face. everything i say and do folks, i do. >> we'll have exclusive new details on hillary's plan to defeat the donald from kristen welker. we begin with our top story. republicans grappling with the reality of trump. party leaders all over the map yesterday sending some very mixed signals about how they'll deal with their party's likely nominee. in new hampshire, for instance, senator kelly ayotte is in a fierce re-election battle. she put out a statement saying she'll support donald trump but not endorse him. senator majority leader mitch mcconnell confirming he'll support trump as the nominee but not saying much more than that. quote, i have committed to supporting the nominee chosen by republican voters, and donald trump, the presumptive nominee is now on the verge of clinching that nomination. the statement yesterday from mitch mcconnell.

trump got a more full throated endorsement from the mike huckabee. he said he's all in for donald trump's fall campaign. the oklahoma governor mary fallon saying she'd be open to joining trump's ticket. i've not had any direct contact with mr. trump, but i'd be very honored if i were to receive a call saying i need you to help make america great again. jacob rascon is here to give us the latest the vp talk. and kasie hunt to help us with the fine line republicans are treading as they deal with trump as their nominee. this question of the veep stakes. let's start with you on that. interesting, mary fallon, the governor of oklahoma seems open to it. john kasich who got out of the race yesterday, we're hearing a lot about that. who is on the list? who is not on the list? what do we know? >> governor fallon is one of the only ones who have said they're

open to that. trump's staff is putting together a committee. ben carson is on that committee helping to choose. trump himself says most important is government experience, political experience, and he says chemistry and gives joe biden as a model when obama picked him. very interesting that he talks about chemistry, considering what he said today to cnbc about his 17 former rivals and aye chance that one of them would be his pick. take a listen. >> will it be from that group of people that also ran for president? >> well, i would say probably a 40% chance within the group. i've gotten to be friends with a lot of those people and i suppose enemies with a couple. i've gotten to be friends with quite a few. there's a good 40% chance. >> that would be news that he's friends with many of them. according to what we've seen he's been only friends with one or two. mike huckabee one of those.

some of the names tossed around, new mexico governor susanna martinez, nikki haley, senator rob corbin from ohio, marco rubio's name has been floated. he has said the most recent thing about trump is that trump has turned it around and done very well in the last several weeks. interesting to see where that goes. and john kasich, trump said he's rising rapidly on the short list. his staff has said repeatedly there's zero chance that governor kasich, and he himself has said zero chance he'd want to be on that list. >> jacob rascon outside of trump tower, thanks for that. kasie hunt with more on the reaction from republicans to their presumptive nominee to donald trump. we're seeing in a statement there, kelly ayotte will support him, not endorse him. i'm trying to figure out what that means. that speaks to the fixed signals

we're hearing from republicans. >> there are contortions at this point. it gives you a window into what the next couple of months are going to look like especially for republicans in tough races coming up in the fall. that senate math this time around. it was difficult for democrats in 2014. it's difficult for republicans now. and democrats feel they've expanded that map. if you think about people like john mccain in arizona, pat toomey in pennsylvania, kelly ayotte in new hampshire, every single time donald trump, if he continues to make some of thee inflammatory remarks he's made throughout the primary, they'll all be asked about it and they feel he's likely to be a drag on their chances. now you are seeing them be careful to make sure they say that they support the party's nominee. these candidates need the republican party. and there's also an open question about whether or not trump will turn out to be a

different type of candidate than many expect. all the lessons of history would tell all these candidates someone who says these things about women would make essentially them unelectable. donald trump has surprised time after time. he convinced republican voters to get on board with him. you've seen those polling numbers change over time. i think it's going to be a difficult period. susan collins, one of the more moderate republican members of the senate explained it this way on the radio. >> donald trump has the opportunity to unite the party, but if he's going to build that wall that he keeps talking about, he's going to have to mend a lot of fences. he's going to have to stop with the gratuitous personal insults. and he's going to have to go beyond saying he wants to make america great again. he's going to have to articulate what a trump presidency would look like.

>> of course, if he doesn't do those things, he may lose people like susan collins. he's already lost ben sass, the senator from nebraska out there calling to draft a third party candidate. the question, are there enough voters behind politicians like that for their to be a viable other option, anti-trump option that continues to exist in the republican party. >> kasie hunt, thanks for that. let's turn to katie packer, the founder of our principles pac, someone in that never trump camp from the beginning. fast forward to november. you're in that voting booth. hillary clinton, donald trump, any chance you'll end up checking off donald trump's name on that ballot? >> zero chance. zero chance i'll support hillary clinton either. she's a highly unpalatable optsion. >> a third party? >> a third party or write-in. i can't support someone that i think is a child and is really

