reflecting a conservative man, a life-long republican in utah who feels deeply offended by trump's foreign policy. >> one of the strongest anti-trump voices coming from the state of utah these days. andrea mitchell, thank you very much. stay right here with msnbc, we have all the latest on the egyptair investigation. hi, everybody, i'm thomas roberts here live at msnbc world headquarters in new york. and it's nearly 24 hours later as the egyptair flight disappeared. and the latest search video here taken from the military before night fall. now, the black boxes are still missing, the greek officials deny any debris has been found,
3:01 pm
but this contradicts any earlier information saying that the debris had been recovered. egyptair released information on the pilots who had thousands of flying experience. and the families await news on the crash. the egyptair minister says that a terrorism attack is more likely than tour. more on the investigation. >> the fbi as you would expect is working with our partners around the world to try and gain a better understanding of what happened. we in the national security business and law enforcement business have tried to make the world very small. so when something like that happens we try to share information and the process is going on right now. >> no americans were on board the aircraft, but the u.s. navy is joining the search effort at the request of the greek government. i want to join with keir simmons, who has more on the
3:02 pm
latest security protocols at charles de gaulle airport. >> reporter: well, thomas, the officials here have put in place some changes in the security protocols in recent years, after the charlie hebdo attacks, in fact, members of the staff here had their security clearance removed because of further intelligence investigations, prior to all of this. thomas, it's now midnight here in paris. 24 hours ago that flight was in the air, an hour into its flight. and they are still looking for the wreckage of that plane in the mediterranean. just to clarify, what it looks like happened, by the way, is that the greeks are saying that they studied the debris that was found. and on closer inspection it turns out to not be the plane. so the search will resume at first light. you can see here now that it is
3:03 pm
dark here in paris. it will be dark, too, across the mediterranean. but that search will be absolutely crucial. and we have been talking through the day, thomas, too, about if it does turn out that there was a bomb on board this plane. and we don't know that. we simply can't say that. but the evidence that there may have been an explosion points perhaps in that direction. if that turns out to be the case then your question is very -- is a good one. because there will be a spotlight again on charles de gaulle here on the security procedures. the question being asked will be how did the bomb get on board the plane? >> and keir, as we know right now this is a greek investigation, with the u.s. military resources available, as well. but out of an abundance of caution, the french parliament went ahead with the move to expand their security measures that have been in place now for the next two months, correct?
3:04 pm
>> reporter: yeah, that is correct, in fact, the french minister describing it as an ad hoc coalition. we don't think that that changed the extension of the emergency situation here was connected to what happened. we think that was going to happen anyway. they are looking at a soccer tournament coming down the line in the next months in france, and the protection. the french intelligence, the intelligence across europe and the u.s. will be looking at every aspect of this. the passenger manifests, where the aircraft was before it was here in paris. the security procedures that are in place here at this airport. and they will be very, very keen to understand what went wrong as everybody is, because of course, it has implications for the future. we know already that it was --
3:05 pm
that the metrojet plane that went down, the allegation was there was a bomb on board that plane. we know similarly, a plane taking off from somalia, is this the next example of that type of anti-aviation operation by perhaps an artist of al qaeda? there is no proof of that yet, but that is what the intelligence security will be asking themselves. >> still waiting for a lot of answers to these questions. keir simmons there in paris we know you have been working around the clock there in paris. appreciate it. and we head now to the home base for this investigation. we have more on that part of the story. >> reporter: well, thomas, it has been almost 24 hours since the plane disappeared about 150 miles from the island of crete, where i'm standing. and still, we do not know where
3:06 pm
the debris was found on thursday afternoon by the greek search and rescue and recovery vessels and airplanes, are part of that plane. now, initially on thursday afternoon, the greek defense minister said that they were definitely part of the plane. then that was confirmed by the foreign ministry in egypt. and then later on in the day the head of the air administration and the foreign safety administration said he didn't agree, he did not think they were part of the missing plane. and that is a big problem for investigators. because that is like looking for a needle in the haystack. at least they found that information, where the plane lost communication, where they could look for the wreckage and especially they could look for what is most important for their job to identify what really
