. i want to turn to the gop because we're talking about the clock ticking. at this point, how stoppable is donald trump because you have marco rubio, especially coming across, you know, fifth place in new hampshire. he's saying you know what, i think south carolina is going to

be where i'm going to come back. >> right. >> in this race. then you have jeb bush who has his brother george w. campaigning for him is that going to move the needle at all as far as chasing after trump? >> the south carolina race is in such a scramble right now. new hampshire didn't really provide much clarity so you have several seeking redemption in south carolina. jeb bush as you mentioned has the family connections, connections to veterans in the states, a big military state. his brother, george w. bush is campaigning for him on monday. marco rubio though has planned to win in south carolina for a long time. obviously, the new hampshire results will challenge that. meanwhile, donald trump won by a large margin in new hampshire and heads into south carolina with an advantage. >> well, i wish we had more time because i'll love to delve into ted cruz. about 60% of the voters are evangelicals and he had a poll -- i wish we had more time about this one. >> so much drama. >> caitlyn, cailtyn huey burns,
