with his supporters, we will take you there live when it begins. lots of eyes on ohio and florida. could be do or die with two candidates facing must-win situations. both men for support in their
12:01 pm
home states within the hour. right now the question for their campaigns is whether either of them can topple trump who in the new msnbc news polls is still in the lead. this despite multiple nights of unruly protests and violence at his rallies which trump says the media is blowing out of proportion. >> nobody gets hurt. you listen to the thing. it is almost like these things are death. nobody has been hurt. sometimes we talk a little bit tough. when i see somebody out swinging his fists i say get him the hell out of here and we are a little bit rough. for democrats the polling shows hillary clinton holding on to leads across tuesday's primary states and bernie sanders looking to pull off another midwest upset like he managed in michigan. with two days to go donald trump is leading in florida, illinois, north carolina and missouri. according to a new nbc wall
12:02 pm
street journal poll guv john kasich leads trump in ohio. clashes between trump supporters and protesters continue to escalate at his rallies. in ohio a protester jumped a barrier and rushed trump before being taken down by secret service. trump discussed whether he takes personal responsibility for the escalating violence and addressed whether he will pay legal fees of the 78-year-old man who sucker punched an african-american protester at a north carolina trump rally. >> when they punch it's okay. when my people punch back because they have to out of self defense everybody says isn't that terrible. i will see what was behind this because it was a strange event. from what i heard there was a lot of taunting and a certain finger was placed in the air, not nice. i don't condone the violence. i don't condone what he did. >> it's possible you could help
12:03 pm
him with legal fees if this man needs it? >> i have instructed my people to look into it. >> meanwhile, trump's republican rivals spoke out against the front runner and divisive rhetoric. >> he has turned the most important election in the generation into a circus and to a complete fiasco and a carnival. >> protesters are behaving abusively and wrong. but at the end of the day in any campaign responsibility starts at the top and it is not beneficial when you have a presidential candidate like donald trump telling supporters punch that guy in the face. >> you think i'm going to wallow in the mud with donald trump? i'm not interested in what he says. i'm interested in appealing to his voters. >> joining me now from ohio, what are you hearing from trump supporters in the wake of these incidents?
12:04 pm
>> reporter: trump is expected to be on stage a john kasich style town hall. he is an hour late. we have heard tiny dancer twice. i did get a chance to talk to trump supporters who lined up hours ahead of time. they are out there in the rain. they are worried about the tone that some other supporters are using, the racist comments, derogatory comments. they would like to see donald trump address comments and not only say he is not responsible but say he finds them disgusting. they worry -- a nurse's assistant we spoke to her and she said she is worried that without trump denouncing the comments he will under cut his own campaign. i think the candidate might be coming out. we have a thought in which she comments on what she sees is largest misperception about her candidate. take a listen. -- i'm sorry.
12:05 pm
i don't have that. we don't have that. i will tell you what noel said. it characterizes what many are believing. she said these trump supporters meaning the ones yelling racist commence, these trump supporters are killing our candidate. they want a more pilot way to express opinion. >> thank you very much. in florida senator marco rubio could be on the verge of coming in not second but third in his home state. according to our new nbc news poll donald trump holds a two to one advantage over rubio while senator ted cruz is one point behind rubio at 21%. rubio received a small dose of good news winning the washington, d.c. republican caucus on saturday. the victory marked the florida senator's third win in the presidential race but he remains way behind. heading into tuesday's primary
12:06 pm
rubio is expressing confidence while trying to dispute accuracy of recent polls. >> wednesday morning some pollsteres will have to explain why they are so wrong. i can tell you they have been really wrong. i think in florida especially which is a close primary. that being said, we are going to win in florida. >> joining me now from the villages in florida . what vibe are you getting from the campaign? is it actual confidence or stated confidence? >> reporter: privately the rubio campaign acknowledges it will be tough to move forward. publically they are trying to project this face that they are confident. they are claiming polls. as you mentioned the poll having rubio down by more than 20 points against donald trump and
12:07 pm
