that there are questions about whether he encourages such. so i think it is incumbent upon the clinton campaign to come out strongly and criticize this kind of thing. >> cleveland this summer, that convention, we will see what the preparations are like. san jose didn't seem ready for that last night. thank you both for joining us. up next, the very latest in the search for those missing soldiers from ft. hood in texas. i'm steve kornacki. craig melvin picks things up right now. good friday to you. we start with breaking news. the death toll in ft. hood, texas, is climbing this morning after a flash flood swept away a military vehicle there. five soldiers are dead. a frantic search is going on right now for four other soldiers who are still missing. three soldiers were rescued. they were taken to an area hospital. they are in stable condition right now. a ft. hood official spoke just a few moments ago.

>> we suffered a tragic accident where we lost five of our soldiers. due to the quick action of some other soldiers that were training, we were able to rescue three soldiers who are in stable condition at carl r. darnell army medical center and will potentially be released later today. >> let's get right to ft. hood and nbc's charles hadlock. let's start with these missing soldiers. what more ask you tell us about the search effort under way there? >> reporter: yeah, craig, the search effort has been going on the last 20 hours or so since this accident happened late yesterday morning. a fresh set of eyes is going under the river today. the creek that was swollen with food wate floodwaters. apparently the men were in a light armored military vehicle. they went through a low water crossing and that's when tragedy struck.

the vehicle was swept off the road. three people were initially found dead. they found two more last night. in fact someone has placed a memorial here. five candles for the dead, four for the missing. now, there are three people who were rescued yesterday. they are across the street here at darnell medical center here at ft. hood. ft. hood is a vast military installation, one of the largest in the world. more than 270,000 acres of land here, a lot of it rugged, and that's where it happened. owl creek came out of its banks as this training mission was under way. their vehicle was swept away perhaps as far away as lake belton, which is a vast lake here in central texas. so the search is under way. they're not going to give up until they find all the soldiers here. and the commanding general here, the deputy commanding general offered his words of condolences to the families. here's what he had to say. >> our priority has been since

the first report of this incident and continues to be the search for our four missing teammates. i'd also like to thank the community for their outpouring of support. their thoughts and prayers. they will be needed in the tough days ahead. >> so the search continues here at ft. hood and one of the most disastrous fatalities here on the fort that anyone can remember in quite some time. craig, back to you. >> charles, thank you. let's bring in nbc meteorologist bill karins now. we're talking about ft. hood here, but this entire region has just been pummeled for some time now. any relief in sight? >> not today. we're dealing with life-threatening weather now. by the time sunday rolls around, it will be a little better. this storm lingers over the region. thunderstorms overnight were over the gulf but unfortunately they have been moving inland.

heavy rains are on i-10 from houston into the port arthur area and lake charles. this is where the intense rainfall is currently and where the greatest flash flooding threat is. storms near victoria are popping up and we'll have to watch that because the river there is very high. we do have a new flash flood warning that's in. this goes until 11:30 central time and includes the port arthur area but does not include houston. we have flash flood watches up for 23 million people and there's that triangle area. right in here has been the worst of it. tonight we expect heavier rain to shift into areas of louisiana. as far as the next three days go, dallas only a quarter of an inch. san antonio maybe a half inch to another inch. the heavier rains will focus along houston and southeast texas coast and into areas of louisiana. so we have to get through today. tomorrow will be a little better and by sunday we give everyone

in texas the all clear. >> we'll check back in with you in just a few minutes. chaos and name calling once again driving the day in san jose. protests outside a donald trump rally turned violent when protesters confronted trump supporters as they left that event. they tauntinged them, burned merchandise, even attacked one woman with an egg. a handful of those folks were arrested. at one point protesters we're told burned an american flag. it's the kind of violence we haven't seen since the late '60s but this year we're seeing the same unrest play out all over this country from chicago to albuquerque, new mexico, to anaheim to costa mesa. trump tweeting this morning about the chaos, blaming a small group of thugs inside the rally. trump saying that there was tremendous love and enthusiasm. but not for hillary clinton, who he repeatedly slammed for everything from her relationship

