carolina has gone on to the nomination. in either party. gop turnout in south carolina was historic. up by 134,000 from 2012 and nearly 300,000 from 2008. trump won with 33% of the vote. followed by a tight race for second between narco rubio and ted cruz at 23% and 22% of the vote, a virtual tie. separated by less than 1100 votes. >> let's stop right there. big news, john obviously with jeb bush we'll get to in a second. but the participation in iowa. the participation in new hampshire. the participation here. just off the charts. >> it is. >> so if the question is, is donald trump going to bring more people in to vote? the answer through the first three contests appear to be yes. >> well, i don't know. i wouldn't quite go that far. in the sense that you've got a really big field that a lot of interest in this race in general. so how much of that you attribute just to trump versus

how much you attribute it to a very competitive republican field, again, trump is obviously a huge part of that. look the party is also incredibly, incredibly engaged in this election. because after two consecutive terms of barack obama a lot of republicans are desperate to win the white house. and so, some combination of big field, that enthusiasm, that desperation has created a moment for the republican party, no matter what happens, whoever ultimately gets the nomination, the party should feel good about the fact that its electorate is jazzed. >> willie geist -- >> we'll talk more about that. >> and donald up there is going to be on in 10 or 15 mints or so. willie, by any traditional standard this past week has been disastrous for donald trump. he had what most republicans thought was a meltdown last saturday night in the debate. he insulted the last republican president by saying he lied about wmds.

i could go through the entire week. but he even got into a fight, a brawl, with the pope. and he won by over ten points. >> you could put out a laundry list that would take the whole show of mistakes, alleged mistakes he made over the past week. >> misdeeds. >> he talked about planned parenthood in relatively glowing terms during that debate. except for the abortions they do great stuff. he basically blamed bush for 9/11. he blamed bush for the iraq war. on and on. things you don't say in republican primaries and win in the state of south carolina. well he did last night. it's not just the general turnout number it's the makeup of those voters. 75% of them said they were evangelicals. donald trump, we've talked about who he is, and yes, he's presbyterian and all those things, but i don't think anyone would mistake him for an evangelical candidate winning in this state by ten points, three quarters of those voters evangelical. >> i'm going to turn ricky bobby on its head. said if you don't whip, you lose. >> talledega.

>> i said yesterday one of five candidates. basically everybody but kasich, could either win big or lose. rudy giuliani, we had him on earlier, we asked him what it was about donald trump that made him different. he said everybody that goes in and negotiates they want something for them and want something for everybody else. donald trump wants to go into a room and lead where he's the winner and everybody else is the loser. except for john kasich yesterday, that seems to be exactly what happened. marco rubio had every endorsement you could have. >> right. >> they were bragging all day yesterday along with the chamber that rubio was going to finish a very strong second. ted cruz, this should have been his state. >> yeah. >> request all the evangelicals. he was beaten by donald trump. among evangelicals. 50% of the population that voted, very conservative. 75% were evangelicals. a higher share of evangelicals in south carolina than iowa voted.

everybody lost yesterday except donald trump and maybe john kasich, right? >> i would agree with that. and the interesting thing, when you look at the map from last night, it just -- it's blood red. i mean he has every county. every area of the map covered in a state like you said where ted cruz is supposed to play hard and effective. marco rubio had the establishment endorsements behind him. he had his tail wind kind of pushing him along and donald trump just stayed his course. he started the week getting beat up by the president. he ended the week going toe-to-toe with the pope and yet he comes out on top. and the reason for that is despite everything else, you made the point, donald trump goes in the room, and people know he goes in that room and he comes out he's going to come out fighting for them. and they still don't get that sense from all these other players. >> that's how 245i feel. >> and that's an important connection. by the time you get to march 15th. i did the math last night. you're talking about 1100 of the delegates, half the delegates will be selected by march 15th. when we then go to winner take all. donald trump could have out of

that 1100, 800 of those delegates. >> okay. >> at some point this party is going to have to recognize this guy is on his way to the nomination. >> i want to show these exit polls to all of you, including mark halperin who is standing by. we'll get to him. but for a look inside this south carolina victory, the nbc news exit polls show white evangelicals made up their biggest share of the electorate in years. 67% compared to 64% in 2012. and 55% in 2008. and they had a larger share in south carolina than in any other early state. with 62% of the vote in iowa. and 23% of the vote in new hampshire. among them, trump won white evangelicals 34% to cruz's 26% with rubio taking 21%. >> that's absolutely stunning. and again, i just got to stop right there. willie, remember all the people that have said, you know, we've been making this joke since august. donald trump, this is the end for donald trump. this is the end. just go back over the past week.

since the debate, since he said that vulgarity in new hampshire, all the people who said, the same thing that we've been making fun of them saying for the past six, seven -- not because we're voting for donald trump. i'll be honest the guy i was going to vote for, he got out last night. but, because they're always wrong about him and they were wrong again. >> i think the question you have to ask now, and this goes off what michael just said about the numbers is, going back it was how can donald trump win the nomination? how can this possibly be? there was enthusiasm for him. people said but once they get in the booths they're not actually going to pull the lever for him. i think the question now is how can't he win? what will happen between now and march 15th, and beyond, that prevents him from getting the nomination? i talked to a very smart friend of ours, republican we all know, who said at this point, it's a convention fight or nothing. >> yeah. >> and again, what we've been saying, when people come on our set over the past six, seven, eight months, is they've been

