tv   MSNBC Live  MSNBC  June 3, 2016 10:00am-11:01am PDT

10:00 am
it is an interesting stuff on this website. it is going to take a lot of time to go through it, andrea. >> and as you go through it, i know it will be on msnbc right here. ron mott, thank you very much. >> that does it for us for "andrea mitchell reports," remember to follow our show online and on twitter, we'll be here covering all the politics. craig melvin is up nenxt right here on msnbc. hi everyone, i am craig melvin, breaking news right now, five american olivesoldiers are and four are still missing flash flood water -- >> we were able to rescue three soldiers. our priority has been since the first report of this incident
10:01 am
and continues to be the search for our four missing teammates. >> flash flood watches in effect for much of southeast texas as well as parts of louisiana this afternoon. 24 hours rainfall record were broken in one texas city. the next hour, texas governor, greg abbott will be joined by some of the hardest hit area. >> video right now giving you an idea of the all awful power of this. there were a couple of dogs inside the truck trying to over flood. instead, they become pinned at the tree at the creek's bank. >> they got out. the couple and the dog did make out of the truck alive. however, at least 14 are dead so far including those fort hood
10:02 am
soldiers. all of this is a result of flooding from the rain stretching back to last week. we got some video from just a few moments ago. this is the scene we are told in texas, three miles south of houston. as you can see there flooded banks and folks appeared to be some of them trapped in the road ways there. again in texas, we got reports about 200 miles on the tragedy that's unfolding in the lone star state. we start with gabe gutierrez, i know you got new information for the search of these four missing soldiers, what are you hearing and learning? >> reporter: hi there, craig, this active search of operation is under way. now, authorities say they have found a few backpacks this morning that are tied to some of
10:03 am
these soldiers. however, right now the search continues for these four missing soldiers. right now there are five soldiers who are dead and three of them were hospitalized and right now they're in stable condition and although military officials told us a short time ago they maybe released later today. there is still a lot of questions on what led up to this. a short time ago, we did speak with folks here at fort hood, they describe what led up to this tactical vehicle to be over turned by these rushing waters. lets listen to what he had to say. >> it was a situation where the rain rising quickly and we are in the process at the moment of the event. >> right now it is unclear when they went out for this training. they were training as part of a convoy operation where they're learning how to use a vehicle. the unit had just returned a short time ago and a few months
10:04 am
ago from a deployment in south korea. we do not know the identities of these soldiers. we are waiting for the noti notifications from families. >> thank you, gabe gutierrez. >> he's in richmond, texas. this is just outside houston. kerry, a flash flood warning in effect for your area, what's the scene right now? >> reporter: it stopped raining here. there is more rain in the forecast. as you noted that i am i am richmond. this is normally a street but now it has turned into a flood zone. not too far from here, the community that you mentioned at the top of the hour here is where the authorities are currently evacuating one of the state's prison.
10:05 am
1700 inmates being evacuated. because of the water appears to be rising in certain areas, it is a smartest thing to do. of course, the real problem is some of those inmates there are from the security style pris prisoners are in their serving time for rape and murder. in richmond, community is trying to deal with this. we have two residents who live here, i am curious first of all, you have been out of your home for how long now? >> since tuesday night. >> reporter: you have like a regular harden structure down there. have you had a chance to get in there and see? >> yes, i went in there by boat yesterday and it is about half way up my front door. >> reporter: so your content
10:06 am
are? >> my content are under. i didn't go in. i cannot get in because my house is a little lower than herso all my stuff are put up on blocks. the bottoms are all messed up. i think it is maybe a total disaster, too. >> reporter: have you seen anything like this? >> no, i have lived here 49 years. i am one o f the older residence here and never. it got to my mailbox a couple of time where you can walk around it but never like this. >> reporter: you were rescued and taken out. how did you get out. the next question is when can you go back in? not until the water is really down. >> until it is down. i left at 2:00 in the morning when my neighbor and her husband got me and the richmond fire department, the next morning they came and got all my animals and they were so good to help.
