good day to all of you. i'm alex witt here at msnbc world headquarters in new york. we begin with new reaction from former house speaker newt gingrich and other trump supporters. they are condemning the presumptive nominee for his claims that one of the judges in his trump university lawsuit is biassed because of his mexican heritage. >> is that not a racist statement? >> i couldn't disagree more with a statement like that. >> is it a racist statement? >> i couldn't disagree more with what he had to say. >> i don't think itdo you thina statement? >> i think it was a mistake. i hope it was sloppiness. he says on other occasions that he has many mexican fries, et cetera, but that's irrelevant. >> i don't condone the comment.

>> also reaction from donald trump about these comments. >> if you are saying he can't do his job because of his race, is that not the definition of racism? >> no, i don't think so at all. >> no? >> no. he's proud of his heritage. i respect him for that. >> you're saying he can't do his job because of that. >> he's proud of his heritage. we're building a wall. he's a mexican. we're building a wall between here and mexico. >> meanwhile, hillary clinton is blaming trump for the rash of violence at his most recent rallies. that includes one of his supporters being pelted with eggs by a protesters. >> he set a very bad example. he created an environment in which it seemed to be acceptable for someone running for president to be inciting violence, to be encouraging his supporters. now we're seeing people who are against him responding in kind. it should all stop. it is not acceptable.

>> with two days until the last set of key primaries, bernie sanders once again is vowing to take his campaign to the democratic convention. >> i don't want to speculate about who will end up having more pledge delegates. she is ahead of us right now, no question. but california is coming up. they've got 475 pledge delegates here. you don't know what the world is going to be like four weeks from now, but let's not forget democratic convention is the end of july. both democratic candidates as well as former president bill clinton are in california for six events. let's go right to puerto rico where voters are right now casting their ballots at a primary. in this last hour, i know, tony that we heard from one resident who was having trouble voting. his name wasn't even includes in the registry. was that just a single case scenario? >> reporter: unfortunately it was not, alex.

you know, puerto ricans are very excited about the primary today. there is a tremendous line. it's about a 30-minute wait for the local election and an even longer line for the national primary. hillary clinton and bernie sanders are dividing opinions here. you mentioned that individual we spoke to in the last hour. he arrived here, was unable to find his name on the registry. unfortunately he's not alone at all. one of the issues is a closure of polling stations. way back in 2008 there were more than 2,000 polling stations. as of just last month there were 1500. then it was cut to 1100. today there are only 435 polling stations open. that's one of the reasons for the long lines. people are scrambling to find out if their polling station is open, closes or othd or otherwi. we caught up with one woman who is tracking down her location.

>> so far it's a little bit frustrating. i've been preparing for this day for a while. i registered to vote for the first time this year, april 12th, in time to be eligible for the primaries. i know my precinct and everything. but on all the internet sites mine looked like one of the ones that are going to be closed. it didn't give me any specific place to come. >> reporter: she came here. she went to another place. she came back here. as far as we know she's still been unable to vote. the people who are in that predicament happen to be bernie sanders supporters. if there were more open primaries and more polling stations open, if independents were allowed to participate everywhere, we might be looking at a different outcome. >> well, polling stations close

there in about two hours at 3:00 p.m. eastern time. thank you for that. republican leaders are expressing frustration other comments donald trump made that could hurt the party's chances with latino voters. hallie jackson is covering the campaign for us. the majority leader hoping donald trump will change his tone. any sense of that from the campaign officially? >> no, alex. i mean, listen, trump says what donald trump wants to say. this has been a consistent theme of his for the last 11 months since he announced his candidacy for office. now that he is the presumptive nominee there is less incentive for him to change because trump will point to the fact that he won the nomination, that he got the votes for republicans. the question or concern that you're hearing now from some party leaders is that as the turn happens to the general election looking like trump will go up against now the likely democratic nominee hillary clinton although she hasn't clenched yet, is how will

trump's comments and tone play with general election voters, not with primary voters. this is why you heard newt gingrich come out this morning and talk about judge curiel who is overseeing the lawsuit against trump university. >> this judge was born in indiana. he is an american, period. when you come to america, you get to become an american. and trump, who has grandparent who is came to the u.s., should understand this as much as anybody. i think that it was a mistake. i hope it was sloppiness. he says on other occasions that he has many mexican friends et cetera, but that's irrelevant. >> he said the comments from trump were simply inappropriate.

