sheriff there. >> that said, though, even though he is in arizona for this event this afternoon and this other one tonight, ted cruz is not expecting to win arizona on tuesday his campaign says he is supposed to get no delegates t. man who is expected to win all 58 of those arizona delegates, will apparently be on stage momentarily in utah. donald trump is speaking in utah this hour. utah also votes at the same time as arizona, utah and arizona both vote on tuesday. utah has a republican presidential caucus. arizona's is a primary. at tonight's donald trump's event in salt lake city, people started lining up to get into this thing, hours beforehand, most of the people that lined up hours in advance were there in support of donald trump. as of right now, though, about 200 anti-donald trump protestors have showed up at this same

event. so we'll keep an eye on those protests as the donald trump event rolls on this hour. ohio governor john kasich campaigned in utah today. john kasich, i don't mean anything by it, but he is generally seen as having next to no chance of winning in utah. ted cruz is the favorite in the utah caucuses. but it's interesting the utah caucuses cannot necessarily winner takes all. it appears john kasich's strategy in the state of utah to try to keep it close there, to get some delegates out of the state of utah f. john kasich can keep ted cruz below a 50% finish, all other candidates in the race, john kasich and donald trump, they could each get a share of utah's 40 delegates. if the 1st placed winner in that state gets 50%, though, it would be winner take all. here's what we were saying about utah's republican caucus, though. you think of a caucus that they

met is slightly more onerous as an act of democracy than a prime ar him you have to go and show up. the caucus is going on, which is usually a shorter period than the length the polls are opened for the primary. you have to physically klet your caucus to information and listen to speeches and enter act with other humans while are you there t. caucus is a heavier lift than a primary. that's the way it goes in most states. it's not true about what is going to happen in utah. utah republicans this year can caucus online. really? yes. this is just republican, not democrats. republicans had to register by midnight last night. 14 one rejs sterk online if you that you, by mid-fight, they got a secret pin number, apparently, they're supposed to be caucus from the comfort of tear pjs on tuesday with an ipad, propped up on the old beer belly. calls it the biggest such experiment in the united states in years. now, mitt romney lived in utah now. i don't know if he will be voteing from his pjs at home or if he'll go to his caucus site in person or absentee. i'm not sure, but former republican presidential nominee, mitt romney today tweeted he will be voting in utah and specifically for ted cruz in the utah caucus on tuesday. ever the bold mover and shaker, mr. romney insists the does not mean he is endorsing ted cruz for president. he said on facebook, he wants it known he is voting for ted cruz in order to get an open convention this summer. he is voting for him. he is not endorsing him. courage. on the democratic side, today, bernie sanders held or is currently holding three events in all three states that will be voting on the democratic side tuesday, mr. sanders started off the day by bringing out a 3,000

strong crowd in the reddest of red states. idaho. he followed that up with a massive rally of over 10,000 people in salt lake city, utah, this afternoon. wow. that's a big outdoor crowd for bernie sanders. he is currently getting ready to address another large crowd in tucson, arizona. so it's been a very busy day on the bernie sanders campaign trail. lots of events today and into late tonight, this friday night. >> that said, you may have noticed there is one presidential candidate i have not mentioned in this run down, that is hillary clinton. former secretary of state hillary clinton has not held public events since tuesday night when she swept bernie sanders in five states. secretary clinton will not hold another public event until monday. that's one, two, three, four, five full days off the trail, right in the middle of primary season. it doesn't mean there is anything wrong, though. it just means the clinton campaign is pursuing a different strategy t. reason she is taking

all the time away from current events is she is currently fundraisinging like a freaking jug you are knot. she held two big dollar fund raisers in georgia and tennessee yesterday. she held two more in connecticut and virginia today, taking basically five days off the campaign trail the do no public events, instead to raise tons of money. that tells you where this contest is becoming right now. what is becoming the dominant obsession in this race, though, particularly on the republican side is the prospect that in front runner donald trump doesn't win by big enough margins in enough states to secure enough delegates by the time the convention starts in cleveland this summer, the rest of the republican party and some it rakes or another, they may use that convention process not to ratify the fact that donald trump won most of the primaries and caucuses, instead, there will be an organized effort through the manipulation of the rules and old faxed organizing and persuasion to basically give

the nomination to someone else other than donald trump. whether or not it's one of the oitself candidates who this year has been rung against donald trump. all right. this is not news to you. you know, this is the prospect that everyone is obsessed with right now. interestingly, bernie sanders last night on this show raised the prospect it may happen on the democratic side as well. the thing people are really focused on is not just the prospect, but the likelihood it will happen on the republican side. i think the reason that people are talking about it so much is in part because it's an exciting prospect. right? it involves an element of suspense. it's also novel. it would be something we haven't seen in american politics in a long, long, long time. way back in the day, sure, way back in the day before we really had a nation wide system of primaries and caucuses, people expected that the political conventions would be where the nominees were picked. that used to be the way it was. it hasn't been that way in a very, very long time, certainly