10:07 am
they helped everybody that had animals stuck in there. >> reporter: you live along the river and there are two types of insurance, homeowner's insurance and flood insurance. do you have flood insurance? >> yes. >> my husband passed away and i gotten a loan in the bank instead of going into my savings. it was good to have it. thank godness. >> reporter: requirements help you both. thank you very much, we know you have a lot to go through. i know you are exhausted by all of this. thank you for sharing some of your tough times here. >> my daughter gotten me out and my car and everything. my tahoe but the fire department is great, all you have to do is say you need something and they are here. >> reporter: we do know that, they are not too far away from her, the command post is exha t exhausted, thankfully as they look up there is a little break
10:08 am
in the sky where you can see a little bit of blue skies. there is more rain forecast but not like we have had. >> all right, in richmond texas. our thoughts and prayers are with the folks there in richmond. richmond texas is in fort ben county. thank you for carving out a few moment for us, i know you are very busy there. the evacuation of this maximum security prison in the area, what more can you tell us about that? >> well, all i can tell you about that is the state determined they needed to evacuate that prison which is down in the southern end of the county. the water is still rising down there. although it is dropping enrichment as we speak. we are down about half a foot. the water is still rising in the southern end of the county as it flows towards peoria county.
10:09 am
they are looking at a larger flood. the state is moving those prisoners i am told just to be overly cautious. >> i am told that you have been in fort ben county for a long time. how is what you are seeing now compare to flooding that you have seen? >> well, the previous record for the elevation of the river at richmond right outside my office was 50.3 feet, it was set twice last year, we had a memorial day event we reached 50 points and 1994, we are four feet above that at 54.8, which i don't think anybody alive has seen that in fort ben county. it is not quite 100 year flood and 55 feet is 100 year flood on
10:10 am
the river. we crest at two tenth2/10 of a . it is impacting about 40,000 residents in fort ben county and it is a real disaster for those folks. >> how much were you able to prepare? >> we had pretty good warning because this was triggered by local rainfall. this was triggered by the rain up in the station area. a couple of weeks ago and it is been a wall of water coming down the river that we had ampled time to repair for. that does not make the laws any less serious for those that got water in their homes. but, now it is receding and we are keeping an eye ball on the sky because they tell us we can end up to get six inches of rain
10:11 am
in the next 34 hours. that's the critical time. if we can bodge the rain sunday morning, we should have a defenda -- it will take another several days to get the river back into its banks. we had a lot of help from the states and as you heard our volunteer fire departments and our municipalities are doing great. >> judge bob ayber coming to us from fort ben county. we have been watching the scene played out here over the past three hours in days here. >> the same sentiment i just echoed with our previous guests, our thoughts and prayers with everyone. keep us posted. trump's aid telling nbc news, "defeat us."

10:15 am
new this afternoon, from inside donald trump campaign that they are worried and frustrated. hillary clinton spent part of thursday afternoon mocking his plan and temperament of her most fiery and aggressive attack of her republican rivalry. a few hours later, trump goes after her in san jose, california. >> lying, crooked hillary. [ cheers ] >> she's a liar. she made up my foreign policy. anything obama wants she's going forward with, she does not want to go to jail, folks.
