chris held his own in the news competition cars in indianapolis he short seated the process by naming carly rfiorina as his running mate. >> after a great deal of time and thought. i have come to the conclusion that if i'm nominated to be president of the united states that i will run on a ticket with my vice presidential nominee carly fiorina. >> fiorina also spoke. she took a shot at the republican front-runner, her once and now current rival, donald j. trump billionaire. >> donald trump and hillary clinton are two sides of the same coin. they're both liberal. we know that, but, hillary

clinton, like so many politicians, hillary clinton has made her millions selling access and influence from inside the system. donald trump has made his billions buying people like hillary clinton. >> what does donald trump think of this pick. he gave the planet a pre-buttal window into his thinking. the billionaire was making his sleepy voice victory lap phone calls into some morning shows and reacted to the possibility of fiorina being added to the ticket on "good morning america." >> i think it would be a bad choice. carly did not resonate. not because she's a woman, but she did not resonate with the people. she's not going to do the trick. i like her. she's a nice person. she never resonated. she was very low in the polls. by the end she was an insignificant player.

if you want to bring carly back, it's okay, but it's not the right person. >> following the fiorina announcement, donald trump's son tweeted the following. this is truly one of the greatest acts of desperation i have ever seen. eric trump is not the only one saying that. john, was this a good move for cruz to name fiorina and was it well executed? >> i have seen a lot of desperate acts because i work in journalism but it's pretty desperate. this is like double dog desperate. i think there's -- it gives off a whiff of weakness. to the extent it changes the conversation a little bit from trump's big wins last night. it might be useful in this very short term. i don't think that carly fiorina

will help ted cruz one iota. >> the press say this is desperate, the guy is not the nominee. why is he naming a running mate? i think fiorina has the potential to go out there and try to help him win indiana. this is now a stage by stage thing. republicans have to get through this next stage which means cruz has to win indiana. i think she's an aggressive campaigner. she can help with the female voters. i think the press will say this is a negative because it looks desperate. i think it's positive. the reason you pick a running mate is you show you have good judgment. a lot of republicans will say she's ready to be president. trump will attack this mercil s mercilessly. he'll dominate it today with his gimmicky pick. can he continue to dominate it with the next five. >> most of the things that trump has pointed out that's wrong with fiorina, putting aside the

thing he said about her looks, she did not resonate with republican voters and not a successful candidate, the notion she did not debt anything done as presidential candidate, suggests the help she will get with voters is minimal. i think the running mates for actual presidential candidates or actual running mates do that much for the topic. the top of the ticket is what you vote for. >> since you ran over -- >> this is a hypothetical running mate. >> this would have helped more if it was a surprise. this has been the worst kept secret for several days. they acknowledged publicly she was being vetted. if they had done this as a surprise, it would be a much bigger deal. >> gets them nothing. at the mayflower hotel donald trump gave a speech, very different tone, tenor and tempo than his others. republican front-runner was tame and wedded to his teleprompter

as he talked about his vision for american engagement to the world describing how a trump administration might handle some of the world's trouble ed areas and the u.s. add ver sversary i. >> one that replaces randomness with purpose and chaos with peace. it's time to shake the rust off america's foreign policy. it's time to invite new voices and new visions into the fold. america first will be the major and overriding them of my administration. under a trump administration, no american citizen will feel that their needs come second to the citizens of a foreign country. world, through the clear lens of american interest. i will be america's greatest defender and most loyal champion. we will not apologize for becoming successful again, but will embrace the unique heritage that makes us who we are. >> there's a lot of reactions to this speech which we'll talk about next. the harshest was from ted cruz blasting one of trump's advisors after claiming trump fails the presidential test. quote, he must fully identify the role and involvement of mr. manafort who is widely recognized with corrupt foreign regimes and anti-democrat rulers, end quote. in terms of policy and politics, how do you rate the trump big foreign policy speech?

