"first look" starts right now. good morning. thanks for joining us today. i'm betty nguyen. bombshell revelation, reports suggest that coaches and administrators including joe paterno knew about the sexual abuse allegations against jerry sandusky as early as 1976. the claim emerged in the dispute over whether the university or insurance company should pay penn state's share of about $60 million in settlements with 26 men who say sandusky abused them when they were children. in the newly unsealed court documents the judge wrote in passing that the insurance company claimed that quote, in 1976, the child allegedly reported to psu's head coach joseph paterno he was sexually molested by sandusky. the family issued a statement that read in part because of a single sentence in a court

record of an insurance case, joe paterno's reputation has once again been smeared with the unsubstantiated 40-year-old allegation. in response to the allegation and the subsequent media hype, the paterno family is demanding a full public review of the facts. penn state released this statement, we are aware of the allegations but the legal case and confidentiality commitments that govern our settlement agreements preclude us from discussing these matters at all. we are sensitive to the need to adhere to our commitments and to honor the privacy concerns of potential victims. sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison in october of 2012. he filed a petition this week for a new trial. paterno died in january of 2012 and was never charged with any crimes. now, to some terrifying moments during the kentucky derby parade. look at this, gun fire erupting in the middle of the parade in louisville, sending frightened spectators running for cover. two 15-year-old boys were take

into custody shortly after. police are not sure of a motive, but also say there's no reason to believe this was a random act of violence. the shooting injured a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. according to louisville police those injuries are not life threatening. members of the republican party, they are waking up to an intraparty civil war. the gop is butting heads over donald trump's presidential nomination. it was a shocker late yesterday when house speaker paul ryan joined other prominent republicans against trump saying flatly that he is not ready to support or endorse trump just yet. since then, illinois governor bruce rauner said he won't be supporting the nomination. but sheldon adelson and rick perry say they are all in on trump. nbc's katy tur has more. >> reporter: donald trump may be headed to cleveland to accept the nomination, but the leader of the party paul ryan said he

cannot support or endorse yet. >> i'm not there right now. i hope to though, i want to. but i think what is required is that we unify this party. >> reporter: speaker of the house saying trump needs to live up to the gop legacy. >> we hope that our nominee will be reaganesque. >> it calls into question the future of the party. whether they can become a viable national party. >> reporter: mitt romney announced he won't go the gop convention. joining both president george h.w. bush and george w. bush who say they won't endorse. john mccain tepidly said he's support the nominee, but worried that fund-raisers about his re-election bid in arizona. >> if donald trump is at the top of the top of the ticket, no date this is the race of my life. >> reporter: trump is still drawing record crowds. thousands waiting in the rain in west virginia a state filled with white working class voters.

to win in november, trump will need to capitalize on that demographic. making rust belt state obama won in 2012, like ohio, pennsylvania, wisconsin and michigan turn red again. while mitigating a potential loss in arizona, a republican strong hold and home to the large latino population turned off by his anti-immigration rhetoric. trump tweeted i love hispanics with photos of himself eating a taco bowl on cinco de mayo. hillary fired back targeting trump's deportation plan. >> trump responded to ryan with this statement. i am not ready to support speaker ryan's agenda. perhap wes can come to an agreement about what's best for the american people. they have been treated so badly for so long it's time for politicians to put them first. hillary clinton fired back

against cinco de mayo's tweet even harder last week, speaking in california. she focused almost entirely on immigration reform. >> now every election is a choice and just yesterday donald trump downed down on his plan -- trump doubled down on his plan to have a deportation force to round up people. that's actually what he said. he has pledged in his first days in office to scrap the plans and to finalize plan for the giant wall on the border. well, the best way to prevent that from happening is to make sure he never gets near the white house. >> and while clinton went on the attack against her likely general election rival, her democratic party primary opponent bernie sanders continued to campaign in west virginia. sanders held his final rally there last night. west virginia will allot 37 democratic delegates in the tuesday primary.

