good morning. it's wednesday, may 11th. i'm jonathan capehart. to the latest on the severe weather, at least ten people were injured when a large tornado tore through western kentucky yesterday. officials say it destroyed homes and businesses in mayfield and dumped hail across the state. it came just a day after tornadoes tore through parts of oklahoma and this morning, we're seeing just how much power one twister packed when it hit the south central town of katie. take a look. >> a farm right up here. don't, please, don't hit that farm. holy -- man. that's a violent tornado. oh, my gosh. that's the most violent motion -- oh, my. get across the road right here. oh, no! it's hitting that farm. no.

oh, no. oh, no. come on. be okay. man, oh, no. oh, my god. look at that. >> oklahoma governor mary fallin has declared a state of emergency in 16 counties to expedite resources to the hardest hit areas. as a fait accompli, donald trump won last night, and still 20% of the voters in nebraska cast ballots for ted cruz and less than a week after suspending his presidential bid, ted cruz returned to capitol hill ruled out a third party bid. he spoke in a packed hallway for

ten minutes and then walked in to his senate office to cheers of the staff welcoming him back. surprisingly he kept the door open to getting back in the race. >> listen, we have suspended the campaign, we have suspended the campaign because i can see no viable path to victory. of course if that changed, we would reconsider things, but let's be clear. we're not going to win nebraska today. there should be no mystery or excitement in that. we have withdrawn thfrom the campaign. it's in the hands of the voter, if circumstances change we'll assess. but i appreciate the eagerness of the excitement of the media to see me back in the ring, but you may have to while a little bit longer. >> former candidate marco rubio is also speaking out about the state of the 2016 race. earlier the florida senator ruled out being considered for the vice presidential nomination. and yesterday, donald trump tweeted, quote, it is only the people that were never asked to

be vp that tell the press that they will not take the position. in a forum at a washington think tank and in a later interview, rubio said trump had his vote, but was restrained in his support. >> my policy differences and reservations about donald's campaign are well established. i've said them often and those remain. and i hope they will be addressed but those remain. that said, i don't view myself as the guy who is going to take shots at him. people know where i stand, they know how i feel, they know what our differences are. he's the nominee of the republican party or the presumptive nominee via the voters and i respect that and i accept it. but that's not going to change the reservations i have about his campaign or about some of the policies that he's established. but i'm not insisting he change anything. he means to be true to whoever he is and that's the things he believes in and then he may have a chance to make that argument to the american people. >> i signed a pledge that said i

christie tend to have the highest unfavorabilities. bloomberg reports that the ohio governor kasich is at the top of the list and despite pressure he is cool to the idea. most people in the poll haven't heard of some of the lesser known candidates like governor mary fallin of oklahoma, whose name has been floated. but trump tweeted suggesting her as a running mate was great advice. support for trump from white nationalists was thrust back into the spotlight when it was reported yesterday that the campaign included one on his slate of delegates in california. william johnson identifies himself as a white nationalist and pro trump robocalls he made to republican voters throughout the primary season. he said, quote, don't vote for a cuban. vote for donald trump. donald trump disavowed the calls in january and the trump campaign initially blamed a quote database error for his inclusion on the list saying that his name was submitted

despite being reject and removed from the campaign's list in february. johnson told nbc that he had withdrawn from being a trump delegate and the campaign said it had quote immediately submitted a new list. but the california secretary of state's office told nbc news that trump's campaign not only contacted them yesterday and missed monday's cutoff date. quote, we informed the campaign that we would not be accepting their revision because it was past the statutory deadline. william johnson will remain on the trump campaign certified list of delegates. on the democratic side, bernie sanders won the west virginia democratic primary last night. he was projected to win the state and likely benefited from comments clinton made about the coal industry earlier this year. sanders' strongest support was not from democrats but independents according to exit polling. they made up a third of the electorate and of sanders' voters there, 33% said they'd

choose trump over the senator from vermont in the general election. sanders picked up 16 delegates to clinton's 11 in west virginia. but according to nbc news, clinton picked up six super delegates to sanders' one super delegate, meaning they tied, 17 to 17 in the state. after his win in west virginia, sanders went on to speak at a rally in salem, oregon, in front of a crowd of about 4,000 people. he celebrated his victory and didn't let up on hillary clinton. >> we have won primaries and caucuses in 19 states. and let me be as clear as i can be. we are in this campaign to win the democratic nomination. one of the waltons made a campaign contribution to secretary clinton of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