showing ted cruz in the mix, as well. he is about to start this rally here in the villages. this is a very compared to donald trump rally much calmer rally. several hundred people. you see the enthusiasm at the rallies. the people here weeks ago when we used to talk to marco rubio supporters talk about electability, something they said over and over again. certainly he had difficulty with victories in the states. now they talk about his moral fiber and how they prefer to have him overstay donald trump. many were disappointed that she got into school yard insults with donald trump saying that was necessary to do because donald trump is a bully. this morning on cnn marco rubio was asked about the atmosphere at these donald trump's rallies and he said he was very concerned that someone could end up losing their life at one of these rallies. let's listen to what else he had to say. >> he has turned the most
12:08 pm
important election in a generation into a circus, complete fiasco and a carnival. >> reporter: and marco rubio will wrap up this rally here at the villages and then he greets volunteers later on today in orlando before chrrisscrossing e state tomorrow. critics say he didn't have enough groundwork to start with. we shall see on tuesday what could be marco rubio's last stand. >> thank you very much. donald trump's divisive rhetoric is blamed for the increased number of violent clashes at his rallies. last week trump started another controversy when he lashed out against muslims. >> i think islam hates us. there is something there that is a tremendous hatred there. we have to get to the bottom of it. there is an unbelievable hatred
12:09 pm
of us. we have to be very vigilant. we have to be very careful and we can't allow people coming into this country who have this hatred of the united states. >> and joining me here on set, twice unone day got your name pretty much right, of the dream defenders. when you hear rhetoric like that what does that do to you and members of the muslim community? >> i think it puts us on notice. the thing that is important to recognize is this rhetoric isn't anything new for america. people were worried about trump's rhetoric driving people to violent action. we have hundreds of years of violent actions towards minorities. when he talked about the good old days and these people we know where it comes from. it is a deep sense of racism in america's history almost as if the racism is a tattoo on our arm and we try to cover it up and try to pull the sleeve down
12:10 pm
and draw things on top to make it more pleasant, until we remove the infrastructure of racism we have problems. >> what do you make on the fact that we are zeroing in on donald trump's rhetoric but polling shows majorities of republican voters, exit polling of all states voting, upwards of 80% and 90% of republican voters agree with the idea of banning muslims from entering the country. there has been rhetoric not just from him but other members of the republican party, a broad belief that barack obama is a secret muslim. is he just whipping up something that was already there? >> it is not just him. he is whipping up something already there. that is why there are people fall oing it. he is not saying something that people are dismissing. people rally behind this stuff and feel emboldened. i feel like the dylan roofs of the world resonate with this.
12:11 pm
>> the republican party right after 9/11, george w. bush made a concerted effort to tamp down that rhetoric. what do you think happened in the republican party? >> it is all about the actions and not just the rhetoric. while george w. bush had nice things to say about islam he started illegal wars that are having us in greater amount of debt and shortage of everything that we need to be fully americans here. the rhetoric is backed up by the actions. if we stop occupying illegal countries and doing these kinds of things we will create a much more peaceful existence. >> you are from the dream defenders. american muslims are black, white, all sort of ethnicities. do you feel the muslim community is stereotyped in terms of who is muslim? >> i'm so proud of my heritage so thank you for mentioning that. there are people that exist at margins of the margins.
12:12 pm
if you are immigrant, black and muslim you have story of our three brothers. executed, forgotten about. it is because they exist at all three margins where no one seems to care. >> i have seen it from dream defenders and larger movement. there does seem to be a convergence with people defending american muslims and arab americans. donald trump's rally let's listen in. >> i like john. he's a nice guy but he said did you see some of trump's speeches. i haven't sea breeze them. he is the only person in america
12:13 pm
that hasn't seen them. so did you see them? no. i don't really watch television. when i watch television i only watch golf channel. i don't watch the news. wait a minute, we all like golf channel, too. you are run frg president. the only thing you watch is golf channel. so he's not going to do the job. not going to do the job. we have so many problems with this country. we have so many problems. we are going to make this country so great and strong. we are going to build up our military [ cheers and applause ] we are not going to use the military. we are not going to have to use our military hopefully, but nobody is going to mess with us. we are going to take care of our vets. the vets are very important. they are great people. we have to take care of our vets, right? these are great, great people. thank you. i love that sign. look at that beautiful sign. thank you. that's incredible. i tell this story and it is sort of an amazing story.