saying oh, you're saying donald trump could win it. all we're saying is show us the data that suggests he can't. not that he will. but that suggests he can't. >> yeah. >> and for some reason that has enraged a lot of people in the media. we're just asking for data. and right now, there is none suggesting he cannot win this nomination. >> so on what issues, the south carolinians who voted yesterday believe are most important to the country. 32% said terrorism. 29% said the economy. 26% said government spending. and 10% said immigration. and strong's strongest performance came among voters who were looking for a candidate who tells it like it is, taking 78% of that group and trump dominated from voters who said they wanted the next president to come from outside the political establishment. that is 63%. >> so mark halperin, as always, we start getting exit polls around 4:00 in the afternoon, 5:00 in the afternoon. when i saw the makeup, which of

course did it said it was 74% evangelical. this has the number a little bit lower, 67%. when i started seeing that almost half the voters were very conservative, and now saying 67% evangelicals, i actually thought that cruz, or rubio, were going to be very close and possibly beat donald trump. i'm pretty blown away that, as michael steele said, anybody that knows the state of south carolina knows it's three states. and when i started seeing trump winning greenville, spartanburg, i just sat there going, oh, my god. everything we have ever known about republican politics has just been turned on its head by a guy who supported hillary clinton eight years ago. >> with all due respect to what all y'all have said so far i think you've understated both trump's achievements to date and his commanding position right now. it's a crazy cycle. something could change but trump

has now proven he's anything but a regional candidate. he couldn't find electorates more different within the republican context than new hampshire and south carolina. you look not just at the exit poll but at the upcoming math. the fact that you still have three other candidates who think they're the ones who can stop trump. trump, i think, at this point would probably win every state on super tuesday. not just accumulating delegates but more momentum. none of the candidates, even cruz, have the ability to spend money to try to match trump's command of the media and slow down his momentum. and, there are two kinds of people in the republican party right now at the elite level. there are those who say we can't stop trump, unless we find something new and different. we have to do something different. we need to get someone else in the race. we need a convention strategy. we need a super pac to go after him. and there are those who are still in denial who think somehow just letting this four person race go forward will somehow stop trump's inexorable march to the nomination. >> john heilemann, what those who think that they can stop trump now don't understand,

their best chance to stop trump were in these early states. now, as i said yesterday, this is a campaign, the pace quickens, and it's all about airport hangars, it's all about arena speeches, it's all about 30-second ads. nobody can come close. we are now going in to donald trump's strength. >> and here's the key thing that mark said just now which is that the field is still so fragmented. you know, in a world where we were waking up today, and there was one candidate, against donald trump, you could theoretically say, hey, trump's gotten in the mid 30s so far in these states. you look at iowa, you look at new hampshire. he's in the mid 30s. he's not over 40. he's not over 50. in theory. in theory a single one-on-one match-up with trump, maybe john kasich could beat him. maybe marco rubio could beat him. maybe ted cruz could beat him one-on-one. but four-on-one, three-on-one because ben carson is still in the race, so four-on-one against donald trump there's no way to beat donald trump in a

four-on-one race and the point about the calendar, as long as there's all those alternatives still in the race through march 1st, and maybe all the way to march 15th, you've got a fragmented anti-trump vote and trump at 35% or 40% wins everything. that's the daunting part of this. >> and also, kind of daunting is are these next facts. 150 million dollars. and three states later, jeb bush ending his run in the republican presidential primary. despite a giant operation. a powerful super pac. and a campaign helped from two former presidents and two former first ladies all sharing the same last name, the former florida governor suspended his campaign after coming in fourth last night. his campaign and allies spent $81 million on tv ads but he never fully gained traction. after he declared for president he briefly led in the polls. he says he wasn't worried but his polling average never reached above 18% in the early states.

according to real clear politics he peaked over the summer before the rise of donald trump. here is jeb bush addressing supporters last night. >> but the people of iowa and new hampshire and south carolina have spoken. and i really respect their decision. so tonight, i am suspending my campaign. >> no. >> yeah, yeah. we put forward detailed, innovative, conservative plans to address the mounting challenges that we face. because, despite what you might have heard, ideas matter, policy matters. >> that was hard to watch. >> yeah. >> we were all in this -- some of us were watching it together. it was -- >> you looked stricken. >> it's hard to watch a guy's

political career end. stepping off the stage for the last time in politics, anyway. >> yes. >> a good man, an incredibly smart man. a man who knows the issues better than most people i would argue in this race. but at the wrong time. this is donald trump's time. donald trump came in and very early on punched jeb bush, punched him hard. jeb didn't think initially he had to punch back. by the time he realized it, i think it was too late. >> even more so than the punch was the definition. he defined jeb bush out of the gate and jeb was thrown back on his heels and his campaign, the interesting thing, they thought they could spin their way to a solution with donald trump. and this was not a money campaign. this was really something visceral for the voters and he never connected to it. >> i've never seen a candidate defined in a way that donald trump defined jeb bush repeatedly by calling him a low energy candidate, and there's so many things to untangle here. i mean, go back nine months, and tell people that on the same day

that jeb bush would get out of the race when all the smart money said jeb was the next nominee. you're saying that donald trump is going to become, move strongly into first place. it's shocking. but also you look at those numbers we're in a new era now where a 20 second instagram posting can undercut $100 million of television ads. >> wow. >> i'll just say one other thing which is true, i think trump did a lot to define jeb bush. but mark and i went around the country last year and did focus groups in iowa and new hampshire, every couple months republicans, probably talked to 150 republicans over the course of the year. we couldn't find a republican who was interested in jeb bush. even before donald trump got in the race. the bush brand for one reason or another, either people thought he wasn't conservative enough, thought he couldn't win a general election. the republican party did not want a guy named bush as its nominee. from day one. >> in the end, mika, barbara

