good morning. here's what happening. new information about his last moments with family. and attacking donald trump about comments he made against a federal judge. and bernie sanders still fighting for his hopes of a contested convention and why it's not over to be over. and the key primary that could
4:01 am
put hillary clinton over the top. that's all ahead. we begin with the latest on the death of muhammad ali. a family spokesman revealed the champion died of toxic shock. they whispered in his ear, you can go now, we will be okay, thank you. ali's body expected to arrive in his hometown of louisville, kentucky, within the next 24 hours. a day long affair will include a motorcade through the streets where the world champion grew up and learned to box. it has become the place to mourn the hometown hero. the plans were outlined years ago based on ali's wishes. what can you tell us? >> good morning, and in fact
4:02 am
officials at the center that i spoke to yesterday said the ali's were involved in the decisions made here, and you can come in and pretend you are shadow boxing with ali, and this was designed for the pup of preserving his legacy, which is why in death people have come here to celebrate his life. he was called the greatest of all-time, but to them he was just dad. >> it's very rough at this point for the family. all family members are having a tough time. >> as a family mourns their father, the world celebrates a legend. >> i'm not bubba -- >> paying tribute, generations too young to remember his right cross and those that can still see it when they close their eyes. >> he was my childhood hero, and -- and he was just amazing. >> when you say boxing, you say ali, and it's that simple. >> on social media, an

outpouring of greatest. you will always be the greatest for more than what you did in the ring. >> president obama posting, he shook up the world and the world is better for it. >> who he was as a person was greater than his legend. >> perhaps nowhere is his absence more personal than in the town that made him a hero. >> muhammad ali belongs to the world but only has one hometown. >> amazing to know we grew up in the same area he did, and i think it's fabulous. he took what he had and made something of himself. >> what kind of legacy do you think he left from african-america african-americans. >> you can come from the gutter and rise above any obstacle. >> posting on twitter, all of his organs failed but his heart would not stop beating, for 30 minutes, his heart just kept
4:04 am
beating, the exit of a champion. >> i spoke to people from west louisville, which is where ali is from and he taught them you could do anything, which is why the people here in louisville are saying that even though he was the world's legacy, he was their hometown hero. thanks. now a look at political headlines. caucusing in puerto rico, and today's contest will come on the heels of hillary clinton winning the caucus in the virgin islands and so far picked up 8 of the 12 available. that puts clinton 57 delegates shy of clinching the nomination. and bernie sanders once again warning democrats that the convention won't be a shoo-in for hillary clinton. this is what he told reporters in los angeles yesterday. >> it's extremely unlikely that secretary clinton will have the
4:05 am
requisite number of pledged delegates to claim victory on tuesday night. at the end of the nominating process, no candidate will have enough pledged delegates to call the campaign a victory, they will be dependent upon super delegates, in other words, the democratic national convention will be a contested convention. >> clinton was also in california yesterday where she took this jab at donald trump. >> i know we have never done this before, we have never had a woman president. i have spent a lot of hours in the situation room working to solve some of the hardest problems we face, and i know, i know how hard this job is, and how much humility you need to
4:06 am
have, and how you should actually listen to people who have good ideas. >> meantime, trump supporter, newt gingrich is the latest in a slew of republicans to criticize the presumptive nominee about his comments about the judge. gingrich says, quote, i don't know what trump's reasoning was and i don't care, and his description of the judge in terms of his parentage is unacceptable, and trump is off the campaign trail today, and for more from the campaign trail, here is nbc's kristen
4:07 am
welker. >> hillary clinton keeping up her assault against donald trump. >> we are trying to elect a president, not a dictator. >> hitting trump again for stepping up attacks against federal judge, the indiana-born judge with mexican roots overseeing the trump university controversy. >> this is not normal politics. this is something much, much more dangerous. >> bernie sanders also taking aim at the billionaire businessman. >> his bigotry against women and veterans and african-americans is not something that can be tolerated. >> tprupl is facing new amizations of racism for doubling down on his criticism of the judge. >> no mexican judge could be involved in a case that involves
4:08 am
you. >> he's in a society that is pro-mexico, and that's fine. >> many gop leaders denounce the racially tinged rhetoric. >> look at my african-american over here, look at him. >> what he did to me was just a misstep, and, again, i was not offended by what he said. >> off the trail, trump is trying to put the focus back on protesters that got violent at his san jose rally this past week, tweeting many of the thugs that attacked the peaceful trump supporters in san jose were illegals, and there's no information they were undocumented. >> anytime i see that kind of actions by any one at a public gathering, it's wrong. >> that was nbc's kristin welker reporting. and halle, the candidate kept a
4:09 am
low profile this weekend and are we more likely to hear more about him from the trump university case. >> as you saw, house speaker and others have called his comments unacceptable. he is off the campaign trail today but we see to potentially see him tomorrow or hear from his allies. >> with more republicans now criticizing trump for his attacks on the judge, are there concerned the lawsuit could cause real damage to the campaign? >> not from trump himself, of course, todd, that's what he would say, dismissing any talk this could be damaging to him. you saw some of his rivals then, people like marco rubio trying to come after him on trump university, and we know clinton is going to go after trump on
4:10 am
trump university, and why, because this could resonate with the american people who feel they were taken advantage of, and with the lawsuit, they could say, donald trump, this is how he s. and he says he is a great businessman, but this is what happens when he does run a business. that said the trump campaign, trump himself, he said, listen, this is a lawsuit without merit, and this is something that i am fighting on principle, because i think it's wrong, and unconcerned this will hurt him, particularly when his base of support, and so at this point, you have got to see how it plays out over the coming weeks and last week you saw some of the records unsealed. >> and trump was being criticized for pointing out an african-american supporter at the california rally last week and is the republican establishment getting concerned about quote, unquote, nominee trump? >> there's always concern from some areas of the republican
4:11 am
party, and that has not gone away. that still exists. you have seen, as he has become the nominee, more people come from behind him, you and look at our polling and the numbers since he became the candidate, and it was like 72%, and 7 in 10 said they would back him, and so among the rank and file, you have seen a growing acceptance of donald trump, and what you are seeing now over the weekend and over the last 72 hours there's concern from some leaders, and that's interesting, he told nbc news over the weekend it was unwise and inappropriate to make the comments about the judge, and gingrich is somebody on the potentially rumored to be a vice presidential candidate, and so for him to condemn his remarks, trump may take that as a signal,
4:12 am
and then again, this is donald trump the candidate who does what he wants to do. >> yeah, and one more question before i let you go. trump is going to be meeting allegedly with the new mexico governor. do we think that will help or hurt or not do anything at all with the standing of the republicans? >> it's interesting, and we're talking about the new mexico governor, and she and trump recently got into it when he held that rally in albuquerque, new mexico, and he bashed her, and he was upset she said she was too busy to attend that rally. that was a real concern for republicans. you heard top republicans saying trump has to stop criticizing fellow gop members, and so the fact there may be some kind of meeting or she said she would be interested in one and trump said he backed off his attacks of
4:13 am
her, and it's significant because trump is realizing and taking into consider some of the remarks that have been talked about in republican circles. >> as we have seen so far, vitriol can turn to hugs the next day. coming up, we head to puerto rico where voting in the democrat kwreubg primary, set to start soon. more rain is looming for the lone star state when we come back. you don't let anything keep you sidelined.

