and we will not allow the next president of the united states to be someone under fbi investigation like hillary clinton. >> head to head, our campaign beats donald trump resoundingly. but for that to happen, we must come together. good morning. it's wednesday, march 2, i'm jonathan cape hart. super tuesday was a sweeping victory for donald trump but first, new results in alaska where nbc news projects senator ted cruz to be the winner in the state's caucuses winning by less than a thousand votes. this as trump claimed a smashing wins in the south, a 22-point margin in alabama. 14 point victories in tennessee and georgia. with tighter wins in arkansas and virginia. up north, his margin of victory in massachusetts was 31 points and in vermont he won by three points over ohio governor john
2:31 am
kasich. along with alaska, ted cruz carried oklahoma and his home state of texas by a comfortable margin. 44% to trump's 27%. trump finished first or second in all but one contest, minnesota. where 37% gave marco rubio his only victory night in the state's caucuses and cruz won 29%, trump finished third with 21%. overall, trump came away with the most delegates last night. 210 so far. he's leading the field in the total delegate count with 100 more delegates than ted cruz and nearly triple the amount claimed by marco rubio. and the energy in this presidential race appears squarely on the republican side. with another night of record turnouts in nearly every state, the turnout in virginia and texas more than doubled from 2008. minnesota was up by 78%, continuing a string of record turnouts that started in iowa. and take a look at this. the 8.3 million republicans and
2:32 am
5.5 million democrats voting in nine states yesterday is nearly the mirror image of the 2008 race when democrats turned out 8.2 million and the republicans turned out 5 million. now to the democrats where hillary clinton solidified her front-runner status with wins in seven states to bernie sanders' four. secretary clinton won massachusetts and swept the south claiming victories in arkansas, tennessee, virginia, texas, georgia and alabama. she also won the caucuses in american samoa. as for senator sanders he notched wins in his home state of vermont, and also oklahoma, colorado and minnesota. here's a look at the super tuesday map on the democratic side. at this hour, nbc news is allocating 461 delegates to clinton and 295 to sanders. add those totals to the delegates the candidates had accumulated in the four contests and it stands clinton 979 and
2:33 am
sanders 382. it was a banner night for trump who took in the results from his estate in palm beach and called a primetime press conference with governor chris christie at his side. he pushed pack against marco rubio's recent attacks and looked past the primary to the general election. >> i want to congratulate ted on the winning of texas. he worked hard on it and i know how hard he worked actually. so i congratulate ted cruz on that win, that was an excellent win. i know it was a very tough night for marco rubio. he had a tough night, but he worked hard. he spent a lot of money, he's a light weight as i said many times before. he was very, very nasty. i never heard a person get up and speak on an evening like this and be so nasty, but he has a right to be nasty. he's not doing to win very much. i watched hillary clinton's speech, everything is poor, everything is doing badly, she's
2:34 am
been there for so long. i mean, if she hasn't straight upped it out -- straightened it out by now, it will become worse and worse. she wants to make america whole again, i'm trying to figure out what that is all again. make america great is better than making america whole again. we have expanded the republican party. when you look at what's happened in south carolina and you see the kind of numbers that we got in terms of extra people coming in, they came from the democratic party or the democrat party and the democrats and they're long time democrats and they were never going to switch. they all switched and they were independents. if i'm doing to win all of these states with tremendous numbers, and if i'm going to come in the worst in second in the two or the three i might not win, i think, you know, we're a democracy. i think it's awfully hard to say that's not the person we want to lead the party. right? i am a unifier. i would love to see the republican party and everybody get together and unify. and when we unify, there's
2:35 am
nobody, nobody, that's going to be to beat us. >> in texas, ted cruz kept his presidential bid alive with a big win in the lone star state. and he appealed for the republican party to turn to him if it hopes to halt donald trump's march to the nomination. >> republicans, together we have a choice. we are blessed with a deep, talented, honorable field. for the candidates who have not yet won a state, who have not racked up significant delegates, i ask you to prayerfully consider our coming together. uniting. for those who have supported other candidates, we welcome you on our team, standing united as one. >> the path forward for marco rubio is less clear after taking just one state last night. minnesota.
