2:30 am
but i beat him in 13 contests. he never mentions that. >> we have about the delegates to be selected, and that's what's going to be an interesting thing to see how it all turns out as we move forward over the next couple weeks. >> republicans chose substance over slime in last night's debate in miami. what i want to know is, who are those people and what have they done with the presidential candidates? plus, a donald trump supporter is charged with assault after he's caught on camera punching a protester. and that's not the only allegation of someone getting roughed up on the trail. and saying good-bye to nancy reagan. hillary clinton and michelle obama among the many dignitaries expected to bid a final farewell to a former first lady. 5:30 on the west coast, 2:30 on the west, this is "way too early."
2:31 am
good morning. it's friday, march 11th. i'm jonathan capehart. the fallout from a moment of silence at the trump event. it began at wednesday's trump rally in north carolina. authorities were escorting 26-year-old rakeem jones and four others from the event when 78-year-old john mcgraw walked toward the aisle, allegedly threw an elbow into jones' eye, then went back to his seat. mcgraw spoke to "inside edition" at the end of the rally. >> did you like the event? >> you bet i liked it. >> that did you like about it? >> knocking the hell out of that big mouth. we don't know who he is, but we know he's not acting like an american. >> so he deserved it? >> every bit of it. >> what was that? >> yes, he deserved it. the next time we see him, we might have to kill him. >> mcgraw went on to say we
2:32 am
don't know who he is. he might be with the terrorist organization. yesterday, mcgraw was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct. the trump campaign issued a seven word statement, quote, we are not involved in that incident. on msnbc yesterday, jones and ronnie roust who was also being escorted out by police reacted to what happened. >> like i got -- like i got hit and now i'm on the ground getting detained by the police and they're not actually looking at the video and i really got hit. they watched it really like, you can see -- being escorted by the officers. like they're still -- they're still leading me up the stair. >> the guy hits the guy in front of the police. on the side of the police. and they throw rakeem down and they tell the guy to sit down. and he finishes eating his popcorn, you know? it's crazy that you get pretty
2:33 am
much almost arrested because you got assaulted. >> later democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton weighed in. and trump responded to questions during and after last night's debate. >> count me among those who are truly distraught and even appalled by what i see going on, what i hear being said. clearly i know that everybody in public life gets protested against and sometimes people do have to be removed. but it should be done in an appropriate manner. other people in the audience should not be joining in. mr. trump should not be urging people on. this is deeply distressing. >> do you believe that you have done anything to create a tone where this kind of violence would be encouraged? >> i hope not. i truly hope not. i will say this. we have 25, 30,000 people you have seen it yourself. people come with tremendous passion and love for the country. and when they see protests in some cases, you know, you're
2:34 am
mentioning one case, which i haven't seen, i have heard about it, which i don't like, but when they see what's going on in this country they have anger that's unbelievable. they have anger. they love this country. >> i've never seen a protester throw a punch. i have seen your supporters get rough with protesters. >> 78 years old, i got to see a little clip. he threw a punch. i don't know if he hit. but he was -- he's a impassed person, i guess he didn't like what he was seeing, but we don't condone it. we don't like it. it was debate number 12 for the republicans and after increasingly ugly exchanges in the tenth and 11th debates the candidates ratcheted back the personal attacks, focusing mostly on policy. even the drudge report went up with the headline, finally, they're boring. >> i will do everything within my power not to touch social security, to leave it the way it
2:35 am
is. to make this country rich again, to bring back our job, to get rid of deficits and get rid of waste, fraud and abuse which is rampant in this country. totally rampant. it is my absolute intention to leave social security the way it is. not increase the age. and to leave it as is. >> the bottom line we can't continue to tiptoe around this and throw out things like i'm going to get it for fraud and abuse. let's get rid of fraud and abuse. let's be more careful about how we spend foreign aid. but you have hundreds of billions of dollars of deficit that you're going to have to make up. here's the thing. if we do not do it, we'll have a debt crisicrisis. >> listen, we have we have lots of challenges in the world but the answer is not wave a magic wand, you have to have real solutions and it's like government spending. it is very easy. hillary clinton says she'll cut, waste, fraud and abuse, if only we had smarter people in washington that would fix the problem.