24 when we look ahead to tomorrow, when we look ahead to the rest of the week sthe california primary, the question is how trump responds now to the reaction from party leaders. meantime, happening now on the death of muhammad ali, a family spokesperson revealed the boxing legend died of septic shock. he spent days at an arizona hospital from complications of parkinson's disease. he died surrounded by his family. his daughter says, we all tried to stay strong and whispered in his ear you can go now, we will be okay. ali's body will arrive in his hometown of louisville kentucky. on friday his family will honor ali's wishes with a multifaith public funeral. a motorcade will travel through the streets of louisville so people can say good-bye personally to the greatest of

all time. what are you hearing, craig, from those who have come to pay their respects to muhammad ali? >> reporter: one of the things that we discovered quickly when we got to louisville early yesterday is that pretty much everyone over the age of, says 45 or 50, they all have some sort of muhammad ali story, either someone went to school with him or someone went to school with someone who knew him or they remembered this event where he was. everyone here has an ali story. i want to show you this memorial, alex, that continues to grow. in addition to the balloons and flowers and all of these things, a number of pieces of artwork have popped up here as well. it's been very interesting to see the people who come by, young and old, some of them

to which he went to denounce trump's remarks? he's been reportedly advising trump recently. and you know his name's been bantered about as a veep candidate. >> the comments he made about the judge are unacceptable. and we're hearing comments by others in the gop, paul ryan includes. donald trump is going to say what donald trump wants to say and there's no changing that. but where he runs into a problem is as gingrich said that may have been okay in the primary. however we move now into the general election. the electorate is much more diverse. being disparaging toward a judge who he claims is a mexican, who is actually from indiana, he needs to be worried about how he's going to alienate the people of indiana by a comment like that. this is something that

shouldn't -- need to be a lot more cautious. hopefully he has advisors on his campaign that are encouraging him to be a lot more cognizant of the fact that the electorate moving forward is going to be a lot different and he needs to tone down the rhetoric. >> in your position as a former senior communications advisor, a national spokesperson, say you're paul manafort who comes on to the trump campaign and he said he's going to have trump be more presidential. and yet you don't see any evidence of that in the month or so since. what can you do as an advisor to keep trump from being trump? >> you have to look at it also from the standpoint -- donald trump, i'm sure his response would be, i'm winning. and he is going to be the presumptive nominee and from his standpoint he sees if it's working, why change things. but as we said, moving forward

into the general, it's a different electorate. and things do need to be toned down. manafort has suggested thr so ee some things that are going to have to change going forward. >> isn't that the reason to do it now? he's been the presumptive nominee for some time. it is a different electorate. he may win the gop nomination, but it's a much different ball game going into the general. >> right. if it were me, not that he would lien to my rem mcommendation, bt both of them need to focus on the issues and quit with these personal attacks against each other and against judges. who actually he should be thanks this judge who has made some favorable rulings in this case, one being that he pushed the trial in this back until after the election when it could have been before when it could have been disastrous. all of the attacks on different

people need to be toned down or eliminated from the dialogue here and pushing on what he's going to do to make this country great again. what is he going to do to make this country great? what is hillary going to do to turn things around? and we need to be more substantive discussions and comments on issues that are important to the people of this country, certainly being the economy, national security, immigration and focus on what they are going to do and give real solutions to the problems that people are concerned with and no more negative attacks. people are tired of that. that's both of their likability numbers are terrible. they need to work on improv improvesing. >> let's take a listen to what donald trump said at one of his rallies and the response to a supporter who pointed it out. >> we had a case where we had an african-american guy who was a fan of mine, great fan, great guy. in fact, i want to find out

what's going on with him. look at my african-american over here. look at him. are you the greatest? >> what he did to me it was a misstep. i wasn't offended by what he said. >> regardless of what the trump supporter said, is this trump alienating more voting groups. is this the path to general election victory? >> as i said, when you get into the general election, the electorate is much more diverse and those kind of comments certainly hopefully his advisors are encouraging him to tone that down. because that's not the way to bring more people into the republican party. but his goal moving forward is to appeal to the undecideds. and those that aren't necessarily going to vote for hillary clinton. he needs to bring in the undecideds and get their support. >> are you among the people who believe there should be a third party option? or are you resigned to a trump

candy? and what about the david french notion? >> in my view, the republican party needs to rally behind one person and start the fight against hillary clinton nap's the only way we're going to win. hillary clinton will be more than likely the democratic nominee. she will be a formidable candidate. it's incumbent upon the republican party to do -- donald trump is reaching out to the right people. he has made overtures to the groups that he needs to broaden his appeal. he is planning to have a meeting later this month with conservative leaders that will be critical to bringing the party together. for the gop to be successful moving forward, we need to rally behind one candidate and get all the support we can have from the social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, national security conservatives, all the wings of the republican party and build that base, build the spoeruppor

fingers and have millions of supporters march in line,s that not what our effort is about. it is secretary clinton's job to explain to those people why she should get their support. >> is that a fair statement by senator sanders? what must she do to earn the support of his supporters? >> no. absolutely, i agree with sanders that it is time to unite the people who are so convinced that we cannot have a trump presidency around the person who we know is going to be the democratic nominee and that is hillary clinton. and she is doing the hard work. i mean, she's been in oakland not just holding pep rallies but having substantive conversations about the real problems that people in my city are facing. things like only 10% of my high school students are going to have a college degree by the time they're 23.