cleaning up with conservatives, evangelicals, are even you surprised by the margin last night? >> well, i'm a little surprised because i was hit really hard by commercials. you know, they spent $25 million at least of negative commercials on me. much of it untrue. not all of it. but much of it. and i will say that i am surprised that i got the kind of numbers i got because i won, i don't know if you know, i won every congressional district. there are seven, and i won all seven. therefore i got every delegate. every single delegate, which is sort of unheard of. so i'm a little surprised, because the negative commercials were brutal. and they were massive. i mean, you couldn't turn on the television. i was there for a week. you couldn't turn on the television without seeing a negative commercial, and the other thing is, ted cruz yesterday, and you know, look, he's got to do what he's got to do but he took two robo calls and they were brutal the morning of the election and the afternoon. one went on at 9:00 in the morning and i heard about it. that had to do with the confederate flag. and which i had nothing to do with. and the other one was on gay

rights. and that went on at 12:00. and i was hit by both of these things, and people were calling, and actually marco rubio said it was really unfair. so, and had nothing to do with him. he said it was really, really unfair the robo calls. so i didn't know. i just didn't know. and to win by such a big margin was amazing. you know, bigger than the polls. we've done that now twice. new hampshire was bigger than the polls. and frankly, iowa would have been, except, you know, a lot of things happened in iowa. that -- >> well, donald, depending on when you turned on the tv last night you would have thought marco rubio won. or ted cruz won, because they did victory speeches. if you hadn't turned the tv on during your speech, donald, you would have thought cruz or rubio won. >> yeah. well, they had a close race but they were, you know, very far behind. and like i said, i won every single delegate, every single congressional district, which is a record. it's a record. you know, things like that don't happen. so i was very happy. and they were very nice.

jeb was brutal toward me. but he really fought hard. my son eric knows his son and eric tells me his son is a star. he's phenomenal. so you know, that means a lot when eric says that. they're friends. they're very good friends. you know, i like the family. what can i tell you? >> all right. so let me ask you this, a couple days ago, i said it was ironic that -- said it was ironic that the same pope who had said who am i to judge, judged you as a christian. and i hope i got this tweet right, i thought it was ironic after you said nobody should judge a man's faith, that you put up a tweet suggesting that barack obama would have attended scalia's funeral if it were held in a mosque, thereby, i think questioning barack obama's faith. >> i didn't say he would. i did that in fun asking as a question mark. because i think the president should have been at scalia's funeral. and i think it's inappropriate that he wasn't.

i take him at his word, that's fine. >> donald i want to ask you about your -- about your -- about your convoy with the pope this week and i'm curious as to whether before you went out there at that press conference after the pope said what he said that you took to obviously be about you later the vatican said it was not directed at you we don't know what the pope's actual intentions were, did you have any hesitance about going after the pope and do you think that it helped you or hurt you at all in south carolina? >> well, i don't know the answer to the last part. i couldn't hurt very badly because i got a number even above the polling numbers. the number 33 or 33 was awfully good. i don't think it hurt me. what i thought were going to hurt me was the robo calls. those were brutal. the morning of the election. they were brutal. the two of them. they just didn't stop. and they were put out by ted. so that was pretty tough stuff i thought. so i thought that would hurt me. i didn't think the pope -- at first when i first heard it the pope just came out and said things about you, mr. trump, and i said good or bad? and they said, bad.

i said, that's not good. this is not good. and then i thought about it, and i said, this has to do with mexico, and illegal immigration, and the pope was not well versed as to the crime and all the things happening with illegal immigration and the border, and we came out i think with a very good statement. i will say the following day, you know, the pope issued a statement that really was very nice. but i don't know -- i don't think it helped me or hurt me. i think it's a neutral. i was very honored that he was talking about me. because i've never seen a pope talking about anybody before. >> no, no, i've never seen a pope get involved -- >> we've never seen a lot of things, donald. >> -- in a south carolina primary before. i've got to ask you, are you surprised -- >> they usually talk about more important things than donald trump. >> so let me ask you -- >> they're usually talking about much more important things. >> all right, let me ask you, are you -- just tell us the truth, are you surprised? you had nikki haley come out, very popular governor, coming out against you.

you had the entire republican establishment coming out after you. the republican establishment in washington, d.c. is coming after you. the entire republican establishment is in shambles this morning. not only in south carolina, but also in washington, d.c. are you surprised as you stop and look at where you are right now? is there any way you could have imagined you would have been here nooin months ago? >> so, new hampshire was amazing. iowa was amazing, frankly. you know, it's sort of, you and i sort of laugh because the person who came in third was like a superstar. the person who came in second, although i think i actually came in piers but we won't discuss that, but the person who came in second was like, you know, what happened. but i did very well. i got the largest number of votes ever except for the one person. then, i go to new hampshire, we set records up there. records in every way. that was so incredible. and then yesterday, was amazing. those people are amazing. and i think if i say i'm surprised, it would only be by the amount. you know, i expect to win.

