last night donald trump threw jabs at just about every one of his republican rifle ans. here -- rivals. >> id never thought we'd see the day when a communist is the leading democrat. we're going to have a communist against an entrepreneur. i like the entrepreneur. right? don't you think? >> meanwhile, democrats are also getting red oo for a big night. bernie sanders and hillary clinton will be speaking at the democratic party's annual dinner in denver, this after holding campaign events. clinton is in nevada. that is the next state on the democratic election calendar with its caucus one week from today. and new today congressman john lewis is clarifying the comment

he made two days ago saying he never saw or met bernie sanders during his involvement in the civil rights movement. of course we have reporters covering all the angles for you. kelly o'donnell is at the white house watching the democrats. gary sanders has the latest on the trump team, gabe gutierrez is keeping an eye on the republicans. the gop fight is getting kind of feisty. what do we expect to see on the stage tonight? >> kind of an understatement, kind of feisty. this thing is feisty as all get-out. south carolina tends to be a bit more rough and tumble. voters here like to see candidates mix it up a little bit. they like to see somebody can both take a pufrp and land a punch, too. that is what we're expecting to see tonight. we're seeing republican rivals ready to rumble. in front of a rowdy florida

crowd, donald trump taking aim at jeb bush. >> he's got that little vicious streak because he's a gutless guy. >> but online a different target, as trump warns ted cruz on twitter if he doesn't, quote, clean up his act, stop cheating and doing negative ads, trump will sue him for not being a natural born citizen. >> there is more than a little irony in donald accusing anyone of being nasty given the amazing tore torrent of insults that come out of his mouth. >> reporter: on the airwaves, the ad wars intensify in new one fr from trump and this one from cruz hits hillary clinton. the ad spoofs the movie "office

him after his second place finish in the new hampshire primary. he's mostly staying positive, trying to stay above the fray. and ben carson looking to do something on that debate stage tonight and prove he still belongs in this race. alex? >> absolutely. hallie jackson, thank you so much. let's bring in south carolina congressman and former governor mark sanford. thank you so much for joining me. let's get right to iowa, new hampshire, traditionally these retail campaigns do best, lots of town halls, the face-to-face interaction with reporters, are they effective or are ads the way to go? >> all. abo -- all of the above. people expect to see you, stump with you but given the size, you have to hit the airwaves as well. it's a bit of both. >> i know your state has a

reputation for playing host to a lot of campaign dirty tricks. are you seeing that this time around? and how much sway does that have on the primary results? >> i've run two statewide elections and i've certainly seen it over the years. it's nothing i condone and endorse but it is alive and well in south carolina. we've not seen it yet. if you look in the "post sand currier," it asks for people to write in, e-mail in if they hear of dirty tricks in any of these elections. i suspect you'll see something between now and saturday. >> i'm looking at friday's "washington post" article. south carolinians aren't just anti-establishment, they're anti-everything if it means

they're expected to perform or roar spond in certain predicted ways." who do you expect to benefit the most from the anti-establishment feeling? >> clearly trump has been benefit from that and i think he'll continue to benefit from that. south carolina is a plate where cadets wild out and started firing in fort sumter years ago. what he's tapping into is much deeper than simply the dynamics of our state. these are like core issues about equality. do people believe in equality in the united states of america in when i was governor, i fought hard against the stimulus package. i heard people saving wait a minute, this isn't fair, this isn't equal. my cousin's pizza shop went out of business, he didn't get a

bailout. you tell me the big banks in new york are getting to get a bailout? there is a question about equal opportunity. ultimately the american system is about i did better than my parents, my kids are going to do better than i've done. you have these forces that are hunk macro forces in play that are certainly going to be reflected in the debate tonight and the election come next saturday in south carolina but they're ultimate lily bigger th what's going on in our state. >> what about trump's lack of civility and crude language, this among people in south carolina known as perhaps the most polite people. how does that go over? i've read articles that suggest not well. >> i think you're right. the articles you suggest are accurate. he's gotten a pass on it right now. i think what's driving the train is this economic populism.

