over the weekend you may have seen "new york times" story of allegedly inappropriate behavior by trump with women we heard from one of the women featured on the front page and she is now loudly voicing her support and republicans were asked if that would hurt trump's standing in the party and the top republican trump supporter. >> i think all these stories come out. they come out every couple weeks. people just don't care. >> people have not expected purity on his part. what they're concerned about, they'revirtue.

>> let's start this hour with nbc's katy tur, out at trump tower in new york covering the presumptive nominee. so much to unpack this afternoon. let's start with trump laying out his strategy against hillary clinton. you've been covering him from the beginning, you've seen his strategies play out in the prima primaries, little marco, lying ted. what is he telegraphing as that he will do to hillary clinton? >> interesting, he doesn't

telegraph his strategies or attacks and never done it to past opponents, but he is starting to telegraph exactly how he will take on hillary clinton. he told the "new york times" getting nasty is not going to work with hillary clinton. he can't be seen as trying to bully her. instead what he wants to do is make voters question her authenticity, question her character, question whether or not they can trust her and in order to do that, donald trump believes he needs to bring in bill clinton to the me lay lee y saying bill clinton's past is relevant and fair game because of how hillary clinton reacted to them, instead of reacting on the side of the women, he's s saying she reacted on the side of herself and her husband trying to further their political careers more than anything else and he will bring up benghazi to cast doubt whether she is fit to lead and whether she has the judgment and

using benghazi as an example of that, that she wasn't awake for a 3:00 phone call, which has been disputed and she hasn't told the american people the same thing she told her daughter, that was terrorist act. of course, very early on whether this works for hillary clinton we have to wait and see. it is interesting for him to say what he's doing when in the past he's been so cagey and self-described as unpredictable as to how he goes about things. >> katy tur, thanks so much. appreciate it. as we mentioned this weekend, perhaps a sign of things to come. president obama seemingly att k attacking donald trump without ever actually using his name. >> the world is more interconnected than ever before. it's becoming more connected everyday. building walls won't change that. it's not cold and i don't know what you're talking about. that's not keeping it real or telling it like it is. that's not challenging political

corre correctness, that's just not knowing what you're talking about. >> with more on that, nbc's hallie jackson is with us. good afternoon. >> they there. what we heard from president obama, really his strongest case yet against donald trump, someone he didn't mention by name, as you noted but it was unmistakable who president obama was talking about during that commencement address at rutgers. he talked about the make america great slogan, taking aim at the border walk, the proposed temporary muslim ban, what have become cornerstones of donald trump's campaign and president obama is eager to take on donald trump on what seems to be a referendum on trump and not so much president obama or even hillary clinton as we start this pivot or get into this pivot in the general election. when might we see president obama get on the campaign trail

and taking these attacks to trump more directly? sources are telling our colleague, kristen welker that will happen once the democratic nomination is officially wrapped up. once hillary clinton goes from being the likely democratic nominee or presumptive nominee or once bernie sanders gets out of this race. what you saw from the president at rutgers at that press availability a week or 10 days ago was almost a licking of the chops to get out there and take on trump, somebody who the democrats see as potentially or absolutely harmful to the country moving forward, trump's team, ready for this? ready to combat these attacks and ready to flip the script and turn them on clinton herself. kate. hallie jackson, thanks for that. any progress donald trump made on capitol hill last week book ended by scandals dug up from his pre-politics past. as we mentioned on the top, rnc chairman reince priebus says

what to do with him as his opponents had trouble dealing with him throughout the primary. i am in agreement with reince priebus it is difficult to understand what the electorate wants. i got off a plane in cleveland to give a commencement address and a senior executive came over and said, my wife is with trump and i'm with trump and don't you talk down to trump people because we want an earthquake. >> trump has a high 65% d disapproval rating, clinton also very high, 56% disapproval according to our "wall street journal" poll. what does the party want him to do when it comes to his personal affairs. >> let me answer that in two y ways. i want to know who he will put on the supreme court and want to see his tax returns and how he will rebuild the navy. the party faithful want someone

to take it to clinton. every liberal is so sad. e for egypt, s for syria, s for the status of force agreement secretary of clinton blew in iraq that lost the peace and s for her server that will lead to an indictment for somebody if not her. what does get everybody excited is no holds bar take to it the clintons campaign. president obama's very divisive remarks at rutgers yesterday is an attempt to turn the page from his failure, as put out in jeffrey goldberg's atlantic piece in the "new york times" piece on ben rhodes. he loves to talk about trump because every time he talks about his foreign policy it ends up being a disaster. i do think there is a part of the party faithful that says, go donald and turn the table over on media elites and democratic party strategists like you did on the republican party. >> there's also an argument this election is about trump opposed to president obama's legacy.