3:07 pm
happened to the plane. the black box. and every hour that goes by without them knowing exactly what the location of the accident is right out there in the middle of the mediterranean, is an hour too late for them. because of course the currents can take away pieces of debris. the wreckage can sink even deeper, right to the bottom of the mediterranean sea. and with it the black box, and the black box is the only thing right now that can give right immediate answers to investigators. what caused the accident? was it a human error? was it mechanical or technical failure? or was it a bomb as it has been suggested. well, now of course, it's the middle of the night here in crete. the search and rescue and recovery operation is now being suspended for the night. and it will resume tomorrow morning. and the big question for the authorities is, are we going back to the exact same location where we found that debris
3:08 pm
without even knowing whether they were part of the missing plane? and do we search for a wider area, thomas? >> claudio reporting for us in crete tonight, that is the home base for the investigation. as he pointed out, it is dark there right now so this is a lull period before dawn and the investigation resumes. cary, this is really important, the time line figuring out exactly what took place, what more have you learned? >> well, you know, they have a time line, a period where they know they were in communication with the air control. and then as the plane went into the egyptian air space there was an attempt to make contact with the egyptian authorities. but that didn't work out. you see here 8:30 p.m., they make contact. and at 8:40 p.m., the flight disappeared from radar. and 8:50, attempts to contact
3:09 pm
from the egyptian air space failed. that is when they realized they had something. this is the black box, it is what they're looking for. it is actually orange, a cockpit data recorder and also there is the voice recorder. now, the data recorder will provide information if this is found because it will tell people, the experts, what the plane was doing, the mechanics, how things were working and if there was a failure with the general operation of the plane and the way it works. it has everything from the way the engines are running to the way the lines are providing information. this is a very advanced aircraft. it has a lot of what they call fly-by wires. so a lot of the information is record recorded. also there is the cockpit voice recorder. and what it does is pick up not just the communications with the traffic control, but the airport communications. maybe they will be able to hear what was being discussed or if there was a terrorist or
3:10 pm
somebody who broke in. it also allows the pilot and co-pilot to talk about such information. if there was a search for the debris and the cockpit data recorder, this is a navy aircraft that has flown out of sicily. it now returned because it's night. but it flew over the region and it is dropping down little buoys, and the opportunity to hear the signal may send back indications of some sort of debris on the water. but it is important to note here that when you're looking for something on a sea scape that is going up and down, it's very hard to see something. what you see here is another piece of equipment that could eventually be deployed. this will actually map the bottom of the floor where they may be able to see whether there is debris in that area and
3:11 pm
whether that debris of course is from the aircraft. but trying to find this is important because there is a little bit of a time limit. this has a pinger in it. but the battery will only last so long, about a month or so. but hearing the ping sound allows them to zero in. we know, thomas, they don't know even where to look. the mediterranean is large and they're looking in and around an area near karpathos, but whether or not that is the spot, is not known. but by tomorrow it may be possible with eyes on that people see some of the debris there which will guide the authorities into where they really need to focus their attention. >> yes, time is important considering the shifting of the current, kerry sanders, thank you. and i want to talk to kevin rousseau, we're looking at kerry's description and the black box there, also the cockpit voice recorder.
3:12 pm
those are two important parts of the recorder. so can they find out exactly what happened without finding the black boxes? >> well, without finding the black boxes, they can find parts of the aircraft, the fuselage, they can see if there was metal, if it was pushed out. type of burns -- >> and they can look for signatures that will lead them in the direction on whether or not there was an explosion, whether it happened inside or outside? >> they will be able to tell if the metal was pushed, if it's internal or external, they will be able to tell that also if it was internal or external explosion. >> the reports say the plane made a sharp 90 degree turn to the left, before the right, before falling, what does that say to you for your air force training? >> for a pilot to make a hard turn it is most likely he saw something outside.
