very good day you to. at this hour on a sunday, the battle in the rust belt is where we take. bernie sanders and hillary clin going led to head holding dueling events with voters in kentucky. the big fight between them, who is more capable of beating donald trump in november? we take you there live shortly.

deflecting for the donald, rnc chairman comes to trump's defense this morning amid mounting controversies swirling around the campaign. this as we're learning more about trump's meeting thursday on the hill with republican leaders. and what it could take for the presumptive nominee to win over the speaker of the house. >> trump was not asked about it leadership to change. and there's no reason for him to change. he's just one the primary process with a record number of votes. now that's not to say that paul ryan didn't talk more policy p they got along very well. the conversation that's they had focused on the trump agenda for america -- to make america great again and paul ryan's agenda. >> we'll get to that in just a second. first, breaking news into msnbc this hour. out of england. a major soccer match was canceled because of a suspicious package scare. tens of thousands of fans were forced to evacuate the stadium in manchester.

less than half an hour before the key game's scheduled kickoff. this was supposed to be a big game. >> yeah, there were implications for another tournament, european tournament. and it was all called off. manchester police say what they found was an incredibly life like device. their words. incredibly life like. they say it was not a viable explosive device. but all of this caused quite a disruption. in fact, police were still sweeping the stadium at this hour more than four hours after all of this started. it happened just before kickoff. an employee at the stadium found this incredibly life like device in the northwest quadrant of the stadium. the stadium home to manchester united. a capacity of 75,000 people. it was evacuated. very orderly evacuation. very calm evacuation.

sniffer dogs and a bomb squad brought in. game canceled. and then what transpired was they swept the stadium. they conducted this controlled explosion and then investigated the die vice which they then found to be not viable. the league put out a statement. they defended the decision to call the game and to evacuate the stadium. they say that they took this decision after police advised the necessity to deal with the suspicious package. so on police advice. and they also said that when it comes to matters of security, it's obviously right to place the safety of supporters and employees foremost. so the investigation continues. who put it there? why did they put it there? but in essence, richard, a false alarm at man united stadium. >> all right. this as you get into the evening, early evening. there kelly, thank you with the breaking news. >> now we take you to politics in kentucky.

democrats are locked in a battle there ahead of tuesday's primary. hillary clinton speaking in louisville and beneficially sand berz to take the stage in paducah. casey hunt joins us live from louisville. casey, you know, you probably have the most information at the moment. very little polling really out of kentucky that we're able to put our fingers on. what do you know there in terms who have looks to be ahead of the other? >> richard, history would tell us that kentucky is clinton country. this is a place that she did well in 2008. it's a place where her family has deep ties, clinton to a prominent democrat whose here ran against mitch mcconnell in the senate. hillary clinton came back here to help her campaign. but the fact that she's here campaigning so hard tells you a couple things. first, they are concerned about it. there are some reason to be concerned about it. those comments she made on cole in ohio earlier this year, you

saw her try to readdress whether she went to west virginia a couple weeks ago talking about how she was going to put coal miners, and put coal miners out of work. she is saying, of course, she misspoke. that is not what she meant about it comments. that say problem here in kentucky as well. coal is a very important part of the economy. bernie sanders has also drawn crowds of thousands here, 7,000 or so in louisville just earlier in the week. so, you know, that shows you that there is some enthusiasm for him. now, of course, the flip side of this is that hillary clinton has done very, very well with african-american voters. that community has really come behind her. and that's something she's really focused on just earlier in this rally today. she is talking about attending a church service at an african-american church that was hosting a white clutch and how that felt to be in that crowd. she was talking about mothers of black sons who have been killed by gun violence. that's something that really speaks to that community.

so she does have deep roots here. the fact she is campaigning here as aggressively as she is shows you her campaign beliefs that if there is a gap between she and bernie sanders, she more than capable of closing it. they feel like they are on solid ground. >> solid ground as we look toward moving to that june primaries as we close out the season. you're also following this, some fireworks coming out of nevada and the state convention there. of course, that's been a key swing state throughout recent elections. hillary clinton picking up some delegates. sanders also. but they got a little bit heated, the two camps did. what happened? >> it did get a little heated, richard ashgs cording to a report in the hill and some bernie sanders supporters very frustrated with this, hillary clinton, of course, did win the nevada caucuses. the convention plays a role in selecting delegates. and there was a little bit of back and forth over a lot of technicalities related to the rules for the convention. bernie sanders supporters feeling as though clinton