with the president to the scandal involving her e-mails. >> hillary clinton is missing 30,000 e-mails. they have been deleted. 30,000. i will say this, hillary clinton has to go to jail, okay? she has to go to jail. has to go. >> trump went on to say that much of last night's speech was actually counter punching a response to clinton's address earlier in the day. that speech was supposed to focus on foreign policy but it was more of an all-out assault on donald trump and his vision for america. and it was -- it was at much about his personality as it was about his policies. >> donald trump's ideas aren't just different, they are dangerously incoherent. they're not even really ideas, just a series of bizarre rants, personal fueds and outright lies.

he is temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires knowledge, stability and immense responsibility. >> i watched hillary's thing today, which was hard. it's like taking sominex. i think she could make more money if she made speeches and sold them for people that can't sleep. >> the best political team in the business back at work this morning. hallie jackson is in san jose, kristen welker is in los angeles, luke russert is back in washington with the big news about that endorsement that trump picked up from the speaker of the house. let's start with you, hallie. one of the things that struck me last night and i watched this play out in primetime, that chaos that happened outside last night's rally. where were the police? and why were they not more actively involved in trying to stop some of that mayhem? >> reporter: the police were there, craig.

you saw them dressed in riot gear. that is something that we see at basically every trump rally, particularly the ones that happen in the evening. i saw some of your tweets last night as the coverage was happening. they were incredibly restrained is one word for it as some of these engagements and altercations were happening. for example the one that you're watching right now, the woman who got hit in the face, hit in the body by eggs. people were throwing food and bottles at her. police did not step in at that point. what you saw as the crowd began to build and as night began to fall were police taking more of an active role in trying to disperse the crowds, finally declaring the unlawful assembly, finally beginning to try to get these crowds out of the streets and out of downtown and things did settle down around 10:30, 11:00 at night. you talked about albuquerque, then you saw trump supporters very specifically diverted away from where the protests were happening to the point that

people had to take a very circuitous route to get back to their cars in the parking garage. that did not happen this time. you saw intermingling as people left and what happened happened. so we talk about the chaos, we talk about the protests. we also talk about what happened inside that room. you played some of the sound bites of donald trump going after hillary clinton. he did so with this new nickname. he's called her crooked hillary for a while. now he's added something to it, lyin' crooked hillary. here's what he had to say about that and one of his former rivals. >> ted cruz is no longer a liar. we don't say lyin' ted anymore. we don't want to say lyin' ted. i'd love to pull it out and use it on lyin' crooked hillary. >> reporter: not sure how ted cruz feels about that one, craig, but we will work to find out. back to you. >> i assume that means he's

going to give ted cruz a new nickname. kristen welker again in los angeles covering the clinton campaign. kristen, we heard a little bit of hillary's speech there, one that the campaign had apparently working on for weeks. she really went after donald trump yesterday. what are you hearing from folks inside the campaign about how they plan to build on yesterday moving forward? >> well, i think you're going to hear some of her greatest hits from yesterday on the campaign trail today. she has four events here in the los angeles area. and in the coming days and weeks, craig, what we saw yesterday was really a preview of the likely fall fight. it was significant. it was a 35-minute takedown essentially of donald trump and his foreign policy. and it was the speech that democrats have been waiting to hear from secretary clinton. so she was speaking to democrats but also speaking to independents and moderate republicans. she picked apart his foreign policy, craig, point by point. the fact that he hasn't

enumerated a plan to fight isis. the fact that he says it would be okay if south korea and japan got nuclear weapons, his proposed muslim ban. what was interesting is that it was a broader attack on his temperament. take a listen. >> this is not someone who should ever have the nuclear codes because it's not hard to imagine donald trump leading us into a war just because somebody got under his very thin skin. he says he doesn't have to listen to our generals or admirals, our ambassadors and other high officials because he has, quote, a very good brain. he also said i know more about isis than the generals do. believe me. you know what? i don't believe him. >> now, of course secretary clinton still trying to win her