[ crowd boos ] i say to that family, maybe instead of making large campaign contributions to secretary clinton, pay your workers a living wage. >> hillary clinton drew her own big crowds in louisville, kentucky. her campaign made a six figure ad buy in the state according to data obtained from nbc news. in spite of the shift of the focus to trump. >> if i'm fortunate enough to be the nominee i'm looking forward to debating donald trump come the fall. >> she's projecting that, why is she spending money in tv ads in kentucky? it sounds to me like she understands that we are in this race, that we have been included west virginia and nine more primary and caucus contests.

then there were these comments from vice president joe biden who for months has said enough to leave people guessing about where he stands on the race. >> you bring up the next president, we're all anxious to see -- >> who she is. [ laughter ] i feel confident that hillary will be the nominee and i feel confident she'll be the next president. clinton is fighting personal attacks from trump and more to come from manafort. >> he said she did nasty things to the women against bill clinton. >> he definitely knows what he's talking about. i believe in him. >> you so -- >> so he's told you stuff, he knows about the clintons and their back unreported behavior that he will now bring out? >> we have talked about the hypocrisy of hillary clinton playing the female card, and his willingness to expose that card

for what it is. >> what is this thing about hillary clinton being married to somebody's an abuser of women, how do you make that case? >> stay tuned. >> you have a case? >> stay tuned. >> have you heard his case? >> we have things to talk about in this campaign where we will not be getting away with that playing the female card. >> this morning police in massachusetts are investigating a deadly stabbing spree that left three people dead including the suspect. the incident began when the suspect identified as 28-year-old arthur derosa crashed a vehicle into a home. once inside he reportedly stabbed two women. one of the victims an 80-year-old died. a short time later police say the suspect crashed into the macy's store at the nearby shopping mall and assaulted several people inside. one of them died. >> we saw like the car just dove right in. and after that is when my mom is like hurry up and we dived the other way. it honestly happened the fastest thing. hop out and just like go. >> according to authorities an

off duty sheriff's deputy shot the assailant. he was taken to the hospital and he was pronounced dead. the suspect's motive is under investigation but police don't believe it was related to terrorism. the nation's second largest subway system is at risk of being shut down if safety concerns aren't fixed soon. days after an explosion damaged the track in the d.c. metro, anthony fox is threatening to suspend the system if immediate changes aren't made. fox told reports yesterday, he quote would have no hesitation to shut down the system if safety doesn't improve in that quote -- and that quote there's an awful lot of work to do to correct the problem. let's turn to business where the dow had its best day since march yesterday. but asian markets continue to be on shaky ground. cnbc's nancy hulgrave joins us from london. what's behind that volatility? >> as you mentioned it was a great day for u.s. stocks on

of kentucky yesterday. it was the focal point for the bigger storms that's not too bad. like -- almost like quarter sized hail. san antonio already two inches of rain. huge thunderstorms over the town. now new ones are redeveloping to the west of town. so we'll watch that. we'll have a severe thunderstorm watch that includes kansas city to omaha. large thunderstorms along interstate 70 from topeka to kansas city and that's drifting up to st. joseph. the other areas of concern, late today, this area of the slight risk all the way back to iowa and missouri. but this enhanced risk of severe storms this is where we'll see some large hail, baseball sized hail. we'll watch the storms right around 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. from tulsa up to mcallister. still some rainy weather from the d.c. area to virginia. i saw yesterday, yesterday was 14 days in a row in washington, d.c., jonathan, with a trace of rain. that's a streak we'd like to

that. >> now the senate gop has launched an inquiry into facebook over claims of bias. it comes after the gizmodo article in which a former worker claimed that the social network suppressed conservative news articles from the trending topics. john thune has write up a letter to mark zuckerberg demanding that the company explain how trending articles are chosen. >> if these allegations that have been made by these former facebook employees are accurate, it completely contradicts everything that facebook says that they're about when it comes to their trending topics. they have 167 million users who rely on facebook. i assume for news and information. and if the news that's coming through there which is represented to be objective and based upon some algorithm and it's not, then the people have a right to know that. harry reid hit back, writing