supporters rigged the outcome of that convention and getting very heated to the point where some of bernie sanders' top surrogates, nina turner from ohio eventually saying she had to calm people down. i think it's a little bit of a preview of what we could see at the democratic national convention. i think clinton's campaign is hoping that it doesn't go that way. but there's clearly a number of angry bernie sanders supporters who feel the system is rigged against them. richard? >> casey hunt in louisville at a live rally there with secretary clinton. thank you so much. let's now shift gears to the republicans. it's been a tough week for the gop nominee. donald trump with questions arising from his tax returns. to this weekend's "new york times" article on his treatment of p former female employees. this morning rnc chairman tried to deflect some criticism from the article. >> donald trump represents such a massive change to how things are done in washington that people don't look at donald trump as to whether or not he releases his taxes or what the

story waves 30 years ago. people look at donald trump and say, is this person going to cause earthquake in washington, d.c.? >> hallie, good day to you. how is trump react together "new york times"? he tweeted this morning. >> he's been up and at them in twitter. he is calling it a lame hit piece, essentially, saying everyone is laughing at the "new york times" for the article on him and women. he says he gave them many names of women he helped which "the new york times" refused to use. they interviewed 50 men and women who have known him for decades and highlighting interactions with him where he is vulnerable given past comments. all that said, you heard from

the rnc clarm krchlc chairman. things that happened in the past may not resonate with voters right now who are looking for change and looking for somebody who can shake up washington. prybus doesn't have in options except to come behind the presumptive nominee. that's what you're seeing him do. he also is addressing this morning the claims, the reports that there is some rumblings of a possible third party bid by some folks, names being floated that potentially mitt romney may be recruiting people like ben sass of nebraska. you're hearing names like mark cuban who said thanks but no thanks. a lot of intrigue as to what that may look like. pribus trying to stamp that down. >> i want to bring in michael steele. also, "new york times" national

reporter yamish. 1 sindor. the article spans some four decades. dozens of women were interviewed for this report. trump blasting as was said by hallie, the report today saying the times didn't call the women. that he has adjusted to them when they reached out to him wlachlt is your reaction to trump claiming this is a hit piece? >> there is donald trump camming after "the new york times" again. he's gone after my colleagues in the past. they've taken a critical look at him. you can say the same thing when he came after meg yin kelly. i doesn't like when reporters look in his past and start bringing up issues that make him eventual nurab vulnerable. while he is talking about women's bodies, while his father was trying to order the kind of food that they're -- the women should be eating, he also was helping women kind of go up into the organization and help women

kind of get promoted in that organization. so while he is still at the same time objectifying one hand, on the other hand, he is putting women in places, professional places they wouldn't have been without him. so it is really an interesting look in a complex look. one thing that my colleagues and i have been writing about is trurm has kind of had this ability to take advantage of our a.d.d. society as one strategist put it. he's this person that can go through media cycles one minute and then we're talking about him, his butler, and then the next minute we're talking about the women he dealt w it will be interesting to see how donald trump in the future kind of deals with this piece and deals with his issues with women. >> interesting part about this michael, when we look at what she was just commenting on and how the campaign or supporters of donald trump might react to this report, yesterday we had a republican strategist that said, hey, "the new york times" is the modern day "playboy." so really trying to take down what we consider mainstream media.

will the article the pressure was me change in the trump campaign? it doesn't seem like that will be the outcome. >> i think it will continue to give pause to lawmakers and other republicans that have concerns about rallying behind donald trump as the nominee. there's no question as a private citizen and businessman he should be held to a different standard than those of an lekted official. but the reports are extremely troubling. i think that's one reason you're going to continue to see doubts about donald trump as the republican nominee. >> one of those doubts coming from paul ryan, speaker of the house. dent not come out. and he support the presumptive nominee. let's take a listen to that. >> let's not pretend that one or two weeks after one of the most divisive primaries we've had in the modern era that everyone is on the same page. to pretend to do that and fake it means we go into the fall like i said at half strength. >> so, hallie, consumate bligs

here, not saying a lot in saying a little at the same time. not committing again to the presumptive nominee. >> sending signals, right? and depending how you're receiving the signals depends on how you're hearing paul ryan. on the one hand, he is indicating that he is taking these positive steps forward when it comes to his relationship with donald trump. we know that this week the two teams will be meeting to dive a little bit more deeply into policy. something that by our reporting was not really something they got into last week on capitol hill. it wasn't about the nitty-gritty of different sorts of policy topics. it was a broader look at principles. that's going to change this week. the other part is paul ryan trying to give space to people who as michael is talking about may not be comfortable getting onboard that trump train just yet. people running these races down the ballot, these republicans up for re-election that are vulnerable positions that are looking for ways to draw some distance between themselves and some of donald trump's more controversial proposals like, for example, his temporary muslim ban he proposed f you're

the ntsb is send ag team to south texas to determine what caused a deadly charter bus crash north of laredo. eight people were killed and 44 injured when the bus rolled over on a south texas highway. officials saying heavy rain may

