building on the campus of ucla in los angeles. two people are confirmed dead. the ucla chief of police telling report ears short time ago it is not clear if one of the victims was indeed the shooter. the chief said they are still in the middle of an active investigation trying to make sure there are no victims, they're searching to make sure there is not a suspect in the area. our reporter, pete williams, is reporting it is not out of the realm of possibility this is a murder-suicide but they have not confirmed that. the chief saying there are still dozens of people inside the engineering building and we've seen photos from someone saying they're inside campus, inside a building and pictures of social media of teams moving door-to-door inside that engineering building. pete patterson is stawith us, b pete williams covers all things
12:01 pm
justice related. you've been working the phones. what do we know at this hour? >> kate, authorities are describing this as a possible murder-suicide. we can only guess why that is, the campus of ucla in southern california. this is the building that they have been looking at. we assume the reason they're y saying it's a possible murder-suicide, because of forensic evidence they found at the scene but we don't know precisely why they've come to that conclusion or at least that's their tentative conclusion. they say these were two men. the two victims. it's not over in terms of lock-down because there have been other reports of people with guns on campus they're trying to check out. it's been more than two hours with no further reports of
12:02 pm
gunfire and no further reports of people being shot. all the reports at this point is this was a single act that happened about two hours ago and this massive response is a by the book report of a confirmed shooting on a college campus in a big city. >> pete, it caught my ear when you mentioned last hour there have been reports of possible sightings of other people with guns, could that well be law enforcement people are seeing and not knowing it's a law enforcement officer with a gun? >> reporter: almost certainly some of them are. we see it happen over and over again with a response like this. you put people together and people are sheltered in place and hear that see something say something thing we're all told about, when ever they see somebody with a gun they will call that in, very often a law
12:03 pm
enforcement person carrying a weapon responding. so far, no confirmed reports of anybody else with a gun. all reports indicates this was a single incident and that it's over. >> we can only hope. as brian has been saying, we feel for the two victims and families and getting horrible news and hope it's not worse than that. let's go to jacob soboroff, covering these events. the dcampus has been on lock-down, what are we hearing? >> reporter: just in to us, in addition to this being a potential murder-suicide, we're hearing in the nbc news los angeles bureau, that a note and a gun were found on the scene again. according to multiple law enforcement sources here in the nbc news in los angeles bureau. a little bit of context again about where ucla is and why we have seen such a robust law enforcement response here. smack in the middle of the city
12:04 pm
of los angeles. los angeles is known as the city without a center, but i think it's fair to say we have multiple centers in los angeles downtown los angeles being one of them. westwood with tens of thousands of students at ucla is another center bordered by four huge los angeles neighborhoods. at any given time tens of thousands of people may be in the general vicinity, why you see the los angeles police department taking the lead over the ucla police department. >> jacob, just to clarify what you've been reporting, a note, you say a note, i'm assuming a note written by someone who took their own life, is that what you're talking about? >> reporter: again, what we're hearing from law enforcement sources is a note and gun and given what we're hearing about potential murder-suicide, that certainly sounds like a plausible situation. the specific language we're hearing from law enforcement is a note and a gun.
12:05 pm
>> the campus remains on lock-down, is that correct? we're still seeing social media posted of people barricading themselves in rooms posting pictures. >> reporter: someone i know quite well in boelter hall adjacent to the hall where this took place, as of several minutes ago they are still in lock-down in that building. >> stand by with us, jacob. let's go to jim cavanaugh who remains with us, former atf. when you hear the report from sources of a note and gun found on the scene, we can't confirm but would lead one to think this may have been an isolated incident. is jim with us? >> yeah. i'm still here. strong possibility, kate, if those facts hold you could have a murder-suicide. when officers find a firearm next to two bodies, that's an
12:06 pm
indicator. it's not an absolute. if you find a suicide note with the reason for why somebody done me wrong, the detectives then are going to look at who are these people and do they have a prior relationship, business, academ academic, personal. and they'll be going through that pretty quickly. that's what ucla and lapd detectives are doing, going through these guys' wallets, who are they? why are they here? do they work here? students here? is there a grudge? reason for this? what's going on. they're quickly putting facts together to work toward a lead category that they can say this is likely a murder-suicide. while that's going on, kate, detectives are doing that and forensics comes in, s.w.a.t. teams will safely evacuate the surrounding area and make double sure everybody is safe. >> let me interrupt. we have lapd chief, charlie
12:07 pm
beck, briefing reporters. >> this is what has occurred. about 10:00 this morning, a homicide and suicide occurred in the engineering facility. engineering part of the ucla campus on the south side. it appears it is entirely conta contained. we believe there are no suspects outstanding and no continuine i threat to ucla's campus. we're in the process of relea releasing students from lock-down but we need to do so in an orderly fashion and in a way that allows us to make sure there are no other participants. at that point, this investigation will be hand offender to robbery homicide division of los angeles police department. the coroner will take custody of the bodies and this will become a homicide investigation. i can't hear you.