people are really worried about their ability to produce a live li -- livelihood for the kids. i've said this from the beginning. as we get close are and closer to next saturday in south carolina, the field is going to win, it's going to narrow. i don't think that trump will maintain the lead he has right now. i i think it's going to be a jump ball between trump, cruz and i said oddly enough, unless marco has a great debate performance tonight, maybe jeb. i think the reason it's going o narrow is given the history of civility in our state, people are going to say i like what he's getting at, i don't like the why he's doing so. >> jep bush at this time is bare live breaking double digits there.

why do you think that is? what is different? >> i can go through a number of different reasons, this isn't the week to have bush as your name. his brother is coming in for a rally on monday night here in charleston. >> first time out on the campaign trail. >> right. so it's going to be old home week for everybody who has been tied to the bush presidency. a lot of people are showing um here in this state. they're going to be calling in favors and saying, hey, do you remember when? so i think that there is going to be some degree of movement on the jeb bush campaign. if not, he will not have a ticket coming out of the south carolina races into the other races that follow us. >> south carolina has almost always picked the eventual nominee. you have yet to endorse anyone. who do you think could be best posed -- positioned to beat

hillary clinton? >> you're asking for my endorsement. you're good at what you do. you're clever. half of our delegation has not endorsed. at this point i'm sitting it out. i think as much as possible, these things ought to be deliberations by the voters. and then they decide who they want to select. i may or may not endorse between here and next saturday but i won't offer any tea leaves at this point. >> well, you're good at what you do, too, they. you've avoided answering the question but very politely as a south carolinian would do. let's go down to civil rights icon john lewis, who is now clarifying remarks he made. he released a statement just a short time ago that reads in part: "i said when i was leading and was at the center of pivotal actions within the civil rights movement, i did not meet

senator bernie sanders at any time. the fact that i did not meet him in the movement did not mean i doubted that senator sanders participated in the civil rights movement, neither was i attempting to disparage his activism." we bring in kelly o'donnell from the white house. good day to you. what else did he say about this? >> this is so important, alex, because many john loop sewis is sought-after endorsement. often in politics, this can be the kind of situation where office holders or candidates can get tripped up, when they are responding to a question. and what happened is that lewis talked about this idea that he had met bill and hillary clinton back in the 70s and they've remained friends ever since as part of their work in the civil rights movement butch he never saw bernie sanders. some of the investigates working on behalf of hillary clinton were saying that was really a

very sharp charge against sanders, that he had not been part of the movement, sympathetic to those concerns and really involved. so john lewis i think felt a sense of wanting to be even handed here saying the fact he never met sanders personally does not mean he wasn't involved. there have been photos circulated showing sanders at a civil rights event back in the day. i think this is just a kiss where he did not want his words intended to be sort of supportive of the clintons and i think given all of how important this issue of the african-american vote and the democratic primary, he wanted to smooth that over for truthfulness sake, his intention sake. it's a significant development that he would walk back his statement. and what he said is not so much the problem butch , but he want give this additional

clarificati clarification, that he didn't mean to impugn sanders' involvement in the civil rights movement. >> i want to have you tell us a little bit about what happened at that dinner last night. both of the candidates talked about president obama. how did that go back? >> minnesota invites the big candidates to come in and sort of get the whole crowd riled up and each of them, clinton and sanders, gave a lot of their typical sort of stump speech, policy ideas pretty straight forward. pu what people are listening to carefully is how do they align themselves or is there any distance between their campaigns, candidacy and president obama? we heard first from bernie sanders and then hillary clinton. . here what's they had to say. >> we have got to be honest and