10:16 am
>> trump now letting up on his critici criticism. pointing to courier, trump said, "i am building a wall." the campaign weighed into that fight. judge courier is held of the american dream. again, a live look there. and a live look right now and rather this event in california where we are expecting of any minute now. we are expecting hillary clinton to deliver her remarks. we are keeping a close eye on that rally. i want to bring in nbc's katy tur in california where donald trump is holding a rally in redding. i understand that you got some new reporting on what the trump
10:17 am
campaign is telling you behind the scenes and all of this? >> reporter: yes, i just got off the phone with a few donald trump aids, they are at their wit ends with the campaign and the candidate. these comments against judge courier, they're calling them, the thing that'll defeat us. a lot of frustration the can date going out. they're calling this extraordinary problematic and now paul ryan is getting into this on talk radio show today saying that he does not agree with the comments, take a listen how he phrased it. >> the comment of the judge the other day was at a left field on my mind. i don't relate to and i completely disagree with his thinking. i had to speak up from time to time when that occurred and i
10:18 am
will continue to do that if necessary, i hope it is not. >> reporter: this is extraordinary important, paul ryan endorsed donald trump yesterday after a month long wait. a day later now he's on the radio show about comments of judge courier has come out and he does not agree with him and mitch mcconnell he's worried that donald trump is buried in gold water and he may alienate the same way -- only a couple of hours later that's when this post article came out with donald trump called into question of the ethnicity again of the judge escalating and saying he could not be independent and better of the conflict of interest. the aid i have been talking to
10:19 am
in the campaign calling it problematic across the board right now. they're trying to help donald trump with the number of unfavorabl unfavorables. last week they're supposed to announce the endorsement of hundreds of separate people with ceo and decorated veterans for trump. that did not happen because of the insighting citing of the ca. there are two camps inside the campaign right now. the paul manafort team and the corey lewandowski team of strategies for amending these unfavorables. this is just causing a lot of problems and they're worried it is going to end up sinking this campaign and giving clinton or bernie sanders the election. >> katy tur with fascinating insights of trump. donald trump is holding a rally coming up at 4:00 in redding,
10:20 am
california. this is after some of the most violent protests we have seen so far this political season. while trump was launching an attack inside this rally. this was a scene holding outside of that of a flat out ugly scene as you saw the clashes with protesters and supporters as well. one woman of trump supporter was thrown in the face with eggs. and you have protesters burning an american flag. you can see that right there in the middle of your screen and others vetting trump's famous make america great hat on fire. one officers were assaulted and a few folks were arrested before police were able to get it all under control. hours ago, trump tweeted this. >> "rally last night was great in san jose, outside small group
10:21 am
of thugs burning the american flag." jacob r jacob rascon was there, he's in redding right now. i watched you last night on our air here and one of the most bizarre things immediately seems where you had the police officers there who were in riot gear watching it all unfold. >> reporter: they did and we have seen it several times in last week in anaheim in san diego and after the rally ends, we see protesters and supporters finding each other and clash that goes on for hours. san jose, i don't remember seeing a crowd of protest leaving the area and targeting trump supporters as they walk by. we see a lot of rhetoric back and forth and taunting. what we don't see is a follow through. this is different in san jose.
10:22 am
protesters would rush trump supporters and follow through. someone would come behind and hit them in the back of the head and a lot of kicking and pushing on the ground. one of the most extreme examples that we watched is hundreds of protesters gathered around this one trump supporter who was wearing a trump jersey and they were taunting and saying -- they started throwing food and she was hit with eggs several times in the face and she was escorted away. the entire time as you pointed out, mostly the police officers were standing back and in fact, sometimes there were several blocks behind. it did not seem ready for all of this as it is the case when it gets out of hand. today at the airport, we are not expecting a lot of protesters. we are in a conservative and small city at an airport hanger where it is just really hard to get to. there is an area set of protesters and we don't expect much activity. craig.
10:23 am
>> thank you, jacob rascon there. we love for you to join our conversation as well. here is today's pulse question. does donald trump has the appropriate temperament to be president, you can cast your votes at pulsemsnbc.com.