not in the last generation. so it feels like we're about to do something we haven't seen since the old days, since back in the day when presidents had beards. but it turns out, it's not really an act rat perception. and i'm not shuai talking 1976 and stuff that happened in the '60s and reagan versus ford. i'm not talking about that. ever since this national excitement has started building around what's going to happen at the republican convention this summer. eever since people started about how unprecedented that might be ever since that had mittedly discussion started, we have been looking forward to telling this story we will tell in a special report tonight. while conventions in recent years, mostly from the outside look like infomercials, like slickly produced tv shows designed to showcase all theifies things about whoever the pre ordained candidate is. while it looks like that on the

surface, there actually has been a huge amount of under the radar skull duggery at the conventions, even if recent years, even if really recent years. a everyone the last time we had a convention him it happened in a concerted and dramatic way in 2012 when the republican party nominated mitt romney. at the surface, the convention appeared to be a fairly placid process, mitt romney, seamlessly and theatrically became the nominee and got stumped by barack obama in the general. just under the palace it surface of that convention and the nominating process overall, there really was chaos and controversy and screaming fits, and police action and actual violence. and i should mention what appear to be cheating and certainly swearing. people were arrested. people were injured and it is a credit to the romney campaign that we were able to keep most

of this off the news and out of the major headlines for the nominating process. but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. we got that story next. does it? is it becoming a better professor by being a more adventurous student? is it one day giving your daughter the opportunity she deserves? is it finally witnessing all the artistic wonders of the natural world? whatever your definition of success is, helping you pursue it, is ours. t-i-a-a. without objection, the slate is on the table. >> i'm not sure it's totally clear the ayes have that one and not the nos. >> that wasn't nearly the start of it. >> that came at the end of a long series of loud raucous occasionally violent signs that something was going on, beneath the nominating mitt romney for president ordeal in 2012. the des moines register having to break it to iowa voters, even though the iowa caucuses were supposedly won and a few days later they were a tie, in the end, des moines register columnist had to tell her readers, actually, you want to know who won? it was ron paul. here was fox news at the time, ron paul wins 21 of 25 delegates elected in iowa.

the reason we have primaries and caucuses is to wyndel gather who then themselves vote to pick a party nominee at the convention t. ron paul campaign won a lot of delegates in 2012. they did that in i, what across the country. the trick is, they fixed out a way to do that without winning the primaries and the caucuses t. ron paul campaign in 2012, they ran a whole shadow campaign to get delegates for ron paul. after the vote if multiple states, but before the convention. that is the same thing that is going on right now in republican politics again. this time it's not ron paul. this time, this is the strategy the rest of the republican party is trying to organize against donald trump right now. it's just that ron paul is the one that showed them how to do it. when the ron paul campaign did it, it did notened we end well. ron paul lost the louisiana primary in 2012. he didn't lose by a hair.

congressman ron paul lost the state of louisiana by a full head of hair and a beard. rick santorum got prine% of the vote. then newt gingrich. then ron paul, 4th place, single digits. a measly 6% of the vote. that's what jeb bush used to call a jackpot. honestly, that is a terrible showing. in louisiana in 2012, a 6% was precisely zero delegates or so everyone thought. every state party picks its delegates by slightly different means and louisiana in 2012, it turns out they had a primary and then a caucus. a caucus nobody seemed to pay attention to, except for mr. 6%, ron paul. at this low key ho hum, nobody is paying attention, bureaucratic process, roen paul supporters ma offered no into ma joerts, they got themselves 12

delegates for ron paul. even though everybody who thought they watched the louisiana contest on tv thought they saw ron paul lose there, they did. everybody thought he would get no delegates out of louisiana because of that. no, it turns out actually he got a bunch actually wait, there was more. through the rules of that caucus, which no other campaign really paid attention to, the paul campaign was then able to select an additional five delegates, which brought their total to 17, so at this point in the process, despite getting 4th place, 6% of the vote in the louisiana primary, trounced by both rick santorum and mitt romney and newt gingrich, too, ron paul entered the louisiana state convention with the most delegates of any of the candidates running for president that year. >> that is when things went completely off the rails to the point of arrests and broken bones. the state convention in louisiana is where they were