12:14 pm
a very, very good friend of mine is a very successful guy. he always hears about how many people you are speaking about i say 21,000 people in dallas, 35,000 people a couple of weeks ago in alabama. he said how do you do that? i said i don't really know and i'm not a big note person. i don't read speeches because i don't like to. it is easy to read speeches but you want to put everyone to sleep read speeches. you can't comment on things like golf channel with kasich with golf channel because you don't put that in the speech because it is too current. i just heard it a couple of hours ago. he said how do you do it? there is such love in the stadiums and these rooms and there is such love they took this room just very quickly because we wanted to come up here and say hello. i used to work in cincinnati. it's true. queen city. i love cincinnati.
12:15 pm
but i work here and i tell the story. i wrote about it -- >> we will continue to monitor this trump rally to see if anything occurs. for now let us turn to the democrats. new polls out today show that hillary clinton has a sizable lead over bernie sanders across all of tuesday's primary states. we will break down the numbers and discuss what it will take for the vermont senator to catch up, after a break. thank you. imagine if the things you bought every day... ...earned you miles to get to the places you really want to go. with the united mileageplus explorer card, you'll get a free checked bag, two united club passes, priority boarding, and 30,000 bonus miles. everything you need for an unforgettable vacation. the united mileageplus explorer card. imagine where it will take you. staying in rhythm... it's how i try to live... how i stay active.

12:18 pm
moments ago a disruption at the donald trump rally. let's take a listen to what is going on at that rally.
12:19 pm
[ chanting trump ] >> well, it adds excitement, doesn't it, folks. >> now familiar scene at a donald trump rally where a bernie sanders supporter held up a sign was escorted out. you heard the chants of trump, trump, trump as the protester was escorted out. we will continue to monitor the rally for further developments and bring that live. hillary clinton and bernie sanders are in the hunt for ohio's 93 democratic delegates. >> reporter: good afternoon. secretary clinton and senator sanders locked in a competitive battle particularly in the wake of sanders surprise win in michigan.
12:20 pm
clinton campaign officials say she will aggressively stress her message on trade and manufacturing. secretary clinton call frg stiffer trade restrictions for auto makers and touted her plans to include manufacturing sector to improve jobs. they think senator sanders has been successful at touting those types of themes that are resonating. senator sanders continuing to hit clinton hard on the issue of trade criticizing her for supporting past trade deals like nafta which many say cost a lot of jobs. take a listen to what he had to say. >> when millions of workers have lost their jobs in this country because of disastrous trade policies we are seeing the race to the bottom where wages are going down in manufacturing in many parts of the country you bet i will make that a major bone of contention and a disagreement that hillary clinton and i have. >> reporter: the clinton
12:21 pm
campaign pushes back against that argument saying that clinton has called for renegotiation and said she is not going to support trade deals moving forward that would cost jobs. this all comes as we are getting a snapshot of the race. let's take a look one more time. she leads him 61% to 34%. ohio tops his 58% to 38%. illinois she leads 51% to 45%. so very tight race. both campaigns think it will get even tighter as we head into tuesday. the reality of this, the math even if senator sanders were to win some midwestern states secretary clinton could increase delegate lead if she wins florida and north carolina. she has former president bill clinton and daughter chelsea clinton. if senator sanders has a strong
12:22 pm
standing on tuesday that could boost his momentum. >> kristin welker thank you very much. joining me here on set is oscar brainen. you voted? >> i stood in line. >> how was the turnout? >> a nice long line at early voting today. in african-american community which is where i early voted sundays before elections are big. i went to church and then went to vote. a bunch of people did the same thing. it was a long line. >> there is a running narrative about the clinton campaign that they are taking a lot for granted. they went in light in terms of number of offices and staff. got an upset loss to bernie sanders. is the same thing happening here? is the clinton campaign robust enough in florida to take the big polling lead for granted? >> we have to say senator sanders worked hard in michigan.