2:36 am
you know what? that's the statement of a liberal who doesn't understand that government is the problem. >> you have said positive things about putin as a leader and about china's has kerr of pro democracy protesters at tiananmen square. the chinese government almost blew it when they poured in the square, they were vicious and horrible and put it down with strength. that shows you the power of strength. how do you respond -- >> that doesn't mean i was endorsing. i said that is a strong, powerful government that put it down -- and they kept down the riot. it was a horrible thing. doesn't mean at all i was endorsing it. as far as putin is concerned i think he's been a strong leader for russia. he's been a lot stronger than our leader that, i can tell you. that doesn't mean i'm endorsing putin. strong doesn't mean good. putden is a strong leader. absolutely. i can name many strong leaders. i can name very many very weak leaders but he's a strong leader. i don't say that in a good way
2:37 am
or bad way. i say it as a fact. >> rubio and trump also clashed on cuba. here's an exchange where trump defended the willingness to keep the door to diplomacy open. >> i don't agree with president obama. i do agree that something -- should take place. after 50 years it's enough time, folks. but we have to make a good deal and get rid of all the litigation that's going to happen. i would probably have the embassy closed until such time as a really good deal was made and strict by the united states. >> all right. first of all, the embassy is the former consulate, the same building so it can be called a consulate. we don't have to close it that way. second of all, i don't know if cuba will sue us, but if they sue us in a court in miami they would lose. third -- third on the issue of a good deal, i know what if good deal is. i'll tell the good deal is codified. cuba has free elections. cuba stops putting people in jail for speaking out. cuba kicks off the russians and kicks out the chinese listening station and stops helping income
2:38 am
income invade the u.n. sanctions. he takes the cop killer and sends her back to united states and the jail where she belongs that's a good deal. >> thank you. >> donald trump says former republican presidential candidate ben carson is going to endorse him today. a news conference is expected in palm beach this morning. at the debate last night, trump talked about one issue where he believes carson could play a role. >> it was very interesting, i was with dr. ben carson who is endorsing me by the way. we spoke for an hour on education. he has a great handle on it. he wants competitive schools and he wants different things that are terrific including charter schools by the way that the unions are fighting like crazy. but charter schools work and they work very well. so there are a lot of things but i'm going to have ben very much involved in education, something
2:39 am
that is really an expertise of him. president obama weighed in on the state of the republican race yesterday during his news conference with prime minister justin trudeau. he was asked about claims about the polarized political climate under his administration has contributed to the rise of someone like donald trump. here's his response. >> i have been blamed by republicans for a lot of things, but being blamed for their primaries and who they're selecting for their party is novel. i don't think that i was the one to prompt questions about my birth certificate, for example. i don't remember saying, hey, why don't you ask me about that? you know? why don't you, you know, question whether i'm american or whether i'm loyal or whether i
2:40 am
have america's best interests at heart. those aren't things that were prompted by any actions of mine. and so what you're seeing within the republican party is to some degree up all those efforts over a course of time. creating an environment where somebody like a donald trump can drive. >> when asked if he'd be endorsing a candidate in the democratic primary, he said he thinks that the democratic voters are working it out just fine and helping the party's nominee win the general election. meanwhile, bernie sanders addressed a pair of massive crowds across florida ahead of that state's primary next tuesday. he began his day in miami before traveling to the university of florida in gainesville where he turned out a crowd of about 5,600 people.
2:41 am
later in the day he held a rally in kiss aimee where 8,000 people gathered to watch him speak. he said that the key to success is large voter turnout. >> now here in florida, next tuesday, i believe that if there is a large turnout, if you come out and you and your friends and family and neighbors come out we'll win here in florida. >> that's a bold prediction given his standings in recent polls. a "washington post" poll shows him trailing hillary clinton by almost 40 points. speaking of hillary clinton she travelled to her birth state of illinois yesterday which is in that group of states holding democratic primaries on tuesday. clinton held an event in the suburbs of chicago about 30 minutes from where she drew up. calling the trip an emotional

2:42 am
and overwhelming experience. that comes as her opponent is looking to sway voters in the state with three new 30-second tv spots and one of them takes aim at chicago mayor emanuel. >> in chicago, we have endured a corrupt political system and the chief politician standing in the way of us getting good schools is our mayor. if you have a presidential candidate who supports someone like our mayor you have a candidate not willing to take on the establishment. bernie sanders is definitely not afraid to take on the system. he looks beyond that system and sees better possibilities for us. he sees that this is not the way it has to be. that is why i support bernie sanders. >> let's turn to business now. where yesterday, european central bank chief draghi unleashed aggressive measures that shocked the markets for all of about 20 minutes. cnbc's nancy -- okay.
2:43 am
well, we'll go to london. draghi wasn't -- nancy. let's just go to business. >> hi, there, guys. well, a big day for the markets here, following the ecb decision. a lot of confusion, a bit of a roller coaster ride there. markets really cheered the initial announcement that fell back on the equity side when people expressed disappointment over the forward guidance from mario draghi. a different story here though. we have the euro moving in the opposite direction and equities moving sharply higher in europe as investors digest that big bazooka of stimulus measures that the ecb announced to boost inflation here and boost growth. so a lot of uncertainty over how that will play out. for now, u.s. markets are called higher as well. the other big story to watch here is continuing war of words between apple and the fbi.