12:08 pm
>> can you tell us about the murder-suicide. >> louder, please! >> the method of suicide is gunshot wound. i won't go into it any further, it is early in the investigation. many many questions are unanswered at this point. i think the important thing for people to take away from this is that the campus is now safe. the issue that has occurred has been contained. we are in the process of rele e releasing the campus back to the students. they're in their finals. this is a very stressful time for them and we're trying to alleviate that. we do not believe -- there is no evidence to support outstanding suspects at this point but we are, out of an abundance of caution, going to continue our search of several of the buildings adjacent to the crime scene. >> can you confirm reports of a suicide note found? >> there is evidence that could be a suicide note but we do not know that at this point. i do not know that at this
12:09 pm
point. >> male? female? >> two male adults. >> where did it happen? was this a classroom or office? >> a small office in the engineering building. >> were they both students? >> i don't know that. >> did they know each other? >> we don't have the identities, nor would i release them until the coroner has verified that. you can ask all the questions about that. there is a gun at the scene. >> were they dead at the scene or hospital. >> they were both deceased at scene. >> shots fired? >> ucla pd responded to three shots fired. we don't know if there were more than that. at least three. thank you all very much. there will be continuing information and the school will go about its business of re-opening. thank you very much. >> all right. that was los angeles police department chief charlie beck speaking with reporters. the issue that occurred has been
12:10 pm
conta contained, a homicide and suicide occurred around 10:00 a.m. pacific time this morning in los angeles. the chief saying it was entirely contained to that event. he did say they're slowly all allowing students to come out of lock-down and going through an orderly process of releasing the students to make sure they ch k checked every corner. at this point, pete williams, it looks like this was two people, two males we learned, in a small office, one shot by the other and one who took his life by suicide. >> exactly, kate. that's what we've been hearing now the last several minutes and now the police chief has all but confirmed it saying they're investigating it as a murder-suicide, that's what it appears to be to them. a gun was found at the scene, but presumably they know more than it was a gun, i'm sure have a quick look to see whether it would be temperature with the wounds. it probably was the gun used in
12:11 pm
the shooting, as well as a note found at the scene. he wouldn't characterize it as a suicide note but other officials we talked to said they do believe it is a suicide note although i say officials have not read the note themselves, just had that fact described to them. we heard that from many sources. as we suspected, as it certainly appeared here, this was a single incident, single shooting incident, a massive response of the ucla campus for the obvious reason you have a concentrated population of vulnerable young people and we've seen the scenario play out before but you have a well trained, well equ equipped police department responding by the book, fire department, federal agencies as well, and then the second complicating fact is you have to empty out that building, get the students out, go through it once quickly, go through it a second
12:12 pm
time more thoroughly. that as we just discussed a moment ago, at the same time, the police and campus police were getting calls other people being seen with firearms on campus, none the police chief said checked out. the very strong likelihood on all of those, it was other law enforcement people in plainclothes responding with firearms and then students called in and said, i just saw somebody with a gun and that's probably what the other reports are. the police chief said there are no other suspects, this seems to be a single incident and it's over but it will take a while to return the campus to normal. >> jim cavanaugh, they noted once they are able to clear that building they will turn over the crime scene to homicide investigat investigators. >> right. that will be a slow process but a much smaller area, once they clear those adjacent buildings and classrooms, the craime scen frisk team can work that
12:13 pm
scene -- forensics team can work that scene. these homicide detectives, when they look at that scene, they can gather more information in just a matter of minutes by their expertise. i think they have an indication where it's going. >> jim cavanaugh, thank you for being with us a couple of hours, pete williams, as always, thank you for your reporting. let's switch gears, shall we, and move to politics? there is a lot of news to report on a wednesday afternoon. president obama is scheduled to speak this hour in elcart, indiana. if that sounds familiar, it's by design. he was there in 2009, the beg beginning of his presidency, to sell his economic stimulus. he's back in the same town to celebrate economic growth there. there are still people, of course, fighting to be the ones to replace president obama. just a short time ago, hillary clinton really went after donald trump with her take on today's news in the trump university case. >> trump and his employees took
12:14 pm
advantage of vulnerable americans, encouraging them to max out their credit cards, empty their retirement savings, destroy their financial futures all while making promises they knew were false from the beginning. this is just more evidence that donald trump himself is a fraud. [ applause ] >> he is trying to scam america the way he scammed all those people at trump u. >> let's go first to nbc political reporter in washington for us. hill rain tirade on twitter going after trump over and over again on these documents that emerged on trump university.
