look. but, i wouldn't tk about them. >> he hasn't campaigned for a week. he's been hiding in trump tower. but late at night he sends tweets attacking my life, attacking heidi. it is inappropriate. it is wrong. it is frankly disgusting. >> we'll have the latest from the campaign trail, and we're live in brussels. where two more americans have been identified as victims of last week's terror attack. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west, and this is "way too early." good morning. it's monday, march 28th. i'm jonathan capehart. we begin this morning in brussels where it's now been confirmed that two more americans were killed in last week's bombings. their identities are still unknown. that comes after nbc news confirmed that missing american couple justin and stephanie shults are also among the dead.

president obama called their families yesterday to offer his condolences. as for the investigation into the attacks, over the weekend, belgian prosecutors announced the first criminal charges in connection with the bombings. and one person named faycal cheffou was directly charged in connection with the attacks. prosecutors say among the charges he faces is terrorist murder. belgian authorities haven't been firmed the role cheffou is accused of playing but several belgian news organizations are citing police sources who say he is believed to be the man wearing white in that surveillance photo. nbc news, however, has not confirmed those reports. this video was posted online in 2014 by a man who identified himself as faycal cheffou. let's bring in msnbc foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin. update us on the other new details in this investigation. >> yeah, the investigation now is actually moving on two fronts. you have the continued raids that have been taking place

stronghold. lahore is the hometown of the prime minister and his brother is chief minister of the province. meanwhile, syrian state media says government forces have recaptured the ancient city of palmyra with the help of russian air power. the syrian observatory for human rights calls it the single biggest defeat for the islamist state since it declared a caliphate in 2014. last week iraq began to retake mosul from isis but what remains to be seen in palmyra is how many of the city's iconic ruins remain intact. now another head line from the region the "l.a. times" reports that syrian rebel groups armed by the pentagon are now fighting with rebel groups armed by the cia. it's reportedly happening in contested territory between aleppo and the turkish border, the pentagon relaunched its once failed program to train syrian rebels earlier this month. now let's turn to u.s. politics, and we begin with a clean sweep for bernie sanders in three democratic contests out

west. senator sanders won the hawaii, washington, and alaska caucuses in landslides on saturday. his margin of victory in each state was 40 points or higher. sanders picked up 55 delegates to clinton's 20. but still trails her by 675 delegates overall. as the results were still coming in on saturday, sanders was in wisconsin, ahead of that state's primary on april fifth, and at a rally in madison he struck a defiant tone in front of more than 8,000 people. >> we are making significant inroads in secretary clinton's lead, and we have -- and we have with your support coming here in wisconsin, we have a path toward victory. >> meanwhile yesterday on "meet the press," sanders challenged secretary clinton to a debate in new york before that state's primary on april 19th.
2:37 am
>> i would hope very much that as we go into new york state, secretary clinton's home state, that we will have a debate, new york city, upstate, wherever, on the important issues facing new york. >> is she -- are you worried she won't debate you anymore? >> yeah, i do have a little bit of concern about that. but i certainly would like to see a debate in new york state. >> and the sanders campaign said yesterday that it sent a letter to the clinton campaign reiterating their call for a new york debate. a spokesman for the clinton campaign confirmed they received the letter. spent 100 minutes talking to "the new york times" about the issues on friday. trump summed up his world view by saying quote i'm not an isolationist but i am america first so i like the expression, we have been disrespected, mocked and ripped off for many many years by people that were smarter, shrewder, tougher. we were the big bully, but we

