is trump now looking for a way out? it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning. it's thursday, may 12th. i'm jonathan capehart. the next few hours will be pivotal for the future of the republican party as leaders in congress come together with the presumptive nominee donald trump to see if they can hammer out their differences and forge a path ahead. we will be giving you live looks at the action in washington, d.c., all morning. but the official agenda gets under way at 9:00 a.m. that's when trump, rnc chairman reince priebus and house speaker paul ryan will meet at republican national committee headquarters near the capitol. at 9:30, trump and speaker ryan
2:31 am
will hold another meeting at the rnc. ryan declined to specify yesterday the exact policy differences he wishes to address. while welcoming the opportunity to spend some time with trump. >> if i don't really know him, i met him once in person in 2012. we had a very good conversation in march on the phone. we just need to get to know each other. and we as a leadership team are enjoying the fact that we have a chance to meet with him. i'd rather have a conversation in person than through the media, no offense. >> after that, trump will meet with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and his team over at the offices of their campaign committee. sources tell nbc that trump requested the meeting and the agenda is his. mcconnell's team is ready to work with trump. they don't want to show disdain to the voters who voted for him. last night, trump was

deferenti deferential. >> we have the speaker of the house paul ryan, who's the leader? >> i would say paul ryan. i would think that. i'm doing very well. i think i set the all-time record for votes gotten by a republican candidate. but i would say paul for the time being and maybe for a long time. >> but this morning's meeting is about more than trump making paul ryan feel powerful. some are saying that the 46-year-old house speaker's future is riding on whether he will keep his agenda separate or embrace the presumptive nominee. the decision extends to whether he will one day be a viable candidate for the presidency, as the front page of this "new york times" speculates. newt gingrich formally endorsed trump yesterday and some of the most influential members of the ryan's caucus put out a statement about the importance of uniting behind trump. there are indications of a policy shift in ryan's direction. with the trump adviser saying that the candidate is open to

reductions in entitlement spending, something the candidate has said he won't touch. yesterday, ryan said not to expect an immediate resolution while emphasizing the stakes. >> at the meeting tomorrow, can there be -- do you see the possibility of two separate messages? the gop and the nominee's message? >> look, we have a process we're getting started. the last thing i'll say is what the end process will be when we're just beginning. and meanwhile, trump appears to be softening his rhetoric on the proposed muslim ban. it came as he responded to the comments from new muslim mayor from london, sadiq khan. >> my message to donald trump and your team, your views of islam are ignorant. it is possible to be a muslim and to live in the west. and it's possible to be a muslim and to love america.
2:34 am
>> if you look at his radical islamic terrorism all over the world it's a disaster going on. i assume he's denying that. i assume he's like our president that's denying it's taking place. we have a serious problem. it's a temporary ban. it hasn't been called for yet, nobody has done it. this is just a suggestion until we find out what's going on. >> have you decided whether you'll back off on the ban -- i understand it was a temporary ban. but with an unlimited temporary period which could go on forever. >> i would like to back off as soon as possible. we have exceptions and given it -- and again it's temporary. >> trump said he's considering putting former new york city mayor rudy giuliani in charge of the immigration commission to study the issue. trump faced pressure to release his income tax returns. if he doesn't, he would be first major party nominee since '76 not to. trump told the associated press he doesn't expect to release them before november, but would release them after the irs

debt. you learn very little from the tax returns. >> what about his taxes? because when you run for president, especially the nominee, that's expected. my husband and i have released 33 years of tax returns. we've got eight years on our website right now. so you've got to ask yourself, why doesn't he want to release them? yeah, well, we're going to find out. >> the last republican presidential nominee mitt romney also tweeted, mr. trump, tear down that tax wall and writing in a lengthy facebook post said in part, it is disqualifying for a modern day presidential nominee to refuse to release returns to the voters. he went on, in -- there's only one logical explanation -- there is a bombshell in them. given mr. trump's equanimity with other flaws in his history we can only assume it's a bombshell of unusual size.