12:23 pm
he worked very hard in michigan. i think here they have been working. they have been on the ground for quite a few months now energizing people like myself, people who have had a relationship with the clintons dating back to when president clinton was there. we have been motivated. i believe that there is going to be a strong showing especially in my community for secretary clinton. >> why do you suppose a sanders message which hits on jobs and economic disparity that are commonly heard. why wouldn't that message resonate in florida? >> i don't think it is the message. it's the delivery and can this person really deliver that? i watched "saturday night live" last night and it is a true joke. he is saying a lot of things we want to hear. do we think he can do it. when we look at secretary clinton and her background these people delivered on the things he is talking about. >> are you concerned as a clinton supporter that the
12:24 pm
campaign has essentially damaged her? you hear sanders supporters refer to her as dishonest, as the establishment and sort of paint her in the light that is difficult to undo in the fall campaign. do you think she is going into a fall campaign damaged in. >> i think that what is going to happen is -- this is really the test. when we get to the fall campaign he will be running against somebody with an extreme view and people will ignore things like an e-mail scandal which most people in my community don't know what you are talking about. they see the clintons as people who led us to a prosperity time in the '90s. that's what they see. they are not focussed on things that i guess you can say that senator sanders is talking about. >> you referenced the '90s. young voters don't remember the '90s. they remember the great recession of 2008. how does hillary clinton
12:25 pm
energize the people bernie sanders is attracting. >> she was a part of president obama's cabinet. >> you think president obama is enough? >> she is talking about continuing things that president obama has done. we are talking about someone in senator sanders one of the reasons his poll numbers look so low who thought about that the president should be -- these things are resonating. there may be people on the fringes who believe we need to go a completely different direction. other people believe the country is headed in the right direction. >> in general, are black voters enthused about the campaign or is it sort of a low in terms of african-american excitement? >> i believe we are excited. we are excited because we have all been excited about the clintons. you saw in illinois is the prospect of president trump.
12:26 pm
>> state senator oscar branyon. very proud of you. >> on a.m. radio. >> back in our radio days. well done. what's it like to take on donald trump -- what is it like on the donald trump beat? our correspondents have a unique perspective of what it is like to follow the front runner on the campaign trail. coming up, bernie sanders fires back at donald trump defending his supporters against the republican front runners claims that sanders supporters are behind latest round of protests that spark violence at donald trump rallies. you are watching msnbc. felite.m and with safelite's exclusive "on my way text" she knew exactly when i'd be there. so she didn't miss a single shot. 12:29 pm
this was the scene moments ago as a bernie sanders supporter interrupted donald trump's rally in westchester, ohio. it followed a contentious scene last night at a rally in kansas city. let's start with tony. tell us what the atmosphere is
12:30 pm
like and what happened during the protest. >> reporter: five minutes into the speech the protester stood up. one person had a bernie sign and one twa trump sign. the trump sign torn in two. trump paused, focuses on the protester. he is skilled and experienced at dealing with them saying it is a lot of fun. his talent is not matched by the tone of the audience. the protesters went all the way up to the stage where trump is surrounded by ten officers and yelled trump is a fascist before getting booted out of here. one interruption which is a little offpace from trump's rallies in recent days. >> you have been talking about some of the racial aspects of some of what you are hearing people yelling. is that the case again today? was it the case today? >> reporter: not this time. it's important to point out the
12:31 pm
two protesters were white. one suspects they were other than white it could have been a different tone. one protester outside responded directly to trump's pledge yesterday to start arresting protesters and put them in jail and quote ruining their lives. a man from birmingham, alabama said arrest me anytime, it is too important to stop this man. it is worth it. i would be willing to be thrown in jail. >> let's go to tramaine lee. talk about what happened last night in kansas city and what you just heard from tony, does that track what you experienced last night? >> reporter: here in kansas city came on the heels of two really rough days in terms of the donald trump rallies, one in st. louis where folks nearly came to blows. 32 arrests. chicago we saw the mayhem that
12:32 pm
his events sparked. here there was a literal divide here on main street that separated protesters and the supporters. i think one thing that was clear from the beginning is that there was both sides. protesters certainly angry and frustrated with what they believe is a campaign fraught with toxicity, racism. the supporters chanting usa in response and build that wall. and then when you go inside the rallies you hear the response from the crowd as donald trump eggs them on to get people out of here. he points to folks and say they didn't make america great. one thing interesting here as volatile as it was it didn't turn to violence there were moments where the police sprayed pepper spray into the crowd to push some protesters back but you also saw some dialogue in the most positive sense but also angry words being shouted back and forth. still the divide was evident.