2:36 am
fewer than a thousand votes separate him and john kasich for second in massachusetts. he was hoping to steal virginia and even though he fell to second there, he won over many late voters even winning tea party congressman's dave bratt's district. he won't take any at large delegates in texas or alabama and rubio came on strong at the end. easily winning over people who made their decisions late. earlier in the day, trump said he thinks rubio will have to get out, but the senator's campaign is looking ahead to the convention in cleveland saying, statewide wins don't matter, delegates do. >> tonight was supposed to be ted cruz's night. it was supposed to be the night he swept all the southern state t most conservative part of the country. he leaves with a win in texas, he doesn't take all the delegates and win in the neighboring state of oklahoma and he doesn't take all the
2:37 am
delegates. >> there's only two outcomes for you, either you don't catch trump and he becomes the nominee or you have to take this all to the way to the convention? there does not seem to be a mathematical path for you to clinch the nomination before cleveland. have you come to that conclusion? >> no, i don't believe that. once it gets to the winner take all phase, the map gets friendlier for us. i mean, look, if a couple people weren't on the pal lot we would have won virginia tonight and a couple other states as well. we feel good as we get into march 15th. but the question is how does donald trump get all the delegates? >> like rubio, hillary clinton celebrated with a rally in miami. she made brief mention of bernie sanders and then with an eye towards the general election, painted herself as the unifier america needs while swiping at the front-runner on the republican side. >> we know we've got work to do. but that work -- that work is not to make america great again. america never stopped being great.
2:38 am
we -- we have to make america whole. we have to fill in -- fill in what's been hollowed out. >> usa, usa! usa! usa! >> you know, we have to make strong the broken places, restitch the bonds of trust and respect across our country. instead of building walls, we're going to break down barriers and build ladders of opportunity and empowerment. so every american can live up to his or her potential. because then and only then can america live up to its full potential too.
2:39 am
it's clear tonight that the stakes in this election have never been higher. and the rhetoric we're hearing on the other side has never been lower. trying to divide america between us and them is wrong and we're not going to let it work. >> after being project the winner of the vermont primary, bernie sanders greeted a raucous crowd of his supporters in his home state. the senator touted winning hundreds of delegates yesterday and like clinton, took a shot at donald trump. >> thank you! it is -- it is good to be home. you know, i have been all over
2:40 am
this country, but the truth is it is great and great to come home and see all my friends. now tonight, you're going to see a lot of election results come in. let me remind you of what the media often forgets about. this not a general election, it's not winner take all. if you get 52%, you get 48%, you roughly end up with the same amount of delegates in a state. by the end of tonight, we are going to win many hundreds of delegates. when we bring our people together, when we do not allow the donald trumps of the world to divide us up, when we bring
2:41 am
our people together and when we have the courage to stand up to the billionaire class and tell them they can't have it all, that our government belongs to all of us, not just super pacs and wealthy campaign contributors. >> sanders and his campaign staff remained defined after the polls closed last night. the senator released a statement that reads in part, quote, our campaign is just getting started. we're going all the way to the democratic national convention in philadelphia and beyond. two top republicans are calling out donald trump for failing to disavow david duke and the kkk during a weekend television interview. both house speaker paul ryan and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell rebuked trump's remarks yesterday in front of reporters. >> i want to be very clear about
2:42 am
something. if a person wants to be the nominee of the republican party, there can be no evasion and no games. they must reject any group or cause that is built on bigotry. this party does not prey on people's prejudices. we appeal to their highest ideals. >> that's been a lot of talk in the last 24 hours or so about one of our presidential candidates and his seeming ambivalence about david duke and the kkk, so let me make it perfectly clear. senate republicans condemn david duke. the kkk. and his racism. >> you're quoted in "the new york times" not directly but saying that you're prepared to drop donald trump like a hot rock. are you prepared to distance yourself from -- >> i don't remember saying anything like that to all of
2:43 am
you. >> is it something that you privately -- >> i don't remember saying anything like that to all of you. >> look, i don't want to waste a lot of time. i disavowed -- okay, i'm going to get along great with congress. paul ryan, i don't know him well. i'm sure i'll get him along great with him and if i don't, he'll have to pay a big price, okay? >> after being criticized by donald trump yesterday, governor nikki haley responded in the most southern of ways. trump fired off a tweet, including this one which reads the people of south carolina are embarrassed by nikki haley. just a short time later, governor haley responded with her own tweet reading, donald trump, mess your heart. still ahead on "way too early," find out why vice president biden thanked donald trump for an event during black