>> the haters hate it. they say it's not specific. it's inconsistent. it's not distinctive. if you took trump's name out of of it and just presented it, it was well organized. i thought it was fine in presentation and delivery. in terms of policy, take away the hatred of trump and the belief he's fake and phony, a lot of people have, a lot of things he's talking about, would, if he executed them, would reorient american policy that a lot of people would like our policies to be. >> hillary clinton has given detailed, articulate foreign policy speeches that we have play

praised on this show for their degree of rigor. this speech had none of that. it's something you would give them pass on a year ago. a candidate who didn't say anything with any specificity, as you acknowledge, i don't have any idea beyond general platitudes and principles, i have no idea to apply them. he talks about how he will get rid of isis with the stroke of a pen. he has a secret plan to do that, but he won't tell you how to do that. >> what's clinton's argument? >> i guarantee i can find you. guarantee i can find you three paragraphs in about two minutes on this machine that gives more specifity and detail to answer that question than you can find any anything donald trump said. >> i think it's late to be given his first foreign policy speech. >> nothing he said that made me

think he was qualified to be commander in chief. >> donald trump's speech got mixed reviews across the political world. some people praised his party's front-runner calling the remarks, quote, an important step for the tone of the presidential race. others were not so nice. trump got his share of bipartisan panning from the right and the left joining together in anti-trump harmony criticizing the substance of his speech and his style. the senator from south carolina, lindsey graham tweeted are we sure the guy running the telen rprompt rprom prompter in the right order. hashtag not making any sense. he might be one of two people running our country. don't laugh. go knock some doors. i don't mean to overstate how

good it was but what does the strong reaction, often similar from the left and right say about what trump will face not just on foreign policy but attacks in general if he's the nominee through november. >> he's unusual in this regard. donald trump is disliked. he's going to hear a lot of criticism from people in his own party. that's what he faces throughout this race. >> no major party nominee has faced the double barrel criticism. are there weaknesses in the speech? of course. does it look specifics? of course. would a speech face this kind of pounding from both sides?

no, it would not. trump is underestimating this extent to have allies. he can't win a general election if he's fighting a two-front war every time he opens his mouth. >> that's what's going to happen. some of the criticism he's a stupid person, but the bottom line is on issues of policy people disagree with donald trump. it's not just that they hate, they think he's wrong. >> reporters checked their objectivity at the door. he's going to be be major party nominee and they mocked the speech in way that was unprofessional. >> i do not think you disagree that all major party nominees deserve intense scrutiny from the press and skepticism on all fronts. donald trump is owed it on the fact he hasn't give an foreign policy speech before of any

welcome back. it's easy to forget that last night was huge for the front runners. hillary clinton won four out of the state fives. bernie sanders said in an interview that he's planning to layoff hundreds of campaign staff members across the country and refocus all of his resources or most of them on california. on the republican side, donald trump rolled a yahtzee last night, he didn't just won but won above what we expected. that led rick scott to call the

stop trump campaign to stop. he wrote in the antitrump groups don't stop now, their efforts will be nothing but a contribution to the clinton campaign. >> neither clinton or trump can secure nominations before the last day of voting. the press is saying that the reality of the math is it's over. her path now, her conduct will be much easier. sanders saying he's laying people off only helps her. trump couldn't have done any better in terms of the narrative as well. rick scott is on the cutting edge here. republicans now are starting to say it's over unless, unless, he loses indiana. trump is one win away from being able to say from people end this thing now. >> it's about mat and momentum. hillary clinton had mostly insurmountable lead already. she extended it.

bernie sanders will not get the pledge delegates. it's over on the democratic side unless there's some political lightning bolt and momentum wise she has it all. on the trump side, it's all i indiana now. it'sargely over. >> trump on morning joe dangles fund raising in front of rnc members. all right. the speech wasn't the only thing that donald trump is getting flak for today. you probably heard that part of his victory speech last night at trump tower when he said hillary clinton is only doing well because of her gender. we'll show you that sound bite even though you might have seen it. we have a hunch you'll be hearing an awful lot about it over the coming months if trump does become the nominee. let's go to the video tape. >> i think the only card she has

republican nominee. >> rick scott, john read the statement saying stop the stop trump movement because everything you do is helping hillary clinton? >> the governor of florida is kind of at the leading oench that debate. it's beginning to sink in that the cost of denying trump the nomination is chaos in the party. they can go up or down but you want to avoid uncertainty. that's the trend for the next two months. >> alex talks about the cost of the republican party in denying trump the nomination. i completely agree. on the other hand, a lot of alex's friend, a lot of mainstream republicans are worried what happens in trump is the nominee. does the senate go under?