12:33 pm
i think we have sound from last night. let's take a listen to what a few supporters and a few protesters had to say. >> i never heard him say any negative comments about anybody other than the media, politicians and terrorists. so which group do you fall in there? >> 63-year-old retired man thanks to president obama and his policies. i would be more than happy to go to jail to combat this foolishness. >> reporter: i think that is the thing that we have seen play out time and time again. not just often the physical divide separating these groups but their political divide where protesters can see what they believe is the very volatile rhetoric feeding raceicism in this country. on the support side some of them are just supporting donald trump and he has been their voice in so many ways.
12:34 pm
>> msnbc's tramaine lee, thank you very much. let's move on to the democrats. bernie sanders has been addressing questions about the recent violence at trump rallies involving some supporters of his campaign. here is senator talking with reverend al sharpton this morning. >> we have never, never once told anybody to do anything like that. the truth is this guy really is a pathological liar. he says the first thing that comes to his mind. i guess he is referring to me as a communist. i think it is terribly important that trump tell his supporters that in america you don't go around beating up people who are protesting or will have a different point of view. he has to start changing his rhetoric and not blame other people for the problems that he is causing. >> joining me now from chicago is simone sanders, national press secretary for sanders
12:35 pm
campaign. >> how are you today? >> i'm wonderful. thank you. good to talk to you. is it helpful or harmful to your campaign to have bernie sanders become essentially the boil for donald trump? >> senator sanders said that our campaign is not sending anyone in to protest donald trump's rallies. i'm confused about why folks are acting like not part of the american political system. it is not effecting us negatively. senator sanders said this campaign is about bringing people together. we don't support hateful rhetorics. folks are standing up against the violent language and atmosphere that donald trump and his campaign have created. so i think i am going to echo what the senator said this morning. i think what needs to happen is that donald trump and his campaign, they have to take control and they have to
12:36 pm
denounce this hateful rhetoric and denounce the violence. it is unacceptable for what is happening at those rallies to happen and that is just what needs to happen. >> and what do you make of what amounts to a threat by donald trump to start sending his supporters to bernie sanders rallies? >> well, you know, you can't believe everything that comes out of donald trump's mouth. donald trump is a pathological liar. we are not worried about donald trump. we are going to continue to focus on the issues. we have lots of primary elections coming up on tuesday. we want totalk to the american people about the issues most important to them. the folks here in chicago when the senator was in chicago they wanted to talk about the struggle for equity in chicago public schools. they wanted to talk about the fact that these free trade agreements devastated communities like chicago. they wanted to talk about addressing criminal justice reform and ending mass
12:37 pm
incarceration. those are things we are going to continue to talk about. we are not worried about donald trump but focussed on the american people and communicating and speaking with them and earning their vote on tuesday. >> so you don't think the campaign might or is the campaign not preparing to add additional security at rallies? we have seen what happens at the trump rallies. if he is saying he is sending people to sanders rallies doesn't that call for response or step up security? >> i will not discuss security matters of the campaign on national television. i will tell you our campaign is about bringing people together. our campaign is not about dividing people, pitting people against one another like the trump campaign. we are focussed on the issues and we look forward to hosting many more rallies. the senator is hitting a lot of stops between now and tuesday. we look forward to our supporters coming out to rallies to hear what senator sanders has to say. he is speaking to life and death issues that every day americans care about.
12:38 pm
>> which states will sanders wip by enough of a margin to start closing the delegate gap? >> i don't want to jinx it but we think we can do well on tuesday in north carolina. we think we will do well in illinois. we will do well in a couple of nominating contests, missouri. we have been focussed on meetic voters where they are, deep diving into communities when the senator is not on the ground our campaigns are running excellent ground games. we are intentional on getting wins on tuesday. this is not a winner take all in the democratic nominating contest. you win some and lose some. there is a path to the nomination for us. we will close that gap. there are 50 states and there is a lot more elections to go. >> simone sanders. thank you very much. joining me now here on set is leslie what the ground game
12:39 pm
and strategy is. she didn't mention florida among states. what do you think of that in. >> i think that senator sanders can win florida. >> how does he do that? >> i think that he needs to step up his outreach. i think that all candidates need to step up outreach. one of my complaints with candidates is that they don't engage the african-american community the way that they should. with both the republicans and the democrats. i think that the african-american community is overlooked. you have one party that completely ignores us and the republicans and then another party that completely takes us for granted. >> is there a danger in the sanders campaign because he is doing so poorly with black voters to begin writing off the black vote and really going right for white working-class voters at the expense of african-american voters? >> i think that it goes deeper than just the sanders campaign.
