sanders made it clear in a speech last night in carson, california as clinton was narrowly winning the kentucky primary, sanders said he has no plans to go away quietly. >> the democratic party is going to have to make a very profound and important decision. it can do the right thing and open its doors and welcome into the party people who are prepared to fight for real economic and social change. >> sanders campaign manager jeff weaver continued to criticize the democratic party, including the dnc chair. you know it's a bad day for democratics when the headlines are chaos and tensions explode. how big is hillary's bernie problem now? >> huge.

huge. hillary is starting to not feel like a closer. in the last 24 hour, donald trump went on megyn kelly. they made nice. there was no headlines. today he comes out very presidentially, particularly in you're a republican. very credible list of supreme court justice candidates. at the same time hillary cannot put bernie away. one candidate looks like a winner and the other doesn't in that simple terms. the other problem you have is the continuing message of bernie is the same message of trump. the system is rigged against you and hillary is the system. as long as bernie is around, he's doing trump's dirty work. he doesn't have go after hillary. this is a bad moment in time. >> it is. they're going to the convention

to fight to try to win the nomination and change the rules and democratic party, to fight against what they think is bad about the democratic brand. they're not going to the convention to unify. the other thing that i think is a big problem, you want to be happy warrior. it's not just happy but warrior. she can't put away bernie sanders. that's not someone that looks like a warrior while she's having trouble with trump. >> the scary thing about sanders is he's 74 years old. he's an old man. i don't mean to be sexist. we were probably still have ted cruz around if he were 70 years old. he's got a future. when you're older, you just don't give a crap about anything anymore. even when he does lose the nomination, you wonder what is this angry old man going to be doing. >> his supporters don't look at the inclintons as a good second

choice. she can smooth this out but after last night, a lot tougher. >> in case infighting wasn't enough, in the past 24 hours, democratic front-runner woke up to troubling headlines. according to a new poll, clinton is neck and neck in trump with a matchup. sanders leads by double digits. what are the three big things we found fascinating. a high percentage of men still don't like clinton. in these matchups trump ties with sanders. number two, we found this one really surprising. trump beats both clinton and sanders among young voters ages 18 to 29. finally, independents favored bernie sanders over donald trump in a hypothetical november matchup but they don't seem to shift to clinton if she's the

democratic nominee. take a look at these numbers. sanders beats trump among independents by 20 points. clinton loses. new hampshire only has four electoral votes. it's got a hot senate race. you have independents going in one direction. >> this is a state that's seen clinton and trump up close over a long period of time. the fact that trump is ties there now doesn't mean she won new hampshire. i can't imagine a worse thing. plenty of new hampshire democrats that are worried about trump's appeal to independents in that state. >> things are just feeling shaky right now but it's only may. it's very hard to move her. she's baked in. her big issue is she's

untrustworthy. you're not going to move that. his big issue is temperament. you can move that. the numbers are not lining up strong with her. if i got to move the handles on each of these, hers is a much tougher handle to maneuver. >> trump's people agree with that and the clinton people claim they don't. i wonder if they secretly agree. this is mind boggling. you think about the popularity of the previous nominee. she'll have to ask herself some fundamental questions. to be losing to donald trump amongst young people in new hampshire, i can't imagine a single poll result that i would find more cautionary if i were them. they switch from sanders and go

welcome back. 11 names are on donald trump's list he could consider to fill the supreme court seat. he released his picks includes three women, eight men. more than half are from midwestern states including battleground states like michigan and iowa. he put out the names for conservatives who are concerned about his credentials. how did he do with this list? >> heritage foundation will be very happy.

pretty much off their website. he was very presidential. republican presidential. put a list together that nobody can argue with. maybe left off mike lee. >> included his brother. >> all he has to do now is act typical. a political science student could have put that list together. >> for a lot of people worried about trump, if they say okay, if trump picks from this list, that's enough. they can get over all their over reservations because the battle cry will be, you may have reservations about trump, but do you want to give up a coequal branch for a generation.

