2:30 am
good morning, everyone. it is wednesday, april 27th. i'm alex witt. for all of the build-up to last night's races, reading off the results was short and sweet for donald trump. three of the five races were called immediately for the republican front-runner with the final two falling his way minutes later. the clean sweep moves the first-time politician that much closer to the 1,237 delegates needed to lock up the nomination and avoid a fight on the convention floor in cleveland this summer. it was also a big night for hillary clinton who won four of the five states in her quest to shake off bernie sanders. and push ahead to the general election. donald trump's wins were sweeping and the margins were wide. trump won with 64% in rhode island, 61% in delaware, 58% in connecticut, 57% in pennsylvania and 54% in maryland. last night, trump basked in his victories in a press conference in trump tower. >> this is a far bigger win than we even expected. all five. that's something that's really --
2:31 am
that's really something. and not only is it all five, it's all five whether it's 60 or just about 60 and even i see one up at 66 and 67. you have to remember, i say this all the time to the pundits, i love the pundits but i say it all the time, there are three people. when you crack 60 and as we did last week with our great city and our great state of new york, when you crack 60 with three people that's very hard to do. in fact, i think chris can tell you, if you crack 60 with two people that's called -- that's called a massive landslide. i consider myself the presumptive nominee, absolutely. we don't have a ceiling. you know what our ceiling is? i think it's 100%. we don't have a ceiling. >> trump also addressed the speculation over his campaign strategy including that he has rejected an internal push to make him appear quote more presidential and that his blunt
2:32 am
rhetoric is merely a persona. >> no, i am me. you know what, i hear that. you know, he'll be presidential, not presidential. he'll do that. it's much easier to be presidential. but i'm not playing a part. look, i started off with 17. i'm down, now i'm winning. it's over. as far as i'm concerned it's over. why would i change? if you have a football team you're winning and then you get to the super bowl you don't change your quarterback, right? i'm not changing. >> hillary clinton's campaign is already looking to capitalize on some of the closing comments from trump's speech last night. a top aide to hillary clinton says the democrats campaign will send out a fund-raising appeal based on this. >> i think the only card she has is the women's card. she's got nothing else going and frankly if hillary clinton were a man, i don't think she'd get 5% of the vote. the only thing she's got going is the woman's card. and the beautiful thing is women don't like her. okay? and look how well i did with women tonight.
2:33 am
>> so that video is worth a second look. this time keep your eye on governor chris christie's wife mary pat right there on the right. >> i think the only card she has is the woman's card. she has nothing else going, and frankly if hillary clinton were a man, i don't think she'd get 5% of the vote. the only thing she's got going is the woman's card and the beautiful thing is women don't like her. okay? and look how well i did with women tonight. okay. >> hmm. eye rolling there. a top clinton aide called the comments a big deal and said that trump has quote, doubled down on the same offensive rhetoric towards women. at a rally earlier in the night, clinton addressed the suggestisu suggestion she only has her gender on her side. >> the other day, trump accused me of quote playing the woman card. if fighting for women's health care and paid family leave and equal pay is playing the woman
2:34 am
card, then deal me in. >> donald trump excelled with voters, and look at the map of pennsylvania. he won every county across the state. the statement is true in maryland and delaware. he won all but one county in rhode island and all but six in connecticut. ted cruz did not win a single county last night. according to exit polling, trump did wit voters of all income brackets. in maryland he took 60% of voters who made between 50 and $100,000. well, let's take a look at how the night went for the democrats. the lone bright spot for bernie sanders, rhode island, where he's up by 12 points. hillary clinton wins in connecticut by five points, in particular winning over new york's bedroom communities from there, her leads only widened. the margin is 12 points in pennsylvania. with 94% of the vote in, she's lead big 30% in maryland. really just 20 points in baltimore county. her lead grows around washington, d.c. to 36%.
