new york belongs to trump and hillary clinton. donald trump dominated the republican primary, winning 61% of the vote. john kasich was in second and no surprise voters sent new york values ted cruz a clear message. clinton also won hand ali. she defeated bernie sanders, and clinton thanked her adopted home state and pivoting to the general election. >> today you proved once again there's no place like home. [ cheers and applause ] to all the people who supported senator sanders, i believe there is much more that unites us than divides us. tonight, a little less than a year later the race for the democratic nomination is in the homestretch and victory is in sight. >> clinton picked up 136

delegates in new york to sanders' 105. edging her closer to the nomination. six delegates remain unallocate and sanders picked up a super delegate today in illinois. a disappointed sanders headed home to vermont to recharge but said he isn't going anywhere. >> over the last 11 1/2 months, this campaign has come a very, very long way. so we lost tonight. there are five primaries next week. we think we'll do well. and we have a path toward victory which we are going to fight to maintain. >> sanders campaign manager jeff weaver outlined their path forward with msnbc's steve kornacki. >> well, i mean, if you look -- obviously the big state here is california. i mean, big -- a big win there will get you a lot of delegates.

oregon should be good for the senator. these states -- we have won them all around here. the senator has been doing well with latino voters across the country, so new mexico certainly in play. indiana, state that he's going to do well in. it's possible to run all of these states, new jersey has a lot of delegates. if you look at -- a lot of delegates on the board. >> if june 7th comes and goes, and hillary clinton has bonn the pledged delegates and won the popular votes there's a lot of calls for you the sanders campaign to make decision to unite around her. you're saying instead of that you will spend those months, those weeks in the summer trying to flip super delegates to bernie sanders before the convention? >> at this point, yes, absolutely. >> you heard it right there. now, on the republican side, trump said it was vital he win big in new york. and he did. >> i have to say to the people that know me the best, the people of new york when they give us this kind of a vote, and it's just incredible.

i really want to thank my team. my team has been amazing. and, you know, it's actually a team of unity. it's evolving, but people don't understand that. we don't have much of a race anymore. based on what i'm seeing on television, senator cruz is just about mathematically eliminated. we're really, really rocking. we expect we're going to have an amazing number of weeks. we'll go into the convention i think as the winner. >> trump picked up 88 delegates in new york as he expands the lead on the field and marches closer to the 1,237 needed for the nomination. kasich picked up three in new york while cruz was shut out. four delegates are unallocated right now. the race now pivots to next tuesday's contest. delaware, connecticut, pennsylvania and rhode island are all up for grabs. let's bring in political analyst and best selling author ellis henican to talk about this big

primary. good morning to you. >> good morning. big night for the front-runners, huh? >> what a night it was. so what do you think these decisive wins mean for trump and clinton? >> well, they mean a much easier path to the nomination for both of them. i don't think we were so worried about hillary, but donald trump needs every last delegate to win on the first ballot and this became more likely with new york. >> i know in the beginning we talked about this. you said it doesn't look like he'll get to it. to an uncontested convention. are you seeing it might happen? >> you know, it's still tough. he has to do an awful lot of winning in the weeks to come. but i have to tell you, as we're sitting here right now, betty, i think he's got the momentum. i think the numbers are in sight. he just can't afford to lose anything for the next few weeks. >> well, okay, so if current polling holds, ted cruz is eliminated from a first ballot win after april what 26th? so can he win on a second ballot

at a contested convention? >> listen, in -- if donald trump doesn't nail this down on first ballot, anything is possible. there's still an awful lot of republican leaders who do not want donald trump as the nominee. once the second and third and 17th ballots happen, anything is possible. >> do you think kasich is going to stay in? >> i don't think anybody is ever going to quit. why should they quit, this is fun. why quit? >> what about bernie sanders, he said he's pushing forward, claiming he can take the pledged delegate lead on june 7th. how does that math work? >> it's -- they call that the new math, guess. it will be tough mathematically. but again, the dollars are flowing in. he has a message, there's passionate crowds showing up to hear him. i think the real question for bernie what's the tone going forward? rough or gentle? >> that's what i wanted to find out. because he's vowed not to run a negative campaign but his back is up against the wall at this point. does he have to start mud
