all in their decision on who to back. 22% called it a major factor. with the indiana primary just one day away, ted cruz is continuing his make-or-break stand to stop donald trump. cruz is barnstorming the hoosier state today with two appearances alongside republican governor mike pence who heaped praise on trump before backing cruz on friday. >> i like and respect all three of the republican candidates in the field. i particularly want to commend donald trump who i think has given voice to the frustration of millions of working americans with a lack of progress in washington, d.c., and i'm also particularly grateful that donald trump has taken a strong stand for hoosier jobs when we saw jobs at the carrier company abruptly announce leaving indiana, not for another state, but for mexico. i'm grateful. i've come to my decision about who i'm supporting, and i'm not

against anybody, but i will be voting for ted cruz. >> look, i have bobby knight's endorsement. we go around. in fact, i'm going right now after this show, i'm going to indiana. we're going to have bobby knight. we're going to have other people that are unbelievable. and by the way, if you really take a look at mike pence, i think he gave me more of an endorsement than he gave cruz. he started off with donald trump and what a great job he's done. look, his donors and special interests obviously made him give an endorsement. but you know, chris, because you've covered it, most people think it was more of an endorsement for me than it was for cruz. it was the weakest endorsement anyone has seen. >> with donald trump nearing the threshold of 1,000 delegates and poised for a decisive win tomorrow, some republicans are warming to the idea of the billionaire as their nominee. former utah governor and president obama's ambassador to china, jon huntsman, told politico, quote, we've had

enough introparty fighting. now's the time to stitch together a winning coalition. and it's been clear almost from the beginning that donald trump has the ability to assemble a nontraditional bloc of supporters. the ability to cut across traditional party boundaries will be key and trump is in a much better position to achieve that. on friday marco rubio said trump's performance has improved significantly in recent weeks. and earlier comments that he would unite behind him if nominated. >> senator, if indeed it is donald trump, will you support him? >> yeah, i've always said i'm going to support the republican nominee, and that's especially true now that it's apparent that hillary clinton is going to be the democratic candidate. >> but some republicans are still expressing reservations about trump. in an interview yesterday, senator lindsey graham took his friend john boehner to task for comments favoring trump over cruz. >> there's a civil war going on in the republican party, obviously. john and i are very close friends, but he's embracing donald trump, and i am not.

why? because i believe donald trump's foreign policy's isolationism will lead to another 9/11. >> trump responded to the south carolina republican on twitter. quote, why don't they say that i ran him out of the race like a little boy, and in the end, he had no support? meanwhile, despite his unity pledge last summer, ted cruz refused to say whether he will support donald trump if he is the nominee. and trump discussed what party unity means to him. >> don't you think it's important to take a stand? you just said it's a time for choosing. if it's a time for choosing, say it. for him or against him as the nominee? it's a time for choosing, is it not? >> chuck, you're welcome to lobby for support for trump as much as possible. we are going to beat trump because trump's winning the nomination loses the country. >> don't you think republican voters -- >> and i am not willing to give up on america. i'm not willing to give up on america. >> but if you care this much about it, don't you think you saying, i can't support him if he's the nominee, doesn't light

watched him on television knocking me. does he want to endorse me? who knows? i don't care. it's not going to have any impact on whether or not we beat hillary clinton. it's not going to have any impact. >> the clashes between donald trump and hillary clinton are heating up. trump tweeted friday, "crooked hillary clinton, perhaps the most dishonest person to have ever run for the presidency is also one of the all-time great enablers!" the candidates traded responses over the weekend. >> you know, remember, i -- i have a lot of experience dealing with men who sometimes get off the reservation in the way they behave and how they speak. i'm not going to deal with their temper tantrums or their bullying or their efforts to try to provoke me. he can say whatever he wants to say about me. i could really care less. i'm going to stand up for what i think the american people need and want in the next president.

>> she said, i'm used to dealing with -- and what was the word? go ahead. she used a certain word. certain type of men. >> off the reservation. >> men that are off the reservation. i said to myself, that's a horrible expression. now if i would have used that expression maybe in the opposite form, it would have been a front-payable story. she uses it, she gets away with it. that's a very demeaning remark to men. >> and last night, clinton swung back at trump while speaking to the naacp convention in detroit, saying trump puts president obama's legacy in danger. >> it was a tremendous honor to serve in president obama's administration. now america is deciding who will succeed him. the leading republican contender is the man who led the insidious birther movement to discredit the president's citizenship. and when he was asked in a national television interview to

disavow david duke and other white supremacists who are supporting his campaign, he played coy. we cannot let barack obama's legacy fall into donald trump's hands! >> donald trump almost didn't make his appearance at the california republican state convention on friday because of protesters who blocked his motorcade's entrance. they later tried to storm the building but were blocked by police. but trump's security found a way around the obstacle, pulling off the highway and leading the candidate and his aides over a median to a back entrance. trump later tweeted saying the protesters at the event, quote, were thugs and criminals. he also called them professionals who, quote, should be dealt with strongly by law enforcement. and he had this to say inside the event. >> that was not the easiest entrance i've ever made.

my wife called. she said, there are helicopters following you, and then we went under a fence and through a fence. oh, boy, felt like i was crossing the border, actually, you know? i was crossing the border. but i got here. >> meanwhile, bernie sanders marked the one-year anniversary of his presidential bid yesterday by predicting this summer's democratic convention would be contested. despite hillary clinton's dramatic lead in delegates, sanders insisted clinton still needs superdelegates to take her over the top. >> it is virtually impossible for secretary clinton to reach the majority of convention delegates by june 14th with pledged delegates alone. she will need superdelegates to take her over the top at the convention in philadelphia. in other words, the convention will be a contested contest.

for us to win the majority of pledged delegates, we need to win 710 out of the remaining 1,083. that is 65% of the remaining pledged delegates. that is admittedly -- and i do not deny it for a second -- a tough road to climb, but it is not an impossible road to climb. >> sanders's comment came the same day his campaign reported a 40% decline in fund-raising for april. to just under $26 million from $46 million the month before. last week sanders revealed he would be laying off some 255 campaign workers. as for the democrats in tomorrow's indiana primary, only four points separate hillary clinton and senator bernie sanders. 50% for clinton to 46% for sanders. and looking ahead to a general election matchup, clinton trails donald trump by seven points in the hoosier state.

