"first look" starts right now. good morning, everybody. thanks so much for joining us today. i'm betty nguyen. so the badger state has spoken. bernie sanders led hillary clinton by double digits. the win nets him 46 new delegates. clinton picks up 43. he is now less than 250 pledged delegates behind clinton but when you factor in super delegates he trails by more than 600. he's hoping to capitalize on the push with this win and what it gives him. >> with our victory tonight in wisconsin, we have now won seven out of eight of the last caucuses and primaries. >> secretary clinton tweeted congrats to bernie sanders on winning wisconsin.

to all the volunteers who poured your heart into this campaign, forward, "h." they'll debate on april 14th with new yorkers going to the polls five days later on the 19th. at a town hall, clinton was welcomed by new york first lady shirley mccray and clinton was quick to needle trump on his home turf. >> thank you. the fellow who's from new york, i wish he'd get out of one of his towers and actually walk the streets and spend time with the people of this city. because peddling prejudice and paranoia is not the new york way. >> i'm with her. i'm with her. >> well, i'm also with you. >> clinton also appeared on "the view" and held a fund raiser in the bronx. later this morning, she sits down with joe and mika on "morning joe." senator ted cruz beat trump by a wide margin.

he collects 33 delegates to trump's 3, narrowing his gap with the donald to 239. cruz won praise from fellow republican lindsey graham who tweeted, quote, well done ted cruz. hopefully tonight is the turning point to deny trump 1,237 delegates. saying trump's domestic and foreign policy gibberish is beginning to catch up with him. graham's turning point comment was echoed in cruz's victory speech along with a warning. >> tonight is a turning point. it is a rallying cry. it is a call from the hard working men and women of wisconsin to the people of america. we have a choice. a real choice. so let me just say hillary, get ready. here we come. >> nbc's hallie jackson spoke with wisconsin governor scott walker about cruz's chance with the race moving forward.

>> i think you're seeing and -- well, embodied in the fact you see jeb bush to carly fiorina, lindsey graham, coming together. this is a guy who can unite us like reagan did after the primaries. win the nomination and convention and then go on to win in november. >> and a reuters rolling poll shows cruz gaining on the donald. now polling within the margin of error as the candidates prepare for new york's primary. so how much of an impact did donald trump's loss in wisconsin have on his path to the nomination? msnbc's steve kornacki crunched the numbers. >> so we're talking about this path to 1,237 for donald trump. what does tonight's loss in wisconsin do to complicate that for him? look at this on the screen right here, donald trump does clear the image magic number here. not a prediction here. after tonight he'll be roughly

at 760. next state up, new york. big favorite in new york. can he get 80 of the 95? if he does he's at 840. take a look at the rest of the northeast. loose definition of the northeast, west virginia, maryland in there too. if he does really well here, the way he's supposed to do if he's not too hurt by tonight, he could come out of that with 1,015 out of the northeast. a narrow win in indiana and added 30 to that, he's at 1,045. if he goes out to the west coast, goes to california, the pacific coast out here, if he gets about 175 out of that, he'd be sitting at 1,220. remember, 1,237 is the magic number. you have to take probably nebraska, south dakota and montana off the board. these look like cruz states, and they're winner take all. that leaves new mexico if he's at 1,220, 24 delegates proportional, he could get over the top.

geek a couple of the other -- tweak a couple of the other ones. it's a very tight, very narrow path for donald trump. it exists but a lot of things have to go his way. and losing wisconsin tonight didn't help. >> all right. see how that turns out. in the meantime, though in an unprecedented move al lawmakers are moving to impeach robert bentley over his alleged affair with an aide who's since resigned but he's vowing to defend himself. nbc's kerry sanders has more. >> reporter: for the first time in alabama history, the process to impeach this state's governor began. >> we're looking at at this governor who has essentially betrayed the trust of the people of alabama. >> reporter: ins are on the 73-year-old governor issued a statement promising to vigorously defend himself. second term governor bentley is accused of using state resources to further an affair with rec ac -- rebekah mason. leaked audiotapes are alleged to

be him talking to her. has apologized for making inappropriate comments. >> i did. that's why i asked the people of this state to forgive me because they are forgiving people. they know god's grace. >> reporter: this scandal exploded after the fired top law enforcement official here raised questions about the governor's at ledged relationship -- alleged relationship and possible misuse of state resources. >> this not about the governor's personal conduct. this is about the allegations against him including that he obstructed justice within the state law enforcement agency. >> reporter: ironically, house members who may eventually vote on impeachment are the same one who re-upped the speaker of the house, despite his indictment on 23 counts of ethics violations. the speaker who maintains his innocence has yet to go on trial. and among the witnesses who could be called in the case --

governor bentley. >> alabama is partly embarrassed by it and partly used to it. it's part of the circus that goes on here. >> nbc's kerry sanders reporting this. a special house investigative committee has been formed and a vote is wyches away. another state has passed a so-called religious freedom law in the wake of legalizing same-sex marriage, but critics see it as a thinly veiled violence to discriminate against gays and lesbians. janet shamlian has more. >> reporter: the announcement from bryant came on twitter and facebook. he signed the state's controversial religious rights bill. allowing businesses, churches and others to refuse service to same-sex couples. based on religious believes. >> it simply protects someone's religious views against the state. >> reporter: reaction is swift,
