a source tells nbc kasich decided he didn't want to go raise money to simply drop out two weeks later. so before his wife and two daughters, the governor reflected on his path. >> i have always said that the lord has a purpose for me as he has for everyone. and as i suspend my campaign today, i have renewed faith, deeper faith, that the lord will show me the way forward and fulfill the purpose of my life. >> with only one of the 17 republican candidates left standing, the party reacted yesterday, tweeting thank you to the entire republican field for a hard fought race. the party is better for your efforts. in an interview with lester holt for "nightly news," trump discussed if he felt the bruising primary race took a toll on him. >> your negatives are staggering, disapproval 69% for women. latinos, 79%. people under 34, 75% disapprove.

how much of that is self-inflicted by some of the rhetoric from the primary campaign and how do you heal that while still respecting those who got you here? >> well, the highly rasmussen poll came out and i'm 49 to 31 up over hillary clinton. i don't know what you're talking about with the negatives. now, i will say, i think i'll do very well with women and as you know in the last seven states i won in women, i won with african americans and won with hispan hispanics. >> so you discard all these numbers? >> i don't discard anything. i mean, i just started. i just got it 24 hours ago. >> meanwhile, donald trump is giving a preview of what the rest of the campaign and administration will look like. yesterday, trump told "the wall street journal" he won't be completely self-funding in the general election. in the past, trump has pledged to spend $100 million on his campaign. he has lent it 36 of the

$46 million, raising $12 million, mostly in small donations. on "nightly news," trump said he'll work with the rnc to ultimately raise as much as $1 billion. meanwhile, trump is weighing his vice presidential options with nikki haley saying count her out. but leaning towards someone experienced in politics trump said he will be vetting another governor -- john kasich. >> i think john will be very helpful. >> he says he doesn't want to be a vice president. >> that could be. >> would he be someone you're interested in vetting? >> i would be interested in vetting john. i like john. i have gotten along with him well. >> trump told "the new york times" yesterday what some of his governoring priorities will be. he says that within the first 100 days of administration, he will have designed the wall on the mexican border, put the muslim immigration ban in place, and begun an audit of the federal reserve and repeal of the affordable care act. leaders from across the republican party reacted to

donald trump's takeover yesterday. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell put out a statement of support, saying that trump has the opportunity and obligation to unite our party around our goals. he was joined in full throat endorsements from richard byrd, governor fallon of oklahoma and mike huckabee. three candidates up for re-election this said they'd back the nominee as did john boehner and john elder who said they'd back him. meanwhile the club for growth backed off its threat to withhold support from anyone backing trump. other republicans remain skeptical for first time since leaving office. george h.w. bush plans to stay silent in the white house race. a spokesman for george w. bush confirmed he had to plans to participate in or comment on the race as well. a spokesperson for kelly ayotte of new hampshire said she'll support, but isn't planning to

endorse anyone this cycle. some of her colleagues shared their reasons for hesitating personally. >> i don't support all of trump's positions. i'm not voting for hillary. >> so you will vote for trump? i presume that's what you're saying? >> i said i'd vote against hillary. >> a ban on muslims, the religious test for those entering the country, i cannot see support for a republican nominee who would do that. he may well back away. i certainly hope he does. for years, he was a birther. still is as far as i know. somebody who believes that the president was not born here. but rather in kenya. that does go to his judgment. if there was a case of hoping that a candidate doesn't keep his campaign promises i guess this is one. >> donald trump has the opportunity to unite the party, but if he's going to build that wall that he keeps talking about, he's going to have to mend a lot offenses. -- of fences. he has to stop with the

gratuitous personal insults. he's going to have to go beyond saying he wants to make america great again. he's going to have to articulate what a trump presidency would look like. >> then there are the flatout republican nos to donald trump with one opening the door to a third party vote. senator ben sasse posted to twitter last night, at this point i'd happily support a moderate. would be more conservative than the two dishonest liberals now leading the republicans and democrats. and charlie baker had this to say. >> there are a number of issues i disagree vehemently disagree with mr. trump on and i question if he has the temperament to serve as president. i won't vote for mr. trump. i sincerely doubt i'll be voting for hillary clinton either. hillary clinton tweeted a web video full of republicans slamming the presumptive nominee and here's part of it.