own party's primary so that's why she's going to be crisscrossing the state here in california today. senator sanders making an aggressive push here as well. clinton can win the nomination without winning california, but if she wins this state, it would make it very difficult for senator sanders to stay in this race through the convention. >> i'm going to talk about that with jeff weaver this afternoon. kristen welker, thank you as always. let's get to luke russert standing by for us on capitol hill. we heard yesterday that the speaker has finally come around. he is endorsing donald trump. it was odd to me that word of this endorsement comes out as hillary clinton gives her speech there and when called on that, oh, we don't really follow her schedule. we had no idea. that seems odd, luke. >> reporter: yeah, how about that, craig. the op-ed given to his hometown newspaper with a 3:00 embargo that just happens to come right in the middle of hillary clinton's foreign policy speech. so this story naturally is, i think, redirecting some of the

attention that would have gone to that speech but obviously it was the "a" block story up here. after 29 days on the sideline, house speaker paul ryan is the last congressional republican leader to come forward and endorse donald trump. he said that the reason he was able to do so was that he finally got comfortable. take a listen to what the speaker said. let's play the tape. >> i never had the time to put the time in to talking with donald about just the country, about principles and policies. i just wanted to have a good comfort level that these policies, these principles and policies are something that we would be able to work with him on. and it took some time just to have those conversations. >> reporter: now, craig, this was not an easy endorsement for paul ryan to make because he does have a lot of policy differences with donald trump, specifically about entitlement reform, about free trade policy. he's also been very concerned about some of the rhetoric

that's come out of dluonald tru, the muslim ban, calling those coming across the rapists, disavowing the kkk and david duke, the violence at his rallies that he instigated early in the year. ryan made the judgment after long meetings with his staff and donald trump's staff that the trump team is appreciative of the house gop policy. they're larging their agenda project today called a better way and they believe that donald trump is more likely to enact their policy than would a, quote, unquote, liberal crony like hillary clinton. so ryan is essentially here making the decision to go in with trump. i don't want to be the last person left alone on this island and perhaps he will put forward my agenda. the rollout is next week. the two issues, poverty and national security. we'll see if donald trump talks poverty on the campaign trail next week. who knows, craig. >> and with that, it appears mr. trump's takeover of the gop is

>> reporter: police say mainak sarkar had two guns, loads of ammo and tactical gear. a note he left at the scene led police back to his home in st. paul. there they found what is described as a kill list naming bill klug, ashley hasti, a woman sarkar married in 2011 and a second ucla professor. that professor, allen gar finkle remembered sarkar. >> there were problems but it kaent that unusual and we thought we were done with it. if you had asked me about this two days ago i would have said the guy is gone and it's happily resolved. >> reporter: police looking into a blog posted by sarkar that said he had personal differences with professor klug and he cleverly stole all my code and gave it to another student. charlie beck saying ucla has dismissed those claims. >> this is a making of his own imagination. >> reporter: ashley hasti's

let's get you updated on breaking news in ft. hood, texas, where the search continues for four missing soldiers. their military vehicle was swept up in those fast-moving floodwaters yesterday during a training exercise. five soldiers were killed. three soldiers, they were hurt and taken to an area hospital. those three soldiers we're told at last check were in stable condition. they could be, could be released from the hospital later today. not just ft. hood that's dealing with flooding right now in texas. 200 miles to the southeast of ft. hood there's a community called ridchmond. it's in the greater houston area. residents there also suffering from rising waters. beth wolf is the public information officer for ft. bend county, texas, where richmond is. beth, how extensive is the flooding that you're seeing there? >> we are seeing flooding levels higher than we've seen in many of our life times all along the