12:15 pm
>> absolutely. you heard hillary using the phrase "fraud" to define donald trump trying to draw a bright line to trump's candidacy as a whole. the one reason the campaign is doing it, it is a criticism not new and from the clinton campaign. a lot of republican rivals running against him used this same criticism. you heard old rivals trying to describe trump as a huckster trying to fool the american people and only in it for his own dollar. this comes as donald trump is performing very well against hillary clinton, when you ask voters who they think is best at managing the economy and wall street and creating jobs, donald trump is outperforming hillary clinton but she's doing better on measures like foreign policy and being a commander in chief. this is the way she's trying to go after donald trump and paint him as somebody trying to take
12:16 pm
advantage of the american people at their expense for his own gain. >> carrie, we heard you expect more tomorrow when hillary clinton delivers a speech on foreign policy. >> absolutely. the will make a major address on foreign policy. she's performing much much better when you ask voters who is better at handling foreign policy. she has almost a 30 point advantage over donald trump on that question. about a 10 point advantage when voters are asked who would be a better commander-in-chief. we expect her to echo a lot of previous criticisms of donald trump for being uninformed or dangerous on foreign policy that will underscore her own experience as secretary of state and give her the advantage of a very busy news cycle of donald trump making quite a bit of news every day. >> we have a lot more to come this afternoon. we'll bring you donald trump's perspective coming up and

it has been quite a week for donald trump, taking on repor r reporters yesterday in a fiery news conference and documents released about the case invol involving trump university. let's check in now with katy tur who covered the trump campaign from the very beginning. give us a perspective from trump world today, katkaty, how are t taking these attacks from hillary clinton? >> reporter: they're not resp d responding right now from attack business of hillary clinton but we reached out to lawyers in this trump university case to find out a number of things, why he's gone on attack against the federal judge in this lawsuit and what their response is to this new release, document dump of trump university's playbooks. they directed us to a youtube
12:21 pm
video released by the donald trump campaign of a number of testimonials from folks who said they went to trump university and said it helped them immen immensely. remember, this class action lawsuit has been going on for some time now. a about 8,000 plaintiffs suing donald trump for fraud saying what they paid for was not just seminars but real life advice how to go about and make it in the real estate business, advice that would continue after these seminars from teachers that donald trump himself hand-pi hand-picked. they're saying donald trump misrepresented that, that he didn't actually hand-pick his instructors and donald trump admitted that in his own sworn deposition. they're saying they were sold essentially a bill of goods that was not followed through with. this lawsuit is going on and continuing to nag the trump campaign, giving a lot of firepower right now, as you heard a few minutes ago with
12:22 pm
carrie dann to hillary clinton, she now using the term "fraud," calling donald trump a fraud for the first time on the campaign trail trying to paint the way he's selling the american public as the same way he sold students on trump university, saying it is one big facade, all a bump of smoke and mirrors -- a bunch of smoke and mirrors, not necess y necessarily promises donald trump will be able to follow through on. the campaign will be here in sacramento tonight. we are expecting him to talk about this. he's been on a tear against the judge for quite some time in san diego on friday. he called the judge a mexican, said, that's fine, but then went on to say he was a disgrace. unclear why he brought the judge's ethnicity into this. the judge was born in indiana. when he was asked about this yesterday at his press conference at the trump tower he seemed to dodge it and not say
12:23 pm
why he thought the judge's ethnicity was relevant in particular circumstance. >> before you , can i ask you about a smaller story that hit the radar this te trump tower in new york and the use of the building space for political events. what's the story there? >> reporter: the department of building in new york city is looking into the times that donald trump has closed down the atrium of his building for large scale press events. this has happened a number of times since donald trump has hit the campaign trail for his victory speeches, he'll often have them inside the donald trump tower atrium. that atrium is public property. it is supposed to be open to the public. the city is looking into whether donald trump is breaking his deal he made with the city early on when they gave him permits to build trump tower. >> katy, thank you very much. i want to bring in chief correspondent ari melber. talk about these claims katy was
12:24 pm
