2:30 am
>> two against one. john kasich and ted cruz respond to the collusion, and all that matters today is the delegates up for grabs in five states. on the democratic side, victory in sight for hillary clinton as she hammers away at trump while trying to win over bernie sanders' supporters. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning. it's tuesday, april 26th. i'm jonathan capehart. voters will make their choice for president in five states today as the presidential primaries roll through five northeastern states. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is hoping to extend her delegate lead over bernie sanders and the senator will join us live later this morning to tell us his path to victory.
2:31 am
on the republican side, ted cruz is likely to be mathematically eliminated from a first ballot convention victory tonight. needing 98% of the remaining delegates to stay viable. leaving donald trump as the only candidate who can conceivably win the 1,237 convention votes before cleveland this july. yesterday we told you that ted cruz and john kasich were going to stay out of each other's way in key upcoming states that kasich would bow out of indiana and cruz in turn would let kasich go after new mexico and oregon. yesterday morning over breakfast, that plan hit a speed bump. >> no no no. i'm not going to go tell anybody how to vote. they -- but look, this is a matter of resources. we're running a national campaign. we want to apply our resources where we think they can be used most effectively and it's all designed to stop hillary clinton from becoming president. well, i have never told them not to vote for me. they ought to vote for me.
2:32 am
but i'm noefr not over there -- not i'm over there campaigning and i'm not campaigning in indiana and he's not campaigning in the other states that's all. that's all it is. >> thank you, guys. >> thank you. >> not a big deal. >> last night, the john kasich campaign announced they're pulling out of indiana, leaving this as a direct one-on-one choice for the people of indiana, between our campaign and donald trump. that choice is important for the country and i'll tell you, it's been 46 days since the last republican debate. >> chicken. >> it's hard to dispute that. >> as donald trump's opponents launched a coordinated attack on his path to majority, trump was swift with the counterpunch branding his opponents as losers colluding against them. he pointed to the wins in an attempt to subvert the will of the voters and give party brokers the final say. >> they made a deal. right?
2:33 am
that cruz was going to take indiana. how weak is that? how pa thetdic is when they use collusion? i said to my people, that's great. it will make them look weak and pathetic which they are as politicians. but kasich this morning said, what are you talking about? i want people in indiana to vote for me. in other words, he broke the deal. he broke the deal. this is politicians, folks. all talk, no action. they'll never get you there. cruz and kasich, now, let's talk kasich. kasich is doing worse than many of the people that left months ago. i mean, if you look at marco rubio he did much better than case. he had more -- to this day he has more delegates. this is just a guy who's a stubborn guy who eats like a slob. and shouldn't have press conferences while stuffing stuff down his throat. honest, i have never seen anything like it.
2:34 am
but this is a guy who's a stubborn guy. i'm not leaving. i'm not leaving. he's 1 for 42. folks, we have doing so well. again, millions and millions of votes more than lyin' ted. millions and millions of votes more than 1 in 42 kasich. i call him now 1 in 42 because he has one win and i think they said 42 losses. that's a lot, we're moving along pretty rapidly. so we're going to pick a guy that over a year got creamed, right? got creamed. we're going to let him because so you explain how that's done. you have a revolt. you would have -- at a minimum nobody -- all these millions of people that have joined the republican party. all of these people will never vote. believe me they will never vote for anybody, probably. but they won't be voting for a republican. a new "usa today" suffolk university poll shows that trump is the choice of republicans nationally. trump is ahead with 45% to ted cruz at 29%. john kasich with 17%.
2:35 am
more than two-thirds of republican voters say the party's nominee should be someone who ran in this year's primaries. while they are more closely divide on how the convention should decide if no one has a majority. 47% said pick the person with the most points and 41% said go with the delegates' choice. half of donald trump's supporters would vote for him as a third party candidate if he's denied the nomination. ted cruz and john kasich acknowledge they're looking ahead to the general and picking a running mate. a top aide to carly fiorina said she's being vetted by the cruz campaign. there's no long on how long the vetting process has been under way. fiorina endorsed cruz in early march and has been a regular with him on the campaign trail ever since. john kasich said he's vetting
2:36 am
potential running mate and he was asked if fiorina could be among one of them. >> would you agree that carly fiorina would be a great vice president with you? >> i don't know. that reaction was not the most overwhelming i've ever heard. >> as for the democratic front-runner, hillary clinton, she heads to indiana today. ahead of the may 3rd primary there. but during a rally in wilmington, delaware, she renewed attacks on donald trump saying he's out of touch with everyday americans. >> come out of those towers, name for yourself and actually talk and listen to people. you know, at some point, if you want to be president of the united states, you've got to get familiar with the united states. don't just fly that big jet in and land it and go make a big speech and insult everybody you can think of. and then go back, get on that
2:37 am
big jet and go back to, you know, your country clubhouse in florida or your penthouse in new york. >> and later during the exclusive town hall in philadelphia, the former secretary of state touted her lead over bernie sanders, but appeared to reach out to sanders' supporters saying she and the senator share a lot of the same goals. still, she made it clear she does not plan to concede on her ideals in order to get sanders' supporters on board if she's the nominee. last night, senator bernie sanders appeared optimistic about his chances today, but conceded during an msnbc town hall if votes don't go his way tonight his path to the party's nomination becomes even more narrow. >> what this campaign is about is bringing millions of people into the political process. i'm very proud of this, the success that we have had to do that. now, at the end of the process, you know, frankly if we are behind in the pledged delegates
2:38 am
i think it's very hard for us to win. >> sanders pointed to clinton's super delegates saying they should be allowed to reconsider their allegiances. >> hundreds and hundreds voted for hillary clinton or chose to come on board her campaign before i even announced my candidacy. those people have a right to rethink the decision they made. if they conclude for a dozen different reasons that we are a stronger campaign -- by the way, this is not just talking off the top of my head. virtually every poll shows that bernie sanders does better against hillary clinton should that be taken into consideration, yeah, i do. i think so. >> as it stands this morning, clinton leads sanders by nearly 700 delegates. the largest delegate haul in today's primaries comes out of pennsylvania. 210 are up for grabs. when you include the super delegates. the latest nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll shows
