competitor. >> i understand that secretary clinton thinks this campaign is over. i have some bad news for her. all right, good morning, it's wednesday, may 4th. i'm sam stein. as the kids like to say, may the force be with you. yes, i'm being held hostage by show's producers. donald trump hasn't officially won the nomination, but this morning msnbc is calling him the likely nominee. he won the seventh straight state last night claiming 53% of the vote in indiana. it was a knockout blow to senator ted cruz who promptly suspended his campaign for the
2:31 am
white house. it rests in part with john kasich who is still clinging to the highly unlikely if not impossible presidential bid. bernie sanders meanwhile walked away the winner in indiana taking 53% of the vote to beat hillary clinton. still with her commanding lead in delegates the former secretary of state appears poised to ultimately lock down the nomination even while losing some states in a prolonged and potentially damaging primary battle. ted cruz and supporters put all their chips on indiana, with $6 million on ads in support of him, but despite the spending a last minute endorsement from mike pence and even naming carly fiorina as his running mate, cruz was left to announce the end of his campaign over gasps in the crowd. >> from the beginning, i have said that i would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. tonight, i'm sorry to say --
2:32 am
>> no! >> -- it appears that path has been foreclosed. >> no! >> together, we left it all on the field in indiana. we gave it everything we've got. but the voters chose another path. and so with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long term future of our nation we are suspending our campaign. but hear me now. i am not suspending our fight for liberty. >> just so you understand, ted cruz, i don't know if he likes me or if he doesn't like me, but he's one hell of a competitor. he's a tough, smart guy.
2:33 am
and he has got an amazing future. he's got an amazing future. so i want to congratulate ted and i know how tough it is. it's tough. it's tough. i have had some moments where it was not looking so good and it's not a great feeling. and so i understand how ted feels and heidi and their whole beautiful family. i want to just say though that one tough competitor. >> rather than attend events planned for today in nebraska and washington, senator cruz returned home to houston last night. with his departure from the race, donald trump became, get this, the likely republican standard-bearer this fall. the chairman of the republican national committee reince priebus weighed in, declaring trump the quote, presumptive nominee. a phrase the chairman seemed so
2:34 am
surprised to have to have been typing that he misspelled it at first. the panicked 19-year-old social deputy probably misspelled it. but meanwhile, hillary clinton declared trump the presumptive nominee in a fund-raising appeal and trump's campaign celebrated last night at trump tower with a surprisingly subdued candidate still absorbing the news. talking about uniting the gop and taking on hillary clinton in the fall. >> this has been an amazing evening. i didn't expect this. i didn't expect it and what ted did is really a very brave thing to do. and a great thing to do. because we want to bring unity to the republican party. we have to bring unity. it's so much easier if we have it. we're going after hillary clinton. she will not -- she will not be a great president. she will not be a good president. she will be a poor president. she doesn't understand trade. her husband signed perhaps in
2:35 am
the history of the world the single worst trade deal ever done. it's called nafta. meanwhile, ohio governor john kasich sent his regards to ted cruz last night, tweeting that cruz should be proud of his strong and disciplined campaign and texas is lucky to have you. john weaver responded to the rnc chairman saying it's time to get behind trump writing quote, i appreciate reince and his hard work for the gop but until someone has 1,237 bound delegates there is no presumptive nominee. california, here we come. as indiana went to the polls trump gave voters a taste of just how unconventional a candidate he can be. he and ted cruz traded their toughest barbs to date, beginning with trump attacking cruz's father with a discredited tabloid story linking the cuban immigrant to lee harvey oswald.
2:36 am
the assassin of president john f. kennedy. this was ridiculous. >> his father was with lee harvey oswald prior to oswald being -- you know, shot. i mean, the whole thing is ridiculous. what is this, right prior to his being shot and nobody brings it up. what was he doing with lee harvey oswald shortly before the death -- before the shooting? >> crazy. >> it's horrible. >> donald trump alleges that my dad was involved in assassinating jfk. now, let's be clear. this is nuts. i want to tell you what i really think of trump. this man is a pathological liar. he doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. he lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth. he combines it with being a narcissist. a narcissist at a level i don't think this country has ever seen. the man is utterly amoral. morality does not exist for him.