>> that transgender people do not have a voice in north carolina. >> yeah. now he also did, the governor from north carolina had no this to say about the recent development that came out from the obama administration on guidance regarding bathrooms and public institutions. let's listen to that. >> rights now the obama administration is bypassing congress by attempting to rewrite the law and set basic restroom policies, locker room policies and even shower policies for public and private employers across the country. >> okay. so there is that where the governor of your state is against what was released on friday. in addition to that, as you know, your governor is against the two lawsuits against the state on bathrooms. and just a matter of point, you know, north carolina itself gets about $4 billion according to "the washington post" each year for education. the question that's been out there floating around that

you're very aware of is should that money be withheld? f. the state does not comply with to what the two lawsuits want the state to do? >> absolutely the money should be withheld. if we're not willing to comply with federal guidelines, then we should not reap the benefits of the federal government. but i do think it's really interesting and want to point out that governor has said that obama administration is attempting to rewrite a law. that's really interesting to me. they issued a guidance which is a reminder of what schools should adhere to when receiving federal funds. that is from 1972 when that amendment was passed. so they're not rewriting any laws. they're simply reminding north carolina's legislature and our governor that in receiving federal funds for our public schools, you must comply with certain regulations. it's just a reminder. it's guidance. he's not rewriting any law and

it's certainly not oversight. >> of a process that many who are supporters of this have said it's been the works for a long, long time in law as well as in the administration. i want to build on something you just said. lynch announced the government's lawsuit against north carolina. we'll listen to that. >> no matter how isolated, no matter how afraid and no matter how alone you may feel today, know this -- the department of justice and indeed the entire obama administration want you to know that we see you. we stand with you and we will do everything we can to protect you going forward. >> whether you heard the administration and heard the attorney general with her message just now, do you feel scene as -- does the community feel seen by the developments over the last several days? >> absolutely. i think the obama administration is wonderful and very, very happy that the obama

administration and our attorney general have stood up and said that they see the transgender community and that they support us and they're behind us. and that they care about our actual safety and our well-being. i think it's wonderful. >> the study you may have seen from jodie herman surveyed 93 transgender people in 2008-09. she found if her study that the transgender people that she had surveyed were the ones at ris inco -- risk in bathrooms. which ones are more at risk? >> the transgender people are more at risk, absolutely, because people fear the unknown. when you're going into a restroom and certainly if i had have to go into the men's restroom, i'm going to be putting myself at danger, not just because people may be intimidate order afraid or ignorant to transgender, but because anatomically, i'm a

they love -- they elected her husband twice. what is going to be happening in kentucky in your sense who have has the better chance right now? >> he keeps hanging on, right? >> yeah. >> he's going to stick around a while. he wants to make his message as clear as he k he has the stage. why give it up? she's probably going to be the nominee. this is really just distracting her from what she wants to be doing which is talking about how much better she is for women than donald trump is. the push on parade, we heard that in michigan. bowling green, kentucky, right? that's a key city if you love cars where i believe the corvette has been built for many moons. i could be getting that wrong. it is also a big manufacturing hub. is this going to be where he wants to go given that donald trump is also been use something of those ee same points. >> well, he's been using the points before donald trump

started using them. bernie sanders has really found that trade, talking about trade and coal are going to be the things that make her vulnerable. you talked about this idea that he's going to keep on going. he found that these are message that's work. he's trying to look now at trying to he mass as many delegates as possible while he's still trying to get the nomination, i believe he is in some ways trying to hang on for dear life in terms of that, i think the other thing he's trying to do is trying to show that she's vulnerable. she has to move on these issues. she has to be closer to his positions. she has to take more progressive stance. i think it's going to be interesting to see who wins kentucky. fwhut 2008, hillary clinton won ten kentucky and then lost the nomination. even when we're seeing the big wins for bernie sanlders this month and next month, it may make a difference in terms who have wins the nomination. i think hillary clinton has such a far lead it's going to be hard to make up that. >> there some question about whether, again, the momentum is shifting right now. and one of the interesting