3:13 pm
now whether or not the explosion occurred inside the airplane, and he made a hard left and made a right circling turn. the other reason, too, if he saw something coming at him if it was a missile threat or shot if he sees that then he will try to break away from what he is looking at. from that point if the missile actually hit the aircraft or broke off and if it did there is a possibility that these missiles have a detonating war head. if that went off then it would send the debris into the airplane. >> and that is certainly the potential investigation that the authorities could look at. they have not ruled that out independently. obviously as we heard from everybody they're not ruling out anybody especially with the white house and french president francois hollande, and the egyptian prime minister all said these degrees of terrorism could not be ruled out. we have egyptair retracting the claim on whether or not debris was found. they say, we stand corrected.
3:14 pm
how important is it to be able to look on the grid tomorrow to be able to find anything of substance that they need to figure out what happened? >> well, the sooner the better. because like you talked about before, the tides, the longer you wait, the chances of having the debris field spread out farther, what they need is the black boxes, if they have the black boxes they can find out if it was a catastrophic failure, if multiple systems were failing, they can hear what the cockpit is saying. catastrophic, the black box would probably be on line and then next thing you know there will be nothing left on the black box, it will be empty. and that tells you that the system just failed. and the only way it failed would be if the plane was taken out of the sky by either an explosion or something like that. >> and we'll stand by, whether the authorities believe if there was an explosion or if it was
3:15 pm
nefarious, or if it was a mechanical explosion. next coming up, we'll go to president obama who has been briefed on this investigation. and we'll look at crosser investigations on whether or not it was terrorism, and that talk was a big point on the campaign trail. to the trump rally in new jersey, and what the candidates are saying in this tragedy. you're watching special coverage of the egyptair crash, 66 people were on board, including three children. >> i want to express my condolences to egypt and to all other countries impacted by the disappearance earlier this morning of the egyptair air flight over the mediterranean. which are the bad guy sketches. you need good resolution, powerful processor because the computer has to start thinking as fast as my brain does. i do this because i want my artwork to help people.

missing egypt airliner. >> it's too early to determine what caused this attack, the investigation is under way and the investigators will consider all the potential factors that could have contributed to the crash. and obviously, if there is an opportunity for the united states government to support these efforts then we will do that. and the president asks his team to keep them appraised of developments that occur. >> nbc's ron allen is outside the white house for us. and ron, explain what the white house national security team is offering. >> well, we know the fbi is involved, for example, the director, james comey, just said there is ongoing dialogue going on at this point. he also pointed out at this point there is no claim of responsibility. there is no evidence, he said, that this was an intentional
3:20 pm
act. but again, it's very early stages now. the white house administration and the officials have been trying to give a very measured response to this. they have not been engaging in the speculation on whether or not this was an explosion or terrorist attack. but clearly this happened over the mediterranean in a very volatile part of the world. the united states has been very involved working with our allies and the egyptians, as well, trying to keep apprised of the information on the attacks in paris and belgium, as well. obviously the issue of attacks is on the table. the united states has been reporting that airports like charles de gaulle and the cairo airport, the u.s. has been very involved with local authorities trying to enhance security especially when it comes to flights leaving the airport and a handful of other areas leaving and coming into the united states. now, that was not the case with
3:21 pm
this particular airliner, but the charles de gaulle airport in where this flight originated, the president we heard earlier had not been in touch with the leaders of france or egypt but that may perhaps come. and earlier we learned the president was on his way to a g-7 summit in asia and japan where he will meet with the leaders of the u.k. and germany and others, and of course the issue of global terrorism will be on the table. and the issue of what happened to this flight will certainly be a part of these discussions. if in fact this is terrorism, it comes at a time when the u.s. has stepped up its efforts to try and defeat and destroy isis. isis, we know has been very involved in trying to lash out. there were for example, a series