guam will hold its democratic contest tomorrow, awarding 12 delegates there. and today at 4:00 p.m. eastern the msnbc road warriors are back to share their insight and stories from the campaign trail. so don't miss that. now, to houston, hazmat teams are trying to clean up a hazardous mess after a massive fire erupted a a chemical warehouse. explosions and toxic flames forced hundreds to evacuate or shelter in place. >> reporter: exploentions rocking houston. starting in a home, it engulfed the neighboring industrial building. inside ammunition and drums of chemicals that blew unlike fire works. >> explosions, that was big. it shook the ground. >> reporter: spilling hazardous material into the air, the authorities sent out a shelter in place order. people were urged to stay inside. more than 600 students evacuated

from the nearby elementary school. the fire went to four alarms with almost 200 firefighters on the front lines. fighting the flames amid high winds and flying debris. >> that thing flew over. that's when the big ball of fire erupted and we just felt the heat. >> reporter: the still smoldering aftermath looking like a battle zone. firefighters say it's a miracle no one was hurt. >> that was nbc's janet shamlian. officials are trying to determine what chemical explode and residents are being told to avoid runoff from the fire. spacex successfully launched a falcon 9 rocket overnight from cape canaveral in florida. it was part of a mission to send the japanese communications satellite into orbit. the first stage of the rocket also successfully landed in the atlantic ocean on board a uniquely named ship called of course i still love you. yeah, that's the name of the ship. successfully landing on that area was a major priority of the

mission because it was if second successful -- the second successful landing for spacex. they weren't optimistic due to the higher rate of speed that it would be falling. arsenio hall has filed a lawsuit against sinead o'connor, after she accused him of supplying drugs to prince. she made the allegations in a recent facebook post who said that he got his drugs from hall. according to the associated press, hall's lawsuit calls the accusations fabricated lies. and states that o'connor bearly knew the superstar. you may recall her biggest hit was a cover of "nothing compares to you" which was written by prince. and poor puppy. animal control services and a vet had to be called to the scene of a pup stuck in a bathtub drain. what happened? mr. ruffles got his paw stuck after getting a shampoo. as you can see, rescuers had to

this is with us in the morning hours and clearing out this afternoon. here we are 8:00 a.m. steadier rain right on i-95. airport delays are expected along with the slow drive. by the time we get to the noon hour, we start to rotate the rain inland actually as the storm continues to drift and actually head towards d.c. this afternoon. the rain should taper off for the evening drive home. friday evening will not be a washout, although things are pretty damp. steadier rains are back in pennsylvania and saturday should be a better day all around. 87 in minneapolis, can be the warmest spot in the entire nation. we cool off the northern plains, still warm and gorgeous in southern half of the country. saturday, clouds linger in the northeast. i think sunday a brief period of showers and then sunday afternoon, the sun should return from d.c. all the way to boston. yes, so your mother's day picnic in the east may be all right. >> a little gift from you? >> what was the last week, punishment?

>> that's true. over 1,000 firefighters are still battling a monster wildfire in alberta, canada. it continues to consume an area larger than that of new york city. three more communities were forced to evacuate yet adding to the 88,000 residents who had to abandon their homes. remarkably there are no reports of casualties. canada's government has also pledged its support by matching all donations to the red cross. meanwhile, in d.c., two fires erupted in the nation's second busiest subway system. surveillance video caught the first fire sparking on the rails after a departing train. that closed two metro stations and three service lines. this comes just six weeks after the metro had an unprecedented one-day shutdown for emergency inspections. miss in ohio are asking for help identifying the man in the gray shirt. he assaulted the clerk to steal cash. he was able to make his escape, but not before getting a major beating from the store's manager who used a fire extinguisher to

>> is it really a problem though? at this point, we haven't seen any fallout too much so far, right? does trump need gop unity to win? >> here's the thing though. in the general election, trump has hinted he wants to raise large sums of money from big republican donors and paul ryan has control over those donors. he can shepherd those donors to a republican candidate. and the fact that donald trump and paul ryan don't see eye to eye right now is probably a problem for him. >> all right. well, how big is the fear that the trump effect will cost house republicans? some of them have tough elections in the fall. >> right. that's a big issue that republicans are worried about and the campaign committees in charge of that have been thinking about whether to create some kind of firewall. be it a separate fund for down ticket candidates or something else to give those lower ticket candidates a chance to keep a little distance from donald trump in a general election. >> well, even people like john mccain saying, look, this could