and it wasn't two club championships, it was many club championships. because you said two last week. but i expect to win -- >> oh, my god. we're so sorry. >> no, no. i said many club championships, not two. but that's okay. but joe, i think i'm more surprised by the magnitude. for instance, we won every congressional district yesterday in south carolina. every single one. seven of them. it's never happened. and we won every single delegate. we won all of them. and usually you know you can win, you get 25 if you win and so many for each congressional district. i got all of them. so i think if you said am i surprised? i'm not surprised to be winning. maybe i'm surprised that i'm winning by so much, such a big margin. >> all right. donald trump, thank you so much for being with us. >> congratulations on your big win last night. >> thank you very much. >> i appreciate it. >> so, willie, pick that apart for us. >> the club championships? >> which, by the way, he's prouder of the club

president wasn't born in the united states and he's appealing to those people. he says there's a joke. i don't think there's anything particularly funny about the tweet. i don't think it's meant in humor. i think he's keeping that -- he came to prominence in the world by running as a birther. talking about that stuff back in 2012. he wants to keep that alive. and i think that tweet is part of a strategy that appeals to a certain part of the republican base that continues to question the president's place of origin, and his faith. >> we're talking about this more coming up. but still to come here in college football they call it separation saturday. on the democratic side, did hillary clinton just put bernie sanders behind her? or is this still just the beginning of a prolonged fight? a really, big win for hillary clinton yesterday. >> yep. >> we'll talk about that when we return.

welcome back to "morning joe." willie, so, the networks were suckered, we were suckered this morning, by that tweet, and that's a microcosm of the entire campaign. donald trump does many things that warrant criticism. but then the media overreaches, and talking about this from the beginning of the campaign. overreaches, they condemn him last night. he's a classless act. find out he didn't do that. and the overreach ends up helping donald trump. >> i have to say, it wasn't that hard to find out that it wasn't a real tweet. i heard that reported on the air, and i thought even by donald standards that seems a little strange to me that he said he got out, jeb bush lost his energy. looked at his account, and it wasn't him. it was one of the many donald trump parody accounts. but it caught fire and took on a life of its own across many networks. >> wow. still to come this morning, a

is ahead of senator sanders 53% to 47%. as for the delegates awarded out of that state, the current count is clinton 22, sanders 16. with us now from columbia, south carolina, political reporter for "the washington post" and msnbc political analyst bob costa. here on set attorney and republican strat jing ben ginsburg. he served as national council for mitt romney's presidential bids and the bush/cheney presidential campaigns. and in new york the man whose time slot we were borrowing this morning the host of msnbc's politics nation and the president of the national action network reverend al sharp. . reverend we'll start with you. first of all hillary clinton really needed this win and she got it. >> no, she definitely needed it. and it was a win that no one saw her coming out with six points ahead. clearly after having touch a devastating defeat in new hampshire, had she lost nevada

yesterday, even though she's way ahead in the polls in south carolina, she would have been seriously damaged. so she needed the win and i think she won by a larger gap than anyone saw coming. i think that the interesting challenge here, though, mika and joe is that she not only won, but she's caught in the exit polls she won three quarters of the black vote, and the black vote is what going to be very key in south carolina. and i think not only does senator sanders have a challenge now in terms of what he does in south carolina and on super tuesday, he now has a challenge of, can he really win in a diverse kind of electorate? and that in nevada took a hit on the -- according to the caucus results in nevada yesterday. >> you know mark halperin just like you said you can't overstate the importance of trump's win and the strength of donald trump in south carolina

yesterday. you also can't overstate the importance of hillary clinton's win, and while we're talking about the two states, i have learned through the years of endorsements, usually just don't matter. nikki haley, her endorsement just didn't matter. marco rubio underperformed. but if she were the -- if she was the loser yesterday in the surrogates war, harry reid in nevada, once again, showed if you want to win a close race in a state, there is no better friend to have than american politics today than harry reid, working the unions in nevada. >> behind the scenes and of course not with an official endorsement. the best moment of hillary clinton's campaign in a long time was that cnn poll showing the race tied. because, the expectations got totally changed. the sanders campaign did not tamp down the notion that they might win the caucuses. and her win was relatively narrow. if you think about it, sanders says how far behind he was. where that race was. but instead, it could end up being decisive. i don't think sanders has a

chance now to compete effectively in south carolina. i don't think his team does, either. and going into those super tuesday states could he pick off some? sure. but on the current trajectory, given her support from superdelegates, given what the calendar sets up, given the fact that she's now regained the momentum in full, hillary clinton is in some ways in as commanding a position right now as donald trump is. >> bob costa, let's go to the republican side. you wrote the lead for "the washington post" this morning. talk about the scope of donald trump's win yesterday. >> the scope of trump's win really extended across south carolina. you see him winning key demographics for its rivals. he's doing well with evangelicals, well with suburban voters. he could still probably do better with young voters and women. across the board the republican party, at least a strong 30% to 40% of them in different groups seem to be moving toward trump. talking to rival campaigns last night, joe and mika, i got the sense that they're target now as they head into nevada and go

into super tuesday on march 1st, is the suburban districts outside of little rock and arkansas, near memphis and chattanooga and tennessee, the districts outside of atlanta. this is now a battle to pick up delegates. not to entirely counter trump across the board but to try to get back through individual congressional districts. >> the problem with that, of course, mr. ginsburg, is that the republican party in its infinite wisdom to help jeb bush become the nominee front loaded everything, so after the 15th it's winner take all. and who wins, because of that? >> well, donald trump's looking awfully strong in the march 15th states that start winner take all. >> he's also looking really strong on super tuesday, isn't he? he's ahead in every one of those -- >> he is. but that's where the rubio and the cruz campaigns have said they've done really good microtargeting to go in to specific -- >> do you believe them -- >> i believe more with the cruz and the rubio campaign. i think they have the diagnostics to do it. but not necessarily the boots on the ground.