brazos river which divides ft. bend county down the middle all the way from simonton and to richmond and now we do believe that the river has crested in richmond and is coming down, but the big load of water is now moving downstream from there and we're watching areas around thompson and watching the river gauge down at rose sharon. >> as we have our conversation here, we are showing our viewers at home some of the scenes from ft. bend county, texas, and it's gut wrenching. you see these houses that literally have water nearly up to the roofs. we've seen a number of rescues happening there the last few days. how many people would you say have been impacted by the flooding roughly? >> at this time we're estimating about 1400 homes have been affected. we don't have a good assessment

of damages at this point because we can't get in. the water is lingering in the flooded areas so we can't make those kinds of estimations, but at this point we've rescued over 740 people. texas task force one is helping us do that, do water rescues. >> i know that you guys instructed a lot of folks to basically get out if they could. does it seem that people heeded those warnings at this point? >> well, many did. many did heed the warnings, but i believe that a lot of people don't believe it. i think. i think they didn't expect it to be this high so some of these rescues are related to people waiting just a little too long. >> what resources are available at this point for folks there who have been affected by the flooding? >> well, we have the ft. bend county office of emergency

that we are seeing in texas. bill, we've had this conversation a number of times. it doesn't always take a lot of water to cause a lot of problems, right? >> not at all. we've got the standing water in 1400 homes so think about the mold damage and what's going to be left. and then we have pictures of the fast-moving water and how it can move vehicles. first let me update you on the life-threatening along the louisiana-texas border. this is where heavy rain and thunderstorms have set up. we do have a couple of new flash flood warnings. we were focusing on the beaumont/port arthur area and now we're moved over to louisiana. the lake charles area is under a flash flood warning that goes until 12:30 central time. and then over here we are watching the beaumont/port arthur area and that goes until 11:30. as far as water goes and how it affects and moves things around, it doesn't -- you think it takes a lot. you see so many people crossing

through rivers and streams. it's slightly ridiculous as you see fast-moving water that hits a vehicle and turns it. let me give you a couple of examples of what we've been dealing with. as far as the depths are going to go, it only takes about 6 inches of water to go and get a vehicle -- excuse me, a human to be knocked off their feet. vehicles, it's a little different, it takes a little bit more than that and that's what we've been watching. as far as the movement of the water goes with the vehicle, we've seen things up to two feet of water that's taken an average size vehicle and literally sweep it away. that was the case yesterday. you saw that amazing video of that pickup truck that went across that river, and that was just example 1a of what you're really not supposed to do when you have these rivers and streams go by. here's the animation and here's what they tell you from noaa. 6 inches of moving water with knock a person over. as far as a car and vehicle, they say two feet of water. my rule is thumb is if you can't actually see the pavement

she seemed a little bit uncomfortable doing it so we'll have to see what happens. remember, she is playing on someone else's turf when she goes there so we'll have to see. i do think donald trump had a point. the speech was more about the political framing of foreign policy than the foreign policy itself. >> well, yes, but it was also interesting to me that we did not see and so far have not heard a point-by-point rebuttal from the presumptive republican nominee donald trump either. he hasn't come out with a foreign policy rebuttal, has he? >> no, i think you're absolutely right. i wouldn't expect to see one any time in the near future either because i don't think donald trump wants this campaign to be about specific issues. i think he wants it to be about personality. i think he wants it to be about name calling. i think in that game, he is going to have the advantage, which is why i understand what clinton is trying to do here by pivoting and trying to talk about policy, but by mixing it up in the way she did. i do think that she opens

herself up a little bit. >> while she was speaking, again, word that paul ryan was set to endorse, if you want to call it that, he did not use the words "endorse." but did he have much of a choice, lanhee? >> i think at the end of the day paul ryan's biggest concerns were trying to maintain some element of party unity, trying to make sure that the house can be retained for the republican party. so it's not so much whether he had a choice or not, it was at what point did paul ryan feel comfortable saying he was going to support trump. he had the private assurances that he needed to do so, but it did catch a lot of people by surprise, including me. >> do you buy the fact that his people and trump's people huddled together in a room and managed to iron their their differences over substantive policy matters? are you buying that? >> i think it's sincere. i think they did talk about those things. i think most likely what happened, craig, is that donald trump said, look, paul ryan,

