thanks sofor joining us today. i'm betty nguyen. violence in seattle last night. peace much marches took a turn for the worse when an anti-capitalist group joined in. some protesters throwing rocks and flares at police. five officers were injured including one hit by a molotov cocktail and one who was bitten. police responded with pepper spray and flash bangs and eventually gained control. nine people were arrested. police posted this photo of weapons including wooden stakes, pipes and a molotov cocktail made from a beer bottle. we are on the eve of the indiana primary in what is one of the final chances republicans have to force a contested convention. the latest nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll has donald trump leading by 15 points while john kasich has all but written off the hoosier state. if that margin holds, trump could glide towards getting the delegates needed to win the gop

nomination on a first ballot. and he raised the stakes on tomorrow's outcome over the weekend. >> if we win indiana, it's over okay? >> however, it is the explicit language he used when discussing america's trade with china has raising eyebrows. >> we can't continue to allow china to rape our country, and that's what they're doing. it's the greatest theft in the history of the world. >> those comments came after massive crowds of protesters disrupted the california republican convention this weekend, forcing trump to scale a wall to get to his own event. trump had this to say about the protests that have followed him throughout california. >> we had a crowd, 31,000 people the other day. that's where they had some little problems outside where these thugs were jumping on police cars. you know, you have a thug like that bounding the car, causing, you know, totalling almost the car. he's jumping on the roof. and the roof is caved in and the

hood. you know, you've got to be tough. you can't let people do that. you can't let people do that. i mean, this guy should be put in jail for five years and he'll never do it again, i promise. >> now, that all comes after ted cruz enlisted the support of 82-year-old former california governor pete wilson. he and wilson told gop activists that failure to stop trump could result in the loss of both houses of congress. cruz also laid the future of the republic at the feet of indiana voters last night. >> across this nation, americans are asking that indiana bring common sense and good judgment to save this country from the path that we are barrelling down. i believe in the people of the hoosier state. i believe in the men and women gathered here and the goodness of the american people that we will not give into evil. >> indiana governor mike pence has also endorsed cruz ahead of the primary in his state. this morning pence published an

op-ed in "the indianapolis star" standing by his endorsement. pence will appear alongside cruz in indiana later today. meanwhile, heidi cruz may have gotten her husband in hot water when she told a crowd "ted is an immigrant. he is hispanic. he can unify this party" to which trump very quickly pounced. >> is an immigrant. and that's what i've been saying! except a lot of people -- i think she was trying to say -- she was trying to put the little bit of a latin turn on it. he was born in canada, folks. >> cruz also refused to answer "meet the press" moderator chuck todd's nine attempts to get cruz to answer whether he would support trump as the nominee. >> don't you think it's important to take a stand? you just said it's a time for choosing. if it's a time for choosing, say it. for him or against him as the nominee? it's a time for choosing, is it not? >> chuck, you're welcome to lobby for support for trump as much as possible. we are going to beat trump because trump's winning the nomination loses the country.

>> don't you think republican voters -- >> and i am not willing to give up on american. i'm not willing to give up on america. >> but if you care this much about it, don't you think you saying i can't support him if he's the nominee doesn't light a fire and send a sense of urgency to the republican party? >> as for the democrats, bernie sanders for the first time is making the argument that if clinton clinches the nomination with superdelegates and not with pledged delegates, there will be a contested contest at the convention. after a week of apparent shifting toward how he would try to influence the democratic party platform, sanders came out guns blazing on delegate math and switching superdelegates' preferences. he is determined to fight on for the democratic nomination. as for hillary clinton, she held one of her first campaign events in indiana this weekend. she continued her pivot toward the general and did not hold back attacking her republican opponents. clinton barely mentioned sanders. instead, though, she talked about the violence at trump's events. our latest poll out of iof indi

finds clinton leading. sanders predicted a win at an event in south bend last night. this weekend president obama made his last appearance at the white house correspondents' dinner. he took a bow and threw in some of his best lines yet. >> is this dinner too tacky for the donald? but in fairness, he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world. miss sweden. miss argentina. miss azerbaijan. and with that, i just have two more words to say. obama out. >> with that, he dropped the mike. we're going to move on to this. a massive fire destroyed an historic church in new york city. it all happened just hours after more than 700 members of the serbian orthodox cathedral celebrated easter. luckily the cathedral which was originally designed in 1850 was empty when the fire started. the building's caretaker

