2:22 am
>> good morning. great to be on. >> it was a real busy nice last night and i was watching the debate, saying the candidates would back trump, but not so in the campaign. what does this say about the state of the gop? >> well, you have to remember, you have to go back to last fall. the candidates signed a pledge to back whoever the gop nominee is which was intended to keep trump from running as a third party. but now it's sort of backfiring on the republicans because they have to say whether -- if they'll support him in the fall. clearly there's still huge divides over what factcally -- exactly to do with donald trump. they have two options. they can embrace him or run away from him, try to stop him at a convention. something like that. but clearly, this is challenging the republican party over its own identity. and over what it means to be a conservative. and those are two very, very big questions at the republican -- that the republican party has to wrestle with.
2:23 am
>> and donald trump may not win all the delegates he needs to get the nomination and that could be a contested convention. what are the odds? >> that's something that political reporters we like to bring up every four years and it never happens. this year it appears to be more plausible than others. really, that's what mitt romney was calling for yesterday in the speech if you look at what he suggests to block trump. he basically says if you live in a state where rubio is leading in the polls like florida, you need to vote for rubio. if you live in state say louisiana where cruz is doing better in the polls, vote for cruz. the idea being just to deny trump delegates as much as you can so then we get to the convention and try to fix this. and really that seems to be the republican establishment's plan at the moment. is to just -- you know, don't let trump get a majority and we'll figure it out at the convention. >> how is this all this gop bickering working for or against hillary clinton now? is this turning off voters or do you think maybe they'll flock to the polls? >> it will be interesting.
2:24 am
the actual gop bickering, the party will probably unite in the end. but trump obviously helps hillary clinton or at least people think he does in terms of, you know, basically giving democrats something to hate because they don't particularly like her all that much. >> kevin, we may see sooner rather than later. kevin robillard, thank you for your time. >> good to be on. well, just ahead, some sad news about bernie sanders' minime. plus, how one homeowner got his revenge on a package stealing thief. the best investm. by looking at global and local insights to benefit from different points of view. and by consistently breaking apart risk to focus on long-term value. we actively manage with expertise and conviction. so you can invest with more certainty. mfs. that's the power of active management. make you feel like an svp doeinstead of a vp? a new desk