policy is your thing. i'm going to let you handle policy. and frankly, that would not be the worst thing in the world for republicans and for conservatives for donald trump to say, look, this is not my bailiwick, paul ryan, you handle it. >> but so many of ryan's policies, so many of his policies and the policies of the gop at least heretofore are in contrast to donald trump's policies. >> certainly on issues like immigration and trade where paul ryan acknowledged that we don't see eye to eye on these issues. >> and social security, and raising the minimum wage. >> for a lot of republicans. i do think that one issue that i wish that paul ryan would have gotten more public assurances from donald trump on is entitlement reform. that's one of the core elements for the ryan agenda is to not have donald trump saying we need some form of medicare and social security is sddisappointing. >> paul ryan fell in line

yesterday. will your boss do the same? will we expect a half-hearted endorsement from mitt romney? >> i wouldn't expect that any time soon. i think governor romney has been very clear where he stands on donald trump. i wouldn't expect him to change his mind any time soon. >> the implication is donald trump is not a man of high character, lahnee. >> you can draw whatever conclusion you want but he is a character in politics unlike any we have seen so far. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, andrea mitchell's guest, noon eastern only on msnbc. after building a campaign on promises of building a wall and banning certain religious groups from entering the country, donald trump continuing to struggle with minority voters. can the republican presumptive nominee make a last-minute appeal to win them over? we'll talk about that. whoa whoa, i got this. just gotta get the check.

while speaker ryan just endorsed donald trump after several weeks, the presumptive gop nominee continues to struggle with a large voter group, may noerinorities. joining me to talk about that, jay newton small and former chairman of the national hispanic committee, danny vaurg gas as well. this "new york times" reporting, the head of the hispanic relations resigning due to discomfort about having to help donald trump get elected. danny, what do you make of that? >> i've known ruth for quite a while. she's a very talented and principled person. i think she went off to a really great job at the american action network but i don't doubt that she had issues with this particular nominee. i think she left in part because of those principled beliefs that she couldn't support this particular nominee. >> her replacement, helen ferre,

former advisor to jeb bush, she's been quite critical of donald trump in the past, to say the least. this is what she had to say about him back in february to her nbc affiliate back in miami. this is what she said. >> donald trump, who for all practical purposes, isn't a real republican, she's not voted in a republican primary since the 1980s. you see this change and this anger that's translating into a protest vote and that vote is translating to someone who is harsh and coarse in vocabulary and language. >> okay. so that's february to our affiliate in miami. here's the statement that was released this week from her. quote, she is proud to be joining the rnc during such a critical time and is eager to make the case to the hispanic community. what can we make of the change of heart, jay? >> well, donald trump puts a lot

of latino americans into really tough positions here trying to figure out their loyalty to their party, their desire to want to build the republican party, and the leader now, the de facto leader of the party, which is donald trump in somebody who has clearly made statements that is very unpopular with a lot of latino voters. and so this is a challenge for them and i think you see the disparity in her remarks from february till now. you see it in polling of latino americans and you see it certainly this week with donald trump taking on the judge in california, who's presiding over his case and trump university, saying that he's clearly biased against donald trump because he's a mexican. >> which he's not, by the way. we've spent the better part of this week trying to correct that, that the judge is from somewhere in the midwest. it seems as if sometimes, danny, that it's lip service that comes