suffered minor injuries. one parishioners said the church meant the world to the serbian community and that, quote, my heart is completely broken. puerto rico is set to default on debt payments at the end of business today. home to over 3.5 million u.s. citizens, puerto rico is about to miss a $422 million payment today. the u.s. territory has a total debt of more than $70 billion. puerto rico has been plagued by high unemployment and crushing poverty. a bill to help has stalled in congress. another payment of more than $700 million is due in july. massive protests by hundreds of anti-government activists in iraq have ended. those protests included an occupation of iraq's parliament building. it ended sunday as they peacefully exited the so-called green zone. this came shortly after iraq's prime minister ordered the arrest of demonstrators who sparked a state of emergency. roads to and from baghdad have also been reopened. as the protests waned, the iraqi prime minister appeared in public flanked by heavy security.

and this was viewed as an encouraging sign to u.s. officials. the protests started after a popular shiite cleric called on supporters to pressure the u.s.-backed government to introduce reforms. there is some fear, though, that the turmoil could hamper the continued fight against isis. on the fifth anniversary of the raid that killed osama bin laden, cia director john brennan spoke exclusively to nbc's chuck todd on "meet the press." he was asked about the 28 pages of a congressional investigation may indicate saudi arabia's potential role in the 9/11 attacks. here's what he had to say. >> i think there's a combination of things that are accurate and inaccurate. and i think the 9/11 commission took that inquiry and those 28 pages or so and followed through on the investigation. and they came out with a very clear judgment that there was no evidence that indicated that the saudi government as an institution or saudi officials individually had provided financial support to al qaeda. let's get down to business with cnbc's landon dowdy. good morning. >> reporter: good monday morning

well, heavy rain was the story over the weekend. brought some serious flooding throughout the southwest portions of louisiana, especially lake charles. caused major destruction, stalled vehicles, stranded residents. if you saw any of the pictures at a jazz fest near new orleans, that was a washout, too. it was like a river going through the middle of the jazz fest. this morning unfortunately more rain in this flooded area. rivers are already at minor to moderate flood stages heading into major flood stages. so we're not done throughout this region. severe thunderstorm watch until 9:00 a.m. this morning. maybe large hail especially between alexandria and lake charles and a few strong ones popping up to the north of the houston area. in general in this region, we will pick up up to an inch of rain today, maybe up to three inches.

up around jack so, you could get some of the heavier rainfall. then later this afternoon, we'll have to watch out for the severe weather threat in the mid-atlantic region. the sun will come out finally. it will get warm and it's humid. 19 million people at risk of severe storms mostly north carolina, virginia up to washington. this morning there's really no issues whatsoever. as we go through the afternoon, about 3:00 to 4:00, showers and storms will pop up. the highest concentration of those storms over virginia, north carolina, even south carolina towards atlanta will be right around 9:00 to 10:00 this evening. strong storms on the east coast. and in new england, it is still cold and dreary. it wasn't a nice weekend either. >> come on, summer. bring it fast. >> not yet. not this week. >> all right, thank you. thousands of students in detroit will be staying home today after teachers across 43 public schools called it quits for the day. >> we are calling for a universal sickout on monday, may 2nd. while we recognize that this puts detroit's parents and

2017 because she's decided to take a gap year after graduating high school this spring. the democratic fight for the presidential nomination is starting to look like the republicans. bernie sanders vowing in no uncertain terms to have a contested convention this summer as he urged superdelegates to join his side. >> it is virtually impossible for secretary clinton to reach the majority of convention delegates by june 14th with pledged delegates alone. she will need superdelegates to take her over the top at the convention in philadelphia. in other words, the convention will be a contested contest. finally, president obama delivered his roast at the annual white house correspondents' dinner, and there wasn't a topic left untouched. he mocked the media, the rnc and, of course, donald trump. >> you all look great.