to acknowledge we still have a very, very long way to go to create the nation that i know all of us believe we can create. >> i think millions of americans are better off because of his presidency so i, yes, will build on the progress he's made because i am a progressive who actually likes to make progress! >> and for bernie sanders, when you're talking about revolution and you base your whole campaign at first at the core on this economic message, it's hard to be fully supportive of a sitting incumbent president even of your own party if political revolution is what you're talking about. so for hillary clinton, much easier for her and much more foreign for h important for her in terms of embracing the legacy of president obama. >> thanks, kelly o'donnell at

lot of people who were active with sn i c and ak -- active. i think it was decent of him to back this up so quickly. >> why do you think the cbc pac endorsed hillary clinton? >> i don't know. i know when my good friend congressman meeks gave a speech, it centered on loyalty. i get that. but we have multiple loyalties. i'm supporting bernie sanders because my greatest loyalty is to this rise of young people and to senior citizens. the reality is making sure -- i want to back the candidate who is going to did the most to make sure our young people are not led deeper into debt as they go to college. i want to support the candidate who is going to do the most it make sure our senior citizens are properly supported with

social security. and i want to support the candidate who is going to do the most to make sure that our small business people have great opportunity and access to credit. and in each case bernie sanders is the candidate who is going to go the furthest, fight the furthest, make sure, in other words, that if we have to compromise with the republican congress, he will inherit but i think likely transform by the mid terms if not before, that that congress frankly is pushed to the maximum point when they compromise. you know, martin luther king said once it wasn't the bigots that was the biggest problem, it was the moderates, the moderates who knew better and yet did not do enough. we don't need a moderate who is not going to do enough. we need an idealist who will fight for all of us. >> some say senator sanders doesn't have the support from the african-american to become

the nominee. >> what does he have to did it gain the support? >> this campaign has been fighting the biggest dynasty in our politics. there is no grand that's more powerful, no family that's more powerful in all of politics than the clintons we used to say it was the bushes and the clintons but it's no longer the bushes, that's clear. i think folks understand when you are an upstart, he started off with 3% in the polls, he was an upstart, you have to focus on iowa and focus on new hampshire and if you get beyond that, black folks are we're willing to look seriously. we want to know you're a serious candidate because we're serious about our vote. our folks are starting to look at bernie, he's out of new hampshire and folks are increasi increasingly liking what they're see. i've talked to a lot of folks here who have switched their loyalty and every day more and more support turns over to

bernie. the only question is how fast and how far. >> i'm curious about the candidates in a virtual tie thai heading into the nevada caucus. that's two weeks from today oo the 27th. can the vote in south carolina influence nevada? >> absolutely. these are the two big blocks, if you will, in the democratic party. they're two of the biggest ones, very much aligned with the voters here and the voters on super tuesday, especially super tuesday where you have state like mississippi and texas in play. and so, yeah, you aknow, what happens in nevada is as important what happens here in south carolina and super tuesday is very much in place. it very much in play. >> how about ultimately, ben, will you support the democratic

nominee whether it's senator sanders, as you have endorsed or secretary clinton? >> i think the reality is that if liz warren was running, you'd see a lot of clinton and bernie supporters that were on the same team. we were on the same team before this, we were on the same team after this. nobody wants a president trump or president cruz or rubio, any of those governors who are running over there. so, yes, absolutely. and for that matter when i talk to people who support mrs. clinton who are hoping she will win this time and actually pull it out and not suffer a defeat like she did in 2008, they say exactly the same thing. >> ben, always good to talk to you. thank you so much. >> thank you. always good to talk to you. >> standing out in a thinning crowd. what each of the candidates has to do to make an impression in tonight's gop debate. you can't breathed. through your nose.

