campaign is going to earn the 1,237 delegates needed to win the republican nomination. good morning. it's wednesday, april 6th and i'm sam stein. now wisconsin has spoken and the message is clear. the fight for the nomination in both parties will go on. last night, ted cruz scored a must win victory in the wisconsin republican primary, comfortably beating donald trump. and governor john kasich won 14%. trump fared well in the northern and western part of the state and cruz has taken home 33 delegates so far with six yet decided. on the democratic side, bernie sanders had a resounding 14-point victory over hillary clinton. by he made only a small dent in the delegate race. sanders picked up 46 delegates to clinton's 43.
2:31 am
however, clinton has the support of the super delegates. and senator sanders trails by 670 delegates as they move on to wyoming on saturday and new york ten days after that. but let's start with the republicans. it was a banner night for ted cruz in the wisconsin republican party. gop turnout easily broke the record set in 1980. with more than 1 million people participating in. the nbc news exit poll found fewer wisconsin republicans were angry at washington. among the key groups behind cruz's victory in november. meanwhile, 68% went to cruz and 8% to trump and he won on those with incomes over $100,000. last night, a triumphant cruz announced his campaign brought in $2 million on tuesday alone.
2:32 am
and he said he's convinced that he will earn enough delegates to secure the nomination. >> tonight is a turning point. it is a rallying cry. it is a call from the hard working men and women of wisconsin to the people of america. we have a choice. a real choice. i am more and more convinced that our campaign is going to earn the 1,237 delegates needed to win the republican nomination. either before cleveland or at the convention in cleveland, together we will win a majority of the delegates and together we will beat hillary clinton in november. >> now donald trump did not go before the cameras last night, giving you a sense of how the night went for him. instead, he leased a statement it reads, donald trump withstood the onslaught of the establishment and lyin' ted had
2:33 am
the governor of wisconsin and many talk radio show hosts and the entire party apparatus behind him. not only was he propelled by the anti-trump super pacs and spending thousands on false advertising but coordinating with his own super pacs which is illegal. he's a trojan horse being used by the party bosses attempting to steal the nomination from mr. trump. we have total confidence that mr. trump will go on to win in new york. now it's worth noting there's no evidence of coronation -- coordination between cruz and the super pacs. donald's gonna donald. he talked up the advantage in the popular vote yesterday. >> we actually have a very, very good campaign going. i'm number one by a lot. and you know the thing that nobody talks about are the votes. millions of votes more than anybody else. we talk about delegates which i'm by far and away number one.
2:34 am
but the votes are even more impressive because i have -- if you take a look, close to 3 million votes more than the second place person. >> all right, trump's -- they were eager to tout the delegate race after wisconsin. arguing that cruz was not well positioned to stop donald trump from becoming the nominee. senator lindsey graham of south carolina tweeted, quote, well done, ted cruz. hopefully tonight is the turning point to deny donald trump 1,237 delegates. getting tired of that number. and bottom line, donald trump's foreign policy gibberish is catching up to him. and scott walker told hallie jackson that others would come together behind cruz at the convention. >> some of the conventional wisdom said this is more of a defeat for trump than a victory for ted cruz. what does this mean for that movement and looking to try and stop donald trump from taking the nomination? >> well, i think it's a clear
2:35 am
win for ted because not only can trump -- very unlikely to get to the 1,237 going into the convention, then you add to that a lot of the people who are with others. maybe marco rubio or others along the way. they're inclined to be with ted cruz overwhelming on the subsequent battles. we get the 1,237 outright for ted cruz going into the convention or most likely we get it on the second or the subsequent ballot. >> all right. let's turn back to the democrats and take a look closer at bernie sanders 14-point win over hillary clinton. the senator from vermont was dominant all over the state, beating clinton in all but three of the 72 counties. it's sanders' six straight victory and he's won 15 states to clinton's 18. still because of her massive advantage among the super delegates and the proportional way in which the delegates are rewarded clinton's grip on the nomination is pretty tight. sanders was undeterred last night in wyoming.
2:36 am
he summed up the state of the campaign with a single word. >> let me say a word -- well, maybe two words, i don't know. about what momentum is all about. momentum is starting this campaign 11 months ago and the media determining that we were a fringe candidacy. momentum is starting the campaign 60 to 70 points behind secretary clinton. momentum is that within the last couple of weeks there have been national polls which have had us one point up, or one point down. what momentum is about is that all across this country the american people are looking around them. and they understand that real

change in our country's history, whether it is the trade union movement, whether it is the civil rights movement, whether it is the women's movement, whether it is the gay rights movement, they understand that real change never ever takes place from the top on down. it always takes place from the bottom on up. >> that clearly was not a single word. as the last ballots in wisconsin were cast, hillary clinton was meeting with donors at a campaign fund-raiser in new york and later in the evening she congratulated senator sanders on a victory via twitter. according to nbc news exit polls, 83% of democratic voters in wisconsin yesterday were white. and senator sanders took nearly 60% of the vote. meanwhile, sanders won 83% of the voters who said honesty is
2:38 am
the most important quality in the candidate. he won 82% of the voters between the ages of 18 and 29. 72% of independents and 64% of men. and we'd be better off listing which voter blocs he didn't win at this point. senator sanders inspires them more about the future of the country and among the voters 46% expect life for the next generation of americans to be worse. that's pretty bleak. now, big news here, joe and mika will ask secretary clinton about her strategy moving forward when they talk with her live just ahead on "morning joe." you will want to tune in for that. meanwhile, donald trump unveiled the plan to come pell the mex -- compel the mexican government to pay for the border wall. it plans on stopping wire transfers out of the country by undocumented individuals unless he or she can prove the lawful presence in the united states. and then he'll tell mexico to
2:39 am
fund the wall. curious to see how this goes. this as trump condemned ford motor company's decision to build a $1.7 billion assembly plant in mexico and as president obama derided trump's plans. >> i'm getting questions from foreign leaders about some of the whackier suggestions that are being made. the notion that we'll track every western union -- you know, bit of money being sent to mexico, you know, good luck with that. then we've got the issue of the implications for the mexican economy. which in turn if it's collapsing actually sends more immigrant north because they can't find jobs back in mexico. >> all right. alabama lawmakers are moving to impeach governor robert bentley in the wake of an
