>> i won't let people die on the streets -- let me talk. >> explain away. >> i now you're embarrassed, keep swinging for the fences. >> yeah. things got hot in houston last night where marco rubio and ted cruz got the memo about going after trump but is it too late to stop him? plus another mass shooting in america. this time four people are dead. more than a dozen injured after a single gunman goes on the attack at multiple locations near wichita. it is 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." >> good morning, everyone. it is friday, february 26th, i'm alex witt and we begin with this breaking news out of kansas this morning. where a shooting spree has left four people including the gunman dead.

another 14 were injured. the series of shootings took place in hesston, kansas, which is about 30 milesç or so northf wichita. the shootings began around 5:00 p.m. local time. the gunman was in a car when he shot one man on the street and another person near an intersection. he was reportedly armed with an assault style long gun and a pistol. the shooting spree culminated at excel industry, that's a lawn care company where the gunman worked and where 15 people were shot. >> all i know is i see people running and so i'm assuming fire. and so i take a few steps and i hear, pop, pop, i thought the paint cans or something was going up. more people running, all of a sudden, pop, pop, pop. i started to r=r+unesr @&h(lc% >> shooting at random. and he came out, you know, he was following people out the back. and i thought he was going to shoot me. so i ran.

>> now according to the harvey county county's office, five people died. and the gunman was killed by a responding officer. hours after the shooting police and a s.w.a.t. team surrounded the home of the gunman. the sheriff's office says authorities initiallyç believea roommate may have been inside the home but after securing the search warrant officers found no one inside. right now we are awaiting the word to confirm the name of the gunman. we'll bring you more on this story with a live report later on in the show. after three straight double digit election night victories for donald trump, rival candidates threw everything they could at the front-runner last night as republican hopefuls met for a fierce tenth debate in texas where marco rubio led the attack. rubio pounced on trump at the out set and did not let up. challenging trump as a hypocrite on immigration and trade. >> if he builds the wall the way he built trump towers he'll be using illegal immigrant labor to do it.

just endorse marco rubio already? should have done it before new hampshire or nevada where he had a little sway. too late now. romney said me think donald doth protest him too much. and donald took him on in the debate. >> mitt romney didn't file his return until september 21st of 2012, about a month and a half before the election. and it cost him big. >> romney said that trump was mistaken, and he had released two years of back taxes early in the primary process. but trump says he cannot do the same. >> as far as my return, i want to file it. except for many years i have been audited every year. 12 years or something like that. every year they audit me,ç aud me, audit me. i will absolutely give me return but i'm being audited now for two or three years so i can't do it until the audit is finished. obviously. i think people would understand that. >> donald says he's being

seconds. a day after hillary clinton was interrupted by a black lives matter activist, the democratic front-runner responded, a young lady ashley williams held up a banner we have to bring them to heel and asked them why she called black youth super predators in a speech in the 0 19090s. she said i was talking about the violent crime that vicious cartels were having across this country and the particular danger they pose to children and families. i would not use those words today. well, those comments came on a day in which joe and mika sat down with secretary clinton for a wide ranging interview ahead of south carolina's primary. and here she is talking about calls for her to release the transcripts of her paid speeches on wall street. >> the real question underneath this is okay, if you take money from wall street, can you regulate wall street? >> right. >> well, barack obama took more

the issue made its way to the campaign trail earlier in the day. hillary clinton exprelsed concern about the concern of a sandoval nomination saying she hoped the president would pick a true progressive. >> andç i'm deeply disappointe that the senate of the united states has said sight unseen we're not going to consider anybody you send. now, there's been some talk that maybe the president would nominate the republican governor of nevada. now, i love nevada, especially after last weekend i really love nevada and i know the governor has done some good things but i sure hope the president chooses a true progressive. who will stand up for the values and the interests of the people of this country who understands that you need to protect the right to vote of a person. not the right of a corporation to buy an election. >> well the president will meet with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and senate

on this story for you and let you know more in terms of a motive and other news as soon as we get it. let's move to sports a grand jury will decide whether to charge johnny manziel on allegations he attacked his ex-girlfriend after initially closing the investigation for apparent lack of evidence. dallas police have asked the dallas county d.a.'s office to present the case to the local grand jury. if charged, manziel can face a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. manziel's accuser, colleen crowley, was granted a protective order after filing an affidavit detailing her account of the january 29th incident. in it, she says manziel had been physically with her, grabbing her by the hair, trying to throw her in a car and then hitting her with an open hand. manziel reportedly agreed to the protective order, forbidding him from seeing crowley for two years and paid her attorney's fees of $12,500. neither manziel or his attorney made a public çstatement.

meanwhile, his agent and marketing agency have both dropped him and the browns have indicated they plan to cut ties with the quarterback. let's turn now to some rule changes in major league baseball as yesterday the league announced that it has banned takeout slides to break up potential double plays. the runner must now make contact with the ground ahead of the base. and additionally the league introduced a 30 second clock for mound visits by coaches, between the inning breaks being reduced by 20 seconds. finally, let's go to the nba. the warriors steph curry needed to make one three-pointer last night to set a new nba record of 128 consecutive regular season games with a three-point shot.ñ' but you know just for good measure, he sank ten. show off. there you go. although we do love that. among the one you saw that was a half court shot at the buzzer. he racked up 51 points in the game.

weather in the future. now we're headed to march next week we will see the big warm-ups. we're at 60 today in montana. much of the west is about 10 to 20 degrees above normal. u is headed across the nation. this is nice. as cold as it is this morning, it will be this afternoon in the eastern half of the country we are going to warm it up. near record if not record high, we have a shot of 60 degrees in minnesota at the end of february. that doesn't happen often. whatever snow that is son the ground will be melted quickly. 71 in denver. and watching the east, we raised the temperatures from saturday into sunday by about 10 to 15 degrees. 62 in d.c. the mid-atlantic looks great on saturday. new england not bad in the 50s. and alex, it gets interesting on tuesday and wednesday, we will see a storm in the middle of the country and of course tuesday is super tuesday and it looks like we could be dealing with severe weather. texas, louisiana and arkansas. of course texas, oklahoma and
