going forward, but i don't see he is the nominee. it looks like she can't be the nominee. i don't think the party is going to say, the democratic establishment -- >> final word, ten seconds. >> if she can't win in the states where the unions control the process, where can she win a caucuses. >> she won't win any caucus. >> ten in march, by the way. >> all right, thank you all. this was a good one. good way to end the week. we'll be back with more "mtp daily," sunday, it's meet the press, right after shakeup saturday. you don't want to miss that. "with all due respect" starts right now. i'm mark halperin. >> i'm john helemann. >> and i'm jim clyburn, with all respect to my friend bernie sanders, i'm with hillary. that's pretty good there, right. >> not bad. tgif sports fans. presidential candidates might be dreading what comes this week
3:01 pm
end. we are back on the university of south carolina campus in columbia. our last day here on the eve of two key presidential contests. the great expectations games are underway for the republican primary, here and the democratic caucuses three times underway in nevada. we spent the week driving the two-lane highway of the palmetto state. let's go through each candidate starting with donald j trump. on the last day, the new york billionaire spent his day in myrtle beach. the big news came from overseas, where a spokesman says for pope francis, building walls, being not christian, the pontiff was in no way hurling a brick bat at the donald. any way, trump is dominating in south carolina. polls for months. a new marist poll has his lead
3:02 pm
shrinking to just five meager points over ted cruz. what, for donald trump, constitutes media expectation and what if anything could beating expectation. >> vatican radio-radio. >> it requires a very sensitive fingertip feel, because of that nbc poll and other polls, his lead narrowing, winning by five or more. beating is breaking 33%. >> wow, that's very precise. >> it is these fingertips have seen a lot of south carolina primaries. >> i say he has to win, to beat expectation, got to be, got to be over 10 points, and got to be over 40 to beat -- >> over 40, no. >> to deet expectations. to meet, mid 30s. >> people no longer expect -- i'll tell you why. >> you don't think people expect
3:03 pm
him to win by five, you think people think it's going to be a razor win? >> i'll say this. whatever he wins by, he is going to win, everybody says he'll win big on tuesday in the nevada caucuses. >> okay. we're going to ask a lot of these fancy questions today, but my question for you is this on this matter. what donald trump does first? what happens? >> march 1st becomes very big. he'll still win in nevada big. on to ted cruz who picked up a big south carolina endorsement today from the congressman from the state and a former governor, mark sanford, who appeared with cruz in charleston this afternoon. cruz also went with phil robertson and super pac blasted the airwaves with two new ads today, featuring south carolina former jim demitt. a judge in chicago agreed to hear a case eligibility.
3:04 pm
same question as before. what would it take here for cruz to meet expectations and what will it take to beat expectation as soon tations. >> meeting expectations, finishing second. beating, first. anything below is a problem. >> even second, if he can't beat trump in this, i agree. second meets expectations, no matter what, the first, but i will say, again, we have now answered the questions of margins. if he gets second and he is neck in neck with trump, he'll still have beaten expectations. >> by getting really close, within three points. but i think the big fear for him out, and polling out that suggests, nbc wall street marist poll, we have faith in. local polling, we're not going to cite it, and that marco rubio
3:05 pm
has gotten over ted cruz. >> or at least threatening him. >> and cruz falls to third place, it is not a mortal blow, but it would be a big deflation for ted cruz. people thought might win this primary to finish third employee marco rubio. speaking of marco rubio, nikki haley endorsed him on wednesday. she and senator tim scott were out on the campaign trail today, holding five, count them five, rallies. this, after scheduling challenges made rubio stand up to voters at the conservative review conference in pauly's island, unforche rescheduled it tonight. a lot of eyes on young marco. who constitutes meeting and beating expectations? >> this one is easy too. beating jeb bush and finishing ahead of him, whether it's third or second. beating is beating ted cruz and
3:06 pm
obviously big casino beating expectations would be finishing first. marco rubio, people think he was riding high before he got the governor's endorsement from bouncing back from new hampshire. and the press, i think doesn't have the ability to evaluate how south carolina voters see that imagine we've seen all week now of gowdy, nikki haley, and marco rubio. but if he is doing well, part of is that momentum he has dominating the news coverage. >> i agree on that analysis. i will say that meeting is a little problem for marco rubio. the ted cruz campaign will rightly say marco rubio competed like crazy here. he had the entire republican establishment, most of it behind him in an establishment state, and very good story, one of our colleagues talked about how much he spent here. out spent everybody by an order of magnitude. if he comes in third in this state, what state is marco rubio going to win that question will be begged, asked, i don't know what the answer is for him.