nomination battling bernie sanders. los angetimes shows that clinton is in the lead lie tby points. sanders refused to give up. >> and if there is a large voter turn out on tuesday here in california, we are going to win here and we are going to win it big. [ cheers ] >> meanwhile prominent democrat stepping up pressure on the vermont senator to get out. >> my message to bernie sanders is, i think if you look at the election that's coming up and not only in california but in other states as well, hillary clinton will likely have the 71 additional delegates she needs before closing of polls on
10:33 am
tuesday. everything you do now should be not to provide divisions on our side of the isle, on the democratic side but to bring people together. >> jeff weaver, campaign manager for senator sanders joining me right now. >> let me give you a response of diane feinstein. >> let me say something about that. the truth the matter is and this is been recorded on other news sources. the fact that there is an active and primary primary helping democrats in a tremendous way in california about the legislative live l lev level or the senate level. the top two candidates advance to the general election regardless of what party they're from. and so now in california looks like the senate race and the u.s. senate race and the top
10:34 am
candidates and democrats and the state legislature races. i am a little surprise senator feinstein suggests that he would not campaign vigorously in california. >> this idea that comes tuesday and she will have including super delegates to secure the nomination for clinton. again, that's what she was getting there. what's your response to that. the spokesperson for dnc himself, there will be no nominee until they get to the convention. super delegates don't vet until we go to philadelphia. what we have is a survey of super delegates. those are fully able to change their votes and changing their allegiances. we saw that back in 2008 where a number of super delegates twitched to senator barack obama. >> jeff, are you guys actively
10:35 am
behind the scenes trying to get these super delegates to change? you correct me if i am wrong, we are talking about roughly 300 super delegates would have to vote for senator sanders, have you gotten indication from a large number of them that is something that could happen? >> well, as the senator or has said, as this process whines down, we'll intensify efforts to reach out to super delegates. the truth the matter is, there are hundreds and hundreds of clintons so called super delegates who announced their support for her before there was a race, before we have seen all these recent and consistent polls that bernie sanders by far -- >> i heard you guys said that in the past. i think it is important that we acknowledge one of the reasons
10:36 am
and perhaps that is the case is bernie sanders has not had a slew of negative ads against him in the past years either. >> a fact checking source and fact checking that and her people had been saying that of the process. in fact, that's absolutely wrong. number of occasions and high negative ads running against him and other places. the truth the matter is, he's run an issuance of campaign. >> you were asked about my colleague, chris mathews earlier if senator is planning to release his taxes, you could not give a date or would not give a date, can you give one now? >> i cannot. the senator's wife is out campaigning and they do their own taxes. the year they release in 2014,
10:37 am
his whole family made less than a year than clinton made in one speech. the family has been on tp road campaigning in california and other places. when it is done, he will return to his administrative task. >> he's going to release his taxes before the convention. >> yes, he did say he would so when he says something he does it. >> jeff weaver from the sanders campaign. >> thanks so much. great to be here. former california governor green day v green day vis is going to join me to talk about the battle for the golden state. that on to my s something that makes me happy my name is roger zapata and i'm a usaa member for life.
10:38 am

former california davis, i understand that you were listening closely there to my conversation with jeff weaver, i want to get your take on what he says. >> hillary will be the nominee before the votes are counted in california, but she just cares about winning this state. that's why she devoted five days to it. she gave a great speech yesterday and proves that she has a great temperament and what does donald trump does? he goes to twitter and reading from a telepromtepter. people want to know what his plan is, he has to have a plan to move america forward. his plan is criticizing our allies and the prim minister of
10:42 am
the uk and praise some of the countries that are in a comba combative role. i don't think he has a plan. >> as we are having this conversation, that's garcelle , any time she is speaking, i want to take a listen. governor, standby, lets listen in a few minutes. >> i feel that it is not only a time to have a lady -- as president, i think it is really important for us to come together and not let america go in the hands of someone who's reckless, someone who's dividing us and someone who's not supporting us. we can all have our opinions.
10:43 am
i am really grateful to be here with all these amazing, a's magima amazing women. >> now, governor, thank you very much for indulging me. >> how concern this is? >> i am certain she's going to win and certain she's going to be the nominee and certain she's going to be the next president. the worst thing that happens if she loses by a point or two and the chattering class has something to chew on for three or four days. that'll not change the reality that she will be the nominee and the next president. >> governor, we would have more time had it not been for garcelle . >> no problem, i enjoy listen to her.