from the rnc, that comes from the trump campaign as well. you know, you're very familiar i'm sure with the autopsy report that was conducted after mitt romney's loss. one of the things from that autopsy report, they said, quote, if hispanic americans hear that the gop doesn't want them in the united states, they won't pay attention to our next sentence. immigration has become a litmus test measuring whether we are meeting them with a welcome mat or a closed door. danny, what happened -- what happened to the autopsy report? >> look, i'll tell you, craig. i've been a republican over 30 years and this is a very challenging time for the party. as someone who's been trying to open the door of the republican party to the hispanic community across the country, i'm very disturbed by where we are right now. look, we've got a nominee who's got a problem with both style as well as substance. stylewise, he's bombastic, he's confrontational, which is not a great combination for commander in chief and leader of the free world. from a substance perspective, it's disturbing the fact that he

knows so little about national security and foreign policy and his knowledge of civics, he probably couldn't pass a seventh grade civics test. but at the end of the day we need to do a better job of engaging with the hispanic community. the next president of the united states will have to garner at least 40% of the hispanic vote in order to win. there are so many states right now that have a large and growing hispanic population that whoever the next president of the united states is, is going to have to have a way to engage that community do so in a way that's positive and uplifting. as republicans, we're at our best when we talk to people's hopes and dreams and aspirations versus their fears and anger and dre desperations. so if donald trump is going to pivot, that pivot has to happen soon and it has to be strong. >> are you going to vote for him in november? >> you know, craig, i'm challenged as to who i'm going to vote for. i cannot vote for donald trump right now. i think hillary clinton has got some serious issues as well. i wish i had a conservative

republican forward-looking optimistic candidate that i can vote for. so people have five choices. either trump, hillary clinton, gary johnson, write in a candidate or stay home. i'd rather not stay home. i'd rather vote for someone who has a positive outlook, which is what the republican party used to stand for. >> i do wish we had more time. thank you both for your insight. ahead here, hillary clinton and bernie sanders running neck in neck in california leading up to that big primary tuesday. would a golden state victory give sanders the momentum to pick off some superdelegates from clinton? he'd had a pick off a whole heck of a lot of them. stay with us, this is msnbc.

millennials. it's pretty shocking that they haven't welcomed all this energy and new blood. there are more independent voters than there are democrats. >> that was actor and outspoken bernie sanders supporter susan sarandon there with chris janzing in modesto, california, on thursday. chris joins me now from fairfield, california, halfway between san francisco and sacramento. that is where senator sanders will be holding a rally later this afternoon. chris, always good to see you. here we are just a few days away from tuesday, the big primary there in that state. what are you hearing from the campaign on this final weekend of campaigning? >> reporter: big final push, right? there's kind of good news and bad news. the good news is that these last two polls, including our nbc poll, shows them within the margin of error, so when you talk to people who do this polling, they say, look, this is a state that's up for grabs. in january, hillary clinton was up 11 points.

she's doing her final push here as well, something that wasn't scheduled. although they wouldn't say it explicitly, obviously that's not good news for the sanders campaign. they would love to have the state to themselves. they have been advertising on tv to the tune of about $1.2 million, $1.3 million i think is the updated number, compared to hillary clinton, around $800,000. having said that, in a state this size, that's not a lot of money. tens of millions of dollars, for example, are spent on senate campaigns here. so for bernie sanders it's what this has been about for months as they have been for california and that is barnstorming, getting to as many places as they can, getting in front of as many eyeballs as they can. predicting yesterday, bernie sanders himself, that he expects to see 250,000 people in this final long last push through california, including last night in chico where there were 5800 people, another big crowd outdoors. kind of a sweltering night as it

has been in this part of california. here he is making his case to the folks who are assembled there to get out and vote. bernie sanders from last night. >> if we can win california and north dakota -- and south dakota and north dakota and if we can win montana and if we can win new mexico and if we can do well in new jersey, we are going to go marching into the democratic convention with enormous momentum. >> reporter: but the key to that momentum is winning california. they have really just started this campaign having conversation what happens between california and the convention. a lot of those conversations will be dictated by whether or not he wins here. you cannot overstate how important this is to the sanders campaign. in the meantime, he has three events today, including one in berkeley and then ending the day in cloverdale. on the day before the election
