12:03 pm
standing there with my daughter in his arms. my first reaction was this can't be real. does he really have my baby, who is this. he said really quietly, hey little mama, you see this knife. >> the knife has a five-inch serrated blade and wallace is pressuring it against zoe's side. he hands keating his cell phone and makes a bizarre demand that she call a man named kevin in dallas. >> she is trying to do what he requests but she is nervous and can't get the number pulled up and can't call it. >> i was going to do everything in my power to make sure my baby didn't leave the store with him. so i panicked and started screaming at the top of my lungs. please help me. this man has my baby. please help me. as soon as i knew i had everybody's attention, the store got eerily quiet and everyone kind of crowded around. >> with zoe under his arm, wallace starts to walk away. >> i followed him along.
12:04 pm

12:06 pm
about conspiracy theories. he feels like the government is watching him and indicates that president george bush has been watching him. and he continues to ask us to call kevin, this dallas police officer. so we actually get ahold of kevin and kevin doesn't know mr. wallace, only knows he has his numbers and calls him so many times it is almost to an harassing point. >> the negotiators tell wallace they're unable to reach kevin and offer him a chair to sit down. it was a tactical advantage for us because we knew we had his movement restricted. if we do have to shoot mr. wallace, the child won't fall from a six-foot level of height but from a smaller level. >> zoe is remarkably calm but wallace is deteriorating by the minute. >> he's sweating profusely, he's obviously agitated and irritated. david, who's trained in crisis intervention knows that mr. wallace is having a manic episode. he's trying to calm him down. >> but after more than 30 minutes of negotiations, wallace still isn't cooperating.
12:07 pm
instead he begins counting down. >> get kevin here within 60 minutes or i'm going to hurt this child. then it accelerated to 30 minutes and then 60 seconds. he started in tens. he went 60, 50, 40, 30, 20. captain huff knew this is extremely critical, and at the same time he takes the knife from the rib cage and puts it up to zoe's chin and neck and the child starts to quirm. that's when captain huff felt the child was being injured. >> wallace's countdown doesn't stop and captain huff is forced to make a decision. >> this particular case when he has the child clinched so close to him and close to his head, he knew he had only one option to shoot him in the head. he knew it had to be point blank range. he tried to squat down to divert sammy's attention. he diverts his attention to sergeant miller and looks to the left which was a good tactical approach on our part. >> captain huff walks toward wallace, points his weapon at
12:08 pm
wallace's head and pulls the trigger. >> i heard the shot go off and i thought, oh, my god, they just killed her. i thought she's dead. i just started screaming and jumping around. >> the shot kills sammy wallace and saves the life of 2-year-old zoe. >> captain huff takes zoe out of sammy's arms. he immediately hands her off to sergeant miller who rushes her up to alicia, who's at the front of the store. >> when i saw zoe i nearly flew through that door. she had blood all over her. he kept saying it's not her blood. it's not her blood. she's okay. i reached out and grabbed her and pulled her in to me. and it was the best moment. it was the best moment of my life. >> come here. can i have a kiss? >> the s.w.a.t. team approaches wallace, they remove the knife, throw it to the side and then wallace falls out of the chair onto the floor.
12:09 pm
that's how we disarmed him. he literally still had the knife clinched in his hand even after being shot in the head. >> police discovered wallace had spent the last decade incarcerated in texas prisons. >> we learned from his family that he was paranoid schizophrenic, not taking his medication. >> i felt sorry for him. my heart broke for him. i don't want anybody to die and i pray for his family. >> it's a horrible situation, but we had no choice. sammy wallace dictated the end of this situation. david huff is a hero. this will affect captain huff for the rest of his life. i'm sure his heart was up in the middle of his throat when he pulled the trigger, but he saved that child's life. >> it is because of his decision that my daughter is alive. my hugs are a lot tighter. when i watch her play i've never been more thankful. coming up, an overachiever at dizzying heights. >> i was so nervous about jumping with her. i had never taken anyone that old. >> three, two, one.