let's go live this morning to the ali center in louisville, kentucky, where in the last day people have stopped by and paid tribute to the champ. some have placed flowers at the growing makeshift memorial there. muhammad ali is being remembered for raising awareness about parkinson's disease. here is ran mott on the battle. >> often sending men crashing to the canvas. the one opponent he couldn't escape, parkinson's disease, a three-decade long battle. >> won't stop fighting until there's a cure.

>> i'm still bad, and i believe i'll make a comeback. >> he became the face of a debilitating disorder that a million americans live with today and one that ravaged his body and stole his voice. >> before i was diagnosed with parkinson's, i admired him and i admired his athleticism and poise and class and style and his belief in what he thought was right and i met him and joined with him in a common cause and a common fight, and who else would you want in your corner. >> if you asked muhammad, if you told him this would have happened, he would have chose it because this was his mission. >> he used his incredible presence for the betterment of society. >> an important partner in ali's

sure there was no issues and the count was happening. it's a close race because there's not a lot of polling here so an uncertain race, and so far in the informal poll, we have three bernie sanders supporters here. why do you think bernie sanders will win today in puerto rico? >> i think other people in puerto rico like sanders because he is a humanistic person. >> humanisic? why do you like sanders? >> because we are having problems and he understand our problems, really, and he is trying to do something for us. >> thank you. the other thing we are monitoring, the number of polling stations overall declined and in 2008 last time there was an open democratic party, there was more than 2,000 polling places, and as recently as may there were more than 1,500 and then because of budget

cuts and there is an island with financial problems, and people in the sanders camp are complaining and it's not a matter of the democratic party doing that but it's an election commission issue. the key difference policy wise, hillary clinton supports an effort in the u.s. senate to rescue puerto rico from its debt obligations but bernie sanders opposes that plan, because it will hand puerto rico over to the big banks that he wants to break up. back to you. >> when do polls close today? >> 3:00 p.m. we will be with you until then. >> tony for us in san juan, and thank you very much. that wraps up this hour of msnbc live. up neck, "your business,"