he ought to be unitrying to unify the party. he needs to play his role in all of that as well. if you want a break in this, you would think america can do better in taking a different pa path. there is an alternative that's trying to lead america in a different direction. that was mitch mcconnell giving a backing to trump this week. this comes after paul ryan's endorsement. as we have seen endorsements don't necessary mean strong backing. pick thursday, clinton is speaking nearly an hour attacking trump, there is a noticeable style of party leaders defending trump after clinton's rally yesterday.
10:48 am
here is new jersey, a former governor a few hours here on msnbc. >> he's been showing of the way he's facing his campaign. but, the way he is treated dp p groups of people and demonizing them of their ethnic background and the way he's taken on and this judge in california is outrage. what scares me is the emotions that he's unleashing in people. you don't put back in the box very easily. >> joined now conservative radio host and editor and chief, charles, we heard from governor wittman there of this back and forth with the judge. i want to play of speaker ryan. this was an hour or two ago on a radio show talking about donald trump back and forth with this judge. here is speaker paul ryan.
10:49 am
>> the comment about the judge, i completely disagree with the thinking behind that. he says things that i don't agree with. i had to speak up from time to time if that occurs and i will continue do that if it is not necessary, i hope it is not. >> paul ryan endorsing trump yesterday, 29 days after that meeting. >> is this what we are doing to see the next five months of folks either endorse or support will continue to speak out of things he said or done. >> yeah, that's going to be some remorses and it will be tough for paul ryan because he's a decent guy who has a conscious. donald trump, those comments at a left field and consistent with donald trump's rhetoric and he made a comment about the judge before paul ryan endorsed him. having said that, look, i try to warn conservatives. if you support donald trump, you are going to own all of this and
10:50 am
spend the next five months rationalizing these slurs and insults. paul ryan's endorsement comes at the end of donald trump's month behaving badly. he made seems to have doubled down on some of those tactics? . >> you would acquiesce the takeover is now complete with speaker ryan essentially endo e endorsing. >> the takeover at least in the washington establishment. they've gone from anger and grief now to bargaining. i think they're some what naive even delusional to think they can control donald trump or put this genie back in the bottle. i will tell you, there's still a lot of voters looking at these two choices and saying america is a good and great country, do we really have to choose between hillary clinton and donald trump? yeah. i think the folks in washington have made their peace with this but that does not necessarily mean you will not have a lot of
10:51 am
voters who wish in november they had an alternative choice. >> has he reached out to you again since the primary there? >> you're talking about donald trump? >> yes. >> oh, yeah. he wrote me a note a couple weeks ago and sent me a copy of the "new york times" and crawled a note across that say, will win and hopes i change my mind. if donald trump would show he would change i would certainly be opening to listening to him. what's very clear is that he's not. i think again, it was four weeks ago paul ryan said he was not ready to endorse. what has changed in the last four weeks? he lashed out at susanna martinez, he is attacking this federal judge and made it very very clear he will continue to attack reporters for doing their job. at what point are people going to look around and say what donald trump, what you see is what you get here. i kind of understand why the republican establishment is doing what they're doing, trying to minimize their losses, i know
10:52 am
paul ryan is about to roll out new policy initiative and i think he was concerned if he didn't make this endorsement, donald trump might kneecap him or torpedo or disavow this agenda. in the end, this is not a negotiations, this ino the art of the deal, capitulation to donald trump. i think a lot of them will regret that. >> what would trump have to do to get your endorsement? >> well, there would have to be a willing suspension of disbelief, a 69-year-old man who will not be changing his character or demeanor. i think what he has to show is at some point he has some sense of the responsibility of the madjesty of the job of presiden. show some humility, seriousness on policy or maybe some humility or regret about the way that he has talked about various groups about women. i don't see any of that happening. i think in the last month he's made it very very clear it's his way.