3:07 pm
>> he has a better chance to win after jeb bush gets out if jesh jeb bush get out. jeb bush now? >> and now jeb bush. the former florida governor, three campaign events on the western parts of the state with his beloved mother barbara. greenville when barbara bush arrived. >> thrilled. >> what -- >> i was here for my father's wedding. >> what do you think is going to happen? >> i hope he's going to do very, very well. he is by far the best qualified. >> also, greenville event, two jeb bush's president, never president, neil and marvin bush. optimistic about his chances tomorrow. afterward, i caught up with the candidate himself. he had a bit of a chance to chat about family and south carolina. >> a lot of love in your family.
3:08 pm
>> yeah. not surprising. >> no, it's not surprising, but not always the case with competitive siblings. >> no, we love each other a lot. >> a lot of bush family elections. how big is tomorrow? >> important. south carolina has always been important for running for president, and certainly in my family, it's been a part of it. no question about it. >> tight focus, some speech today by jeb bush. great as always in the q and a. clear nervousness in bush world what for tomorrow, beating meeting? >> barbara bush, never going to be named neil or marvin in the white house. i like those guys. look, jeb bush's expectations are so low now that they are that he will finish in either fourth or fifth. meeting expectations. finishing third or above, getting above marco rubio would
3:09 pm
be exceeding and probably allow him to go on. >> everybody assumes if he does not meet or beat expectations, if he doesn't finish ahead of rubio, he'll get out. i thought that until this morning. i'm not sure after watching him today. i still think he thinks it's playing out until march 1st, because he agrees with what you suggested before, which is say it is a kasich, rubio, cruz contest. jeb bush doesn't see where rubio wins a state, so why not stay in. >> the biggest question is going to be he is going to come under extraordinary pressure, and he'll finish fourth or fifth. what does he do when the establishment comes to him and say you must get out for the good of the party. >> the bush bell rang. >> rival republicans beating each other. john kasich has hugged his way to the white house. powerful moment at his town hall in clemson, south carolina,
3:10 pm
where kasich's supporter spoke about his personal struggles. >> i was in a dark place for a long time. i was pretty depressed, but i found hope and found in the lord, and in my friends, and now i've found it in my presidential candidate that i support, and i really appreciate one of those hugs you've been talking about. >> guedespite some buzz, the te has been talking down his prospects, despite his second place in new hampshire. mark, question, meeting/beating, what constitutes? >> meeting is fifth or sixth. and beating would be i think fourth or even a strong fifth. a strong fifth. >> tie jeb bush in fourth. >> but my hats off to kasich
3:11 pm
campaign. they've handled it perfectly. did somati did some advertising, new hampshire might light a fair, and then realizing it wasn't happening, they instantly spun everybody successfully and said nothing to see here, he has nothing on the line, he is about michigan, ohio, some of the super tuesdays where he'll be tomorrow. very well played. >> i think that's right. hats off to him. he has done a good job. the whole south carolina campaign is worth it for that moment. the hug moment like chris christie, it got him something special going. that moment encapsulates kasich in a profound way and not going to help him here in south carolina, but i'll tell you if, is still in the race, competing for independent voters, blue collar, reagan democrat types, moderate, that's the type of suburban women say i like that guy. >> apparently was the only
3:12 pm
camera there, c-span footage, and for john kasich's point of view, that event never would have happened. >> decision time in nevada, bernie and hillary and great expectations game played on the democratic side right after this. i take pictures of sunrises, but with my back pain i couldn't sleep and get up in time. then i found aleve pm. aleve pm is the only one to combine a safe sleep aid plus the 12 hour pain relieving strength of aleve. i'm back. aleve pm for a better am.