wanted to interact with voters. he knows he's needs to change the focus of his campaign or at least the attention of his campaign to his foreign policy skills, his national security experience. that is what he's really trying to focus on. his critics such as governor jeb bush have gone back and said he doesn't have the experience necessary to be president but marco rubio is responding to that. here's when he said to us yesterday when we asked him about those attacks. >> the presidency is not a bookkeeping job. the presidency is about leadership and in particular on national security i have shown better judgment and have more experience on that not just than jeb bush but anybody else running on the republican side as well. >> now, all eyes will be on marco rubio tonight during this debate. again, as he seeks to rebound from last week's debate. jeb bush is expected to go after him. they're both fighting for that establishment lane of the party, so while ted cruz and donald trump are also expected to go at

does this feel as calculated as his repetitive message and is it? >> reporter: well, i think they had no choice after the last disastrous debate and the effect it had on the new hampshire results. one of the things going into this, debates really very seldom move the needle that much, but a bad performance is just a killer. and so going forward, rubio has to show that he can adapt, that he can talk off the cuff and they're just trying to let the candidate be himself a little bit more i think. >> okay. i want to look ahead with you to tonight's debate. i'm going to ask you about each candidate and like to you give me a line or two about how you would advise them going into the evening. i want to start with donald trump. there's a "washington post" headline reading "the south carolina primary is donald trump's to lose." what does he need to do? >> he needs to avoid errors,

doesn't need to get nasty. he needs keep his calm. he's ahead by about 16 polls. in 20 of the polls in south carolina, 19 he's won. he just needs to keep a cool head, which is hard for him to do. >> ted cruz. >> he has to land a point on donald trump. >> jeb bush? >> jeb bush needs to make an impression. he needs to come out, be strong, be commanding, show he has the strong command of policy that he really does have. >> marco rubio, does he need to take that chatty from dealing with reporters to being that way on the debate stage? >> marco rubio could use some fresh talking points tonight.

he needs to seem like he can think on his feet and not just stick to prepared remarks. >> john kasich. >> he could really use a bre breakout moment tonight. he really has to make it to ohio and michigan in early march. so he needs to get some kind of fund-raising boost to have some kind of moment that makes supporters say, hey, we're willing to invest in your campaign. >> and ben carson, is this his last shot at anything? >> poor ben carson at this point. i think it is. he has improved in his debate performance and has clearly done his homework but i think it's too far gone and kind of a lost cause a the this point. if he can just have a nice performance where he seems solid, seems like he has a good command of the facts, that will help him going on from here reputationally as he reestablishes his brandpo post

>> bernie sanders is holding an event in reno and he's going to then being going to colorado. you were right the first time. they both have to convince the latino community here. people here want to be with someone and support someone who has the compassion to think about the peel. when i've been out talking to people about who they'll support, it has been a very close tie. you have people who say hillary clinton has long ties here, that they really love bill clinton in nevada, that she's spoken to latino community here and really told them that she's championed them for decades, but bernie sanders, coming out of iowa and new hampshire really has this narrative that he is gaining momentum and that people should really give him a second look and he's buying millions of

dollars of tv ads here and sell himself and his message. his volunteers say they're knocking on doors all the time all day long to introduce heem to bernie sanders and convince them he can win the general election if elected. >> thank you for clarifying about reno. i forgot. it's hard to keep track of all these guys. be betsy, what is their take on all the demographics? we have about 20% of the democrats being hispanic, about 10% or so african-american? >> i think the upside for bernie sanders going into nevada is it's a caucus state. it's going to be a much smaller turnout, people who can carve out one or two hours of their evening to be at a specific place at specific time. ilt complicated getting people to turn out to the caulk uses nap could give sand ears leg up, only because his supporters seem

to be so incredibly devoted. it's the kind of thing wahere yu hear how much folks like him. that's an up side for him in nevada. that said, there hasn't really been a ton of polling. so we're not totally sure what exactly is going on on the ground and it still anyone's game. >> absolutely. yamiche, let's looked ahead. does bernie sanders stand a chance, particularly among black voters? >> the experts i've talked to say he does have a chance. he's been able to in the last couple of weeks get endorsements from african-american leaders. he's gotten people like the former naacp president to endorse him, coates, who had criticized him also came out and said he would be voting for