dangerous for the party and the country. >> mitch mcconnell, he says he's going to support donald trump. you have kelly ayotte. she'll support him, not endorse him. she's going to vote for human. susan collins moving in that direction. maybe the republican party is trying to make piece with this. >> it's a difficult decision. i'm disappointed in anybody that would support him, but everybody has to make their own personal calculation. that's not a place i can go. i admire someone like ben sass who has laid out and even very articulate about why he can't support donald trump. this is somebody who a lot of people just find unpalatable. he's said racist things, sexist things. at the end of the day, he just behaves like a little kid that needs a spanking. >> we talked as this was playing out. and you were hardly alone. you are one of the voices saying

it's not going to happen. there's not going to be a ceiling. he's not going to get the nomination. do you feel you learned something about the republican party? >> his poll numbers have virtually remained unchanged. always the front-runner for the gop nomination. >> he started out like our first poll we looked atting th this yesterday, he was at 1%. >> but within a month or two, he was leading and never really lost that all the way through. a lot of folks thought, he's leading but once people learn about him their eyes will open up. that didn't happen. we had a very divided crime area. by and large that support didn't increase and he did not ever get to a point where he's at a majority of republican primary voters. in 2012, at this point, mitt romney was at like 70%. >> the last seven contests he

broke 50%. >> i'm talking about overall in terms of why the election is today, he does not have a majority of republicans that have voted in this year that have voted for him. he's a candidate going into the convention, a very conflicted party going into the convention. and he still does not have the ski kind of numbers among republican voters that would bode well. typically each party gets over 90% of their own members voting for them. he's got a lot of work to do with republicans before he even starts thinking about independents and soft democrats. >> do you think he'll have trouble, going through some of the names on the vice presidential list. he seems to be talking up the idea of john kasich. do you think he'll have trouble attracting a vp? >> i think a legitimate, strong vp. certainly nobody expected somebody like chris christie to

join his team. i'm sure chris christie would jump at the chance. other folks that have, you know, signaled support for him. but i think somebody that would actually sort of bring in new voters and attract a new kind of voter to his team, i think he'll have real trouble with that. coming up, the republicans may have their presumptive nominee but the democratic primary rolls on, much to the chagrin of the clinton campaign. we'll check the big board and figure out just what it would take after that win in indiana this week. you're starting to hear talk about this again. what would it take for bernie sanders to catch her in the delegate race? we'll show you exactly what the numbers say after indiana. later, donald trump already looking ahead to a contest against hillary clinton insisting he wants the general election to be above board. >> i'd like to see a very high level policy oriented campaign.

cycle. >> the most vulgar person ever to aspire to the presidency. >> a new web video coming from the clinton campaign. trying to set its sights on donald trump now that he's the presumptive republican nominee. as hillary clinton tries to shift to november and zero in on trump she still has the pesky meter of the battle with bernie sanders for the democratic nomination. he got a big win this week in indiana. if you look at the map, he has a lot of other states he's well positioned to win the rest of the way. bernie sanders says don't give up on me yet. i can still pull this out. i got the win in indiana. let's look at where he is and exactly what that means. this is the delegate count. the superdelegates can technically change their mind. what would make their change their minds? bernie sanders keeps saying if he can catch her in the allocated, the pledge delegates, the ones you win in primaries

and caucuses, it would force these superdelegates to change their mind. we see bernie sanders, this has him down 314. what did indiana mean? he got the upset win in indiana. what did that mean for delegates? he got a net gain of seven delegates out of that state. it was a small win. a four-pointer win. he won 45 pledge delegates. hillary clinton won 38. that number dropped to 314. one thing that's a positive for sanders is one state, the state of washington which he won big has not given out its delegates yet. when it does, this 314 will probably drop to about 290. the rest of the way, can sanders erase 290 in the pledge delegate count. this is the big problem when

you're running from behind on the democratic side they give out the dell gots proportionately. if it's a close race your opponent collects a lot of delegates. let's show you how tough this would be. 290 is what he's down by right now. we go to west virginia. let's say he wins the state and nets ten. he gets ten more delegates than hillary clinton gets out of the state. that 290 comes down to 280. kentucky will be this month. looks good there. 280 comes down to 265. oregon is later this month. let's say he nets 20 out of that. 265 comes down to 245. you have these three down here, guam, the virgin islands, puerto rico. let's say he nets another 10. that's 235. and that takes you in to june.

the district of columbia looks tough for him. let's say it's even. he doesn't gain or lose. he needs to make up 235 in all these states. there's a poll in new jersey that has him down by 28 points. if he loses new jersey by 28 with that many delegates, that's 235 will be pushed up near 300. let's say there's an electoral miracle in new jersey and he wins the state narrowly. he gains ten delegates there, ten here, ten year, ten here. these are all very big numbers. that knocks the 235 down to 185. and that would leave the jackpot, california, which has 475 delegates. he'd need to net under an incredibly generous scenario here for bernie sanders, he'd need to net 185 in california.

it would mean he'd probably need about 70 to 75% of the vote in california to pull that off. and again, that's the best case scenario for him the rest of the way. technically, it is possible for bernie sanders to erase that gap and get the lead in the pledge delegates but practically speaking, very hard to see. he'd have to get 75% there. if he loses new jersey, the number gets even higher. that's the delegate math reality on the democratic side. let's bring in my colleagues. kristen welker is in los angeles. hillary clinton is there today. california is on june 7th. chris jansing is in beckly, west virginia. let's start with you, kristen welker in california. so we have the maths here. yes, kristen welker. trying to look not at bernie sanders but at donald trump. what's the strategy here?