going forward, is how to get the sanders voters to like her. what can she do to make that happen? >> she's got one great card in her pocket. that's us, republicans. if we can't unite the democratic party behind hillary clinton, nothing will. i'm sure she will head in that direction. there's no passion there for her. this is a stay home election for the democratic party. what can she do, put something on the ticket like elizabeth warren. square the democratic party strength. if she tries to reach across the middle with a v.p. pick, it could be passionless. i don't know what she can do other than move to vermont and live on a commune. >> point to donald trump and say look at him. >> that's what she started to do last night. look at bernie and the important issues he raised. look at the great campaign he ran. look at the people he brought into the process and let's all

get back together. she's already starting this. >> i think it just underestimates the extent. you listen to the sanders supporters. there's a lot of them who don't like her. they don't want donald trump to be president. what's the thing she can say to them that can get them passionately behind her? >> she can say i'm a democrat. the differences between the candidates are so small that they are exaggerated and the fights become huge and the fights are strong. people say the kinds of things that sanders supporters are saying about hillary clinton right now. at the end of the day they'll have a choice. the choice will be hillary clinton or donald trump or not showing up. hopefully they will show up but they won't vote for donald trump. >> they're two camps in the democratic party. they say like you, trump might come close. trump is a wide card and scrambles things. are those groups, among elite democrat, are those roughly equal or more people that say

trump can run flawless campaign and can't win. >> i'm not sure i'm quite in that camp. i do think there's a strain of donald trump's argument that's very similar to bernie sanders in a couple of respects. one is you're a victim and you're getting screwed. you're working harder and making less and someone is take your money. >> are you 80/20 that this is not a tough race. >> i think it's probably more like 60/40. a lot of people saying he's probably not going to get any lift but to assume he won't and plan like he won't is crazy. >> does anything else have to happen? do we need an e-mail indictment or you think on the current trajectory, donald trump can beat her? >> i don't think she knows who he is. she's had one card.

>> you think if there's no big intervening events, trump can beat her? >> yes. >> i don't think anything comes naturally to her. she doesn't believe in anything. she's not passionate about thing. she doesn't give people anything to be passionate about in her campaign. she's got one card that connects her to the future of this country and that's we have never had a woman president. even that seems to ring inauthentically for her. >> i don't know what that means. >> i'm not going to go there. >> hug bernie sanders. pick an elizabeth warren. that's not what she needed to do to go across the middle. i think you have this forced, stiff, inauthentic candidate that doesn't inspire the base in a general election and has no message the reach across the middle. i think she's beatable in a general election. >> i'd like to hang out at your office sometimes. >> we do have fun.

academy and we played navy eight straight years. we beat you every time we played you. i love you just as pump for your contributions to america as all the other venues of our military. this man will see that that group of people that we so depend on is really taken care of and treated in the best way possible. i want to say to you indiana people that i owe you a big, big debt of gratitude because nowhere in the world is a sporting group followed better than this state follows

basketball. i want the thank you for the opportunity i had to coach in this state. it will always be something that i will cherish. i want you to think about one thing and i appreciate what donald said relative to what our players did, the 900 wins and the long streak of not losing a game. remember this, those players on their shirt wore one word and it was indiana. now, you folks have a great

opportunity here. you folks vote iing for donald trump and throwing him over the top. if you people will do this, if you will do this, you will be having our government take its first step toward what all of us want america to be like. i had these -- you know, they talk in a negative way when they want to about donald and they talk about, he isn't presidential. i don't know what that means.

to me, i think of harry truman. they said harry truman wasn't presidential. he wasn't onto be one ocht three best presidents in the united states history. how many of you have a sister, a brother, a daughter or son in the military of any kind? raise your hands.

how many of you have relatives or you yourselves that go oversaes sometimes in sticky situations. how many of you have that in your lives? let me tell you something you can thank this man for. let me tell you something that will make your trips abroad much for comfortable than before. under his administration, there will never be another thing like what happened in benghazi. [ cheers and applause ] every branch of that military will get the absolute best care that they can possibly get from

the next president of the united states. the military will have that. [ cheers and applause ] one of the best things to do in this job that mr. trump is going to undertake is get good people. he does a great job of finding good people and teaching good people and even as important he's good at getting rid of bad people too. [ cheers and applause ] i think you're going to leave here tonight after you've heard mr. trump talk there's never