senator sanders and then he have always his surrogates, all these people who are going african-american, that they shouldn't just give away their votes to the clintons. they should really take a look at bernie sanders' message. and they're stressing that bernie sanders didn't change his mess am when he's talking to african-americans and his interest in fixing the criminal justice system and reforming police departments, that's something he says even in iowa when he's in a room full of white people. i've witnessed that. that could be the strength bernie sanders has going into south carolina. >> he has invested in south carolina big time. he has a huge operation opt ground there, considerably larger than hillary clinton's at this point. betsy, i want to shift gears to the republican side. we have former president george bush getting ready to join his brother jeb. it bush 43. he's very popular in social

security. he won the primary, he won in 2000 and '04. do you think we'll see him out on the campaign trail elsewhere beyond just south carolina where he's popular? >> that's a good question. i think it plausible. the next major voting states are mostly in the south, the sec primary and they florida. i think the important thing to remember with george w. bush is that even though nationally among all voters, he isn't a uniquely popular former president, among republican prime rip voters, he might be the figure on the ride. last your showed 80% of likely prime rich voters approved of his presidency. that's a big number. it also curious that jeb and his team didn't bring out george w. bush earlier on the campaign trail. rm so the question that he faces is does he embrace the last

clinton is dedicated to fighting against the nra, if need be, but giving gun rights and making sure that they're extended checks for gun owners. we're concerned that senator sanders has sided with and has fought against extended background checks. >> i know mrs. clinton's ground operation is fairly small, 14 staffers, as opposed to bernie sanders, who has a whopping 240. why do you think that is? does that leave room for sanders to move in? your colleague has said that mrs. clinton made have taken the black vote for granted. >> well, i -- of course, i am one of the folks on the ground for senator clinton and i do not believe she has taken our vote for granted.

we are going to begin there with an overview of the gop field with you, hallie. as you know, just a short time ago, two key texas newspapers passed up the chance to endorse ted cruz. instead they backed up john kasich and jeb bush respectively. how big a blow is this to the cruz camp? >> frankly, alex, it's probably not a devastating blow to the cruz campaign. remember, ted cruz has sort of made an issue of railing against the media. he likes to portray himself as this outsider insurgent. so not getting endorsements from what they call sort of the mainstream press is really nothing to them at this point. interesting that one of those papers did pick john kasich, not the hometown candidate, jeb bush. it may be something in you're in the establishment pain as both of those candidates look to push their candidacies forward in south carolina. for cruz, we've soon this before

with other endorsements. he sort of blows it off and moves on. it gives mim a chance to say, look, we're not the candidate that the mainstream media wants to you pick. that's why you should come on board in this political cycle where the outsider and that type of campaign has seemed to be successful so far. look at donald trump. >> speaking of donald trump, he is tweeting at ted cruz, "if ted cruz doesn't clean up his act, stop cheating and doing negative ads, i have standing to sue him for not being a natural born citizen. any reaction? >> reporter: yes. this is donald trump doing so often what donald trump does, stirring the pot ahead of tonight's debate. in a different speech he called

cruz a liar and nasty this week. cruz is calling this another trumper tantrum, this hash tag they want to get going. cruz has said it's a torrent of insults coming from donald trump's mouth. that was the senator's reaction yesterday when he was asked about this he is not going to return fire in the same way but he will be drawing contrast on policy. it's something we've seen him do already in the last 24 hours. it's a really storyline as we head into tonight's debate. how will trump and cruz go at each other and which issues, like eminent domain, will rise to the top? >> you're right. one may just do that! >> let's bring in karen. i do want to starp with donald trump tonight here, he comes into tonight's debate leading

candidate has the best ground game there? great question. governor bush i think may surprise people. i've watched his team and they have been exceptionally organized and communicating very well with what i call the grass roots. but remember, this is a different election than anything i've ever seen because you have this populist movement that's wa sh disorganized. i've seen folks particular will i in the trump and cruz attend yoos that really pass all geographic, racial norms. with the bush, you see a little more established attendees. i think tonight is going to be very, very important. it's been mentioned over and over again. in our states, these debates are

