big day in michigan for a bunch of reasons tomorrow. that does it for us tonight. we will see you again tomorrow starting at 6:00 eastern for the start of our primary night coverage. "first look" is up next. it's tuesday, march 8th. right now, breaking overnight, a commuter train derails. emergency personnel are on the scene. a jury has awarded $55 million to sportscaster erin andrews in the naked video stalker civil case. voters head to the polls in multiple states today with the big prize being michigan and their rich number of delegates. we get new details on the funeral arrangements for former first lady nancy reagan. strong hail and dangerous weather around the nation. the incredible sight of a plane crash landing before your eyes and the bizarre scene on the texas highway.

"first look" starts right now. good morning. i'm dara brown. breaking overnight, at least 14 people are injured, serve seriously after a commuter train derailed in california, just south of san francisco. it hit after the train hit a large tree which caused it to derail. that car, part of the five-car corridor express train weighs 120,000 pounds. but luckily, there were just six passengers and one crew member on board. the second car derailed but stayed upright. all passengers had been removed from the train. one commuter in the first car was on his way home. >> so -- well, i was in the first car that went down into the river. it feels unreal honestly, because everything was normal. thank god i didn't sleep on the train, because i was aware of everything. it shifted the gravity and then we were all panicking. there were two people hurt pretty badly.

one member was just under the mudslide so we were trying to dig her out while the train was hanging. so it was a pretty crazy experience. pretty much the -- like the big -- like the one portion of the train was missing in the beginning. all we saw was just water at one point. >> it was the last train of the night training from san jose to stockton at the time of the derailment. the officials reported storms and heavy rain in the area. train service on the line is cancelled for today. after months of consideration, billionaire michael bloomberg announces he will not enter the 2016 presidential race. the former new york city mayor says he doesn't believe he could win and he fears his candidacy would help either donald trump or ted cruz both of whom he sharply criticized. mitt romney is still attacking the donald, now recalling anti-trump robocalls on behalf of mub -- rubio. it may all be too little, too late, however. the latest monmouth university

poll shows donald trump with a 13 point lead in michigan, ahead of tonight's primary. republicans also face off in mississippi, idaho and hawaii. the democrats will hold primaries in michigan and mississippi today. in the latest polling shows hillary clinton with a 13-point lead over bernie sanders in michigan. nbc's tracie potts is joining us from washington, d.c. with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we're focussed on the numbers that you just showed us from monmouth are why this is such a big deal for bernie sanders. he's behind. they have more than 150 delegates to give to democrats up there in michigan today. and he's got to grab quite a few of them to remain competitive. today's michigan's primary could be bernie sanders' last chance to beat hillary clinton. he's disputing the claim he voted against saving the auto industry. >> what i did not vote for was a middle class bailout for the crooks on wall street.

>> reporter: in a fox news town hall, clinton reached out to sanders' supporterers. >> i hope to win the nomination and work with him. >> reporter: and the republicans are focused on mississippi's primary. >> raise your right hand, everybody. do you swear that you're going to vote for donald trump tomorrow? raise that hand. i love you. >> reporter: ted cruz is going after trump supporters there. >> we are seeing the folks who had been supporting donald trump who are realizing he isn't who they thought he was. >> we need someone that will unite this party and i can and i will. >> rubio, rubio, rubio! >> reporter: in florida, marco rubio is the underdog now facing attack ads from trump. >> all talk, no action. >> reporter: the latest poll shows rubio closing in, but stilt eight points behind trump in rubio's home state. florida votes next tuesday. and of course ohio is also next tuesday and those are the two states that could slow down

donald trump. right now, john kasich is doing much better in his home state. kasich is four points behind trump in ohio. >> tracie potts, thank you. well, a nashville jury has awarded erin andrews $55 million in her lawsuit against the stalker who secretly recorded her naked in her hotel room and the companies that owned the hotel. after several days of testimony which included andrews herself and her convicted stalker, the jury took only a matter of hours before finding in andrews' favor. nbc's morgan radford has the details. >> reporter: it was a tense day in court for erin andrews. but it only took seven hours for this. >> was the defendant michael david barrett at fault, yes. did he enter win windsor capital, yes. >> reporter: michael barrett is responsible for 51% of the amount and the hotel owner and management company, 49%.