so we've been talking this morning about hillary clinton's big win in nevada. helped, perhaps, yesterday by the campaign releasing a new video that features will

>> it's unbelievable. and ted cruz talking like he was winning. everybody's a winner. >> this is a millennial generation. >> we're live at the market -- >> there are no winners or losers. we're giving out participation trophies. >> well, we are. did everybody win last night? no, yes, yes. yes? ah. mostly most. >> see? i didn't even look back there. it had to be a millennial. >> it was a millennial. oh, my god! >> how many football teams do you have right now? tell me, do you have the head phones for the xbox just like me? donald trump won big in yesterday's south carolina primary. but, mika, don't tell that to ted cruz and marco rubio. >> no, because they won, too. it's okay. from the sound of their speeches the two senators locked in a virtual second place seem to be taking a victory lap, too. even though they were far behind donald trump. trump's victory here is potentially a pivotal one, as every candidate who has won in both new hampshire and south carolina has gone on to the

nomination. in either party. gop turnout in south carolina was historic, up by 134,000 from 2012, and nearly 300,000 from 2008. trump won with 33% of the vote, followed by a tight race for second, between marco rubio and ted cruz, at 23% and 22% of the vote. separated by 1100 votes, far behind donald trump. jeb bush, john kasich finished far behind at 8% each with ben carson pulling in 7%. jeb bush then suspending his campaign after his disappointing distant fourth place finish. so trump's statewide victory and each of the state's congressional districts won him all 50 available delegates. give us historic caliper specificive. has this ever -- did mccain do this? has romney done this? has anybody done what donald trump did last night in a

competitive race? >> when george w. bush won in 2000, when john mccain won in 20 2008, they did not sweep the state the way donald trump did last night. all seven congressional districts, it's very different state. it's a true win. >> it's three states. and mark halperin, talk about -- you said something interesting last hour, we were all saying what a huge win this was for donald trump. you said we actually were understating it. and ben and i were talking about as you move forward to super tuesday and all the different states that are involved there, all you have to do is look at south carolina. it's a microcosm of a lot of those states. it is three states. low country. and then of course the columbia area, and then you go upstate. i mean when trump's winning the lowcountry, and greenville, sportenburg. that's just pretty unprecedented. >> and you couple it with his win in new hampshire, which was

also very impressive. you look at his demographic and issue nom nance and look at the three guys now trying to stop him. you know, people are talking about cruz winning texas or rubio winning florida, or virginia. right now trump has the momentum. and he's got a divided field and he's dealing with people who don't have the resources to stop him. i think the key to the race now, if there is a scenario of stopping trump, willie mentions stopping up the convention. i think that's increasingly difficult when he's headed now on this truong eblgtry of the majority of delegates, can any of these guys stop trump? not with paid media, but can they stop him by taking him on in the media? can they frame him? all three of those guys will have a chance to do it but trump showed us again this morning it's going to be hard to do. >> what can donald trump say in a -- in a debate, john heilemann, that he did not say last saturday night? i was certain that if there was any moment that could beat donald trump it was the debate

last weekend. and he roars to another huge victory. >> look, you know, we've said this on the show a million times now, it just -- there's dozens of examples over the course from the time he started running to now where you thought, you know, and ordinary candidate would be destroyed by the things he's just said, that this week you started the week with the last saturday night with the debate in greenville where you said he basically said that george w. bush was responsible in some way for 9/11. >> he lied about wmds. >> he lied about weapons of mass destruction, et cetera. >> planned parenthood. >> he ended the week by attacking the pope or defending himself against the pope. that was the week for donald trump. >> just another week. >> attack pope francis, and yet in the end all that bounced off him or maybe even strengthened him, who knows, it's not possible to imagine, i don't think, unless you had some incredibly good hallucinogenic drug what the situation would be that would cause trump to have a moment in the debate that would

actually cause him to crumble. i can't imagine what it is. i'm not saying it's not there. it could exist. but none of us, with all of our imaginations, are able to conjure it at this point. >> so willie and i talked to somebody that worked at a very big company in state. he said every single one of my hourly workers, republican and democrat alike, are all voting for trump. he said every one of them. he said, i go around ask, who you for? who you for? every one. that's working-class, working middle class, they're all for trump. >> and he's shown that in the numbers. advantageles last night, hard core conservatives. i think most kvs don't think donald trump is the most conference guy they've ever met given his record. most evangelicals probably don't think he's the most evangelical guy they ever met but here he is winning all 50 delegates in south carolina. we've got the former head of the party michael steen, a man who's run successful presidential campaigns, so play defensive coordinator right now. and i don't mean this as a rhetorical question, this is a serious question.

how do you stop donald trump right now? what's the scenario by which he does not become the nominee given what happened last night? >> well, from a political standpoint, as an opposing campaign, you -- i don't know. i mean, i am just being honest, i just don't see the math. i don't see the mechanisms that any of these other campaigns have right now to stop him. simply because to john's point rhetorically there's nothing you can do to stop him. he says it himself. so it's not like you have to say it about him. he's saying these things himself, it's not hurting him. politically you have no juice with the base that's gravitating towards him. you're not peeling votes off of him. this idea, this notion that these other candidates, if they consolidate behind one, that all of that support, that 60-some percent or 50% is just going to automatically go to that one candidate, it's crazy. donald trump's going to grab some of that. donald trump is somebody's second choice, too.

