tv   First Look  MSNBC  March 16, 2016 2:00am-2:31am PDT

2:00 am
it's wednesday, march 16th. right now on "first look" a clean sweet for hillary clinton and donald trump gets closer to the nomination. john kasich lives to fight another day, but not for marco rubio who launches this parting shot on mr. trump. >> america needs a vibe rant conservative movement, but one that's build on principles and ideas. not on fear. not on anger. not on preying on people's frustrations. severe weather in various parts of the country including historic flooding and incredibly violent looking skies above.
2:01 am
for the first time in 40 years the washington, d.c., metro trains are closed. and a hero cop saves a life. and ronda rousey's surprise announcement. "first look" starts right now. well, good morning. i'm betty nguyen. another primary tuesday, another big night for donald trump. and even bigger one for hillary clinton. trump dominated in florida, winning by nearly 20% and after getting crushed in his home state, marco rubio suspended his campaign. >> but after tonight it is clear that while we are on the right side, this year, we will not be on the winning side. while it is not god's plan that i be president in 2016 or maybe ever, and while today my campaign is suspended, the fact that i have ever even this far is evidence of how special america truly is.
2:02 am
>> governor john kasich had a big win taking his home state of ohio along with all the delegates in this winner take all contest. also his first victory this season. trump took north carolina in a close one over ted cruz. kasich follows in third. trump with a slightly bigger victory over cruz in illinois. it's interesting to note voting was spuntuspended in parts of t state for the tornado threat. and trump is an apparent win in missouri with cruz less than 2,000 votes separating the two. it was a clean sweep for hillary clinton. she dominated in florida. nearly doubling the amount of votes bernie sanders received. clinton had a surprise victory in ohio which is a setback for sanders who predicted victory in the state. clinton won handily in north carolina. 121 delegates up for grabs there. for much of the race, the race in illinois was too close to call, but clinton is now the apparent winner. and a similar story in missouri
2:03 am
where clinton narrowly edged out sanders by roughly 1,500 votes. in her victory speech, clinton pivoted to the general election and upped her attacks against trump. >> we are moving closer to securing the democratic party nomination and winning this election in november. when we hear a candidate for president call for rounding up 12 million immigrants, banning all muslims from entering the united states, when he embraces torture that doesn't make him strong. it makes him wrong. >> clinton picked up 363 delegates to sanders 282. increasing her overall lead. there are still 46 delegates remaining to be allocated from tuesday mostly from florida and illinois.
2:04 am
john kasich picked up 75 delegates, 66 from ohio. speaking from his home state, he urged pundits to not count him out just yet. >> you better -- you better believe it's about america. it's about pulling us together. not pulling us apart. it is about usa. >> even though i labored in obscurity for so long, people counting me out, but we put one foot in front the other, and i want to remind you again tonight that i will not take the low road to the highest office in the land. >> now, kasich still has a long way to go and is mathematically unable to secure enough delegates before the convention. meanwhile, though, trump was able to increase his total over the field edging closer to the 1,237 needed for the nomination.
2:05 am
>> most people said i'll never run. he's just going to have fun. he's having a good time. this isn't necessarily -- i mean, i'm having a good time. you know, i'm having a very nice time, but you know what, i'm working very hard and there is great anger. believe me. there is great anger. they're not angry people. but they want to see the country properly run. they want to see borders. they want to see good health care. they want to see things properly taken care of. they want our military rebuilt very, very importantly and they want the second amendment by the way protected and protected strongly. and that's going to happen. and you know what they want so badly? they want our veterans taken care of. i just said we're going to go forward and we're going to win. but more importantly we're going to win for the country. we're going to win, win, win, we're not stopping. we'll have great victories for our country. >> what a night it was. political analyst and best selling author ellis henican is
2:06 am
joining us right now. >> he looks like he's having fun at mar-a-lago. >> he's having a blast with some of the returns coming in. let me ask you this, let's take us back to marco rubio. he's going to keep ongoing and going, but he suspended his campaign last night. were you surprised? >> aye, a little bit. he said he'd keep going no matter what. i think he figured he didn't have much of a choice. >> let's look at this. so he's out. kasich wins in his home state. right, which means that according to his math, he could possibly win a brokered convention. now, does that add up to you? >> well, to this extent, i think it's quite possible that donald trump still won't get that 1,237 delegates he needs to win on the first ballot. so the rules are complicated, each state handles it down differently. yes, it's possibly we'll go to
2:07 am
cleveland in july not knowing -- >> how possible -- >> not as slim as you might think. trump has many advantages and it's always been a mistake to underestimate what he can achieve. but there are an awful lot of republican leaders who don't want him to be the nominee. >> that's interesting too. because you are seeing this force behind all of this -- i guess this fever pitch around not getting trump in there. >> looking for somebody. >> yeah. but okay, so they go to the brokered convention. but donald trump doesn't get the exact number needed, they go to the brokered convention and they don't come one trump as the guy that they want. right? that being the case, is that going to upset the voters out there? >> well, just think about it. if you were a staunch trump supporter, your guy is at the top. you have done this hugely successful primary campaign and he doesn't get the nomination, the people will be angry. will he become a third party candidate? it will be wild.
2:08 am
>> it could be disarray. >> i don't know. >> boy, this is an exciting election season. all right, big night for hillary clinton. >> yep. >> as she swept the primaries. >> she did. >> what does this mean for bernie sanders at this point? >> it's a -- it's pretty -- one would say it's all but impossible for bernie sanders. right? the momentum he got out of michigan. the midwest miracle did not materialize. he had a couple of close calls but not looking too good for bernie. >> check out the numbers. exit polling shows this. a majority of republican voters want a ban on muslims entering the country. look at the numbers right there, all in the 60 percentile. does that surprise you? >> you know, that large does surprise me a little bit. we have known that there are a core of americans who feel very strongly on that issue. but yeah, that's a big number. it will be interesting, betty, to see whether it holds once the election becomes a general election. where democrats and independents are part of that number. it won't be 60, but it might be
2:09 am
larger than we think. >> that plays into trump's hands. >> that's his biggest and central issue. >> as get closer and we look forward to all of the other primaries -- i mean, we have a lot to go. it's not over yet. >> we're not done with it. >> are we going to see a lot of these endorsements start to roll out and will they make a difference? >> well, yes, they'll roll out. i have to tell you, this year there is no evidence that any endorsements are made -- have made a difference. people vote for or against the candidates themselves. >> cut and dried themselves. >> good to see you. welcome back. >> good to be back. thanks, ellis. now to the historic flooding in the south. the torrential rain has just ended but the disaster from rising floodwaters is far from over. and in deweyville, texas, 1,200 people were ordered to evacuate as the sabine river overflowed the banks. the damage is catastrophic. the health clinic, church and police station all hard hit by that flooding. meanwhile, storm chasers captured a tornado that touched