talking about trump university found in these newly unsealed court documents you've been p r pouring over. we should note this claim is from trump university students have claimed they were defrauded. what more have you learned? >> this is pretty standard, you have declarations going in both directions going in a case. this is no usual case, a lot of extra interest. from the plaintiff's side, consumers who say they were defrauded, they have former trump university officials who say i believe trump u was a fraudulent scheme that it preyed upon the lirld and uneducated to separate them from their money. you were discussing donald trump's deposition in this and there was a question of hand-picking of speakers one of the claims and one of the people
12:25 pm
that worked for trump u, mr. sexton was asked about this and he says on the screen, none of our instructors at the live events were actually hand-picked by donald trump. they asked mr. trump, do you have any basis to dispute that testimony? he says, no, that's correct. another quick highlight from trump in his deposition when they ask is one of these people a mentor or instructor, you don't know? the answer is, i don't know. the question from the lawyer representing these customers as i mentioned, so do you know any of the mentors that worked for trump u? mr. trump says, no,dow don't, that was up to mr. sexton. this is a little dry but you dig through the documents it does reveal more than donald trump otherwise might have wanted because it shows a controversy here. there are people and we put them up on the screen the trump folks found working there or happy
12:26 pm
customers who say, of course, they knew donald trump wasn't hand-picking everyone and wanted to be a part of his brand and secrets and felt they got that. the case won't be decided until after the election in november. >> i was just going to ask. status of the case. after election day. thanks so much. never trump activist, kristol is courting david french. never heard of him? most people haven't. a conservative national review writer and conservative of operation freedom. french is interested but hasn't committed to running yet including his own wife. looks like romney might be interested in a french run tw t tweeting i know david french to be an honorable intelligent and patriotic person. i look forward to what he has to say. for more, we turn to megan of bloomberg politician, bloomberg
12:27 pm
the first to report it may be david french. i have to be honest it came up after my show yesterday and we went to our computers to see wo we were talking about. >> i don't think you were the only one? >> when there's donald trump and his persona, how does somebody like david french to come up? >> let's be honest there is no pathway for david french? he has no campaign infrastructure, hasn't said he will do it. doesn't have money or establi established advisors around him. what this does show is the desperation level of the never trump camp. we have been teasing who they would come forward with, we thought it would be someone with big name or big money behind him. this person is neither. it doesn't say it hasn't generated interest and dominated the news cycle but isn't really
12:28 pm
a plausible candidate. >> is there a plausible candidate that never trump might find next or is this the guy -- are they putting their eggs in that basket. >> no question if you saw a mitt romney or colin powell or names bantied about, that's a different story. we have to be realistic. donald trump is a popular candidate among a large section among particularly of the base of people he attracted to the party. there is a story he hasn't always attracted new voters he is turning huge numbers of people out in primaries that traditionally didn't and a big sign. if he can draw more people into the republican party that's a game changer. the polls are tight and a lot of people find them surprisingly tight. this mist that trump is somehow a weak candidate is just that a mist and never trump has to get used to that. they're running a big risk here the longer you run this type of scorched campaign the more damage you do in the long run. >> the longer you talk about a

potential independent candidate like trump was saying over the weekend writing about bill kristol if he gets a spoiler to run as independent say good-bye to the supreme court. it might draw a few votes away from donald trump making it possible for hillary clinton to get to the white house. >> these are huge stakes. supreme court with possibility of three seats. the gnat possibly in play. -- the senate possibly in play. these are big stakes politics now. if you have an independent that will peel votes away from trump or hillary clinton you possibly do open that doorway up to solidify a third term of a democratic president with real supreme court seats at stake. >> had we not had the breaking news in los angeles we would have been talking to gary johnson, the libertarian candidate. i will ask you what i would have asked him. does he have the same chance
12:30 pm
with running for a third party run? >> with french at least getting on the ballot. with johnson this is a name and libertarian movement has gained steam and you have senators. and this isn't a person in this cycle that has a plausible chance moving forward. >> donald trump said world leaders being rattled was a good thing. my colleague, chris hayes, just wrapped up an exclusive interview with secretary of state john kerry and asked about the rattled world leaders. >> the president used the word "rattled" when he talked about world leaders with respect to donald trump. trump responded by saying it's good. it's good they're rattled. >> we're not doing a trump hotel business deal. these are dealings between nations, based on precedent, based on understandings, based