so that's the reality right now for the political establishment to deal with. this man is on a trajectory that is very tough to pull him off of. >> well, the adrenaline is running hard through the veins of the cruz and rubio campaigns this morning. even if they're getting the participation trophies. so what they're thinking is, i know what my diagnostics, i know what my microtargeting tells me where i have support. and it's not a statewide campaign. and it's going to get really granular in terms of old-fashioned door knocking and phones and mail, and you're going for your support that you've already identified. and you're hoping, because the next two weeks are proportional, that donald trump doesn't get over 50% of the delegates. >> yeah. >> so that in the long run you've got your three lanes and nobody comes to a convention with a majority. >> that's the convention -- it seems increasing that the convention scenario is the only scenario. >> bob costa when you look at what he did in this state, and

how sweeping his victory was, and exactly who voted for him, large swaths of evangelicals, and how does he lose this in other states that have similar demographics? >> well, mika, when i went around to polling places here in south carolina, and just anecdotally based on my reporting, the one thing i was struck by in terms of the trump voters, this was not a hard core tea party activist, not a conference hard liner. there were a lot of white collar and blue collar let's say middle class, somewhat conservative voters, voters who have been disengaged from politics for maybe five years, a decade or more, and they're being brought in to this process because of trump, because of the way he has dominated the national race, and their desire to see an outsider in washington, and you're seeing that play across all of these states now as we head into march 1st. the somewhat engaged, maybe not totally ideological voter, that's trump's base and those are now voters coming into the process which complicate it for cruz as he tries to consolidate

conservatives and rubio tries to get those main stream establishment suburb republicans behind him. >> so, mika, let's turn to the democratic side. and we've been talking an awful lot about donald trump this morning. obviously because that's what happened last. >> yes. >> that's what happened last night. it also is far more exciting, there were more tells and whistles and explosions going on on the republican side. maybe nevada and the caucus was a bit more mundane, but i think when you look back, i think people are going to be looking at hillary's win last night in nevada, every bit as much as looking at donald trump's win last night in south carolina. as a significant turning point. i don't want to overstate it, but had bernie sanders won last night this would have been a massive fight going all the way to the convention. last night, i don't think you can overstate how big this win for hillary clinton was. >> this was the turning point she needed. hands down. i'm not sure exactly what the path would be for bernie sanders

now. but hillary clinton needed this win desperately. she got it handily. it wasn't that close, with 96% of nevada's precincts now reporting, secretary clinton is ahead of senator sanders 53% to 47%. as for the delegates awarded out of that state, the current count is clinton 22, sanders 16. we've got both angles of this race covered for you this morning. nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker is in las vegas up early for us this morning covering the clinton campaign. and msnbc political correspondent kasie hunt is already in columbia, south carolina, covering the bernie sanders campaign here in south carolina. kristen we'll start with you. what are you hearing from inside the clinton campaign this morning? probably a massive sigh of relief. >> that's exactly right. this is a huge sigh of relief. one top aide saying that last night was easily the best day of the campaign. for all of the reasons that you were talking about.

it restored the momentum that second clip had lost in new hampshire. and it makes it really difficult to see how senator sanders is competitive in some of these larger, more diverse states. it quieted her critics. and her strategy for winning, i think, was multipronged. she had that very robust, organizing effort here. they were here on the ground six months prior to senator sanders. she had robby mooc her campaign manager who helped her win this state back in 2008. remember back then she lost the delegate count. this time they focused on the more rural delegate rich areas. we also saw secretary clinton tweaking her message after that big loss in new hampshire started focusing more on things like breaking down barriers. taking on wall street. the messages that have really been resonating with senator sanders supporters, and we saw her aggressively reach out to african-americans, making a number of stops this past week in chicago, for example, talking about how she would reform the criminal justice system.

and then there's the harry reid factor here. he has not endorsed any candidate yet, but he strongly encouraged union workers, the culinary workers union, to get out and caucus yesterday. and that was what helped her to run up the numbers. and i can't understore this point enough she won significantly among african-americans, 76% to 22%. so when you look forward that helps her in places like south carolina, the southern states, and the super tuesday states, it really complicates things for senator sanders. mika, joe, back to you. >> all right. kristen welker, thank you very much. let's turn now to kasie hunt. let's turn to you the sanders campaign reacting this morning. how are they feeling? >> well, this was a pretty fundamental shift in the race for them, right? and on the plane out here to south carolina, last night you could sense that that mood had really changed. the question now, whether they still are the kind of campaign that's posing a legitimate challenge to second clinton for the nomination, or if they've

gone back to kind of what this started as, the sense that this was a movement, who was going to go out there and talk about these issues. try to make them a part of the conversation. there was a lot of discussion of well, okay, hillary clinton has changed her stump speech. seems like we have accomplished some of what we set out to do here. but i think a couple things over the last couple of days have underscored the challenges for the sanders campaign because of the way their candidate is as a person, there seems to be an unwillingness to go for the jugular for the clinton campaign here. we reached this phase where the clinton hammer was starting to come down on bernie sanders. and the question is, okay, are they going to engage in those negative attacks? there's plenty to use there against hillary clinton, even against bill clinton, and there's just an unwillingness on ernie sanders part to go there. he just doesn't seem comfortable with it. and i think that's changing the trajectory in nevada. i think the other thing, too, is this increasing scrutiny he's come under at the presidential level. he doesn't like taking questions