tightly watched. they can to. >> ted cruz won iowa. how are evangelicals perhaps different in south carolina and what does that do for trum? >> i think again this populist movement you have some vertical lines and some horizontal lines. i think what's happened with this populist movement is there was a cut that's gone kind of against the grain. so what trump has been able to do exceptionally well is cobble lots of different sectors and come up with different numbers. again, i think this is a very, very important night for someone like and his organization stays in tact and they continue with the momentum that i'm seeing and feeling, i think he may be the surprise. >> how about that which was sort

of the talk of the town after it became known that an adult film actress appeared in this is politics as usual. it was done in a snap moment, someone has to make a decision. have i no ill will against ted cruz right now. he has a job to do. i'm a middle class working girl and i have a job to do. >> do you expect to see any impact on the religious voter in terms of its support for senator cruz? >> absolutely not. up know, those kind of things are not the types of things that really will -- that will what i call topple someone. the errors or the forced eireroars, competency, not decisions happen being along the course of an actual campaign. not being authentic, saying

they're responding to a question but they give an answer but they haven't really thought through all of the plim impli play cases. he did meet the clintons in the 70s and has been fwrend them ever since. he did apologize. it's not going to satisfy those who support bernie sanders. so much has been said about iowa and new hampshire being states that have much, much smaller african-american or la teen oti communities, perhaps he does not have the same sort of access or

credibility in the african-american community, something sanders' campaign definitely wants to dispute. so john lewis, congressman of georgia and a long-time and it will be part of the political fray now whether that was enough, whether it was successful and whether it would have any lingering impact. >> thank you very much. last night in minneapolis the two sparred over president obama's legacy. st >> we have got fob honeto be ho acknowledge we still have a very, very long way to go to create the nation that i know all of us believe we can create. >> i think millions of americans are better off because of his

presidency. so i, yes, will build on the progress he's made because i am a progressive who actually likes to make progress! >> well, let's bring in former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. and former governor of new mexico, bill richardson. governor richardson, always good to see you. weep shou we should note you were a candidate for the democratic presidential race in 2008. what do you make of the two democrats debating the legacy? >> i think hillary clinton is doing the right thing. she's pointing out differences without being personal. bernie sanders did try to separate himself from president obama in '08 and later and i think hillary clinton is trying to make differences with sanders over issues like obama care

because bernie sanders wants to do medicare for all. it's impractical. it's not going to happen. the obama legacy on foreign policy and environmental issues. butti is think at the same timen south carolina unless you have support from the african-american community in a democratic primary and unless you have funds for television ads, you're not going to get very far. bernie and secretary clinton have that advantage right now. but i think what secretary clinton is doing is combining her strength as a potential commander in chief and. experience and at the same time saying she can work on behalf of working families, on economic issues, on women's issues. i think it's a good strategy. that debate she had the other day was i think another turning point in a positive direction

for her. >> getting details from that debate, she went after bernie sanders over what she saw as lack of support for president obama. >> today bernie sanders said that president obama failed the presidential leadership test and this is not the first time that he has criticized president obama in the past, he's called him weak, he's called him a disappointment, he wrote a foreword for a book that argued that voters should have buyers remorse when it comes to president obama's leadership and legacy. i just couldn't disagree more with those kinds of comments. >> those comments there sanders called a low blow. did the sanders book blurb constitute a personal attack on the president? >> well, i think the book which bill press was a criticism of the president. i know that bernie sanders'

foreword may have been interpreted as negative. it might not have been. but i think the point here is these are legitimate criticisms. bernie sanders did try to talk about a primary opponent for president obama. this is legitimate. this was not personal. i don't think it was a low blow. i think what hillary clinton was trying to do politically in south carolina you have to get the african-american vote. and she's simply saying to the. vote that on obama care, on civil rights issues, she's very strong with the i know that secretary clinton, i know she said it actually was a blurb in the book written by bernie sanders. i want to make that very clear here. i do want to ask you about the republicans in tonight's debate. you ran for president. tell me what's going on today