2:37 am
donald will betray his supporters on every issue. listen, donald trump is a serial if i landerer and he boasts about it. he's proud of being a serial philanderer. i want everyone to think of your teenage kids. the president of the united states talks about how great it is to commit adultery, how proud he is. i'll tell you as the father of two young girls, the idea of our daughters coming home and repeating any word that man says horrifies me. that is not who america is. >> trump repeated his claim about cruz's father in another radio interview. and just moments after the polls closed he tweeted, quote, wow, lyin' ted went wacko today. made all sorts of crazy charge, can't function under pressure. not very presidential and sad, naturally. cruz wasn't the only target of donald trump's barbs. he went after hillary clinton

with the focus on coal miners' jobs in appalachia. yesterday, clinton wrapped up a two day tour of the region where democrats have struggled in recent elections. clinton grappled with her comments from march when she said in part, quote, we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business. those words attracted protests at her stop there. and the day before in west virginia. >> here in ohio a few weeks ago during the ohio primary it sounded like i said something differently about coal miner jobs. to put it plainly i misspoke. it's one reason i took this trip to say it directly to the people affected, to make sure you know where i stand because i would never disrespect the people here. among the 100,000 miners who died in the last century, we have lost miners in this century too. 29 brave men who perished at the upper big branch mine. the owner of that mine, don

blankenship had neglected workers' safety for years. we need to strengthen those laws and hold executives who neglect workers' health and safety to account. by the way, i heard mr. blankenship was outside my event yesterday. protesting me. well, if donald trump wants the support of someone like that he can have it. >> we're going to get those miners back to work. i'll tell you what, we're going to get those miners back to work. we're not going to be hillary clinton and i watched her three or four weeks ago when she was talking about the miners as if they were just numbers and she was talking about she wants the mines closed and she will never let them work again. let me tell you the miners in west virginia and pennsylvania which was so great to me last week and ohio and all over they're going to start to work
2:40 am
again. believe me. you're going to be proud again to be miners. for bernie sanders, victory in indiana means his campaign will go on. despite long shot chances of actually winning the nomination. sanders beat hillary clinton by a roughly five point margin. that was hardly enough to dent her massive delegate lead. despite that the only concession from sanders last night was that his path is narrow. >> i understand that secretary clinton thinks that this campaign is over. i've got some bad news for her. i sense a great deal of momentum. i sense some great victories coming and i think that while the path is narrow, and i do not deny for that moment, i think we can pull off one of the great political upsets in the history of the united states. i have no doubt, zero doubt, that what we have done in this campaign, what we are doing now and what we will do in the next six weeks is good for the democratic party and it will
2:41 am
result in a higher voter turnout. now as we mentioned earlier, hillary clinton spent the day in west virginia and ohio where she is increasingly turning her attention to the general election. in an interview with msnbc's andrea mitchell, clinton addressed whether she was prepared for the coming attacks by donald trump as well as whether she thinks the republican front-runner is qualified for the commander in chief. >> people have been dumping stuff on me for 25 years. and here i am on the brink of being the first woman nominated by a national party to run for president, which is an extraordinary honor and historic responsibility. when i think of running against him, i'm going to stay focused on the issues that are going to make a difference in people's lives because i think this is a change election. i can't imagine more change than having the first woman president and having someone with a long record of working to even the odds for people. i'm not going to be responding to his every insult and attack.
2:42 am
that is just not what i think this election will eventually come down to. >> he has given no indication that he understands the gravity of responsibilities that go with being commander in chief and that will be a big part of my campaign because at some point, he's going to have to be held to the standard we hold anybody running for president and commander in chief. what is it you know, what is it you have done, what is it you are proposing to do as president and commander in chief? so far, we haven't seen any of that. all right. moving away from politics to another big story we're following this morning. concerning music superstar prince. an attorney for a california doctor tells the "minneapolis star tribune" that prince died one day before he was scheduled to meet with his client in an effort to beat an alleged addiction to pain killers. dr. howard cornfield runs the inpatient clinic recovery
