tv   Way Too Early  MSNBC  June 3, 2016 2:30am-3:01am PDT

2:30 am
no risk to people's lives if you blow up a golf course deal, but it doesn't work like that in world affairs. >> i watched hillary today, it was pathetic. it was pathetic. it was so sad to watch. >> hillary clinton uses a speech on foreign policy to try and take down her republican opponent. but trump being trump of course came back swinging. it is 5:30 here on the east coast, 2:30 out west. this is "way too early." good morning, everyone. it is friday, june 3rd. i'm alex witt. fast moving floodwaters in texas have left five soldiers dead and emergency crews in a desperate search for four others still missing. it happened in ft. hood, texas,
2:31 am
about 70 miles north of austin. according to the army, the soldiers military vehicle overturned during a training exercise. 12 soldiers were in the vehicle at the time. at least three soldiers were rescued from the water and taken to the hospital. five were killed and the search continues for the four other remaining soldiers. tyler broadway, a spokesman for ft. hood tells nbc news that intense storms weren't a consideration when deciding whether to cancel the training exercise. quote, it never rains in the army. it rains on the army he said. we have people training in all weather. ft. hood's commanding general posted a statement saying in part, we are deeply saddened by the loss of several troopers and continue search operations. your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated during this difficult time. authorities are investigating two military plain crashes that took place yesterday in unrelated ijss departments. in tennessee, a pilot with the navy's elite blue angels was killed when the squadron was practicing for a weekend show.
2:32 am
the moments just after the crash, it happened shortly after the pilot had taken off. two miles from the runway. >> i see a fireball. and black smoke everywhere. i look up and i'm looking for the parachute. because it just happened. the parachute would be way up in the air, i didn't see one. that was just -- you know, the way the blue angels kept circling it was just very sad. >> and a second military crash took place in colorado springs. the pilot of the air force thunderbird jet was able to safely eject just moments before impact. nbc's miguel almaguer has details. >> dismissed. >> reporter: the thunderbirds had soared over the air force academy's graduation. president obama watching as the cadets tossed their caps. but then one of the six jets goes down. dropping out of the clear blue sky in colorado springs. >> numerous callers reporting
2:33 am
the aircraft is down, pilot ejected. >> reporter: the highly trained pilot in the f 16 fighting falcon safely ejecting. his plane appearing largely intact. spotted in the open field. no serious injuries. before heading back to air force one, the president stopped to meet with the pilot. thanking him for his service and first responders for rushing to the scene. >> that was miguel almaguer reporting there. let's turn to the other big story, last night's donald trump's event got violent as anti-trump protesters clashed with supporters there as the rally was still going on. protesters cornered a woman who remained smiling as protesters screamed in her face. then an ugly scene as the protesters began pelting her with food and eggs. the woman rarely flinched. even as she's hit square in the jaw. she was led into the hotel. multiple trump supporters were witnessing and being mobbed and attacked there. in another instance a protester
2:34 am
knocked the hat off a trump supporter's head and kicked it away as he shouted curses. other demonstrators attempted to take the hat and burn it. one officer was assaulted and they made a few arrests last night. the clinton campaign responded as well last night. chairman podesta writing, violence has no place in this election. we're going to get to what trump actually said in a second. but first, hillary clinton's national security speech where she increased the torque on trump. she touted working with allies and she mocked his foreign policy ideas one after another. >> i believe in strong alliances, clarity in dealing with our rivals. a rock solid commitment to the values that have always made america great. donald trump's ideas aren't just different, they are dangerously
2:35 am
incoherent. they're not really ideas. just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies. he is not just unprepared. he is temperamentally unfit. this is not someone who should ever have the nuclear codes, because it's not hard to imagine donald trump leading us into the war just because somebody got under his very thin skin. >> clinton tried to draw the clearest contrast by focus on the single room in the white house. >> i remember being in the situation room. with president obama, debating the potential bin laden operation. the president's advisers were divided and the risks of failure were daunting. it was a decision only a president could make. and when he did, it was as crisp
2:36 am
and courageous a display of leadership as i have ever seen. now imagine donald trump sitting in the situation room, making life or death decisions on behalf of the united states. imagine him deciding whether to send your spouses or children into battle. imagine if he had not just his twitter account at his disposal when he's angry, but america's entire arsenal. >> donald trump responded in kind, telling "the wall street journal" quote, it wasn't a foreign policy speech. it was a hate speech. she can't talk about foreign policy because she's made so many mistakes. at his rally in san jose he claimed the remarks were motivated by the controversy over her e-mail server. >> i watched military today. it was pathetic. it was pathetic. she's up there and supposed to be a foreign policy speech. it was a political speech. had nothing to do with foreign policy.