for these candidates. >> well, what's going on today is their advisers, they're having mork debates. it's all based on the latest news cycles, rubio is probably coming out with very strong statements to make up for his last debate. you're also needing to rest. i think if you try to do too much the day of a debate, you tend to make mistakes, you tend not to be at your best mentally. but today in the morning and perhaps last night intebsive mock debates where your advisers throw you the worst possible questions but also find lines that will dominate a new cycle in a favorable way. that's what you're doing right now. >> but i want toic up, which it appears to be what marco rubio did. >> yeah, that's right. he was obviously tired.

i could see that he was sweating. and that happens many times when u try to do too much. these are kaccampaigns where yo have to be up all the time. you're under so much pressure, so much scrutiny, you're on airplanes, you're at rallies. so, yeah, i think that's the danger. but what rubio did is repeating his talking points several times. it's all right to have your talking point but make your point and move on to the next talking point that deals with the issues that you want to highlight in south carolina. and i suspect in south carolina veal issues, immigration issues, what's going to dominate deelt bait tonight? >> governor bill richardson, always a pleasure. thank you for your time. the intensified sanders/clinton battle is just one of the topics we'll speak about with reverend

donald trump creating a stir with just another tweet. this time calling out the rnc. what's going on, kerry? >> reporter: it's probably no surprise that donald trump is not embraced by the establishment, by the republican national committee. when they put out a flier today including his name to raise money, donald trump responded with a tweet that said the rnc, which is probably not on my side, just illegally put out a fund-raising notice saying trump wants to you contribute to the rnc. well, it was shortly thereafter that the rnc, which had included donald trump's name in a flier then pulled his name off there so the rnc again has responded in this case to donald trump.

it's just sort of a little bit more of a in fighting we're seeing among the republican party and it's exemplary of the back biting and the tone of this race in general and so we turn to somebody who has watched the presidential primaries for a very long time, a gentleman who is 92 years old. >> he makes me want to turn my tv off, really. i don't think i would talk to the other fellas hike that. it's his thinking, you know, as long as it's all in a politic way. i've been around a long time, hoover days, i've been around. i remember hoover and franklin delano roosevelt. he was my man then. hoover, he's a good feller. but i've been around a long time. >> they didn't talk about each other quite like that but there were the hoovervilles and all that. you remember that? >> yeah, they slandered one another a little bit. that goes with politics.

candidate if they choose to support one and people would take that along with whatever the candidates are saying, the substance, and make their own decisions. nobody delivers any votes from any constituents. >> i'm curious what happened with you and bernie sanders. ism know you sat down with him in harlem on wednesday, did an interview. did you see something that you found inspiring? >> we had a long meeting on civil rights issue before and then i did a taped interview with him and mrs. clinton that will be airing on my show in the morning. i wasn't to know the substance, get behind the slogans and the sound bites and when they are really saying. i think the takeaway from bernie sanders, he's very sincere, he's been involved a long time, and i think that he has thought out some things. others i think that we'll wait and see. in fact, he's meeting with civil

rights lead thaters that i'll bt of this week and a lot of us are concerned with health care and how it deals with blacks. >> there's a racial element even in the whole argument about balance mayoillionaires having money just because we increased the middle class. if you don't deal with inclusion in that, then blacks still get the short end of the stick and any data proves that. that's what i want to hear and we're beginning to hear that but i haven't heard as much as i would want from either candidate yet. >> one thing we have heard a lot of is the back and forth between obama's legacy between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. how far can a candidate go criticizing a sitting president from the same party without it backfiring? >> well, i think the votes are