>> they're never voting for hillary. why not go a little more moderate. he had to wave this flag. >> this is a flag you have to wave for a certain type of voter. the delegates will like this list. it's been denounced already by one of the leading judicial voices. it also speaks to, again, for a certain type of republican, speaks to a bed rock principle about constitutionalism. i think it's a smart list. he'll take some heat but in the left-right world that's the kind of heat you take. >> we have to be honest. we have lost count of all the things donald trump has said about foreign policy that would have probably torpedos any other presidential campaign. he called nato obsolete. he's threatened a trade war with

china. the presumptive republican nominee added another page with an interview published yesterday that he said he would be happy to open up talks about the communist country's nuclear program. the new york times magazine cover story posted today, trump also told reporter he's never been to iraq. he said the most threatening place he's been is brooklyn, new york and then mentioned cities around the united states like oakland, california that trump called among the most dangerous in the world. any of these are risk for trump. >> americans are not happy with the way things are going overseas. i know all the clinton fans will say this is irresponsible. you can't be saying what trump

knows what he's doing. i've talked to him about nato. i think in line with the american people and in the case of nato, i think perfectly reasonable policy positions to take. he's doing a lot of what barack obama did. he walk about this on morning joe this morning. barack obama said he would be with foreign leaders and hillary clinton said same thing. irresponsib irresponsible. that's a different style of leadership. >> i think the wackiest of the wacky -- don't worry. i'm leaving. that's it. the last day i'm here. >> the phone. >> it's arming japanen and south korea with nukes. that was kind of huh, what? he is that nicholson character. you want me on that wall. you need me on the wall. ironically part of his women problem can be solved with some

spotlight this morning when the network aired her conversation with trump's daughter ivanka who was asked about the new york times weekend story detailing her father's behavior with women. >> i found it to be pretty disturbing based on the fact i know them and obviously, i very much know them in the capacity as a daughter and in the capacity as an executive who has worked along side of him. i'm not in every interaction my father has but he's not a groper. it's not who he is. i've known him my whole life and he has total respect for women. when i think about myself as feminist, it's important that women are treated equally. he treats women and men equally. >> the poll shows he has a 69% unfavorable rating among women. how does he change that? >> you would have to ask him. i think he is running his campaign. i think people are just starting to see who he is. the race is different now.

i think that people will be able to see a softer side of him. >> it's not the most original state but people are impressed by her. all three of his oldest kids have been out campaigning. how big of an asset do you think she will be? >> i livered in her with a building for years. she is one of the most impressive human beings, not young women, impressive young women i've met. bright, in charge, elegant. >> 360-degree awareness of what's going on. >> he's her dad. he, along with ivanka made her. he has three great kids. i said this on morning joe the other day. certain ways trump is a feminist in the most important way. he's promoted women before anybody did in the construction business. he said some boorish things but

in a same way that's equal opportunity. he's going to promote them equal opportunity and i'm going to insult like i do men. she's a stunni inning example o this. we have never seen an offspring in a campaign with the power this woman will have. >> he's got five kids. the three olders who have been out campaigning. i think that they will be foolish if they do not put her front and center at the convention. i'd have her speak every night at the convention. she is a national brand who is the best validater her dad could have and as i said, she got a 360-degree understanding of the world and the people. >> i stand up and say this could be a future president of the united states, my daughter. that would be a better trump president. up next, it's interesting, we'll talk democratic congressman tim ryan. more about the hubbub in his

global. we have enough fires in the world. we don't need a president of the united states starting more. we need a president that's putting out fires and trump continues to start these fires. i think that's going to help us as democrats really be able to unite the party. i think that's going to happen as soon as these elections are over in june. >> which of these is closer to true? hillary clinton and bernie sanders agree on most major issues or bernie sanders is too liberal to get elected president of the united states. >> i think they agree on the principles of the issues of the day. there's no question about it. the question is what direction do we want to move into in the next few years. we got tremendous challenges. i think both hillary and bernie and the democratic philosophy, today, especially compared to trump are getting us ready for the new economy. look, if you look at 40% of the net new jobs, they're being -- they're coming from start ups.

the top 1% of the start ups are creating net new jobs. we have an agenda. hillary clinton has an agenda. >> maybe ask you this way. is bernie sanders more liberal than hillary clinton? >> of course. he's a socialist. >> he agrees with him on most major issues? >> i said on principles. on the fact you are intentions of utilizing government on behalf of working class families, making college for affordable, making investments into the economy. there's no question that a socialist is more liberal than progressive democrat. >> one more to flush this out. what's something a specific position as a socialist where you'd say she's not as liberal? >> i think you take the college