3:13 pm
3:14 pm
and now for something completely different, news on the democratic side in the presidential race. congressman jim clyburn, a giant for years and years, endorsed hillary clinton today. we'll bring you john's interview with the congressman a little later in the program. the race is looking so close in the silver state, they're calling it a coin toss. a day to go before the saturday caucuses, the two democratic
3:15 pm
campaigns had frpress releases d what he said about president obama, the sanders side hitting clinton to wall street firms. last night, clinton was asked about a topic that she has been struggling to overcome, questions about her varsity and honesty. >> do you know in '76, jimmy carter said i will not lie to you? >> well, i have to tell you, i have tried in every way i know how, literally from my year as a young lawyer, all the way through my time as secretary of state leveling with the people. >> have you always told the truth. >> i've always tried to. always. always. >> some people are going to call that wiggle room you just gave yourself, always? i mean, jimmy carter said i will never lie to you. >> you're asking me to say have i ever, i don't believe i ever have. i don't believe i ever have. i don't believe i ever will.
3:16 pm
i'm going to do the best i can to level with the american people. >> so that answer set off alarm bells across the political spectrum. now, compare that answer of hillary clinton to what bernie sanders told us when we asked him a comparable question earlier this week. >> i'm wondering whether you think it's appropriate for a president to lie to the american people. >> well, i should hope not. i mean, i think, you know, in terms of the relationship of government to the people, which we are losing everyday, is a level of trust. so i would hope that the president of the united states tells the truth to the american people. >> so john, while those answers to share around the media establishment. >> and brooklyn and burlington. >> what for hillary clinton is meeting expectations and beating? >> we could have a long discussion about whether
3:17 pm
expectations are fair in this instance, but i will tell you no the what they should be, but what they are. >> what they are is meeting expectations is to win the nevada caucuses where she has been, she won in 2008, she had people in the state long before bernie sanders, where she said in toto. >> long time would be part of a fire wall. >> yes, and has a robust hispanic population which she claims is part of her fire wall. she has to win to meet expectations. beating, i think she has to win by more than last time. she beat obama by six points. >> i agree. i don't think it's fair, but this is a state that's supposed to be hers. if she does not win, it's, i've said this all week, really bad for her. we don't know how bad. same as iowa and new hampshire. i said if she came out and sanders had momentum, but nobody could tell you how bad. a loss is pretty bad. i'm not sure what it does in south carolina, but it does allow him to raise money and a
3:18 pm
good talking point all week setting up for march 1st, more than setting up for south carolina. >> david said to me yesterday, he said look, this is where we were in 2008. we had lost new hampshire, we had lost in nevada. south carolina became a must win for barack obama. it will be like that for hillary clinton, and she'll come in here with strength in any case. same question, for bernie sanders, it should just be a mirror imagine thing. what constitutes meeting and exceeding. >> it's a tie. maybe what happens, again, in 2008 where one of them wins the popular vote or if he is in two points within the popular vote, that will be good enough. a virtual tie was good enough. beating is winning. i will say. >> by one vote. >> i will say that i believe he is more likely to win than not. that's my sense right now. >> my sense too. >> and therefore, because that has been a creeping perception
3:19 pm
all week, a win will be beating expectations but not meeting them by so much. he is not going to get as big a buff if it doesn't come out of the blue. >> 24 hours, clark county democrats dinner, bernie sanders, bill clinton. chanting in the room for bernie sanders. chanting, screaming, howling. bill clinton, nice reception, but not like that. the black caucus endorsed bernie sanders, and up in reno, elko, i feel he should be the favorite. if you were a vegas betting man, you would say bernie sanders is the favorite. >> i would predict the entrance poll shows the economy feels he would be better. >> agree. >> when we come back, how is marco rubio doing in south carolina. one of his biggest backers here in the state. gowdy joins us after these words