the huge numbers of people who are coming out of prison, coming back home without skills. we had a fantastic dialogue in a restaurant that employs formerly incarcerated and the level of not just knowledge but sincere compassion that she showed around these real issues, that linked with her track record of being able to actually get things done in that impossible place that is washington, d.c., that's why i support her. >> why is it that you think people don't get a sense of exactly what you're explaining there, her sincere and deep compassion. why does that not translate on the campaign trail? >> hillary clinton is a policy wonk. she's incredibly smart. she's always looking for the actual road to success. i think that doesn't always translate well on the campaign field. but people have to remember we're not electing a beer

drinker in chief or a party thrower in chief. we're electing a commander in chief, somebody who's going to be able to deliver in the american dream, not just talk about it. >> do you worry listening to bernie sanders that he's unfairly damaging her chances? >> i respect the sanders campaign. this is a democracy. and it has changed the conversation in the campaign. but i really do think it's critical that everyone who does not want donald trump in the white house unites together and recognizes that at this point we really are in the general election. we really have to focus on that november election date. >> as you know, the polls appear to be tightening certainly in the california. clinton just holding a slight lead. 49-47 over sanders. what do you hear from your con

stitch we wa constituents there in oakland? >> i'm hearing people who were going to vote for bernie now deciding they have to vote for hillary clinton. we can't afford, almost like a ralph nader situation, where the democrat liberals split off. we can have a disastrous result. d i cannot imagine a more disastrous result than someone with the lack of intelligence, thoughtfulness, temperament like donald trump being in the white house, particularly for a city like oakland, a city that is so diverse, so full of people that really deserve better access to opportunities. donald trump would be a nightmare. whereas hillary clinton has a plan. she has a track record. she knows how to get things done. that is why i'm so excited about her being my president and for the people of oakland.

welcome back, everyone. i'm alex witt here at msnbc world headquarters in new york. now to california where hillary clinton is squeezing in a few final campaign stops today before tuesday's democratic primary. we have mrs. clinton just 57 delegates away from clenching the nomination. what is really at stake for her in this primary? >> well, alex, i think you've really seen secretary clinton pivot to the general election over the course of the last 72 hours. i think we've seen that it's a place that she feels a lot more comfortable. her aides will say privately she isn't well-suited to primary campaigns. she doesn't like dancing on the head of the pin where you're making distinctions that are smaller. you really saw her start to go after donald trump in a way that she clearly felt very

comfortable doing, in a way that gave a lot of democrats some reassurance that this campaign is going to go in their direction come the fall. and you've heard her continue to make that kind of argument even as this primary is still in its closing days. take a look at what she had to say earlier this morning. >> i'm suggesting that he's temperamentally unfit. he doesn't really have ideas. he makes bizarre rants and engages in personal feuds and out right lies. he does apparently seem to have very thin skin. and i think that those kind of attributes, that temperament is ill-suited for someone to be our president and commander in chief. >> that of course echoing that major speech that was billed as a foreign policy this speech and ended up being a very, very political focus on donald trump.

her campaign chairman also out today saying that this was the line of attack that they plan to pursue through november. how they do particularly here in california could impact the next five weeks and whether or not it becomes easier for hillary clinton to unify the democratic party or whether it still splinters because of bernie sanders. the sanders wins here in california -- and you see there the current poll showing just how close the race is. if she were to lose to him here, that's potentially a psychological blow that could hinder efforts at bringing the party together. i do get the sense that consider the strength of that performance that she put in that speech last week, there's an increasing imperative and more pressure on bernie sanders to essentially let democrats turn and focus all of their fire power on donald trump instead of dragging out the next five weeks ahead of this convention in some sort of