been a more honest politician than donald trump. after you've seen and listened to him, i think you'll be in a hurry to get out there and vote. i want you to know you have this great opportunity to push him over the top putting him in the best position this country has been in getting going where we all want to be. you people, if you will do that, if you will get us started on the road, i'm going to tell you what's going to happen to you. they're going to take all you people, what you did to give us donald trump, they're going to take all you people and put you right next to our founding

fathers in george washington. that's what they're going to do with you people. you will be responsible for the shift that america will make and what we want america to be if you will vote for donald trump. with that, with that, i simply say to you, i'll talk to you one other thing about donald trump and how he operates and how he gets things done. johnny walked into his dad's office one morning and said, dad, did mom tell you i passed the driver's test? son, she did tell me that. i'm really proud you have. she told me that the trooper that gave you the test said you had the best written test and the best driving test of anybody that he's ever had.

i'm so proud you have, son. dad, will that give me an opportunity to drive your car or mom's car once in a while? well, son, this is the man in charge. or the lady in charge, but this is all about the person that's in charge. he said to his son, well sure. there will be a time for you to use one of our cars. however, there are some prerequisites. your mother is not real happy with the way you treat your brother and sister. your grades are too below what they should be. i've talked you about reading and i've never seen you read and i've talked to you about the bible because there's a lot of good things in the bible that don't have anything to do with religion. there's one last thing and it's that long hair of yours. i've told you to get haircut. you haven't done it.

now, when you think you've done all these things, son, we'll talk about driving the car. about three weeks later johnny comes in to talk to his dad and said i wanted to talk to you. i think i've done a lot of things that you asked me to do. son, i'm proud you have. your grade, the way mom feel, the way you're treating your brother and sister and all those things we talked about. those prerequisites. really good in all of them. there's one thing left. that's that long hair of yours. you haven't done a thing with it. this is the man in charge. that's this man right here and that boy looked at him and he said, well, dad, you know you got me to read the bible. and i did. when i read the bible i learned a lot of things, but i also learned that matthew, mark, luke, john, jesus himself all had long hair, dad.

the man in charge looked at that kid and he said, son, you are absolutely right. they walked off everywhere they went. i thank you for giving me the opportunity to coach basketball in this state. now i want to give you the very best choice that's ever been made ong t the man taking the o his first job as president, and i give you donald trump. indiana. they said, yeah. i get on the phone. we checked it out. it was bobby knight. he said i want to tell you, i want you to run. this was before i decided. before that big day on june 16th coming down the escalator. he said i want you to run. my friends all want you to run. you'll be great, and i'll like to endorse you. i said what an honor. do me a favor. give me a number and maybe i'll be calling you back. then we had all these great victories. i think i've won 28 states. big night last night. we had a big, big night last night. we had five. we had five land slides. i said thanks a lot.

i took the number. i put it in a special place. i said let's see what i do. i said i'm going to run. too much. i just couldn't take it anymore. i see these horrible deals. in some cases they are out right stupid to be doing the deals they are doing. it's one of the three. i said i'm going to run. i went and we started winning, winning. we won new hampshire in a big upset. they're upsets and yet we're winning all these land slides. we had no chance in south carolina. we had no chance in south carolina. we won in a land slide. the evangelicals voted for trump. we went to the south. we went to nevada and we won. we won alabama and arkansas. we won florida by 20 points.

every place we were winning. now, about two weeks ago, it's getting ready and you don't know how important you are. we're just about ready to put it away, folks. great people. i've so many friends from indiana. i said, you know, it's amazing. it looks like indiana will be really, really important. by this time usually, by the time you get do indiana the race is decided. we had 17 people. it's never been in the history of politics in this country there's never been 17 before. i always say rgs what do you mean i didn't get 50%. i'm like with all these people, if i get 32% with 14 people left, that's like 90%.

any way, it came and we're winning. we had some great victories. then we won new york two weeks ago with tremendous numbers in the land slide. then we had last night. about three weeks ago, i said indiana is turning out to be a very important place, as it should be, right? i said to myself, i speak to friends in indiana. i said to myself, who woultd be the greatest endorsement in the history of indiana? i said i have to find that phone number. >> you heard it there. donald trump talking about the greatest endorsement in the history of indiana. we've been listening to him at rally where 57 delegates are up for grabs on tuesday. bobby knight said he would be the most prepared person to ever enter the white house if elected president. an endorser showing some of the