3:22 pm
of attacks in baghdad and iraq, which have killed scores of people, an indication that the terrorist organization is still -- is very aggressive. and trying to lash out while it's under pressure under its allies. but again, that is speculating the terrorism theory or possible theory and at this point the administration is really not going there just yet. they're waiting to see what is going on. there is a lot of intelligence-sharing going on, particularly with the fbi and the homeland security and the tsa, and with their national partners. taking at this point a very measured approach to try to keep all of this in perspective. again, the president getting regular updates. but at this point, really no definitive word on what they think might have happened there. >> ron allen at the white house, ron, thank you sir, i appreciate it. i want to bring in evan coleman, who is a senior adviser on terrorism and flash point. so evan, if this was a bomb and terrorist attack, as we hear
3:23 pm
from allen there was no claim of responsibility, if it is terrorism why haven't we heard from somebody? >> yeah, i think it is an interesting question, brought up by the fbi and i think it's a very good question. in the wake of the downing of the russian airliner in sinai, isis issued a very clear report 24 hours after this crash. in this case, we're talking almost 24 hours or so since the downing of this jet and nothing has been issued. not from isis or al qaeda, nobody has claimed responsibility for this. does that mean definitively this is not terrorism or idea, we don't know, but we know that isis has tried to communicate because they issued statements about other things. we have to seriously ask ourselves even if they were to issue a claim now did they really do it? can they offer any type of proof they were really involved with
3:24 pm
this? i think there is a lot of cir e circumstantial evidence, but in the absence of any physical evidence i'm not really sure why terrorism is more or less likely than a mechanical failure. i think all of these things are low likelihood, it's very unlikely that a brand-new airbus would just drop out of the sky, but terrorism is also unlikely. >> a lot of people would suspect that france said it was at war with isis, the plane took off before that. but talk about that when we know what the history of the flight was, it was a newer plane. talk about where the plane had traveled, prior to leaving from paris and how it factors into the investigation. >> sure, first of all there is a question about look, isis has declared its enemy towards
3:25 pm
france many times, just in the last couple of days they issued a report to kill or attack french nationals. this was an egypt air jetliner, carrying at least 15 people who were french, more than 30 were egyptian muslims. somebody has to explain to me what good it does to isis who is carrying mostly egyptian muslim citizens. it doesn't make a lot of sense, now, there is a possibility, more likely in charles de gaulle, and maybe at another stop, air tunisia. it is possible there was an insider who snuck on board and sabotaged the aircraft. it is certainly possible. but that is way more likely than anyone sabotaging the plane in charles de gaulle, because number one that is fairly tight. if you're able to get into that extremely tight security into a
3:26 pm
sensitive area, why would you go after a flight that is only carrying 56 people, and it's egypt airflight. if you're isis or al qaeda the logical idea is to go after a u.s. airline, or a 747 that carries hundreds of people. there are dozens of flight that leaves charles de gaulle. so why this one? >> as you point out there were 66 passengers on board, many of whom were part of the personnel, three of them security from egyptair. so based on what we know now, the fact of this and what your gut says because of your years of experience in this arena do you think it's more likely mechanical? >> you know, i will be honest with you. i don't know what the answer or cause is. i would question anybody who says they know what the cause is or they do have a gut instinct. because it definitely was not a
3:27 pm
missile. there is no terrorist group that has the capability of shooting down a plane at 30,000 feet. isis can't even shoot it over land, or in the middle of the sea, they can't do that. there is no group that can do that. so unless the russian military shot down this plane it was not a missile. >> so i think you're directly -- we had kevin russo on just a short time ago, he brought up the theory of that. >> highly unlikely. >> so you're saying it is not a theory. >> i would classify it as a ridiculous theory. i don't see it as a possibility. i think if there was something that happened it was probably explosive decompression for something that happened on the plane. whether it was mechanical, whether it was as the case in sinai where you had a bomb hidden inside a coke can, it's small, but powerful enough to blow a hole in the fuselage.