>> that's right. just to pick up on that point you made, that's one of the reasons you'll see her here in california in the coming days. what you just mapped out. even though senator sanders' odds are steep, california is the jackpot. the clinton campaign knows it. she'll be spending a lot of time here. her top officials telling me taking on trump is her top priority. one of her supporters saying it's defcon one right now. with each day we're seeing her strategy roll out even more. yesterday she tried to essentially say voters should be afraid of donald trump saying he's a loose cannon and loose cannons tend to misfire. making sure voters remember every single controversial comment he's made about women, about minorities, immigrants. and also she's prepared for the onslaught coming her way. she's vulnerable on issues like e-mails which keep coming up and

donald trump has said her husband's past indiscretions are not off the table. this is her strategy for dealing with that line of attack. take a listen. >> he's made references to your marriage, to your husband. are you -- >> well, he's not the first one. i can't say this often enough. if he wants to go back to the playbook of the 1990s and follow in the footsteps of those who have tried to knock me down and take me out of the political arena, i'm more than happy to have him do that. >> you're ready to do that? >> oh, please. >> we're learning the clinton campaign is ramping up its team at its brooklyn headquarters. adding new staff tlers. marlon marshall is going to oversee all of that. so they are rolling out their strategy both in terms of what she's saying on the campaign trail and also tactically to

take on donald trump. >> kristen welker in los angeles. now let's turn to the sanders side with chris jansing. we run through the delegate math. we're looking at the states, a lot of the states do look like bernie sanders states. he could put a lot of wins on the board over the next month. >> well, he thinks so. certainly west virginia is a place, they don't do a lot of polling here. in the couple of polls done here, he's comfortably ahead. he'll have three events today. it's interesting to watch television here in west virginia because there is a vehemently anti-hillary clinton ad running about her comments about coal miners. it's run by a down ticket race, a conservative running for supreme court justice. and it is on the air all the time. it's important to remember this is a state where bill clinton won easily the two times he ran.

in addition to that, hillary clinton is running against somebody who is against fracking, who has a record you'd think that coal miners and others interested in those issues wouldn't even be close to get approval for. but he is really resonating with this populist message in a state where unemployment is a problem. where the economy is poor. and that's what he's going to be talking about today. so he feels good about this. he feels good about a number of the states coming up. and he is feeling positive. well aware of the math you just laid out. here's his reaction to comments on how high that hill is that he's going to have to climb. >> we have a path toward victory. i admit that it is a narrow path. but we think everybody in this country, people in california and kentucky and west virginia have a right to determine who they want to see as president of the united states and what kind

of agenda they want the democratic party to have. we'll fight for the last vote we can get. >> and he's fighting against donald trump. take a look at this tweet he put out late yesterday. trump must be stopped. we're the best campaign to beat him. he likes to point to those polls that's show him in headto h-to- matchups that he'd beat trump but there's a little thing call the nomination and all those delegates in between now and donald trump. a big rally he had last night. he never mentioned hillary clinton. it was all about donald trump when he mentioned any other candidate. >> interesting. may be a change of tone from bernie sanders. we saw it a couple of weeks ago in new york how direct he was going after hillary clinton. coming up, back to the republican presumptive nominee, donald trump, which leads us to our most important number of the

nominee and they are saying look at the poll numbers with general election voters and independents. he has no chance in the fall. dead on arrival. that takes us to our most important number of the day and that is 1. 1 as is one is where donald trump stood in the first poll taken. the week he announced his presidential candidacy. he was running at 1%. this is where he started out in our poll in the republican primary. at that time jeb bush was number one. scott walker. he didn't even make it out of the summer. rubio in third. carson in double digits. huckabee a factor. donald trump back at 1%. it wasn't just because that's 1%, republicans looked at trump and said we like the guy but just don't know if he's serious. we asked them would you even be