supposed to come up with their list of exactly who, which people would represent the state at the big national republican convention if tampa that summer. shortly after that state convention kicked off, a ron paul supporter positioned to remove the state party chairman. when that motion was ignored, the man continued to protest. then he was dragged out by security. it was reported at the time that in that process, some of the man's fingers were broken. there are local news reports of him returning later on with, indeed, his fingers splinted. so the ron paul delegates who thought they had rightfully taken over the party through the rules and the magic of showing up, not leaving, they decided at that state convention, after that whole frauk cuss they would stay in the room but turn their chairs around 180 degrees and hold their own state republican convention at the other ends of the same room where the other republicans were. so the other republicans are holding what they thought was their state republican convention t. ron paul are

holding what they think is their state convention. they're all in the same room at the same time at the shreveport convention center. they faced opposite directions. one side has their chairman running their convention t. other side elected their chairman to oversee their convention. maybe it could have gone on like that forever. parallel universes next to each other in the same room, then the ron paul convention people gave their chairman the microphone and then security rushed him. >> after all that, after the broken fingers, the bad hip the i need a doctor, i need a doctor, the ron paul campaign at the end of all that actually got

tear 17 ron paul delegates sent to the national convention in tampa. even though they won 6% of the vote in the state primary and everybody thought they'd get zero. they did this kind of thing all over the country. ron paul also lost the nevada caucus in 2012 pretty soundly, never mind that, that's just the voters. ron paul lost with nevada voters in 2012. he effectively won the state three months later at the state party convention, fruflly the nevada republican party should have seen it coming. when ron paul ran in 2008, liss supporters caused such a raucus if 2008 in nevada the state shut down the convention that year without picking any delegates at all. so this time four years later in 2012, nevada got warned ahead of time which the rnc, don't cause trouble when mitt romney wins this year, don't fiddle with the rules to give somebody the delegates. they were warned. they did it anyway.

of course they did. just like they had done four years earlier in nevada in 2008. like they did that year if louisiana in 2012. in nevada in 2012, they also took over the state republican convention and again, even though ron paul soundly lost the caucus there months earlier, ron paul came out of the state convention with 22 out of the 25 state delegates. and the romney people tried to stop them. they that they learned their lesson from four years earlier. they tried to keep up with the intrigue and trickery. at the 2012 convention the ron paul campaign had been handing out slats, green pieces of papers with ron paul people who they wanted elected as delegates. if response the mitt romney people struck back allegedly by making up fake ron paul slats that look just like the real ones. the romney campaign, look at this, fake. allegedly hand out matching green sheets of people printed on the same hue, right, and they

said, hey, these are the ron paul delegates, but the names listed were the names of mitt romney backers. now, whether or not the romney campaign was behind that dirty trick, it didn't work. they were am cures at this stuff compared to the ron paul people t. ron paul campaign did go on to twiek 22 of the 25 delegates. they were not fooled, they were not dissuaded. they were not storm tracker 2000ed. they stuck it out. that was nothing compared to oklahoma t. oklahoma state convention that year turned into a street fight. >> reporter: we are told police had to get involved when a 70-year-old mitt romney supporter punched a ron paul supporter in the head after they disagreed on the vote. most of the contention was captured on cell phone video. >> reporter: the video you are watching has been recorded by a woman who says she was just hit in the back. >> with a fist to my back.

yes, she most certainly did. >> and a woman struck me with her fist in the mild of my spine and said it's your own dam fault r. these weren't the only commotions. this ron paul supporter says she was e he was hit in the head by a 70-year-old mitt romney supporter. >> after he got done, moved onto the important business that everyone is here for, instead of wasting time on someone else. i did appreciate how great the police were. >> i did appreciate how great the police were. this is all very polite except for the punching in the head and stuff. then the crowd at one point proceeded to boo and hiss at mary fallon when she said the party's single goal was to elect mitt romney as president that year. >> oklahoma, arguably the

reddest state in the nation. i assure you, there were no obama lovers at their convention, but the fight between the ron paul supporters got so bad someone at one point, either the venue or a campaign supporter or one side or another resorted to turning the lights on, on everybody. oil not kidding. >> they say there was a lot of disagreement throughout the day. things came to a halt when the lights were turned offer and the conference walls closed on one group. >> my heart was totally broken when the convention just was put into shambles and they were turning mics off. they turned the lies off. they pulled the walls across to prevent delegates from voting. >> after the punching, the blackout the booing, the walls closed, you would think both side would give up, like this didn't work. you know what, giving up is for amateurs t. ron paul folks decided to con15 and hold their