12:40 pm
i think with the clinton campaign she has name recognition. i think that the sanders campaign, clinton campaign need to engage the african-american community more. you can't say with the clinton campaign because we have name recognition we will come during election time and say vote for us because you know who we are. >> what does real engagement look like? >> what it looks like is going into the black media and saying we want to engage you. it says we are going to hire black political consultants. we will come into your community not just at election time. we are not going to come to your churches and engage you at that point. we will not just go to elected officials and say we want you to endorse us. we you are going to put forth the effort and go into the black community and engage everybody. you are going to come in and let people know we care about you. we are not just going to guy to your leaders. gone are the days where we are
12:41 pm
going to listen to what elected officials say or our leaders. we know how to do our research. we read. we google. we know what is going on. we are an informed community. we are not just going to say my leader says this so that is what we are going to do. we are going to read and engage. we are an informed community. we go by what we see and what we research. >> i have been hearing the same thing since back in the day working on the political side. african-americans have been complaining about the lack of engagement, showing up at the 11th hour and going into black churches. why do you suppose it hasn't changed? >> i think because we haven't made it change. we have to take some of the blame ourselves. take african-american women. we make up 70% of registered voters. that far exceeds any demographic. >> the turnout was 72%. we have to hold people accountable. we can't just say you can come in and treat us any kind of way.
12:42 pm
take for instance democratic african-american women caucus. we have to hold these people accountable. we can't say you treat us this way and we still vote for you and let you do anything you want to do and say it is okay. it is not okay. we have to hold the people accountable or vote them out of office. >> leslie williams of the democratic black women's caucus here in florida good to see you. still to come, voters weigh in. we are live along the i-4 corridor in florida where there is no shortage of opinion on the 2016 race. calperry will join us with that after this. at's where your friends are. seriously, it's, it's really fine. you don't want to be seen with your dad? no, it's..no.. this about a boy? dad! stop, please. oh, there's tracy. what! talking to voters. what have you been hearing about senator marco rubio and the other candidates? >> reporter: first, this is an incredibly large voting group. imagine about 6,000 people come from the island of puerto rico hoohere in florida. we are talking about 700,000 votes and in a close election that could swing it either way. we spent the morning talking to rafael, a community organizer trying to get the voting bloc organized. we asked him about marco rubio and he expressed serious disappointment in the florida senator. >> there have been multiple meetings in the past two years with marco rubio but we haven't been able to get his support for chapter 9. people don't trust him anymore. you wonder what side is he in.
12:47 pm
>> reporter: chapter 9 is that protection from what is massive debt from the island of puerto rico for so many of these folks enjoying dinner and live music. they have been telling us the trump message is going to let them leap frog the primary. so many are not going to vote in the primary but wait for the general election. not good news for marco rubio down in the polls. we are hearing that donald trump is going to skip rallies planned here for florida and stick to ohio. it seems like an obvious strategy when he is up as much as he is up. 700,000 voters. seems like the consensus choice is hillary clinton. we have been told by the community here she is a known quantity. we are talking about issues known to puerto rico and families split living here and on the island. a huge voting bloc that is up in the air for grabs should be key moving forward. >> just really quickly the beltway wisdom on marco rubio

and ted cruz and them being hispanic somehow will make them more attractive candidates to latino voters. it doesn't sound like that is what you are hearing. >> reporter: no. it's what have you done for me lately? you have tough vote for marco rubio on the peninsula about the bp spill. ted cruz is not really a known quantity here in florida. it is what have you done for me lately and not a lot done on the issue of immigration. donald trump thing is a no brainer. the wall going up here is not playing out well in the community. people are looking at hillary clinton as a good option. >> msnbc's cal perry. still to come, what young voters want. democrats pulling out the stops to track the millennial vote. saturday night live may be helping interest among the key voting group. speaking of trump he is on track to become the republican

