much more on a busy tuesday. "first look" starts right now. and good morning, i'm dara brown. breaking news in germany. there was a knife attack on several people in a suburban train station in munich. one person was killed and at least three others are injured. witnesses described the suspect shouting allahu akbar which means god is great in arabic. police are investigating a political motivation for the attack. two people are dead after the violent tornadoes in the plains. south central oklahoma was especially hit hard. this video capture a massive tornado tearing through the town of wynnewood in garvin county, oklahoma. it churned up debris and barged through homes. power lines were knocked over and levelled throwing blue electric sparks in the air. the national weather service described it as large and dangerous and it was responsible for one of the reported deaths.

this is all part of a single giant storm system that brought massive hail and tornadoes from nebraska to colorado and flooding in parts of texas and now the system is heading east. msnbc meteorologist steve sosna is here for what's ahead. >> right. we're tracking it in a different location. the nasty storms have moved into arkansas and western mississippi where we have one severe thunderstorm warning. actually, looks like it was just dropped here. so the severe storms are starting to weaken a bit. i do expect we'll have a little bit of lull in the activity, but it will ramp back up again here this afternoon. where we will be focusing in on the ohio river valley and also again in texas. so there could be damaging winds, large hail and a few isolated tornados. we'll track that throughout the day and an updayton the rest of the country in a bit. it's tuesday, which means there's another presidential contest for the republican and the democratic nominations.

while hillary clinton and bernie sanders duke it out for west virginia's 37 delegates donald trump is strolling to a guaranteed win today. he is set to meet influential republicans on thursday. he'll sit down with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and paul ryan and reince priebus and others. speaker ryan offers an olive branch to trump saying he'd step down as the convention chair if trump asked him. ryan said this about his relationship with trump. >> i want to get to know him and understand him better because i don't know him. we had one conversation a few months ago. and basically, the kind of conversation i'm hoping we all can have together, not just the two of us, but all of us. it's how we can actually unify our party. >> that is a new military survey puts active duty members on

identity. >> able court -- we believe a court should tell our state and our nation and our employers across the country what the law require. >> reporter: his lawsuit says that the federal government's effort to stop enforcement of the law is a blatant overreach. civil rights law he says does not outlaw discrimination based on the transgender status. governor mccrory said he was acting in part on the federal government cutting off $4.3 billion in federal funds for the public schools and the universities. the attorney general announced a federal lawsuit against north carolina, her home state. it wasn't so long ago she said that restroom signs kept some people out for no good reason. >> let us write a different story this time. let us not act out of fear and misunderstanding. but out of the values of inclusion and diversity and regard for all that make our country great. >> reporter: and she had this message for transgendered people. >> we see you. we stand with you, and we will do everything we can to protect you going forward.

the interstate was closed in both directions and multiple homes were destroyed. you can see how violent it is. unfortunately we still have a threat of a few tornados for today. hopefully not as widespread as yesterday, but looking back at yesterday, we had over 200 reports of severe weather across the country including 23 tornadoes. 124 reports of large hail. some of that the size of softballs. almost hard to conceive. and that did a lot of damage. here for today, a lot of the severe weather is moving off to the east now. it's weakening for now, but we will be keeping an eye on the ohio valley here this afternoon. looks like more severe weather possible later today. >> let's hope for a safer day. thanks. it's been a week since a massive wildfire tour through ft. mcmurray. canadian officials got a first look at what was left of the hometown. a city left in ash, 2400 structures were lost and officials remain hopeful. >> there are many, many images of areas that are untouched.

"scrambled politics." chris christie will be the head of the transition team if he wins in november. christie was one of the first to endorse trump after his own failed presidential bid. and former presidential candidate marco rubio took to facebook to unequivocally oppose a possible vp nomination. saying, quote, i have never sought, will not seek and do not want to be considered for vice president. instead, i will focus my attention on representing the people of florida. speaking of even stake, iowa senator joni ernst is borrowing a line from marco rubio, saying she's focus on iowa without ruling out a nomination. and ted cruz is still feeling pain. cruz's now defunct presidential campaign is being sued because of the back ground music used in two ads. ironically, the songs at the center of the suit, victories

contests and sometimes is poised to lose them against sanders. it is really a bother for her when she wants to get ready for the general election. >> and apparently, there's no sign that bernie sanders is going to go away. so this could be there for a while. >> exactly. if anything it's starting to look like he's going to be a nuisance at the convention and that's an issue for her too. sanders has vowed he'll take it all the way to the end. and he might even wage some kind of floor fight at the convention. >> well, let's turn to the gop now where paul ryan say he'll step down from leading the gop convention this year. will this leave the gop in a total disarray? >> maybe. the issue here is that paul ryan is a favorite of establishment republicans. and the fact that he said he's not willing at this time to endorse donald trump is something that donald trump needs to pay attention to. trump wants to unify the party and he wants to do that now. and the fact that one of the top leaders of the establishment wing of the gop won't back him yet is a real issue for him. >> how is this setting the stage for trump and ryan's face to face set for thursday? >> it's only adding to the

intrigue about it and it's obviously something that they're going to discuss. it's the number one topic going on between them right now. >> now, this political scene has been anything but conventional so far this year. any idea on what far-fetched scenarios may be coming realities? >> we might see some kind of contested floor flight on the gop side. there are a number of names running around for donald trump to pick as a vice presidential nominee. so it might be someone maybe not in politic currently. >> daniel strauss, thank you. i love your input. well, just ahead, stephen colbert weighs in on donald trump's post presumptive nominee. and a big red flag for the wildlife officers. can you spot it? details next.

looking to turn a corner after last year's civil unrest, ferguson, missouri has a new police force. delrish moss said he felt the call that he could help turn around the ferguson p.d. which came under intense scrutiny after the shooting of brown. and wildlife officers made a shocking discovery in south florida. officials say alligator parts were scattered around a truck cab including a foot in the dashboard. officers say the driver confessed to killing it a few days ago. he was cited for a violation no and the ponies were out for a special race to commemorate queen elizabeth's 90th birthday. it involved shetland ponies.

hey, there. good morning, it's tuesday, may 10th, i'm alex witt. we begin with that dangerous weather being blamed for at least two deaths in oklahoma. one person in johnston county, the other victim an elderly man killed inside his home when a fast moving tornado swept through south central oklahoma. that's the area you're looking at right now. pretty devastating near the town of wynnewood. six people were trapped beneath debris. no word on their conditions at this hour. but forecasters said that storm could inflict catastrophic damage. here is a look at garvin county and there's no word on injuries at this time. we'll go live