will have to determine that. i would think not too far. but i think you can have areas of disagreement. it's also how you disagree and whether you go into disparaging him, whether you wanted to remove him and whether or not you were feeding in to the forces that were opposed to him because some have been so vitriolic in their criticism, they were helping the right win. >> is bernie sanders in all -- not right wing but has he crossed a line? >> again, voters are going to determine that. some have been a little concerned when he was -- seemed to be encouraging a fight to give the president a primary. now, you have primaries for sitting presidents but some would say that i didn't know he went that far. others will say that it was a fight within the democratic party over policies. many people, and clearly the polls indicate the voters in south carolina feel the president was going in the right

direction and has had highest favorables we've seen in a long time for a sitting president by south carolina democrats. so i can understand why secretary clinton and senator sanders are talking a lot about president obama and south carolina. i ran in 2004. i know the voters there. we have a chapter there now that's very active and they tend to be a different kind of voters than we saw in iowa and new hampshire. not only based on race but also that region of the country is a little more conservative democrat and want to hear more substance that we might talk about in a lot of our shows. >> talk about the kind of substance that you heard in these two interviews you conducted this week with bernie sanders and hillary clinton. as you mentioned, they'll be on your show tomorrow in their totality but what did you take away from them? what were the big points? >> i think the big points that are they both agreed that we've got to deal with the question of

how we assure that as we build toward more employment and the president has really brought it all the way down to 4%, how do we make sure that blacks are proportionate li proportionately involved in that building, how we deal with things like flint, michigan. senator sanders said the governor ought to resign. senator clinton forced a debate they're going to did and has been there. i'm hearing more suburb stance there -- substance there. these are the kind of things this race must be about, the direction the country is going, whether we continue in that direction, as president obama has as started it or whether we pivot and go back toward the reagan/bush kind of model of governing you know millennials have been broadly breaking for bernie sanders. do you have see a split in that

just a matter of hours now before the critical gop debate in greenville, south carolina. let's bring in today's reporter panel. abby phillip is a political reporter for t"the washington post" and pam levy is a reporter with "mother earth jones." this debate you are two hours or so i understand from the debate site but i know one of your colleagues have written that south carolina is donald trump's to lose. what's your take? >> well, i mean, every poll says that he's leading in the polls and not only that but he also has a lot of support in the rural parts of this country -- of this state. when i was driving around some of the more rural parts, you only see basically donald trump signs out there. and that tells you that the reach of the campaign's organization has -- has managed to go into the parts of the state that are not necessarily very densely populated but where you have a lot of word-of-mouth and also a lot of evangelical

voters coming out in force. on that end he'll be competing with ted cruz so that's where i think the competition comes in. >> abby, do you have a sense of who has the most energy out there on the ground? >> well, i think that, you know, we know a lot about ted cruz's organization because they've really been touting it as a kind of 21st century, data-driven kind of thing. last night ted cruz rallied about 14,000 evangelical christians at a concert here in columbia and that was really about sort of getting the energy of that very important segment of voters here. some of those folks are younger, and it's a bit of a last-minute boost possibly going into the south carolina contest. on the other hand, donald trump's support has really not diminished even despite the fact that ted cruz did better than expected in the first two states. so, we will see what happens in the last few days. i mean, these races can really change on a dime. >> yeah. pamela, i want to ask you about

hillary clinton's ground game there. it's been reported that she's got 14 paid staffers compared to bernie sanders. i think the number is 240. how are the two stacking up? what are you sensing? >> yeah. that's a big difference. and i think that one of the things that was really telling was that after -- actually on the very night of the new hampshire primary, clinton's campaign manager sent out a memo really downplaying south carolina and saying we're looking ahead to march contests, we're looking to super tuesday, we're looking to other states. so, i do think that the clinton campaign is trying to downplay expectations for south carolina and when you look at those ground game numbers you can sort of see why that be one of the reasons. >> ladies, i'm almost out of time, but i want to ask you each who you think will win the debate. abby, you first. >> i think we'll see ted cruz do pretty well. he's got the wind at his back and i think he's known for throwing some sharp elbows, so we'll see more of that tonight. >> pamela, your thoughts? >> i think that donald trump has