disarray that could ultimately hinder clinton this fall. >> when that will happen remains to be seen. thank you so much. what do you read? it seems like a simple question but one that often trips up candidates seeking the highest office. joining me now the man who asked donald trump what he reads. michael's new cover story on the presumptive nominee reveals a startling lack of interest in anything other than himself and his own success. i'm sorry you got caught up in traffic and couldn't join me here in studio. what did trump tell you when you ask him what he reads? >> i asked him literally what he's reading at this point in time, what books he's reading. he said he's reading a book about hillary clinton by ed klein which is a kind of well known hatchet job. and i would bet almost anything

that he's not exactly reading the book, but he is, i'm sure, reading his staff's coverage of the book. and that would be -- and it's a very traditional anti-hillary point of view, the kind of things that right wing radio and television have always hammered about her. and then there was a book about nixon he said he's reading, but he couldn't remember what the book was. and then most interesting, i think, he said but i'm also reading all quiet on the western front, my favorite book. and there i will bet he once wrote a paper in high school about this book and in a moment of having to come up with a book, that's the one he remembers. >> interesting observation there. trump, as you know has been scrutinized for his lack of

experience and any real substantial positions on the issues. you posed brexit to trump here's a snapshot of that conversation. your position? huh? the brits leaving the eu. oh yeah, i think they should leave. what were you thinking when -- i mean, it's obvious. in all fairness, i don't know that brexit itself has become a very big part of the american vernacular, though. >> well, it may not be a big part of the american vernacular, but you could not have had any exposure at any depth to that issue without knowing that term. as a matter of fact, i would say that term has probably been u uttered in the british press more than any other term in the last month.

not to know that term, you've absolutely turned a cold shoulder to the whole discussion. >> so what did you learn, michael, during your time with donald trump? is there a significant difference between the trump we see on television and the personal side? >> let me make two points. i think there is. first thing, i didn't find him angry or combative in the least. i found him actually, on top of being incredibly courtly, even almost charming, i thought this man is having a better time than anyone possibly in the world. he is the happeiest man i've spend time with in a long time. this campaign is about him. it's about him winning. it's about all of the things that i think are most meani inil

to him. by that i quite specifically mean that policy -- the discussion of policy, probably even the implementation of policy is not in any way what he is about. he is -- you know, we have been looking for in the past number of years, everyone's stated the thesis that americans are tired of politicians. well, this is -- we have gotten ourselves someone who is absolutely not a politician, not interested in politics, not interested in policy. he is clearly offering something else. the absolute opposite of that. he is offering -- you know, he is the media candidate. he's offering a kind of performance. he's offering some form of

leadership that has nothing to do with politics. >> do you get a sense that he really wants to be president of the united states? >> well, i think he does want to be president of the united states. let me put this in another way. we have this little discussion and aside in which he pointed out that he was now quite possibly the most famous man in the world. >> i read that. >> and i think that's probably the thing that he wants. and being the president of the united states is a sort of representation of that. so he doesn't really want to be the president as most presidents have wanted to be, a kind of civic class president. he wants to be something else,

to create a revolution with other people and not necessarily the presidency. and so she has to keep focused exactly on that. the skimmishes in the various counties and cities and various issues mean absolutely nothing whether it comes to november of this year. and i'm pleased to see her focused on november. >> but do you worry that someone like donald trump, if she were to lotio lose, would bring that up the general election time and time again? >> it would be impossible to predict anything that donald trump may or may not do. this guy is so beyond any recognition of anything any of us have experienced. he will make it up if it's not available to him. no matter what happens in california, he will interpret it in a way to try to sell it as if we didn't observe it. >> how about this from bernie sanders? we know he's firm in his belief that he can still win.

let's see what he head this morning. here's that. >> if there is a large voter turnout, if working people and young people are prepared to come out to make it clear that it's too late for establishment politics, we're going to win. if the turnout is very, very large -- voters in california. we've got 2 million new voters -- in california and the recent registration polls, believe me, the numbers reflect a whole change in the whole population of this state and how they will react. it doesn't necessarily benefit bernie nor does it necessarily hurt hillary. >> but what do you think is

driving the increased voter registration? it is trump supporters? it is anti-trump believers? >> i think in california it probably anti-trump believers and some bernie sanders supporters. i think a combination of the two are driving up the numbers. >> how much do you think secretary clinton's vice-presidential choice will mean for her nomination and her eventual ability to get elected? >> i have said in my column in the chronicle that it is absolutely decisive. if tomorrow, tonight, or sometimes between now and tuesday she announces that elizabeth warren, senator from massachusetts is her choice, it would be all over. everybody would focus on the idea of the first time electing a ticket that has made up of all women. that would be the story and trump would not be able to answer it. >> that is one story potential, for sure. willie brown, thank you very much for your time, sir.