plan. there's a big difference between free college and debt free college. part of it is making sure we control costs. hilla hillary clinton is asking for work study programs. we're making sure they will walk out of college debt free. they may have to pay a little bit along the way. they'll have an opportunity to do that. if you look at what she'll provide for young people, a ability to start a business, entrepreneurship. she provides a lot of opportunity that will grow the economy for the millennials. i think she run circles around bernie sanders and donald trump. >> i want to jump in for a second. we saw some very troubling numbers with the millennials,

she's had an 80% unfavorability in new hampshire. why are young people not flocking to bernie sanders but shunning her? >> well, i think a lot of it is they don't quite understand yet what hillary wants to do. i think once we communicate that and once they come together after the primary, she's running circles around donald trump with millennial going into the fall. they will hear about her plan. what's america 2.0? what's america 3.0? that's what hillary clinton is promoting for all of us and especially for the millenials. you have to work with the government. you can't have the blustery statements. you have to have a real plan.

as we mentioned earlier, donald trump released the names of 11 people he says he would consider for the supreme court. here to discuss whether his picks will be enough, nbc news pete williams joins us from washington and makes his debut

on this program which has us overjoyed. thank you for joining us here. >> you have a very low overjoy threshold. >> no, this is an honor for us. 11 names, which ones jump out to you as symbolic or important. >> he's already said that he consider two of the names on the list. william pryor of alabama and diane sykes. they were put on the bench by president george w. burksh. he's the brother of utah republican senator mike lee who was ted cruz' biggest senate supporter.

>> it seems like they're all names of people who conservatives can look at and get the exact signal. these are strict constructionalists who can be seen in the mold of scalia in the terms of judicial philosophy. >> i suppose the trump people will be pleased by the response they are getting. the conservative groups are saying it's a good list. can we trust trump to stick with it? the liberal group is saying this is a terrible list. i suspect it's supposed to do two thing, appeal to conser conservatives who will find it satisfactory. >> any names that don't appear on the list and jump out at you? >> that's the surprising thing to me. there are several names that you would think would be on any

republicans list. paul clemente now in private practice. he argues the hobby lobby case. he represented the house republicans who were opposed to same-sex marriage. brett cavanaugh former clerk to anthony is kennedy and to ken star during the clinton administration. two other appeals court judges tom griffith of the d.c. circuit. some of those names, cavanaugh and clement were on the heritage foundation list that came out earlier this year that trump's people said they looked at. >> the ones i'm familiar with, there's range of ages here. it seems to me that some of the people he left off are on the younger end of names that people consider. is that a big issue for conservatives that they want the next republican president to nominate younger justices to

stay on the bench for a longer period of time in. >> absolutely. i would say this is not a federalist society list. you would see clement and brett cavanaugh on it. put younger people and get them nominated. the obama nominees are pretty young. john roberts was young when he was nominated as well. that's been the current trend to try to get younger justices on so they can serve longer. i got to say one other thing about one surprising name on this list. donald willett who is one of the state supreme court justices on the list. maybe he's on because he's a prolific tweeter and maybe that appeals to the trump people. his tweets are pretty much anti-trump. he sort of mocks trumps in the tweets and said it would bring tears to your eyes if you could see trump's list of potential supreme nominees and now they are one. >> either they didn't know or they have a twisted sense of

humor. one or the other. >> it's interesting if we can trust him on this list. is this the one area where people feel he's a moderate. he's just putting this list out and once he's president, he's going to do what he pleases? more so with this guy than anyone. >> pete, check me if i'm wrong. i don't remember any nominee putting out a list like this. i've heard them talk about which current justices or past justices they like or maybe one or two names, but i don't remember any nominee putting out a list. it does go to the question of can trump satisfy people with just a list than some sort of ironclad commitment. >> it's unusual for that reason. also we don't know any of the people on the list were asked by the trump campaign if they would be willing to be considered, willing to have their names out there. the downside to having your name on this list is if he does stick with the list, there's only going to be one person chosen.

do you want to be one of the also rands. there's lots of odd questions that the list raises. >> you said, i think correctly that these are a group of mainstream center right judges and justices and people who the conservative groups will like. is there any difference between their judicial philosophy and the people he left off. are there more moderate in some way than a clement or cavanaugh? >> cavanaugh is pretty conservative. i can't think of something in their past that would leave them off the list. i'll contrast that with jeffrey s sutton who is widely respected, but perhaps has a stain on his record as an appeals court judge who thought obama care did meet the constitutional test. perhaps that ruled him out. i don't know why cavanaugh and clement wouldn't be on the list.