2:35 am
and in nearby prince georges county, clinton won by an incredible 50%. according to nbc news exit polling she was dominant in polling among african-american votes and winning 68% of women. all this brings hillary clinton to 1,620 delegate, over 2,000 when you include the super delegates. bernie sanders has 1,330. it is still possible for bernie to get to the magic number. clinton walked out to a thrilling crowd and called for unity. >> with your help we're going to come back to philadelphia for the national democratic convention and we will unify our party to win this election and build an america where we can all rise together. an america where we lift each other up and instead of tearing each other down. whether you support senator
2:36 am
sanders or you support me, there's much more that unites us than divides us. >> meanwhile the democrats are sparring over who's closer to donald trump. yesterday, trump tweeted quote bernie sanders has been treated terribly by the democrats, both by delegates and otherwise. he should show them and run as an independent. trump added this in last night's victory speech. >> just take a look at the things that bernie sanders was saying about hillary clinton. he said some things about her that were so incredible. incredible. and so incredibly bad. that's a great level of hatred right there, but he's been telling the truth. i really mean it. i think bernie sanders should run as an independent. >> well, the sanders campaign rejected that advice and hit clinton with a picture of hillary clinton at trump's 2005 wedding. jeff weaver said that the clinton campaign said we're giving aid and comfort to trump
2:37 am
and there's one democrat who donald trump said would make a great president and it's not bernie sanders. last night, senator sanders congratulated secretary clinton on her victories and signalled he was looking ahead to the next 14 contests, but his campaign wrote, quote, the people in every state in this country should have the right to determine who they want as president and what the agenda of the democratic party should be. and it goes on to talk about fighting for a progressive party platform at the democratic national convention this july which many are reading as an acknowledgment that the campaign sees the nomination as slipping out of reach. last night in west virginia, sanders gave little attention to the day's voting and instead reminded the crowd of how far his campaign has come. >> we were taking on the most powerful political organization in america and an organization that elected a president -- president clinton on two occasions and ran a very strong campaign for president, for secretary clinton in 2008. as of today, we have now won 16
2:38 am
primaries and caucuses all over this country. and with your help, we're going to win here in west virginia. >> well, moving to the establishment democrats won key senate primaries in maryland's hard fought primary, seven term congressman van hollen defeated donna edwards. edwards was backed by almost 6 in 10 african-american voters and 35% supported van hollen but he took an even larger share of the white vote. if van hollen wins in november he will succeed mikulski. in pennsylvania, katie mcginty backed by both president
2:39 am
obama and joe biden, she will face republican incumbent pat toomey in november. in pennsylvania, 11 term democratic congressman chaka fattah became the first incumbent to lose a primary. fattah was indicted on corruption charges last year. let's turn to business, and big hit for the world's second valuable company, apple iphone sales have fallen for first time ever. that's not all. let's get to cnbc's julia chatterley live from london. what else did we learn from apple? >> well, it was a real disappointment. good morning, alex. 16% drop in the number of iphones that they sold compared to the current quarter last year. but they were so incredibly down beat on the current quarter which i think was a bit of a problem for investors too. why did they struggle? well, something that's been lifting their overall volumes was china. there was a real problem in china this quarter. they're facing all sorts of fierce competition from competitors. but the real issue for the guys they're an innovator, a design company. where's the big product?
2:40 am
and tim cook suggested said, look, there's a bright future for apple but ultimately investors are going is it going to be virtual reality, the car? we haven't yet heard enough from them. there was a bright spot though. 10% hike in the quarterly dividend and a $50 billion increase to their buy-back. so they're trying to offset weakness on the one hand with some kind of boon to investors on the others. we're used to hearing disappointing news from twitter and they disappointed too as well. sales come in weaker than expected. not bad on earnings but the big thing here was they did manage to increase user growth. so they have 310 million active users. so the ceo said yesterday, look, this is the first time you're hearing about our long-term strategy. and alex i can tell you the stock fell 12%. so investor pretty clear what they think of that long term strategy. more needed from twitter. that stock now worth half what it was when they went public. >> even despite the 5 million