own convention the real convention in the parking lot of the embassy suites hotel. one more, just one more, maine. the initial 2012 maine caucus, mitt romney barely beat ron paul. there was some controversy. one of the precinct caucuses was cancelled due to bad weather. they claimed the weather wasn't that bad t. whole thing was cancelled to disenfranchise run paul supporters remember when it came time to select delegates at the state convention, everybody was already in a huff. to start off that convention, reason paul supporters elected one of their own as the convention chairman. thereafter, every time a romney supporter objected to any proceeding of any kind the new chairman ruled it out of order instantly and with that kind of guy in charge. no surprise, mitt romney may have technically won the state in the caucus when everybody voted. when they had the delegate, 24 hour of the state's delegates

went to ron paul. at tampa at the republican national convention. after the ron paul delegates from maine had arrived. the national rnc decided to intervene. they basically threw out half the ron paul delegation from maine and replaced them with mitt romney supporters. >> to proceed with the order of business. >> out of order. >> out of order. >> it's unfair, he sat here. he said own objections? we objected. why ask the question at that point. >> that's why the governor is not here today because he said he wouldn't come down unless the delegates got seated. half got taken away. they were replaced by the rnc. >> without objection the previous question is ordered.

the question is on the adoption of the resolution. all those in favor signify by saying aye. all those opposed. and we need another chair t. ayes have it. the resolution is adopted. without objection, a motion is laid on the table. >> this is fraud. the convention is a farce. >> we support our soldiers. but seven of them on our delegation. two recently served in afghanistan and iraq. how dare they, shame on them. shame on them. >> i was scammed.

i was duly elected as a delegate of the state of maine by a thousand of my followers. >> romney, romney, romney, romney, romney, romney! >> ron paul's maine delegation stormed out of the republican convention in protests. some held closed pins with lobsters to show both they were from maine and they were disguflted with what had happened. other delegations threatened to revolt in support of what happens to the delegation from maine half sent home because the rnc didn't like who supported them. texas supported them. it was a bit of a screaming revolt. >> that said on prime time tv, still an infomercial. on the scene, it was real chaos. real anger, real revolt, screaming bloody murder. for all the talk of the chaos that may happen at this year's republican convention, you know

what, we have seen this movie before. maybe we seen the short feature version of it. it was a minority of folks involved in this ron paul scheme in 2012. even so even with a minority of folks from the ron paul sliver of the party, what they brought in 2012 has sort of been written out of the history of 2012. it was a mess. it was agro. you know what, it's all possible this will be the moot point that front runner donald trump will have all the delegates he needs headed into the convention. if that's the case, it's possible, the republican convention will be an infomercial. this time it will be a donald trump brandened infomercial. even in an election in 2012. this kind of thing supposedly wasn't an issue. just under the surface of what was supposedly so calm in 2012, there was not just chaos and deceit and anger, but also sometimes violence. people were arrested. people were hurt. this stuff gets woolly really, really fast. and so, i say this and we're

doing a special report in part to say there is nothing new under the sun. don't believe it when people tell you nothing like this has ever happened before. that under card story of 2012 should also be a cautionary tale. people take politics seriously for a reason because it matters. stuff can get really ugly really fast. even under much more normal circumstances tan we are looking at this year. we have seen how bad it gets when it's not all that bad. if it is going to be bad this year, brace yourself, take this stuff seriously. .

i think we'll win before getting to the convention, but i can tell you if we didn't and if

we're 20 votes short and if we're 100 short and we're at 1,100 and somebody else is at 500 or 400, because we're way ahead of everybody, i don't think you can say that we don't get it automatically. i think you'd have riots. >> that was donald trump speaking earlier this week, worried a lot of people. today, though, his highest profile endorser is new jersey governor chris christie told reporters they shouldn't worry about that. quote, i don't think he meant literal riots. i think he meant politically oughts. what's a politically ought? there has been a lot of violent behavior exhibited at dozens of donald trump campaign events over the last few months. we don't know exactly what he means when he talks about riots. there has been serious consternation at previous republican political events just in the last presidential election cycle. somebody who is involved not in the violent side at all, in the political side the political

think it's going to happen on a much, much larger scale. not at an edge of party politic, right in the heart of it. do you worry about that? >> yes. and it's, it hasn't quite started the way you're going to see it. for example, you showed louisiana to your viewers. the louisiana state convention happened on march 12th. so it's already past. but donald trump, there's 47 delegates there. donald trump carried 42% of the statement and i guarantee you, those delegates are fought supporters of donald trump. some are santorum. some are left over romney from four years before because trump has not organized a ground game. now he's going to now and he will do in texas to select some actual delegates and california is wide opened. so he's got a chance to get some of his own people at the convention. that's where it's going to get hot and heavy and you are going to see these fights at the district conventions and county