the decision was unanimous. the judge ordered the courtroom camera turned off so that andrews could speak to the jury. andrews sued for $75 million for emotional distress. after a video taken of her undressing in her nashville hotel eight years ago went viral. >> i think the thing that's really hit home for me and hurts me the worst is when girls -- high school, college, they tweet me and they say, i want to be erin andrews, except for the marriott stalker thing. and i can't control that. >> reporter: she claimed the hotel granted stalker michael barrett's request to the room next to her. the hotel's lawyer says barrett is a criminal who manipulated the reservation system. >> banks created bank robbers. are banks responsible for bank robbers? >> reporter: barrett testified via video and he admitted he was wrong. >> i felt bad for her, i felt --

i knew it would affect a lot of people. >> reporter: after seven days of emotional testimony a resolution. >> she can't put a monetary figure on this. so that's why the jury came back with a lesser figure. >> nbc's morgan rad ford reporting. funeral arrangements are set for former first lady nancy reagan who died on sunday. she will lie in repose at the ronald reagan presidential library tomorrow and thursday. a private funeral is held on friday at 11:00 a.m. the white house says first lady michelle obama will be among those attending. she will be buried alongside her husband, ronald reagan. >> as somebody who has been lucky enough to be have an extraordinary partner in my life as well, i know how much she meant not just to president reagan but to the country as a

whole. >> the president has ordered flags lowered to half-staff at the white house and all federal buildings. more than 150 members of the al shabaab terror group were killed in somalia. senior defense officials say that the strikes happened overnight sunday. about 120 miles north of moog adish shoe. there was a large-scale attack against u.s. and regional government forces in the region. it's unclear if senior leaders were killed. a bizarre scene where a woman disrobed and danced naked on an 18 wheeler. deputies were called in for reports of an accident and authorities aren't sure why she claimed the truck were able to coax her down after about two hours. >> because she was talking about all sorts of things. wall street, the cia, aliens. all types of things.

at risk in this severe weather area. that's the yellow coloring. there's about eight to nine million in the orange covering. we expect a greater risk of the severe weather there. including isolated tornados so that's off in houston and corpus christi. the timing is late this evening. overnight event when it is dark. those are the very dangerous events. if there's tornadoes out there -- the storm chasers can help us, we have to rely on radar to help us. so flash flood weather greatly increases tomorrow. look at the coverage of the yellow and the oranges. that's heavy rain from st. louis down to louisiana. the possibility is there in the area of pink, orange and yellow, five to ten inches of rain. severe weather threat, then we have the flooding threat. on the east coast, by the way, you'll be outdoors today.

we could be 75 in d.c. three days in a row. >> thank you so much. well, some incredible dash cam footage shows a garbage truck crashing through a guard rail and dropping from an i-95 ramp in miami into a park nearly 100 feet below. the driver who was thrown from the cab miraculously survived. in illinois, police shared video of a driver cruising down the road with the 15-foot tree stuck in the front of their car. the driver was pulled over and cited for diu. a plane fell from the sky -- watch that, oh, my. the pilot and daughter were returning from a college visit and the engine failed. sonya sotomayor talked about the late justice antonin scalia at the college of law on monday. she said, scalia was like the

just create an event, but to create a global conversation about genius. where we really are asking people what they think. and that global -- that global conversation has grown so much over the past couple of years. we are literally seeing events from new york to l.a. to guatemala and beyond. so it's exceeded our expectations. >> that's amazing. doctor, how do you define genius? >> you know, people really debate the definition of genius. most would say it's extraordinary ability or thought, it changes things for us some in some way and other people would argue that. but what's interesting about -- i'm on the board of the "y" and my partnership with this project that we're asking people to think of their open -- own

definitions of genius to be innovative in how they think about genius and how genius has the power to make change. some of the projects have to do with youth leaders in their countries. looking at how they can come up with the genius ideas to change problems that they're having. like gender inequity, you know, food shortages, so on. i think that's really what is exciting about this. is to encourage people to think about what creative thought they can use to do social good. >> i know you had several categories in this because you have morality and politics. obviously, we have moved beyond any sort of clinical interpretation of genius here. but asia, the 92nd street "y" is is having this. so. >> so tomorrow night we have a debate on artificial intelligence and we're talking about if will make our world a

better place or generate drastic unintended consequences. so seven days of incredible programming at 92nd street "y" and on air at msnbc. so we're partnering with for example, u.n. women. there will be 20-plus events of young people coming together in countries from malaysia to pakistan and beyond to talk about genius ideas for combating gender inequality and we're partnering with some incubators and accelerators at rome and athens and jerusalem for events around entrepreneurship and innovation. a real focus on young people. and ideas that will better the world. a real focus in general throughout the week on how genius, how ever you define it, can make the world a better place. >> so we're done to the final two in the ultimate genius showdown. so i want to check in with you. >> barack obama, the theory of