alto, california, where bernie sanders makes his first stop of the day. latest polls shows he's down 13 points with just six days before the primary. chris jansing is with the campaign. daunting math for sanders? what's the mood for his campaign? >> reporter: you would not know it based on conversations i've been having with them. they are taking some heart in the fact hillary clinton has canceled events in new jersey and coming here later in the week, something she wasn't going to do. they say that means her internal polls must show the race much closer and believe a goal they set a minimum of 200,000 people coming to see him over the course of the last several weeks not only will be hit but exceeded. having said that, they're making this big push, bernie sanders is talking about it, his wife is talking about it, trying to tell people, this is not going to be decided on tuesday night in
12:49 pm
spite of the fact hillary clinton may indeed reach and expected to reach the number of delegates she needs. it is true, one part of the argument is true no one is officially the nominee until you go to the convention. but the math, as you pointed out, kate, is definitely not in their favor. the problem obviously for them in making that argument is that people -- they're concerned people will not turn out to vote if they don't think that what bernie sanders is telling them is true, he still has a chance in this, there's a good chance many of these people, especially young people, will stay home. so far as we have seen, there's still a lot of enthusiasm here. i just spoke to jef weaver, who is the campaign manager. he said over this past weekend, 100,000 doors were knocked on, they had people manning phone banks. as you've seen over the course of the last several weeks, people are still coming out as many as 10,000 for a single event. today, he's doing four events.
12:50 pm
i'm telling you, he is going all in, in these last seven or eight days. right now inside, he's about to start a community start a community panel. he did a news conference earlier today on fracking and then he'll be outdoors in palo alto. and then there's a fourth event later tonight and that's what his schedule looks like for the foreseeable future. so whatever the math says, whatever the arguments against him are, he's not willing to give up and neither are most die-hard supporters, kate. >> chris jansing, thanks so much. good to see you. coming up, as speculation continues to grow over who hillary clinton may choose as her running mate, jacob soboroff catches up with one of the leading rumored contenders. not quite. sometimes those seats are out of reach, costing an outrageous number of miles. it's time to switch... to the capital one venture card.

hillary clinton hasn't locked up the democratic nomination just yet, but there's already talk about who she could pick as a running mate. one of the names being tossed

around in california is congressman javier becerra. jacob soboroff spoke with the congressman about being the potential vp pick. >> javier becerra is on that list to be one of hillary clinton's vice presidential picks. but before he can do that, if he is tapped to be vice president, he has to help secretary clinton win the california primary and the other june 7th primaries that we'll be seeing next tuesday. of course, he is focusing on his latino district in southern california. one of the big challenges for him is convincing young latino voters who are siding more with bernie sanders than hillary clinton at this point. one of those voters was right in front of us yesterday when we went to lunch. check it out. >> i'll take the sampler. >> what sampler? >> the mole. >> just saying. >> possibly next vice president of the united states here today. >> you didn't deny it by the

[ speaking spanish ] >> what year were you born? >> '95. >> is that part of the problem? some of these folks are too young? >> not so much a problem, it's a reality. we went through some tough times in the '90s. why bernie and not secretary clinton? >> when i hear bernie speak in person, he's inspired a lot of motivation, energy, his ideas are really good, especially for young people. just with hillary, i just feel

that some of of the things in the past, some of the things she said didn't resonate with me particularly. i know it might have resonated with you, but for who's looking out for me, i'm going with bernie sanders. >> if you want a friend in washington, this man could be the next vice president of the united states. >> so you see there, congressman becerra was not able to convince jasmine to come over and support hillary clinton instead of bernie sanders. that's something i would imagine the campaign is looking closely at, because vice presidential picks like elizabeth warren and even bernie sanders have talked about them bringing over a younger base, which could be crucial to beating donald trump in that election. becerra is one of the highest ranked latino officials in washington, d.c. he has years of experience in the house and the clinton campaign is looking closely at that as they weigh their options. >> interesting to watch him make the sell. thanks so much. that does it for me this hour. i'll see you back here tomorrow