i don't know if you've been yelled at for asking him a process question. i have. i think bernie sanders over the last 24/48 hours has increased the rift. i'm not sure yet to what degree but i think it's worse than 48 hours ago. >> first of all, bernie sanders two things, he has every right to continue in the race if he wants. if he's serious about what he said the other night is he does not want to see donald trump be elected, i think he wouldn't allow a billionaire to try to represent or pretend to represent the interest of the middle class. he's got to recognize he doesn't have a shot at winning. he has some responsibility to calm some of these supporters of his down. there's no problem with being passionate but it reach a point it has to stop. finally debbie wasserman schultz, give him ha he wants. if he wants a group of people to talk about college

affordabilities, let's have that conversation as a party. there's no need to have this kind of rift continue if we can avoid it. you would negotiate a very different deal much sooner. >> bernie sanders is not hillary clinton's problem. hillary clinton is hillary clinton's problem. let's say tomorrow he disappears. this is the problem. when you go to sell hillary, the only place to go is to sell fear of trump. when you come back to hillary, it's this piece of clay where there's nothing to work with because people don't want experience. they don't trust her. there's nothing in her dna, there's no attribute, we used to talk about brand attributes, there's no attribute to sell with other than selling against trump. that's the problem. >> i disagree. i think the attribute of experience -- >> people don't want that. that's naa negative. >> i think it will come to a point there will be some want for that. clear out of field of the most qualified republicans running a long time. i think we will get back to

that. if we don't, you may be right. >> you sound a lot like jeb bush supporters. >> everybody will focus on california. how is that primary shaping up where sanders has put in fair amount of time and has been drawing big crowds? >> i think california could very well turn out to be a bigger story about this race than many people have assumed it would be. there's been a general sense this race is over. it's matter of her buttoning it up on june 7th. i know in internal polling that it's close enough that this could be race that bernie sanders -- >> is that an open primary or closed? >> it's a bit odd. for democrats it's partway open so if you show up at the polls and you're not registered, you can register at that point and vote democrat. you can't do that on the republican side. the republican primary is closed. that's a wild card. it's a different state than she's faced or we have seen a lot of in this contest.

it's both diverse and has this open primary. a bit of a wild card. sanders will camp out there for the next couple of days. orb coupu or couple of weeks. the crowds were more diverse particularly young latinos. >> unlike where they were yesterday in kentucky, going on television is a major commitment. any sign that either will do that and if not, what is the campaign about except rallies and local coverage? >> both camps are still weighing how to go up on tv or whether to go up on tv. the clinton campaign could have opportunities in spanish language media that would be less expensive that they could try to exploit if they wanted to. at this point, that's really the question. they put one of their best organizers on the ground. for them it's a question of whether or not it's too little

too late. >> how does he create good news days for her in. >> i think she's got to continue to do what she is strongest at and that's a policy wonk. if people don't come around to it, we'll have a real problem. one of the area where is we have to get a big turn out. >> if we get two weeks before the election, unfortunely, we're not going to start the top of the show this way. that's the problem. where she lives and where her strong suit is not where the media lives and not where voters want to be. everything bernie sanders is saying does not make sense. free college does not make sense. it doesn't matter if people want to hear it. there's range. i don't know what you would do with hillary. >> if donald trump is making the case, he will represent middle class interest than you give speech where is you contrast

what he's done in terms of people that have worked for him and what she's done this public policy. there's way to exploit her strength. she's not figured that out yet. >> for all the problems hillary clinton has, donald trump has a huge image problem. how do you rebrand him? >> we talk and about this earlier, his issue is temperament. you can move temperament like he did today. a very kind of intelligent republican list. her issues of non-trust and establishment, you can't move either of those. >> you sound like paul manafort. >> i'm a marketing guy. i can move trump in the public consciousness easily. she's too baked in. that's the problem. >> the culture many the campaign is the same as the obama platform was. are they worried?

are they worried about this phase or do they think it's overblown? the notion she's got to continue to go to the convention where trump seems to be unifying the republicans. >> i would say there's a general worriness on the part of the the clinton camp how this plays out between now and july. the question is how long does this last. i think the question is wa does b bernie sanders do to land the plane? that's a wild card enough to give people pause. >> one word, debates. she's got to get to the debates. >> four weeks ago we were saying there's going to be an open, fragmented convention for republicans. democrats will sew it up.