were not smartly led. the big, stupid bully, and we were systematically ripped off by everybody. trump said he is willing to withdraw u.s. forces from south korea and japan unless they increase their payments for protection, leading "the new york post" to label him leader of the fee world. this just days after trump dodged questions from "the washington post" editorial board about the specifics behind his plan to quickly defeat isis. >> if you could substantially reduce the risk of harm to ground troops would you use a battlefield nuclear weapon to take out isis. >> i don't want to use -- i don't want to start the process of nuclear. remember, one thing that everybody has said, i'm a counterpuncher. rubio hit me. bush hit me. when i said low energy. he's a low energy individual. he hit me first. by the way, spent $18 million worth of negative ads on me. >> this is about isis. you would not -- >> this is a very good-looking group of people. could i just go around so i know
2:39 am
who the hell i'm talking to? >> sure. >> and coming up on "morning joe," we'll talk to "the new york times'" david sanger about his interview with donald trump. in a campaign of ugly attacks, things got even uglier. on friday the national inquienq published a story suggesting senator ted cruz was involved in extramarital affairs, allegations that cruz strongly denied. and laid at the feet of donald trump whose former adviser, longtime gop operative roger stone is quoted in the story. >> let me be clear, this national enquirer story is garbage. it is complete and utter lies. it is a tabloid smear. and it is a smear that has come from donald trump and his henchmen. it is attacking my family. and what is striking is donald's henchman roger stone had for months been foreshadowing that this attack was coming.
2:40 am
it's not surprising that donald trump's tweet occurs the day before the attack comes out. it is a story that quoted one source on the record. roger stone. donald trump's chief political adviser. and i would note that mr. stone is a man who has 50 years of dirty tricks behind him. he's a man for whom a term was coined, for koppu lating with a rodent. well let me be clear, donald trump may be a rat but i have no desire to copulate with him. >> the tabloid provided no evidence to back up its claims and roger stone told nbc news he's not the source of the story. the enquirer previously endorsed trump. and on friday trump put out a statement on the story which said, in part, quote, i had absolutely nothing to do with it. did not know about it. and have not, as yet, read it. ted cruz's problem with the national enquirer is his and his alone. and while they were right about o.j. simpson, john edwards, and

many others, i certainly hope they are not right about lyin' ted cruz. and yesterday trump accused cruz of illegally coordinating with a super pac that used a photo of his wife melania in an ad. >> he's the one that started it. and from what i hear, he and his campaign went out and bought the cover shoot. she did -- melania did a cover shoot for "gq." from what i hear, somebody bought the rights to it, and he was the one, or his campaign bought the rights and they give it to the super pac. and just so you understand, that super pac is very friendly to ted cruz. he knew all about it 100%. >> last night a spokesperson for ted cruz said this was not at all true. quote, and trump knows it. but part and parcel for the sleazy, dishonest campaign he is running. meanwhile, there were more signs over the weekend that the republican party is pulling farther and farther apart. yesterday, ted cruz highlighted donald trump's donations to democrats writing that trump is
2:42 am
no republican, and he certainly is no conservative. this follows cruz evading the question of whether he will support him as the nominee, something governor john kasich would not commit to either. >> you know, donald is fond of giving people nicknames. with this pattern he should not be surprised to see people calling him sleazy donald prime minister. >> so yes or no will you vote for him? >> i will say this, i don't make a habit out of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my family. and donald trump is not going to be the republican nominee. >> you still are committed to supporting donald trump if he's the nominee? >> we're going to look at it every single day, and we'll see what happens when we got a long way to go and i don't want to project that he's going to be the nominee. i don't think he will be, and if he is, there will be -- i review it every day. >> i was just going to say it sounds like its more hesitance every day. >> i said what i said chuck and i'm done talking about this subject.
2:43 am
>> for his part, trump says the gop is treating him unfairly, following a report in "the wall street journal" that cruz might come out ahead in delegates in louisiana after the state convention. trump tweeted yesterday, just to show you how unfair republican primary politics can be, i won the state of louisiana, and get less delegates than cruz. lawsuit coming. meanwhile, some republicans are suggesting trump's opponents team up. senator lindsey graham said he is going to -- he's going to talk -- kasich supporters about a cruz-kasich ticket which he says is the best way we can stop trump. this while kasich's top strategist john weaver said cruz's calls for kasich to drop out are disingenuous and that they reach out -- reach out to coordinate behind the scenes but play victim in public. yesterday kasich said if anything he should be at the top of the ticket. >> the narrative over the last week has been, what is wrong with the party? kasich's the guy that can win the general.
2:44 am
some people have said kasich would be the best president. i mean, get out for what? if i'd have gotten out trump would be the nominee, he would have won ohio, and frankly, we'll win some districts in wisconsin. we will move to pennsylvania, where i'm basically in a statistical tie with trump. and when we go to new york and everywhere else, we're going to pick up delegates. so it's absurd. it's absurd. you know, if you really want -- let them consolidate behind me because frankly i'm the one that can win in the fall and i'm the one that can get the crossover votes. >> a new poll shows a tight race in the biggest republican contest of the entire primary. 172 delegates are at stake in california's june 7th primary. a closed contest for registered republicans only. and the new usc -- "los angeles times" poll shows trump in the lead 37% to ted cruz's 30% among registered voters. john kasich is at 12%. but among likely voters the race is essentially tied. trump at 36% and cruz at 35%.