willing to consider voteding for donald trump and two-thirds said, no, won't even consider it. donald trump when you look at the numbers when he entered the race, you said the guy has no chance. we've never seen negative numbers that high for somebody running for a major party's nomination and he turned them around and has become the presumptive republican nominee. took about a month after he entered the rosace. took him about a month to move into first base and survived a number of controversies. or will be the nominee. now what will happen against hillary clinton? clearly, clearly the numbers are terrible for donald trump. this is the newest national poll. trump trailing hillary clinton by 13 points. clearly donald trump goes into the general election as an underdog. it's possible all the skeptics who say donald trump has no chance in the poll, they are

right he's done too much damage, he's alienated too many key groups but it is probably worth remembering when he entered the race for the republican nomination he did not lead. he was back at 1% and the vast majority of republicans said they wouldn't even consider voting for the guy. he turned those numbers around. took him about a month to start getting real traction. the question is can he turn these numbers around? it's too soon. it is too soon. based on what we saw in the republican primary, it's too soon to write him off and say he's dead on arrival in the general election. that's our most important number of the day, one. coming up, the man who is george w. bush's top white house aide andrew card on the news his former boss has no plans to support trump this fall. will he do the same? later, donald trump's words, south american soccer teams are

ticket, here in arizona, with over 30% of the vote being the hispanic vote, no doubt that this may be the race of my life. >> but there are bigger issues at play. steve schmidt, who ran john mccain's presidential campaign in 2008, said republicans have a choice to make. >> the question will now be how many republicans come out and say i love my party but i love my country more? we'll see how many republicans out there that say it is better for hillary clinton to be elected president of the united states, to be the commander in chief than somebody who in their view is not stable. >> andy card was george w. bush's white house chief of staff. thanks for taking a few minutes. the news involving, you worked in both bush administrations. the news involving both of them. george bush 41, a spokesman saying he's retired from politics. briefly came out of retirement

to help jeb. those were exceptions that's proved the rule. he does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign. obviously, it got personal there between donald trump and jeb bush in this campaign. you know them well. is there any chance that they revisit this? could you see them supporting trump at all? >> look, i think donald trump is the one that's going to be in the driver's seat on that. he has to recognize he has the responsibility to be a leader for the party. and i think he is the presumptive nominee but i want him to work to lead our party to victory. we got to hold the senate, hold the house. an awful lot of twork do. make sure the governors get elected. a lot to show that he's commits to success. and he's got to reach out to the former leaders of the party who carry the republican label and demonstrate that he has the maturity to be president of the

united states and leader of the free world. you talk about, he was at 1%. the very first poll in the country that showed him winning was a franklin pierce boston herald poll. now he's probably going to be number one at the republican convention. i'm more focused on the number one baseball team in the division. donald trump has a lot of work to do to earn my vote and the confidence of people who are leaders in the republican party. he needs to lead kelly ayotte to victory and john mccain. alls the candidates that have the courage to put their name on the ballot at republicans. i hope he'll look to have a real team being on the ballot with him in november that will be a great team for america. it's one thing to make america great again but you can't if you don't have a good team. >> it's possible you'll support

donald trump? is that fair to say? >> he's got to demonstrate a little respect for the leaders of the republican party that made a difference to the world and helped lead the united states through some phenomenally difficult times. and ronald reagan, george h.w. bush and george w. bush were three presidents i worked for. i was a witness to how hard it is to be president of the united states and the tough decisions that have to be made. i want him to demonstrate some sympathy, find some empathy and have the courage to be a leader that requires you to be the leader of all the people all the time without trying to be the most popular leader all the time. you have to make tough decisions. i witnessed presidents do that effectively and not only lead the country but the world. >> obviously all the stuff he said about jeb bush. he's called the iraq war the greatest mistake in history. george w. bush had lied the country into iraq.

after putting all that on the record what could he say to demonstrate the respect you're talking about? >> i don't know, but he better find the words. i hope he'll recognize the confidence that comes from people who have been in the job or leaders in the job, members of the cab net that served reagan and president bush and president bush. he should seek their wisdom from people who had to do tough jobs and make difficult decisions because he's auditioning for a job where you can only make tough decisions. presidents never have the luxury of making an easy decision. they make tough decisions and can't do it on a reality tv show. >> donald trump has run through these primaries and emerged as the presumptive nominee. if you had to define the republican party that just embraced donald trump, what is the message the republican party and its voters are sending right now? >> i think donald trump did a great service to the republican

party. he attracted more people to the republican party than have been attracted to it in a long time. generated a lot of eyeballs and ears. he did call attention to the issues and caused people to be part of the debate. i'm a big believer in participatory democracy. also a vehicle for a wake-up call for the republican party and probably washington, d.c. but he's got to demonstrate that it's not just about taking the call. it's about responding to it in a responsible way. he's got to surround himself with people who are knowledgeable. he's got to have the courage to listen to people who may not agree with him but offer wise counsel andship the throw them under the bus because he disagrees with them. >> you have to start thinking ahead to the republican convention, put a platform together. he's put some proposals on the table. the ban on muslims entering the