48-41% while trump and sanders effectively tie in indiana with the republican up by just one point, 47%, to 46%. also in the headlines this morning, a massive fire destroyed an historic church in new york city. it happened just hours after more than 700 members of the serbian orthodox cathedral celebrated easter. the cathedral which was built in early 1850s was empty when the fire started. the building's caretaker suffered minor injuries. one parishioner said the church meant the world to the serbian community and that, quote, my heart is completely broken. a day of peaceful protests in support of workers and immigration rights turned violent yesterday as may day erupted into mayhem in seattle. five police officers were injured, and at least nine people were arrested after a group of anti-capitalist demonstrators hurled rocks, bottles and even molotov cocktails shattering windows. the city's mayor, ed murray,

blamed the trouble which he called senseless on a, quote, different crowd from those attending a peaceful may day march earlier in the day. now to the unprecedented show of defiance in the capital of iraq. on saturday, anti-government protesters breached baghdad's heavily fortified green zone before ransacking and occupying the iraqi parliament. it was a major escalation in the political crisis that's been simmering for months and came just days after vice president biden's unannounced visit to the city. protesters demanded the resignations of top iraqi leader s and new elections before ending their sit-in 24 hours later. let's turn to business now where puerto rico's spiraling debt crisis got worse yesterday after governor padilla announced the island would not make a nearly $370 million payment due its creditors today. cnbc's luiza joins us live from london with more. luiza, where does that leave the

island today? >> reporter: well, in dire straits, basically. i mean, the governor of puerto rico signed this memorandum over the weekend on the debt. he did that on saturday. it's the largest default so far that we're looking at for the island. the governor also reviewing his appeal, and renewing that to u.s. congress to try to get them to help them to address this massive debt pileup they're dealing with. in total, it's $70 billion of debt that they have to deal with. and as you say, they are set to default on these $370 million of that debt payment today. so it's not good for puerto rico. halliburton and baker hughes, they're scrapping a massive merger, $28 billion. that's what the merger would have been worth because of opposition coming from the antitrust regulators. you've heard it before this pier worry is that they'd be pushing prices higher because essentially you'd have the second and third largest oil services companies in the world that would be tying up together. and that could lead to some issues there. so the justice department, they filed a lawsuit to stop this deal from going through last

month. it's not the first time that they've done that over the course just over this past year. we've seen, for example, comcast trying to take over time warner cable. that didn't happen. they managed to challenge that deal. wanting to sell its appliance business to electroluxe. there is a breakout fee of $3.5 billion that halliburton has to pay baker hughes now, given that the deal isn't going to be happening. that's one that we're still continuing to watch, jonathan. other than that, it's a holiday here in london. bank holiday. back to you. >> well, i would say enjoy your holiday, but you're working. >> no rest for the wicked, right? >> right. thank you. also in puerto rico, the first american death from the zika virus. the cdc says a 70-year-old man from the island had a severe immune reaction from the virus. experts say this is a rare complication and does not indicate the virus is getting stronger. the obama administration says it will provide $5 million to puerto rican health clinics to

help combat the virus. potentially every public school could be closed in detroit today after the teachers union urged teachers to call out sick. this comes after officials announced that teachers may not get paid after june 30th unless the state legislature sends more money to the district. with 97 schools in the district, a shutdown could affect more than 46,000 students. and still ahead on "way too early," the clinton -- hillary clinton campaign hits back at donald trump's woman card attack in a very literal way makes a few bucks to boot. that plus bill karins has a check on weather when "way too early" comes right back.

and turning to the ice, washington capitals' defenseman brooks orpik was suspended three games for this late hit to the head of pittsburgh penguins' defenseman olli mata saturday night. orpik will miss games three, four and five in the series. orpik hit mata in the head four minutes into game two and was given a two-minute minor penalty for interference. mata left the game and did not return. nhl director of player safety patrick burke said this hit was forceful, excessively high and late. that series is tied 1-1. let's get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. bill. >> good morning, jonathan. you got a chance of severe thunderstorms later today in d.c. >> oh. >> keep an eye to the sky a little late today. over the weekend if you saw any of the pictures from louisiana, they just got nailed with one thunderstorm complex after another. the pga tour event, i think they're still in the third

round. it's amazing. they had rainout just about every single day at one point or another. a lot of water where it's not supposed to be. rivers at major flooding in some spots. and jazz fest was just a huge, muddy mess around new orleans this weekend. unfortunately this area, another band of rain. this should be the last one, though. numerous thunderstorms here outside of houston. severe thunderstorm watch for shreveport, alexandria, lake charles. all the way up to little rock. there's even a line of storms about to approach the dallas area. some lightning with that, too. this isn't severe stuff. you're not seeing tornadoes. but this much rainfall is really ground super saturated at this point. won't take much to get additional flash flooding from houston over just north of new orleans. jackson northwards, this is where the rain will be this afternoon. the possibility of one to two inches. as i mentioned to jonathan, about 19 million people are at risk of severe storms today. this goes from the pennsylvania/maryland border down through d.c. and the nation's capital, richmond, roanoke, charlotte, areas from