2:37 am
she made a political speech tonight, folks, and it was a bre pretty pathetic deal. if you look at her today, she does not look presidential. anything obama wants she's going forward with because you know why? because she doesn't want to go to jail. remember hillary clinton used to hate obama. she used to hate him! bill clinton hated him. bill clinton hated him. he called bill clinton a racist, do you remember that? bill clinton hated him. and hillary clinton hated obama. now it's yes, sir, mr. president, sir. yes, sir. what would you like? what would you like me to say here, sir? the only reason she's behaving like this and the only reason she's been dragged so far left, believe me, is she doesn't want to go to jail over the e-mails. okay?
2:38 am
believe me. 29 days after donald trump was declared the presumptive republican nominee, he finally secured the vote of the party's top member in congress. house speaker paul ryan revealed his endorsement in an op-ed yesterday, citing trump's commitment to the house republicans' policy agenda. i feel confident he would help us turn the ideas of the agenda into laws to help improve people's lives. that's why i'll be voting for him this fall. ryan later told the associated press he and trump just needed to talk things out. >> i didn't know the guy at all. before he got the nomination. quite frankly i didn't expect the nomination to be clinched until june 7th at the earliest. so i never had the time to put the time into talking with donald about just the country, about principles and policies. trump made no mention of speaker ryan at his rally last night, tweeting earlier in the
2:39 am
day, so great to have the endorsement and support of paul ryan. we'll be working hard to make america great again. donald trump is not backing down from his attacks on the judge overseeing the fraud lawsuit over the new shuttered trump university. indiana born judge curiel's quote mexican heritage presents a problem and his pledge to build the wall along the border of mexico and he may file a complaint against the obama appointee who unsealed the playbook against the university. some employees were told to play on the emotions and suggesting they heavily rely on credit card debt or retirement funds to pay for the classes. despite the legal battle, trump took to twitter yesterday vowing to reopen the school if he wins the case. some of trump's former students have said publicly they were pleased with the courses. we're learning some new details surrounding the deadly shooting on ucla's campus this
2:40 am
week. police believe the shooter identified as mainak sarkar came on campus to kill klug. they found a note described as a kill list, on its, klug, and another ucla professor and a woman in minnesota. she has been identified as ashley hasti. she was found dead of a gunshot wound. she was identified by a relative as sarkar's estranged wife. let's turn to business where the chairman of tribune publishing which owns "the l.a. times" and "the chicago tribune" has rebranded the company to ward off takeover by gannett. louisa bojesen has more. so this set off quite the furor on twitter yesterday. >> everyone is making fun of the name, tronc, tribune online.
2:41 am
you can see the funny comments being made. and staff was told, don't worry, we're not rebranding the name of the "chicago tribune" to the chicago tronc. but it's an attempt to fend off the bid being made for "the tribune" company which of course owns "the chicago tribune" and other newspapers as well. it's thought they may back off at some point because they need the shareholders on board. we have to wait and see what happens there. the u.s. is also proposing new rules for pay day loan industry. this is a very -- a high interest, low dollar loan industry. up until now it's been -- it's been up to the individual state to decide how they want to regulate this particular environment. the u.s. government now, they're proposing that the regulations should be coming from them. lenders they have to verify the income of the people taking out the loans to make sure that they can repay the money that they're borrowing. to give you an example, if you have somebody trying to take t

out -- trying to take out $375, then on average they're going to be paying back $520 in fees. so it is a really, really, very volatile industry they're now trying to come to terms with. when looking ahead today in three hours' today we have the nonfarm payroll data. watch your screens for this one. we are anticipating around 158 to 164,000 jobs were created for the month. 0.2% rise in wages is what you should be looking for. and no change to the actual unemployment level which should stay steady at 5%. but it's important because it comes of course before janet yellin the head of the federal reserve she speaks on monday and that's the last time that she has -- the last chance she has to communicate before the actual next fed meeting. you have the blackout period
2:43 am
before the fed meeting that takes place on june the 14th and 15th. so do be sure to check out the nonfarm payroll data in three hours. >> will do. thank you, so much, louisa bojesen from london. up next, game 1 of the nba finals and explain what got warriors head coach steve kerr so frustrated that he destroyed his clipboard. and this -- get out, get out! get out! >> do not underestimate the power of water. >> wow. dramatic scene in texas as the rain just keeps on coming. we'll show you what happened moments before that truck got swept right into the floodwaters. those stories and more when "way too early" comes right back. body pain?