about things like killer mike for example. he has no tolerance for that the way that the national media handles this in many ways and i think it was a little bit of a difficult transition to step in to that presidential spotlight. >> all right. kasie hunt, thank you so much. >> thank you. >> greatly appreciate it. willie, so let's just be clear for people that don't follow the mundaneness of these campaigns, like we do. donald trump's win last night, very significant. and we're going to be turning the corner to a lot of winner take all states. >> yep. >> so trump can race to victory. even though last night was a big win for hillary clinton, the democrats don't have winner take all states like republicans. this will most likely be a war of attrition for quite some time. even though hillary certainly -- >> much stronger -- >> has a big advantage. >> she's got the upper hand. bernie sanders can go back to his donors. he's got resources to stay in this race for a long time. tales of his demise are

exaggerated. >> john heilemann is shaking his head. >> i just think the problem is if she had won in nevada, they would have come to south carolina, he would have had the wind genuinely at his back, although he claimed it last night he does. he doesn't. he would have won new hampshire, nevada, they would have tied in iowa. he would have come to have a war here in south carolina this week. he's basically not going to contest this state. she's going to blow him out. he's going to try to pick off friendly states on march 1st. he's going to be here a couple times next week. she's going to win another huge victory four days before march 1st. where there are a lot of states that look like south carolina where she's going to be able to rack up big delegate totals in a lot of those states. she's now on not a certain path but a glad path to come out of march 1st with enough of a lead in delegates that because of the fact that the democratic primary is proportional that he will probably never be able to make up. again, things can change. some seismic event could happen but she could walk out if she has a loyal has big delegate

leads in a bunch of the biggest states like texas and georgia she could have a lead that is unchangeable. >> she could find herself in the position barack obama did in 2008. >> right. >> where hillary clinton won ohio, won texas, won pennsylvania, won all these massive states and at the end of the day it just didn't matter. >> that's what i meant. she's obviously had the upper hand but he can stay in this. >> for a long time and continue to fight. but that was a game changing election last night for hillary clinton. >> reverend al still with us in new york. another thing that jumps out at me as we look at some of the numbers, the african-american vote there was not good for bernie sanders. very good for hillary clinton in the state of nevada. her numbers huge in south carolina on those margins. also another point, bernie sanders the turnout numbers have not been huge. if you're going to have a political revolution it's sort of contingent on lots of new people coming out to vote and those numbers were not good in nevada for him. >> see i think those are two very critical points.

bernie sanders' alcohol keng was to prove that he could win in a diverse electorate. and nevada was the first indication of that. it didn't happen. and turning out a lot of the young, enthusiasm in translating that into votes, and caucuses, it didn't happen last night as he was able to do in new hampshire. he has an uphill battle doing that in south carolina and he's not concentrating there. it gives her a momentum. and i think that's very, very critical at this junction your. he needed to prove in nevada that he could do turnout and that he could get latino and black votes. and i think that that is why is so important. i must also say i know we're talking on the democratic side but i must say i ran in 2004. i know south carolina well, i have chapters of the action network there it's amazing what donald trump did because i know the different parts of that

state. and i don't give a lot of compliments to donald trump but maybe because it's sunday morning i'm a preacher i'm feeling benevolent that i have to give him a lot of credit on that. and i give him credit for not falling in to the attack on the president's religion. i thought that was the right thing for him to do. >> that's a moment. >> amazing grace, reverend al. how sweet the sound. on a sunday morning. i agree with you. i was -- i was glad to hear donald trump say unequivocally, yes, the president's a christian. now that's a very easy question to answer but scott walker and a lot of other republicans in 2015, and even into 2016 -- >> even hillary clinton during the election on i believe 60 minutes. >> hillary clinton eight years ago couldn't answer that question unequivocally. >> he says he is. >> i'm with you. >> i think what is going to

mitchell's report. the people of iowa and new hampshire and south carolina have spoken and i really respect that. so tonight i am suspending my campaign. >> the end of the road for jeb bush came saturday night. a noticeably emotional moment for bush. after his fourth place finish in south carolina. earlier this week, south carolina governor nikki haley's endorsement of marco rubio signaled how the state's primary would play out. >> i'm disappointed she didn't endorse me. >> reporter: in fact you could say the campaign was in trouble before it even started. his mother, famously telling matt lauer in 2013 -- >> there are other people out there that are very qualified and we've had enough bushes. >> reporter: but then bush decided it was his year. >> i'm a candidate for president of the united states of america. >> reporter: until he was upstaged the very next day when donald trump announced his candidacy. which bush didn't consider a serious threat. until it was too late.