2:44 am
we're now hearing charges of corrosive, that's one of the findings coming out of a new filing from federal prosecutors against apple. saying that they now have probable cause that the iphone involved in the san bernardino case likely holds evidence of the eventual attack. more pressure building on apple, but apple is set to release a response. they're due to hold a hearing on march 22nd in southern california. back to you. >> nancy hulgrave, live from london, thank you. apologies to everyone for the mix-up on my end over here. thanks very much. today, former first lady nancy reagan will be laid to rest at the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley, california. according to "the los angeles times" over the past two times more than 4,500 people came to pay last respects during a viewing. a private funeral will take place today. close family and friends will be
2:45 am
in attendance and dozens of celebrities and politicians. including first lady michelle obama and katie couric. brian williams will host special coverage from 1:00 to 5:00. still ahead, we'll tell you which pro athlete is ready to switch from the nba and the nfl. we continue to follow severe weather in parts of the south. five people now dead and at least 3,500 homes evacuated after that historic flooding. bill karins has an update when "way too early" comes right back. i'm chris bosh.
2:46 am
when i was sidelined with blood clots in my lung, it was serious. fortunately, my doctor had a game plan. treatment with xarelto®.
2:47 am
hey guys! hey, finally, somebody i can look up to... ...besides arnie. xarelto® is proven to treat and help reduce the risk of dvt and pe blood clots. xarelto® is also proven to reduce the risk of stroke in people with afib, not caused by a heart valve problem. for people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there's limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. you know, i tried warfarin, but the blood testing and dietary restrictions... don't get me started on that. i didn't have to. we started on xarelto®. nice pass. safety first. like all blood thinners, don't stop taking xarelto® without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. while taking, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. xarelto® can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. get help right away for unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. if you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto®, watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve
2:48 am
or abnormal bleeding. tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. before starting xarelto®, tell your doctor about any kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. you know xarelto® is the #1 prescribed blood thinner in its class. that's a big win. it is for me. with xarelto® there is no regular blood monitoring and no known dietary restrictions. treatment with xarelto®... ...was the right move for us. ask your doctor about xarelto®. at ally bank, no branches equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like bill splitting equals nitpicking. but i only had a salad. it was a buffalo chicken salad. salad. welcome back to "way too early." i want to get a check on that flood emergency to our south. bill karins is standing by at 30 rock. how is it looking?
2:49 am
>> unfortunately not good. this is two or three days in a row, louisiana around now mississippi into the mix now too. i would expect an emergency in a short period of time in southern mississippi. numerous reports outside the holcomb area, of water evacuations. a dangerous situation. we have been doing this for 48 hours at least. 14 million people in the watch. the flash flood watch. we have 1.5 million people in the warning. and an additional two to four inches. we have this area of rain right now over this location. it's just sitting here. it's been doing it all night long. in six hours time i told you the water rescues are taking place, thunderstorms have sat in the same spot for six straight hours. that's bad news anywhere in the country let alone the saturated soils here. we're watching the storms approaching new orleans. so the pumps in new orleans will get to work as the first bands
2:50 am
of heavy rain do approach you there. just south of lake pontchartrain. now we'll watch the water levels in southern mississippi this weekend and we'll have problems similar with near record flooding. this is how much additional rain we'll see. there's a possibility this red and the pink and the orange, that's four, five, seven inches of rain. isolated spots could get more than that. here's the weekend forecast, the relents will rains in louisiana and mississippi. noticeably cooler up to new york and boston. then the rain continues for one more day, down around new orleans on saturday. then finally we dry you out in the deep south on sunday. some of that wet weather will move up to the north. jonathan, more of the same pictures. this time it won't be louisiana, but mississippi is getting it the worst right now. >> bill, thanks very much. in the state of ohio, john kasich may be the governor. but buckeye football is king, baby, as dave chappelle might say. ohio state head coach urban
2:51 am
meyer endorsed governor kasich for president in a video released by the campaign. >> well, shelly and i would like to tell you and care than the leadership you have shown in the state of ohio since we have been back and even before, your friendship as a friend, and as a true supporter of what you stand for, now i know what you really stand for, we'd like to tell you we wish you the best. go win this darn thing. >> meyer has become without question one of the most recognizable faces in the state. he's won 50 games and lost just four since taking over at ohio state back in 2012. the buckeyes won the national championship under his watch in 2014. let's turn now to some other headlines out of the world of sports. we begin in the nba where last night, two future hall of famers met on the same court for the last time. here they are at the staples center in l.a. kobe bryant and lebron james in the last match-up before kobe retires at the end of the
2:52 am
season. nba legend made it count. rising to the occasion to make 11 of 16 shots and lead the lakers in scoring with 26 points. lebron would add 24 points for the cavs and put on a show of his own. and despite kobe's stellar performance, cleveland would hold off l.a. with a 120-108 victory. one former nba player now says he wants to try his hand at the nfl. nba free agent nate robinson who played both basketball and football in college at the university of washington up announced yesterday in a video posted online that he wants to make the transition. >> nate robinson, the best sport is football. peel tell him all the time, anybody can play football it was you. >> it was easy to see he was so good in both that he'd probably have to pick one or he was going to lose that edge that he had clearly in both. >> i don't think anybody's ever played basketball or football. you have deion sanders to play football and baseball, why not
2:53 am
be the first to do it? >> robinson is one of the smallest players in recent nba history at 5'0.9". but he was among the most athletic in the league. i guess when you're that small you can fly far. still ahead, a match made in heaven as president obama plays elder statesman to a young prime minister. "way too early" is back in a moment. it took joel silverman years to become a master dog trainer. but only a few commands to master depositing checks at chase atms. technology designed for you. so you can easily master the way you bank.