3:28 pm
and if that happened, small events are enough to cause catastrophic consequences. but until we see physical evidence. because again, remember, we didn't know that the sinai incident was terrorism until we had the wreckage, until it was tested, until we found explosive residue. until there was a claim from somebody, until there is traces of explosive residue found until there is some scintilla of evidence, i think we have to be very careful here. it's very easy to jump to conclusions. and again, it's very unlikely that a jet drops out of the sky, but it is very unlikely that terrorism caused this as well. it is extremely unlikely. thank you very much. thank you. coming up, we'll look at the search and rescue efforts, much more on that when we come back. but with added touches you can't get everywhere else, like claim free rewards...

we are back now with the very latest on the search and rescue effort that is taking place for the missing egyptair plane. the reports of the debris from the jetliner found. those reports were quicklyversee day went on. so this is a very fluid situation, trying to find pieces of the msnbc flight. msnbc has been monitoring the search efforts. and cal, we know this has not been taking place, we have dawn
3:33 pm
that is taking place, but explain the area where the vessels will be tracking. >> yeah, i think they're looking at why they will find any type of wreckage. first, let's go ahead and chart the rough from where the plane would have gone over, in albania, into cairo. this is where the search is concentrated on, but what i want to show our viewers, this is also now ground zero for the worst refugee crisis in recent human history. you have refugees coming out of libya heading north, and egypt heading north. and syria. this type of area is going to have debris already. and this is why i think it was quite possible, the debris originally found, add to that you have a current issue here, the current mediterranean route in this area, south and north of the island. if this debris is south of the island they're going to want to
3:34 pm
search the debris, if it is north they're going to have to want to shift to the west. one other thing i want to show you, thomas, the under water here topography is unseen, this is a trough, you have the dips underneath the water here. in 2010 there was a crash off the coast of beirut, it took them months to find the aircraft. so when you pinged it with an underwater drone there was no way to tell it was actually below that level. here again, in this search area this is one of the deepest parts of the mediterranean right there. >> we know a lot is going to surround crete, the island right above the circle that you drew, the area of the port city where they're going to have their home base. thank you. straight ahead for you, the former ntsb investigator shows

the ten in the last contest, she understands the frustration from sanders and his supporters. but if it seems this will go down to a floor flight they would like it to go down to a floor flight at the convention. is senator sanders going down in the nomination or is he trying to carve out something completely different for himself, much more as an independent? >> secretary clinton did, when that very contentious race ended up, by the way, much more pledged. she stepped aside and said he won, barack obama won, i'm going to endorse him and campaign for him. the sanders campaign indicated they will take it to the floor of the convention. look, there is several months before that happens, but you can tell the way he is acting, that very defiant statement, they feel like they have a chance and can do well in the upcoming states, but it will be tough, thomas, she will do very well in

new jersey, which is another big state voting soon and probably will do well in california. chances are new jersey will put her over the top with delegates. >> and a smart strategy, from the sanders campaign to let hillary clinton kind of play it out with donald trump, who has already pivoted to the general, let him attack her and maybe wait for some type of shoe to drop that would send her off course and line him up? >> yeah, and i think some of that would be sort of a hail mary. not that this is what people are wanting. but obviously something could evolve in the e-mail scandal, something like that. >> the potential indictment you mean, for her or aides? >> exactly, exactly, so they could be waiting off the sidelines for that. but if they can do that while not being in the race i think what sanders is going to confront if he does not already, is what he wants out of the nomination battle. if he is not going to be the nominee does he want something

probability it may be something mechanical? >> i think evan coleman just brilliantly and methodically went through so many different scenarios that could have happened on either side of the equation and showed how the likelihood was so low. i thought it was a brilliant comment. so i guess i'm with him, there were scenarios that one has to consider in something like that. one thing i disagree with evan, he said why are people instantly jumping to the conclusion, that it could be terrorism? well, one it's the neighborhood. two, it's the terrorist groups that say they want to attack. and egypt is the anchor of the middle east, we have seen tourism just go down. so there are lots of reasons why one would think about terrorism in the contextual sense, even though we don't have evidence as of yet that that is what caused this crash. >> so we know that most of these
