thanks for waking up with us. i'm betty nguyen. an incredible night of politics as donald trump won the oregon primary and bernie sanders took a majority of the delegates out of oregon winning the state with 53% of the vote. >> my wife just tells me that cnn has called oregon for bernie sanders. >> as for hillary clinton, she squeaked out a win in kentucky, becoming the apparent winner that race. she topped sanders by one point. both candidates will likely split the state's delegates. clinton is now within 100 delegates of securing the nomination. sanders however is considering a recount in kentucky. the bluegrass state gives candidates ten days to request one and the sanders camp is expected to make a decision regarding that recount today. however, the senator vows to fight on. even offers a rally of over 11,000 strong this prediction. >> i think we have a real shot to win primaries in a number of

the states that will be coming up. and go tell secretary clinton she might nervous, i think we're going to win here in california. >> nbc's chris jansing is reporting the sanders camp could change the way they approach the crucial california primary with 548 delegates up for grabs. the campaign is now open to airing ads in the very expensive california media market. and they're looking to barn storm the state with massive rallies. early voting for the june 7th primary began last week. all of that came on the heels of a very tense day for democrats as sanders came under pressure from party leaders to denounce ugly tactics used by his supporters during saturday's democratic convention out in nevada. tactics that included throwing chair, shouting down speakers and harassing the state party chair with death threats. sanders instead struck back with a defined statement. he dismissed party complaints as nonsense. and insisted his supporters were not being treated with fairness and respect.

and sanders had a message for democratic leaders at his rally late last night. >> let me also say a word to the leadership of the democratic party. i say to the leadership of the democratic party, open the doors, let the people in. >> meanwhile on the republican side, donald trump may have finally buried the hatchet with fox news anchor megyn kelly. appearing in a primetime special last night the two went head to head on some the nastier things trump has said including calling her a bimbo. >> bimbo? >> well, there was a retweet, yeah. did i say that? >> many times. >> oh, okay. excuse me. >> going to stop that as president? >> i'm going to stop it about you now because i think i like our relationship right now. so i'm certainly not going to do it again. yeah -- >> now you have my cell phone number. that's much more efficient.

>> you gave me your cell phone number. >> you promised not to use it for evil. >> i promise. you won't ever see that. >> after the special, trump tweeted well, that is it. well done, and they all lived happily ever after. on a more serious note, he told reuters he would make a dramatic shift and he's willing to talk to north korean leader kim jong un. he put his income in excess of $500 million and net worth in excess of $10 billion. the busy trump reached a joint fund-raising agreement with the rnc to build a national war chest for the general election. hillary clinton and the dnc have been building their joint fund-raising since the -- they reached an agreement back in august of last year. and while campaigning in puerto rico, former president bill clinton talked about the outsized role he would take in his wife's administration. >> i'll be the hired help.

this is what i do. this kind of work. i have for 12 years as the governor, eight years as the president. she's the best qualified person at this time that i have ever seen and she doesn't need two for one. she needs every american to help her succeed. i'll do what i can. the tsa is sounding the alarm saying much needed staff and resources to chicago's o'hare airport. this comes after more than 450 passengers missed their flights and were stranded at the airport due to massive security lines overnight sunday and monday. now the head of the tsa is apologizing to travelers. >> we had a significant challenge in chicago yesterday. i don't know what that was. we're fixing that, that's a great concern to me. i tell people i want to apologize for doing our job well, but i do apologize to the people who found themselves stranded in chicago. >> chicago has consistently seen the worst lines in the country. passengers are warned to arrive at least three hours before their flight.

homeland security chief jeh johnson promises more than 300 tsa officers will be assigned to midway and o'hare by mid august and 100 more part-time workers will be promoted to full-time nationwide. they plan to hire more than 750 new screening officers. the tsa says travel numbers are up this year and has promised more overtime and bomb sniffing dogs. a major headache for new york city commuters. a massive fire underneath elevated train tracks brought metro north trains to a halt during last night's rush hour. the fire started in the garden nursery and it caused an explosion when the flames reached propane and fertilizer. new york's governor says the fire was so intense it bent the steel girders that support the overpass. repair crews are working through the night. commuters stranded at grand central station had to find alternate ways of getting home. everyone in the middle class working americans, you are getting a raise. all courtesy of new regulations from the white house.

president obama even issued a memo on white house.gov to alert the department of labor is taking action. the plan will impact around 4.2 million salaried workers who must be paid overtime. the new overtime pay threshold is for those earning $47,476 a year. this move is part of the administration's attempt to help the middle class and while some businesses do welcome the measure, critics say it could backfire if employers decide to slash workers' hours. the rules kick in on december 1st. we have some dramatic video of a rescue of a man trapped inside the burning suv. it happened sunday in anchorage, alaska. police arrived to find the driver inside, his arm pinned inside the door. together with some bystanders they were able to rock the car and free the man's arm. >> push! go go go! he's out. >> that man escaped through a

house political guru steve kornacki explains how sanders could pull it off. >> to win that category, pledged delegates, at the end of this primary season, when he says steep hill, this is what he means. i don't know if steep hill is the way to describe this. right now coming into tonight, hillary clinton led little thick marker here, she led by 282. what do we know? it was a nail biter in kentucky. she wins in a squeaker. looks like she'll net one delegate out of kentucky. what does that -- boy, i wish we had a thinner marker here. 283. hillary clinton would lead by 283. oregon she is leading by six or eight points. let's say that holds -- excuse me, sanders. let's say sanders nets 11 delegates out of that, he is down 272. this is all that's left. let's be real generous to bernie sanders. let's say he wins -- he wins 70, 80% of the votes in south dakota, in north dakota, in

montana, and new mexico. these look like they could be sanders' states. let's say it's landslides and he nets from the states a toetss -- total of 45 delegates over hillary clinton. 272 would come down to 227. if you want to erase a pledged delegate gap in california, you need to win 73.5% of the vote, roughly, statewide. bernie sanders would have to win an incredibly large, diverse state with 73% of the vote or more to erase that gap. by the way, if he loses new jersey by anything near the margin that the polls suggests or if he fails to meet the incredibly, incredibly generous projections we're allowing here that 73% shoots up close to 80%. bernie sanders gets a win tonight, this is impressive. it's a closed primary state t first one he's won. but keep in mind the scale of this. when he wins big states he'll win by six or eight points

tonight. when he won michigan he won it by a point. he needs to win california by 50 points. you want to call this a steep hill, maybe there's another term. >> politico reporter daniel strauss joins me from washington to talk about this. good morning. >> good morning. >> all right, so bernie sanders keeps winning some primaries although he needs to win a whole lot and by a large margin as we heard there. is he doing more harm than good at this point for the party by staying in this? >> i mean, there's a definite question about that and supporters of hillary clinton feel that way. they feel that the longer bernie sanders is in this race, the more he distracts hillary clinton from attacking donald trump. and the more he requires her to focus on the primary which she essentially has locked up. it's hard for standers to get the nomination at this point. >> well, he's going to continue on. he wants to barn storm california. will that help him turn super delegates to his side? >> it's hard to tell. the sanders campaign is trying to win over super delegates.