2:54 am
it takesi'm on the move.. to all day long...ss. and sometimes, i just don't eat the way i should. so i drink boost to get the nutrition that i'm missing. boost complete nutritional drink has 26 essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium and vitamin d to support strong bones and 10 grams of protein to help maintain muscle. all with a great taste. i don't plan on slowing down any time soon. stay strong. stay active with boost. now try new boost® compact and 100 calories.
2:55 am
2:56 am
we told you about president obama welcoming the canadian prime minister to the white house yesterday. it was a sunny, official welcome in the morning and a warm dinner last night but they couldn't resist throwing a few playful jabs. >> i don't want to gloss over the very real difference -- differences between americans and canadians. there's some things we'll probably never agree on. whose beer is better? who is better at hockey? >> don't get me started. >> where's the stanley cup right now? i'm sorry. is it in my hometown, with the chicago blackhawks?
2:57 am
in case you were wondering, in case you canada yaps were wonder -- canadians were wondering, where is it? >> barack, thank you for what you have done in the last seven years to preserve this relationship. made the special -- may the special connection continue to flourish in the years to come and may my gray hair come not in at a much slower rate than yours has. >> and that does it for me and "way too early." coming up on "morning joe," compared to last week's wild debate the republicans squared off in a surprisingly civil exchange last night. but with ohio and florida on the line next week is this the calm before the storm? "morning joe" is just moments away. so get rid of him. >> we all know the type. those who speak in cliches and think in them.
2:58 am
if your family outing is magical for all the wrong reasons. you may be muddling through allergies. try zyrtec® for powerful allergy relief. and zyrtec® is different than claritin®. because it starts working faster on the first day you take it. try zyrtec®. muddle no more®. at ally bank, no branches equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like vacations equal getting carried away. more proactive selling. what do you think michal? i agree. let's get out there. let's meet these people. they represent blood cells. and if you have afib-an irregular heartbeat that may put you at five times greater risk of stroke they can pool together in the heart, forming a clot that can break free and travel upstream to the brain, where it can block blood flow and cause a stroke. but if you have afib that's not caused by a heart valve problem,
2:59 am
pradaxa can help stop clots from forming. pradaxa was even proven superior to warfarin at reducing the risk of stroke, in a clinical trial without the need for regular blood tests. and, in the rare event of an emergency, pradaxa is the only oral blood thinner other than warfarin with a specific reversal treatment to help your body clot normally again. pradaxa is not for people who have d a heart valve replacement. don't stop taking pradaxa without talking to your doctor. stopping increases your risk of stroke or blood clots ask your doctor if you need to stop pradaxa before any planned medical or dental procedure. pradaxa can cause serious, and sometimes, fatal bleeding. don't take pradaxa if you have abnormal bleeding. and seek immediate medical care for unexpected signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. pradaxa may increase your bleeding risk if you're 75 or older, have kidney problems, stomach ulcers, a bleeding condition, or take certain medicines. side effects with pradaxa can include indigestion, stomach pain, upset or burning. don't just go with the flow. go with pradaxa, the only blood thinner that lowers your risk
3:00 am
of stroke better than warfarin and has a specific reversal treatment. talk to your doctor about pradaxa today. last night you told cnn "islam hates us." did you meet all 1.6 billion muslims? >> i mean a lot of them. i mean a lot of them. >> he says what people wish they could say. the problem, is presidents can't just say anything they want. it has consequences here and around the world. >> the answer is not simply to yell "china bad. muslims bad." you've got to