blustering, bullying guy who -- who has knocked out of the way all the republicans because they were just dumb founded. they didn't know how to deal with him. they couldn't take him on the issues because they basically agreed with him and didn't know how to counterpunch. president obama went to flint, michigan, and he took a few sips of the filtered water to show it's safe to drink. after the meeting the president addressed a crowd of flint residents and assured them that the federal government will make sure the recovery is completed. michigan governor rick snyder whose administration has taken some public blame for the lead tainted water also addressed the crowd and let's just say he was not well received. >> i want to thank him for coming here today. this is an important moment to show how we can move forward to work together to say you deserve better and to bring that to the

city of flint. both short term and long term. so thank you for the opportunity to come share a few thoughts with you today. i look forward to the president's comments and again i thank you. thank you. >> i do think that part of what contributed to this crisis was a broader mindset. it's an ideology that undervalues the common good. we especially underinvest when the communities that are put at risk are poor. you know, that attitude is as corrosive to our democracy as the stuff that resulted in lead in your water. >> two michigan state regulators and a flint water official have been charged. governor snyder will be a guest on "morning joe" later on.

a state of emergency has been declared in alberta, canada, where an out of control wildfire has scorched more than 1,800 acres of land, devouring neighborhoods in ft. mcmurray. 80,000 residents were safely evacuated. at least 1,600 homes and businesses have been torched and some 200 firefighters try to contain its all. as the flames span south, those in neighboring areas have fled their homes. the pentagon has released new information on the navy s.e.a.l. who was killed while fighting isis in iraq on tuesday. at the time of his death, officials say charlie keating iv was part of a quick reaction force that was responding to an attack on u.s. and kurdish forces just north of mosul. pentagon officials say the isis attack was massive and well planned. involving 125 isis fighters in 20 vehicles and that it raged for hours. on the ground, u.s. trainers and peshmerga forces, in the air 11 u.s. airplanes and drones launched air strikes.

three peshmerga fighters were killed and the 60 isis fighter. for the navy s.e.a.l., his mother said he died doing what he loved. let's turn to business and stocks fell again yesterday as investors show concern over the global oil glut and tomorrow's jobs report. nancy hulgrave, bring us up to speed on this thursday. >> well, that's right. it was two straight days of losses for stocks in the u.s. and in fact, may so far has not been very good. there's that saying sell in may go away. we are looking at u.s. futures pointing higher. you mentioned the oil price there. oil getting a big move to the upside today. due to some wildfires in alberta, canada. other situation going on in libyas with tensions moving up there. as you mentioned data continues to be in focus and weakness in the adp private payrolls tomorrow. a big day to point to is the

nonfarm payroll to report tomorrow. also, tesla, that stock popping up 4% after hours. this comes despite reporting a loss that was actually better than many expected. tesla had a bullish forecast and that comes down to production numbers there. expecting to make 500,000 cars by 2018. that was moved up from creating that number by 2020. so that stock gets a nice bounce. this despite concerns earlier in the day about two top executives leaving the company. some sad news to report. former senator from utah bob bennett has died. he served in the senate from 1992 and stayed longer than the two terms he had promised. he was a political moderate, he supported the bank bailout. and he worked on his own health care bill that would require americans to buy health care in the run-up to obamacare. he was the first incumbent senate republican to be ousted by a tea party member, in his

case, mike lee. here he is at the utah convention where he finished a dismal third despite the backing of mitt romney. >> it's very clear that some of the votes that i have cast have added to the toxic environment. looking back on them with one or two minor exceptions, i wouldn't have cast any of them any differently. even if i had known at the time they were going to cost me my career. now at the risk of getting a little emotional, i want to thank my staff. i get dewey eyed at the dedication of parking lot so -- stand up for me and defend the votes i have cast. even when some of them may have advised me against them. it has been a major highlight of the campaign. >> a spokes woman says he died wednesday from complications of

"the new york times" reports this morning that it appears the music icon shielded a potential problem with pain pills from some of his closest friends. and that he told his lawyer, quote, i'm doing perfect, two days after his plane made that emergency landing. nbc's stephanie gosk has more on help that was sent hours before

he died. >> reporter: the urgent call for help came the night before prince died. a representative of the pop star reached out to dr. howard kornfeld. a drug addiction specialist in california. according to the doctor's minneapolis attorney. >> he set into motion a plan to deal with what he felt was a life saving mission. >> reporter: kornfeld made prince an appointment with a local doctor for the next day and sent his son who is not an md on an overnight flight to meet with the musician and discuss the california addiction clinic recovery without walls. but according to the attorney, when andrew kornfeld was brought here to paisley park, no one could find prince. so they started searching. >> andrew heard the screams and went to the elevator where he saw that prince was unconscious. >> reporter: andrew called 911. >> medical, paisley park. >> reporter: when investigators arrived, andrew handed over buprenorphine, a drug used to