normally when you have a two term democrat everybody would be trying to tear down obama instead of trying to win back the white house for republicans, instead we're focused on donald trump. >> that depends where you look. barbara boxer presented herself as hillary clinton's representative over the weekend and was tlustily booed by the sanders people and she got angry and told them to go home. right now, they're melting down. media want to focus on donald trump because he is a bigger story and hillary clinton is a god-awful comment. libya, isis colony and russia taken over ukraine and loss of iraq, and syria's disaster and the server which was illegal and will lead to an indictment. there's plenty of time and the "new york times" is trying to get a few digs in. on this network this morning, donny deutche brought up on "morning joe," jeffrey epstein. if you start talking about donald trump as the "new york

times" did and history of being a playboy with women, you will end up with bill clinton flying around on jeffrey epstein's jet. i'm looking for this as being unpredictable. i haven't signed up for donald trump. >> i was wondering if you already had the acronym already. >> i have been using that acronym for hillary a long time, kate. >> let me say what donald trump told the "new york times" about his plans. he plans to throw bill clinton's infidelities in hillary clinton's face on live television during the presidential debates this fall questioning whether she enabled his behavior and sought to discredit the women involved. is trump on the right track here or would you rather he not be going down that lane at all or sticking to policy? >> he's shaping the battlefield. you want to make sure the battlefield is shaped. he has to worry about secretary clinton refusing to debate like.

he seems like a guy who commonly says will not tell you about my strategy because i want it a surprise and he lays out the

strategy. >> you're absolutely right, he says he wants to be that way. innovators disrupt everything and turn the tables on you and me on my radio show and you on your television show all the networks to react as they never reacted before. it got him $2 million worth of free television time and makes him the best in america and before long ivanka trump will start following her father and talking about her father. she is his secret weapon and has been since the beginning of the campaign. he will look to juice up the convention and i'm looking for a vice-presidential pick that surprises as well, i'm hoping for somebody young, combat warriors who can talk about national security inflammatory lots of surprises ahead. >> i was going to say with all those surprises you don't worry he opens a pandora's box and

it was the big trump story over the weekend, unwelcome advance, shrewd reliance on ambition and unsettling work conduct in decades. and telling the story of trump praising her beauty after she was asked to change into a swimsuit at a party and almost as soon as it hit the news, she was back on the news saying her comments were taken out of context. here's how she explained to our

colleague, peter alexander. >> i don't have a negative story to give about donald trump because i don't have a negative account of anything. he was -- we had a great relationship. i really felt like they misled me into that the entire time into that article and it was almost a trap. >> she called it a hit piece. the "new york times" is defe defending its reporting saying miss brewer lane was reported accurately at length and saying that the swimsuit scene was te start of a whirlwind romance between miss brewer lane and trump. i want to bring in jane and republican strategist join us on the set. thanks for being with us. let me start right with you. your starting right next to me. donald trump firing back with the coming forward today to the woman central of the failing "new york times" hit piece on me we have exposed the article as a

fraud. that's the end of his beat. will this be him able to reverse the narrative again? i'm not putting that well but he tends to jump in on things that look like they might hurt him and make them a positive. >> he tends to go beyond the entity he's attacking and use it as a way to talk to voters. he's saying, there goes the press again, they're out to get me and having the backup of this woman coming and saying i have nothing to say about donald trump certainly pushes that point. also look for him to have several women who worked for him in the past start showing up and saying he was a great employer. >> all that said the unfavorability numbers we're all familiar with them for trump among women. does a story like this change 70% of women who have a negative view of donald trump? >> absolutely not. it's a real problem for him going into the general election. you can win republican primaries based off essentially male white

voters for donald trump but you cannot win a general election without female voters. that's not true, you can win a general election without female vote voters, the only person is george w. bush and have to negotiate it down to 10 percentage points. he's nowhere near that. he's like 50, 60 points down. even if you come back at them and say, there's holes in them or they don't show the whole picture they don't do him any good. he needs to start saying how he would be good for women and his policies good for woman how he empowers and supports woman how it mentions how he does as a boss, it equally is damaging in ways he constantly talked about their bodies and their weight and what they looked like even

as employees. this is one drop in a large pull of stories and problems he has with women. >> when you read the whole article, it went on and on, big two pages in the middle of the paper if people haven't seen it. it is a confusing picture that gets painted. there are women and testimonials who say he did a lot for me and helped me at a time women weren't being advanced in the ranks of the real estate business and women, as jay mentions, borderline kind of assault situations. what are we to make of that kind of portrait of donald trump. it's interesting. i read that story and kept waiting for the explosive bombshell. what are they trying to reveal in this? there was nothing, no allegat n allegations made, lawsuit, nothing there except to show all these women's point of view. i agree this is not an ideal story for donald trump to be talking about because his problem with women 73% is a really hard number to come back