president of the united states. and he's one of the most qualified people to be president of the united states of this generation. again it just wasn't his year. i'm stunned by it. i'm stunned by it. known him for a very long time and he's a great man. let's bring in former editor in chief of "time" john huey. how ironic that south carolina, a place rich in history for the bush family, whether you're talking about 1988 or 2000, would be where it all ends. >> well, there's a rich irony in the bush run ending here because it really began here in a lot of ways. south carolina primary was started in 1980, by harry dent and lee atwater. it was their brainchild as a conservative firewall in the republican party, and you would have these primaries that were somebody to the more moderate or

left side of the republican party would get ahead, they'd come to south carolina and have ferocious, vicious, dirty tricks here. i mean, john conley, the vicious with atwater, slime john conley as a supporter of gay rights. the horror. in 1988 -- or no, whenever it was. >> 80. >> he was a supporter of gay rights. even as late as of "w" and mccain. mccain was the father of mixed race children. all this sort of thing. so was this really a really tame south carolina primary. jeb played it as you said straight between the lines. he didn't -- the only real south carolina-like primary moment came, for me, was the tweet you were talking about earlier, when donald trump decided to remind everybody that he was really running against barack obama. >> right. >> and muslims, and 75% of the people in the exit polling agreed with him that muslims should be banned from coming

into america. even though 75% of them didn't vote for him. >> how interesting that you actually had, though, all the robo calls against trump. all the ads against trump. all the traditional ways of attack i attacking not working. you just brought up a tweet. a tweet that takes three seconds. just like you were bringing up instagram. this really, trump -- 69-year-old man has revolutionized the way that people get -- >> using social media. >> -- get their messages out this year. it's shocking. i want to talk about something else -- >> and he does it himself. >> he does it himself. so the big loser, though, it's very interesting what you said off camera. who do you think the big loser was yesterday? >> everyone gets a participation trophy. >> of course. everyone won. >> the big loser was ted cruz. i mean, i broke out laughing when he said we've made history here tonight. he didn't make history there last night.

he failed the consolidate the evangelical vote. and south carolina is not a microcosm of the south. it's a microcosm of the republican party in the south. it is -- i mean the metropolitan atlanta just to put into perspective as big as the state of south carolina. metropolitan atlanta is twice as big as the state of mississippi. so the south is not -- >> but you were right, though, south carolina is a microcosm of the republican party. nationwide. >> i think it's hard to argue that the biggest loser of the night wasn't jeb bush since he had to get out -- >> let me -- let me read this quote to you. i want to hear your reaction to this because it goes to something you were just saying about jeb bush and his campaign. it was a politico story this morning going through kind of a postmortem on it. >> yeah. >> and there's obviously a lot of bad feeling now being unleashed towards mike murphy. and there is a quote in this story i was told this is florida house speaker designate richard corcoran, i was told mike murphy was a political magician and now i believe it.

he took the most transformational, courageous conservative governor of the modern era and made him look like a moderate. does that ring true to you? >> no it doesn't. a lot of people are going to try to kick sally bradshaw around. a lot of people are going to try to kick danny diaz around, mike murphy around. i don't know them well enough to defend them. i know jeb. i'll just say i love jeb. he's a great man. and of all the people i've ever campaigned around, including bill clinton, he was the smartest i've ever been around and i think he would have made the best president of anybody that i've been around. that said at the end of the day it's the candidate. he could have had a billion dollars. money doesn't matter this year. donald trump, with one instagram, account can undercut $100 million worth of advertising. that's the message here. just like john kennedy changed politics in 1960 and enraged people like harry truman,

enraged people like ike because this shallow kid who was the daddy's boy with a big head of hair could change politics. donald trump has done that this year. and you know what? yeah, i could have nitpicked and said mike murphy should have spent more money here or there or done this with jeb or that with jeb, at the end of the day people didn't want jeb bush in 2016. this is about eight years of everybody from rush limbaugh to glen mark to mark levin to breitbart to you name it vilifying barack obama. as i said, the defining moment in this campaign was nothing that happened in the united states of america, it's what happened in paris, barack obama's weak reaction to that, as seen by republicans, just meant strength was all that mattered. and there was nothing that jeb bush, i think, could have done because he's jeb bush and he wasn't going to play the way it

this morning a suspect is in custody after a series of random shootings by a single gunman in michigan last night. six people were killed, three more injured from attacks at three different locations in the kalamazoo area. five of the victims, including a 14-year-old girl, were shot at the third location. the parking lot of a cracker barrel restaurant. nbc news correspondent blake mccoy joining us live from kalamazoo, michigan. blake, what's the latest on this? and what can you tell us about the suspect? >> well, the suspect's name is

jason dalton, a 45-year-old male. he has been arrested. authorities say this is a man with a job, and ties to the community, so the million dollar question right now is, why. a shooting spree that has rocked kalamaz kalamazoo, michigan, began here just before 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot of this apartment complex. a mother with her three children gunned down. right now, she is in serious condition. then, shortly after 10:00 p.m., more shots, a father and his 18-year-old son killed at a local car dealership. >> we have somebody just driving around, finding people, and shooting them dead in their tracks. >> the shots continued 15 minutes later, up the road at a cracker barrel restaurant. five people in two separate cars shot. >> 5581 south ninth street, 5581 south nine the street at the cracker barrel. >> four women dead at the scene, a fifth, a 14-year-old girl is said to be in grave condition.

at 12:40 a.m. more than six hours after the first shots rang out, 45-year-old jason brian dalton was taken into custody. police say without incident. overnight, police searching his home and vehicle where they say they found a gun. the victims appeared to have been chosen at random. >> we're very confident that we have the right person in custody. we have significant evidence. police say they were able to track him down so quickly because there was surveillance video at that cracker barrel and the gas station. they were able to identify his vehicle and find him about six hours from the time of the initial shooting. this does appear to be random. authorities say there are no known ties to any of the victims sore the three shooting locations. willie? a bunch of people just going about their nights. blake mccoy in kalamazoo, thank you. we'll be right back here in charleston with part of our interview this morning with donald trump.