things when you move away from the democratic primary race right now is look at the general. and that's really what hillary clin clinton is trying to do right now. what is interesting is that you look at a recent poll out of georgia. that comes from the atlanta journal constitution. and it's showing that, guess what? the state might go blue. >> right. >> what do you think? is that a possibility? i've been talking about texas historically. now we're looking at georgia. >> it's a brave new political world. i think democrats are really chomping at the bit to get this general election started. not only can they win the white house but they can take over congress. and that was something that was unfathomable just a few months ago zbhchlt right. >> so they're going to try to get started on this as soon as they k they love pushing stories like. that we love pushing stories like nah. >> it's in the margin of error. that's what i eluded to. what do you think? >> i think this shows that democrats are looking at the general election and looking at the states and saying this is a whole new map. the places we thought were red,

the place wez thought were blue, they're going to switch over. i think while they're still fighting this yfd hillary clinton and bernie sanders, they're super happy that donald trump is the nominee and i think that this is why the republicans, you're seeing so much issues with the unification because they're looking at the map, too. i think a lot of people are worried about what is going to happen come the general election. >> the whole poll where she is doing well, the question might be then, right, with the obama administration and we have not necessarily seen who he is going to support, probably going to be hillary clinton if she gets the nomination, how far does she need to distance herself? there's the question of deportations. there is another wave that is am coulding through right now. latino american community was not happy based on the way the administration reached out to their community during the elections. and then the decisions made later. but, of course, then we had what came down which turned around. >> overall, i think you would see that obama's done very, very

good on immigration with the demographic she needs to get. >> but does she need to distance herself? >> i don't think she needs to distance herself. mainly, her opponent is donald trump. even when latinos are thinking okay this is president obama getting, like before the deportations on calling them criminalors racist. >> very little overhang in terms of the obama administration. >> it's going to be more about the choice. >> i think there is no question that obama will get on air force one and going around the country sporgt the democratic nominee. i think that's probably going to be looking at the numbers, hillary clinton. i think there is no issue. there. >> thank you both for joining us. i appreciate your time today. thank you. with just two weeks until memorial day, criticism of donald trump is mounding. john mccain wants trum top apologize to prisoners of war for his past comments that he does not like people who are

captured. now, more than 50 veterans are demanding trump account for the $6 million he says he raised at a charity event in late january. joining me now is paul rikof from veterans of america. paul, thanks for being here. >> this goes way back. we want to see an apology. and also i think we want to see policies that matter. donald trump can be a lot more specific. he can also account for the $of 6 million he claimed to have raised for charities. most importantly for us, we want limb to defend the gi bill. congress is contemplating unprecedent the cuts to the gi bill right now. everyone is looking at the campaign trail back in washington. the senate veterans affairs committee is threatening to cut about $3 billion from the gi bill. the gi bill is sent over a million people to college since 9/11. donald trump is silent on that. we need him to step up. the president has been silent on

has taken a look at the potential fallout, director of labor market policy at the american action forum. so, ben, i was looking through your report. it was very thorough. the report by your group, it showed that cost of deportations would range somewhere between $735 billion and $795 billion. >> to clarify, he we found that would be $400 to $600 billion cost to remove all undocumented immigrants. there are four steps sto removing the immigrants. first you have to find and apprehend all the immigrants. then you have to detain them, process them legally and then transport them home. and that cost by itself would be about $100 billion to $300 billion, depending on how we apprehend them. and then to keep any new undocumented immigrants from entering the country, it would cost about $300 billion over the

next 20 years. so that adds up to $400 to $600 billion. >> would there be costs to the private sector? i'm assuming that your estimations here are all public sector funds. >> yeah. so that is just what the government would have to spend to do this. the economy would definitely suffer from. this in the private sector, there are about $6.8 million undocumented immigrants employed. removing them would result in about $6.8 billion lost in annual gdp. and what is more is that there are not enough native workers to replace those undocumented immigrant workers. there would be a result of $830 billion lost in gdp. >> sounds like there is a lot of subtractions r there any additions to this calculation? >> the additions are --

immigrants but like i said, there aren't enough to fully replace all 6.8 million. and we would still be short four million workers. >> what industries would be hurt the most or hit the most by this should it happen if you remove all the undocumented immigrants in america? >> well, so the industries that you would find the biggest negative effects would be those with the most undocumented immigrants. so agriculture quoechlt see a gdp decline of 16%. construction. we could see 12% decline in gdp and leisure and hospitality, 9% decline in gdp. >> any of the surprising you to as you went through this study? >> well, what was probably the most surprising about what it was how negative the economic effects were. i was a little surprised there were so few native workers available to replace these undocumented immigrant workers.