from. the way he's able to use it, at least try and turn it on the press and talk about the credibility issue of the repo reporting is a way to 34mitigat it somewhat. this is not what donald trump wants to be talking about or should be talking about. the campaign has to move beyond this. >> if you were his advisor right now because that's what you do as a republican strategist, if you were working with his camp would you say stop with the twets and let got it and move forward? >> you have to know your candidate. he doesn't seem to be one that will do a 180 and do everything differe differently. what you need to do is start driving his schedule and who else is supporting him, like ivanka trump and have surrogates out there doing that. as a strategist one thing i learned you cannot change a candidate overnight. >> the next six months, is this what we're in for. that's morning as we were talking to hugh about we have donald trump saying what he will

try to take hillary clinton down with personal attacks, is this what we're in for, for the next six months? >> i think so. it will be six ugly months. the interesting thing from his playbook, almost taking a playbook from george w. bush, the last republican to successfully win the white house and did so mitigating the loss of women to less than percentage points and did it by basically scaring women in 2004 talking about we are in a time of war and you need a protector and somebody that will take care of you. donald trump to some degree is a hyper version of that, hyper mass skulized version of that, i will protect women from rape from illegal immigrants and protect from terror attacks. that is the strategy saying women of america, i will protect you and keep you safe as hillary clinton is weak and interesting

presidential candidate to carry the state in a general election and he's well-known here, long time friends with the former governor here. his daughter ran for the senate and the clintons helped her try to win that senate seat, both jerry and allison were here today campaigning with hillary clinton and the focus becoming bill clinton and the hillary clinton campaign saying he will not have a formalized role in the cabinet prevented by law, she wouldn't be able to appoint a spouse or person or member of her family to a role that she has formal control over as president. so having to make sure to clarify that. but bill clinton himself talking on the campaign trail about having a role with particularly rural communities where coal is a big part of the economy, that's been part of his political outlook all along, being governor of arkansas, a lot of similar issues in these

two states. to a certain extent, this is specific to kentucky, they think this race is very close. she's spending a lot of time in these final days before the kentucky primary. she's been competing in some of the same places bernie sanders has been. they were both out in paducah, kentucky in the last 24 hours a little far away from here. the clinton campaign managed to land itself on the front page by telling the newspaper they were doing a local off the record stop that landed on the front page with bernie sanders drawing typical large crowds across the state. one thing hillary clinton has not focused on since she's been here even though we have heard some general election themes from her she hit donald trump in what sounded like a general election speech in bowling green

but she did not touch on that story we've been talking about, the head line in the "new york times" that talks about donald trump and women. i caught up with her on the rope line and we should have what she had to say in response to that. >> i wanted to ask you do you think donald trump has treated women well in the course of their lives and business meetings? >> i will talk about what i will do as president and we will trau the contrast. >> reporter: we are going to draw the contrast and tells you they will wage this campaign directly against donald trump. airced tell me some of their approach to this is based on needing to wait and see how some of these stories play out. there's still some uncertainty how the general electorate will react. we learned what republican primaries think of it but still questions to be answered. >> interesting exchange with hillary clinton. thanks so much. let's turn to senior editor, beth few wi heooey in the newsr

us. saying bill clinton will focus on jobs and said he would be focused on rural areas and economic improvement in those areas. what's going on here. >> it's always the case with the clint clintons, they don't quite know how to make this work. hillary clinton wants to remind voters old enough to remember the '90s about the peace and prosperity. what people didn't like about the '90s, peace or prosperity. she wants everybody to remember things were pretty good in terms of the economy and tranquility outside of bill clinton's own issues in the '90s at the same time wants to prove and remind people she's her own person, has her own credentials here, a senator, secretary of state, she's not just an extension of her husband. a very strange need toll thread and unclear whether she's doing it successfully at this point. >> the campaign trying to clarify her comments that bill clinton has a lot of creativity and knowledge to bear when it

comes to the economy. she would certainly want his advice and council. it would be getting ahead of one's self-to talk about a formalized role in an administration. threading the needle. >> hillary clinton did serve an official role in his administration and heading up the health task force. >> that went really really well. >> that went so well they want to do it again. it's very reassuring to voters when you talk to voters in the field that bill clinton's around. he was there for two terms. he can help and give advice. there's honestly nothing wrong with that. when you step into this notion he will step in the cabinet or have a formalized position in the administration going around the voters and plucking him in there because he's her husband, that's when people get a little uncomfortable. >> as you say, he is a senior states marsh who has been through -- >> and maybe the most popular democrat in the country.

>> i will swivel around and pivot to ari. sorry i had my back to you. >> are you on television? >> just working. she cannot appoint bill clinton as a member of her cabinet because of what happened to jfk, rig right. >> jfk famously appointed his brother as attorney general something by today's standards would seem unthinkable and didn't draw a lot of criticism then and after for a range of reasons, congress passed a law banning the appointment of a family member including a spouse to any position you directly control, cabinet positions to fill that. and you think back to what hillary clinton did, which was upheld by a federal appeals court was basically chair a voluntary task force. that was seen as a loophole on healthcare. >> he could potentially do something in the same vein, he could chair a task force on