"saturday night live" didn't pull any punches in its latest commercial parody. last night's show "snl" took aim at hillary clinton and the millennial vote. >> so thank you, millennials, for lending your support to the biggest outsider jew in the race, hillary rodham clinton. there is a lot of work to be done, and that is why i am sick and tired of hearing about my own damn e-mails. >> this message was paid for by mi hillary clinton. feel the bern for her. >> i'm whoever you want me to be. i'm trying here, guys. >> that's a pretty good joke. hillary clinton is poised for a strong tuesday. the new nbc news/"wall street

journal journal"/marist poll has clinton leading with big leads while illinois is shaping up to be a bit tighter. let's talk about the state of the race. joining me is yahoo! news national correspondent holly daley. >> glad to be here. >> let's talk about the democrats. illinois being the one that's the tightest. sort of ironic because hillary clinton is, of course, a native of illinois. bernie sanders has roots there too having gone to the university of chicago. >> i think, you know, there's a lot of college kids, younger voters, and especially around chicago that is really appealing to bernie sanders people. but i also just think just generally this has been a tougher than expected race for hillary clinton and she's having to sort of fight everywhere she goes and so, i mean, i think illinois is just sort of reflective of that. >> and ohio, how significant is it that bernie sanders who filed a separate lawsuit from a local civil rights organization sued the secretary of state there and won the right for 17-year-olds to vote.
12:54 pm
you're allowed to vote if you're 17 but you will be 18 by election day. how significant does that wind up being for him? >> i think that could be really significant honestly. part of his base are these younger voters. hillary clinton has had a hard time locking up the youth vote and it's sort of surprising. her campaign started appealing that way. one of her first stops was at a community college where she was surrounded by younger voters but she's struggled to sort of present that, you know, that campaign as being a person that could be hopeful and -- >> do you believe any of these polls that show hillary clinton with big leads? because she had a big polling lead in michigan. >> well, i always judge after covering many presidential campaigns, i judge how a campaign feels by where they're going and her schedule is packed. you know, and she's staying around the midwest. not really been down here in florida very much. the fact she has a rigorous schedule, where she's going suggests she's worried.

>> you have ted cruz, kasich, and rubio making the same case, any vote for the other two is a vote for donald trump. is any of them having more traction than the others because they surely are not doing the one thing which everyone says they should, which is two of them drop out and consolidate. >> it doesn't look like anything is changing. everyone is talking about florida and this may be marco rubio's last stand and that sort of thing. and then he's not creeding grou. >> if marco rubio loses florida but kasich wins ohio could anybody have imagined that maybe the guy with the staying power in the race is john kasich? >> not really. but as he's focused his campaign so narrowly, if you think back to 2008, rudy giuliani tried to do the sort of florida strategy. >> one delegate.
12:56 pm
>> and he basically focused all his energies on a single state, and that didn't work out for him but this is such a crazy campaign here, and it's like every little delegate counts and that's, you know, what's happening. >> are republicans that you're talking with looking forward to the convention or are they dreading it? >> off the record people are very nervous about what's going to happen, especially, you know, with the tenor of the campaign and the way these rallies have been lately, especially on the trump side. no one wants to see that sort of thing happen at the convention floor. >> i think it's a pretty good bet if they're in cleveland and it's donald trump, there will be more of this. so it's going to be a fascinating, interesting convention. thank you very much. really appreciate it, holly. thank you for being here. that does do it for this hour. i'm joy reid coming to you from lovely miami. my colleague chris jansing picks it up from here. live coverage from lakewood, ohio, right after this. how busy your life can be. oh no this mom didn't have time to worry about a cracked windshield. so she scheduled at safelite.com

good afternoon. i'm chris jansing coming to you live from lakewood, ohio, where things have gotten very interesting on the republican side of this presidential race. a sign that donald trump's attempt to create an air of inevitability may be headed to a road block. a new nbc news poll has john kasich with a 6-point lead over donald trump. trump still holds the commanding lead in florida and is also on top in illinois. and while things have been relatively calm at trump's events today, this video shows protesters being kicked out of the bloomington, illinois, one, welcomed by other protesters outside the building. >> they treated me like i was some kind of, you know, some kind of bad person. they told me racist things. they called me a parasite. they told me get a job and then they basically kicked me out. >> and the controversy
